Bruce,

Marti Wright was at the school in the 70s, sometime after you and I
graduated. She is putting together a reunion to be held in Guad, Oct 2000.
Should be fun! Her address is marti.horizons@..., for anyone who
would like to find out more and get on Marti's mailing list. I'm not sure
where she's located geographically, somewhere in the States.

I just received word this egroup email service may be cancelled due to
a lack of activity among the members. Que pasa, pues? To remain
active, we need at least two messages per month, which isn't a lot to
ask. Old friends can surely crank out enough email. So let's hear it!

Who is this Marti that's putting the reunion in Guadalajara together?
It's not a name I know. Where is this person located? Here in states,
Guadalajara, or elsewhere?

Gracias por su atencion y ayuda.

Dear Bruce,
I am writing you, as I have noticed lack of activity on the e-groups site. I
was wondering what is going on with all you guys in the U.S. Have you been
in touch with Laurie White?
Mr. Trent has forwarded a mail from 'marti.horizons@...'. It seems
that this person has another group of U.S. alumni, different from yours? Is
this the case? Are you guys coming in October as he is suggesting?
Keep me updated,
Thanks

I received this email from Janet Bode's sister:

"This is Carolyn Bode. My sister Janet Bode taught at the ASG in the
early
70's and attended the reunion in San Antonio last February. She was
one of
the faculty members in a photograph you have on your website.

Janet died December 30th of breast cancer. There will be a memorial in
New
York City Saturday February 26, 2000 at 1 pm at the Village Community
School
on 10th Street between Greenwich St & Washington. I don't know if any
graduates are in the NYC area or would be at the time, but I wanted at
least
to make you aware of events."

Bruce Stirling

P.S. If any of you are in the New York area, it would be nice if you
could appear there for those of us who cannot.

Dear Laurie,
I still like you, even though you send this along for all to read.
Any chance there might be something next year in Guadalajara?
If we could get another great turnout, that would be the best.
Hope all is great with you.

With the advent of this email group, I guess it's anticlimatic to say we now
have our own real Message book online. The old Guestbook will be fading out,
and from now on we'll never lose an old message.

Last month I posted a few more pictures of Laurie, but I don't think anyone
noticed. Somewhere I have more that she sent me, but I've had time problems.

By the way, I liked that joke.

Anyone receive any information about the Guadalajara reunion? Photos? Send
them in and they'll go up online.

Saludos,

Bruce Stirling

I regret that I found this website just a few months too late to be part of the
reunion. I graduated from ASG in 1986. As I looked at the listing of alumni, I
noticed that nobody from the 80's is listed. I wonder where everyone is. I do
have a few contacts that I can make to increase awareness of this terrific
resource. I'm looking forward to hooking up with some old friends, and meeting
new ones who have such a specific experience in common with me. Anyway, just
wanted to say, "Thanks" to those of you who are making efforts to bring us
together. I truly appreciate the potential of this effort.

Hola cuates!

Did you know that when you get your film developed, in addition to getting the
photos and negatives, you can get a photo disk? (About $5.00.) This makes it
incredibly easy to send your photos via email to your family and friends, not to
mention you can SEND YOUR REUNION PHOTOS TO BRUCE! :-) I don't know about y'all,
but I'm ready to see some new photos.

Take care,

http://www.day-communications.com/book.html
The San Patricios: The Irish Soldiers of Mexico THE IRISH SOLDIERS OF MEXICO** by Michael Hogan (Guadalajara, Mexico: Fondo Editorial Universitario, 1997) Reviewed by James Fogarty*

