THE CENTER FOR ARTS EDUCATION (CAE),
MARQUIS STUDIOS, AND PS 37R
TEACHING ARTIST TRAINING INSTITUTE (TATI) 2009
"Often autistic students have to find other ways of communicating, and art seems
to be an
enriching outlet for this special population."
- Ellen Fisher, Teaching Artist
You are a teaching artist or a potential teaching artist with an interest in
working with
students with autism, but feel you lack the necessary experience and/or
training.
Apply to participate in the CAE, Marquis Studios and PS 37 R Teaching Artist
Training
Institute (TATI),
a professional development program!
Through attendance at two Saturday seminars and three observational visits to
the Arts
Academy at PS 37 R from February through April, teaching artists will learn the
best
practices in teaching the arts to students on the autism spectrum. The seminars
will be
led by a team of teaching artists, classroom teachers, education specialists,
and arts
therapists with many years experience in working with a student population on
the autism
spectrum. Topics discussed include the therapeutic value of the arts, offering
pathways of
communication, understanding what autism is, and working with occupational and
physical therapists, among other related subjects.
Twenty participants will be chosen for the program. We are looking for those
with the
genuine interest, respect, and caring needed to work with developmentally
delayed
children. While the Arts Academy is based in visual arts and movement, teaching
artists
from all disciplines are invited to apply. Those accepted into the program will
be
compensated for their time ($150 stipend paid at the end of the program).
Transportation
to and from PS 37 R from Marquis Studios in DUMBO, Brooklyn will be provided.
What is the Arts Academy?
The Arts Academy is a fourteen week visual arts and movement residency that
takes place
at PS 37 R and is funded by the Center for Arts Education (CAE). Marquis
Studios visual
artist Erica Rooney and movement artist Joan Merwyn each work with four
classrooms
seeing students for forty- five minutes once a week.
What is PS 37 R?
A special education (District 75) school based in Staten Island, PS 37 is
attended by a
majority of students on the autism spectrum who "possess neuro-atypical minds
that
cannot learn in a typical academic environment." PS 37 R is a partnership school
with
Marquis Studios; of which teaching artists work in 29 of the 41 classrooms
housed in the
building.