Every since the end of the U.S.-Mexican War (1846-48) U.S. historians have taken pains to dismiss the Irish soldiers of the San Patricio Battalion as a bizarre group of malcontents and ne'er-do-wells who deserted from the U.S. Army, lured by drink, pretty senoritas and/or promises of generous rewards from Mexican officials. Thanks to the scholarly research of Michael Hogan in his new book, italThe Irish Soldiers of Mexicoital, there is a much more balanced and objective analysis of the San Patricio phenomenon. Hogan, a history professor at the American School in Guadalajra, Mexico, puts to rest the above stereotypes and proves conclusively that the San Patricos were, in fact, one of the most disciplined, courageous and effective units in the war. Hogan also debunks the myth that the battalion was made up exclusively of deserters from the U.S. Army and points out that the known deserters represented only about a third of the total membership, while the majority were in fact European or Mexican citizens, and not citizens of the United States. Of the 120 known members, 40 were born in Ireland and 18 others, born in the U.S., Canada, or Great Britain, had Irish surnames. Hogan also shows that the San Patricios felt comfortable using the rituals and symbolism of Catholicism as expressed in Mexico, and were willing to fight to the death for what was obviously the losing side. The San Patricios also had Irishmen in key leadership positions and they carried a banner on which was inscribed Erin go Braugh (sic), along with an image of St. Patrick and the harp of Erin. Religion was a major issue in the conflict which has been ignored or glossed over by many historians. Hogan writes about how the invading U.S. Army deliberately bombarded Catholic cathedrals, churches and convents in Mexico; and U.S. soldiers often brutally interrupted Masses, processions and other religious services. Hogan quotes a Mexican newspaper which condemned the "savage outrages" to which the condemned San Patricios were subjected to by U.S. Army officials: "Mexicans, these are the men that call us barbarians and tell us that they have come to civilize us. These men who have sacked our homes, taken our daughters, camped in our holy burial places, covered themselves in blasphemous uproar with the ornaments of our altars--and have gotten drunk from our sacred chalices." As for the formation of the battalion, Hogan suggests that the decision to join the Mexican side was probably due more to impulse and emotion like many of Ireland's rebellions, including the Easter Uprising of 1916. "Nevertheless," he concludes that the courage of the San Patricios, their sense of loyalty to their new cause and their continuous allegiance to Mexico even after whippings, brandings and imprisonment, forged an indelible seal of honor on their sacrifice." Finally, Hogan reminds us of the affinity that existed, and continues to exist, between the Irish and the Mexicans due to a shared historical experience of struggle to preserve their unique identities, despite repeated and sometimes brutal attempts by their more powerful neighbors to destroy that identity.

I just added two new sections to the ASFG website, the Preparatoria and Comercio
pages. Since I knew so little about either of them, I seek help from Richard
Oppenheim and other Prepa grads. The same is true of the Comercio section, and
I am a little disturbed that I didn't get to know more of about the students in
Comercio! Well, I can't go back in time, but you guys can help out with the
website and make the recuerdos available to all students who ever attended ASFG.

If you want to help, send materials about any reunions, photos, etc.
Muchissimas gracias.

Saludos a todos, and tell everyone to sign up on the eGroups ASFG listserv,
linked to the front page of the website.

Dear Gals and Guys,
I want to thank all of you for the friendship you bestowed on my wife, Luis and
myself. Looking back and looking at the video is a moving experience. As Bruce
mentioned, it is so valuable to get to know people so different and yet so
similar thanks to our upbringing at the ASFG. Carmen, which was not at school,
found it very incredible, and she said "all of you are like a family" and I
truly believe this.
I have had a meeting today with the board of ex-alumnos to give a report on what
happened. I am showing the video, at my office tomorrow evening, with the
Principal, Mr. Trent, invited so he can see firsthand what happened. I am
proposing in having a reunion with you guys next year here in Guadalajara. The
School will do anything it can to help us out. In fact, one of the Mexican
parties can be held at the field. Carmen is very enthusiastic and has
volunteered in helping organize this, if you think it is feasible. Spread the
word and let see the reaction to this offer.
We are as well in the process of editing our first newsletter, and I will make
sure that you get it one way or the other. It might not be great but it will be
a start.
Also, I am proud to announce, that we finally have our OWN website on Campus. It
resides in an Indigo Station, and is just starting, and it is not as nice as
Bruce's but again, we will be working on it. Maybe Bruce could help us out and
give us some ideas. The person in charge is Jorge Aguilar, jpaz@...,
and I have asked him to establish a link with Bruce's site. Here it goes:
http://warrior.asfg.mx/
As for Laurie White's request of a copy of the video, I will glady make copies
of it and if anybody else is interested, I will be happy to send a copy.
Mark Olsson, are you putting up those pictures you took? Let us all know,
Keep in touch,
Moises
p.s. by the way, I will be changing e-mail address to americas@...

Thanks to everyone who attended the first ever American School High School
Reunion! When I left Guadalajara in 1968, I thought I knew a little about
everyone. However, I discovered last week that I actually knew very little
about anyone. I attributed it to the fact that I really hung out with Bill
Steele and Joe Bouton, who haven't been found yet (and that's how well I knew
them!).

This weekend revealed many surprises. Two of you lived in Honduras, where I
once lived, and four of you attended the Escola Americana in Rio de Janeiro,
where I spent four years. Some of you knew people I once knew, and it turns out
Laurie White's roommate at Baylor was Lizzy Fonseca, a former classmate of
Scot's in the 2nd through 5th grades in Rio! John Rhodes once lived in Tucson
after leaving Guadalajara. I went to the University of Arizona for seven years
never knowing he was in town.

The only regret I have about the American School is that the Prepa, Secundaria,
and Commercio were not integrated into the High School. Think how many more
friends we could have easily had! There must be a way to do it. Guadalajara
was the only American School I attended where the students were not integrated
into a single system serving everyone's educational needs. Que lastima. Of all
sad things of tongue or pen, the saddest are these, "it might have been."

Maybe the Internet will now fill in the blanks. Messages left on this eGroup
listserv will go to all! Tell everyone to register on the website.

Saludos,

Bruce Stirling

Laurie White wants all potential reunion attendees to note the following:

NOTICE: If anyone else wants to register, they need to IMMEDIATELY send a MONEY
ORDER for $115 (per
person) made out to Allan J. Castillo. They should send it by EXPRESS MAIL to
Laurie White McClung,
2003 McCormick St., Denton TX 76205. If anyone plans to just show up at the
reunion, they should bring
$200 per person IN CASH and cross their fingers that Holiday Inn and La
Margarita will let us add more
people at the last minute!

Espero ver a todos muy pronto! Remind everyone you know to go the American
School Alumni website and register to join the email listserv.

Saludos,

Bruce Stirling

Well, I planned ahead and lost 40 pounds.... two years ago. But then I
rested on my laurels (or something!) and instead of losing more, as planned,
I gained back some of what I'd lost. It's nice to know I won't be the only
one tipping the boat.

It will be a blast if all four of the ASG Stirlings make it to the reunion!

See ya soon!

OK, I blew it. No more time to lose any weight, and at 225, I must weight at
least
75lbs more than when I went to the American School. Oh well! I think I have
Scot talked
into coming along, as might Robin, the classes of '71 and '68, respectively.
We're still
working on trying to get Mercy up from Guadalajara.

Hope you can all make it to the fun. See you there!

Saludos to all American School Alumni! The deadline approaches for the Reunion.
Somehow I'll get my money in by the 30th. I'm still working on trying to get
Mercy, Robin and Scot (my siblings) to attend.

Enjoy this holiday. Drive carefully, and if you're pulled over by a cop,
remember, you have the right to remain silent.

I'm headed for San Antonio on December 8. I'll submit a tiny report on my
return.

Hola! This is Candi Lesh McKee. I went to the ASG from 1967-1970. I am so
excited about the reunion. I had dinner with Laurie White McClung
two weeks, and we have been keeping the lines "hot". It is so great to know
that there are people are still around that you thought you would never see
again. I think it's pretty awesome! Please feel free to email me at
dcdivers@.... I will respond. I am going to be out of town from 11-19 to
11-22. I promise to email anybody! Have a great day!

Saludos, people! This morning I was the lone member of this group. Now there
are eleven (11) of you, and 56 have outstanding invitations to join. I went
through all existing addresses on the website and sent out invitations.

Please note, your ORIGINAL message goes to all, but the REPLIES only go to the
person who sent the original message. I can make replies go to all, but I had a
revolution going on at another alumni website, so I figure I'd start cautiously.

This list cannot be spammed, either. You can go to the links in the email and
read up on this free service. It should get all talking again.

Saludos, y bienvenidos!
