THE SPIDER'S WEB
(Author Thomas A. Bennett)

A young soldier found himself in a terrible battle during the Scottish Reformation. The enemy was soundly defeating this young man's army. He and his comrades found themselves hastily retreating from the battle field in defeat, running away in fear of their very lives. The enemy gave chase. This young man ran hard and fast, full of fear and desperation, soon found himself cut off from his comrades in arms.

He eventually came upon a rocky ledge containing a cave. Knowing the enemy was close behind, and that he was exhausted from the chase, he chose to hide there. After he crawled in, he fell to his face in the darkness, desperately crying to God to save him and protect him from his enemies. He also made a bargain with God, one which I (and perhaps you too?) have made before. He promised that if God saved him, he would serve Him for the remainder of his days.

When he looked up from his despairing plea for help, he saw a spider beginning to weave its web at the entrance to the cave. As he watched the delicate threads being slowly drawn across the mouth of the cave, the young soldier pondered its irony. He thought, "I asked God for protection and deliverance, and he sent me a spider instead. How can a spider save me?" His heart was hardened, knowing the enemy would soon discover his hiding place and kill him.

Soon he did hear the sound of his enemies, who were now scouring the area looking for those in hiding. One soldier with a gun slowly walked up to the cave's entrance. As the young man crouched in the darkness, hoping to surprise the enemy in a last-minute desperate attempt to save his own life, he felt his heart pounding wildly out of control.

As the enemy cautiously moved forward to enter the cave, he came upon the spider's web, which by now was completely strung across the opening. He backed away and called out to a comrade, "There can't be anyone in here. They would have had to break this spider's web to enter the cave. Let's move on."

Years later, this young man, who made good his promise by becoming a preacher and evangelist, wrote about that ordeal. What he observed has stood by me in times of trouble, especially during those times when everything seemed impossible. He wrote: "Where God is, a spider's web is as a stone wall. Where God is not, a stone wall is as a spider's web."

Is something going on in your life right now that is really bothering you? Perhaps it seems so bad that you are paralyzed by fear. You don't know what to do. Do you ever feel you are in the darkness, facing what seems impossible, wondering (or maybe not) if God even cares?

If you are, I am here to tell you that God does care . . . more than you can imagine right now. And God is most definitely in control. He specializes in the impossible. Cry out to Him. He hears you and desires to give you the very best He has to offer.

Anger management

Learning the art of mindfulness can lead to a happier life

Dharma can help manage anger. Usually we study about human resource management, risk management, time management and financial management, which are all concerned with external elements. But anger management concerns our inner self. When anger arises, we often do not know how to manage it and we become manipulated by it.

Like everything else in the universe, anger arises and passes away, restoring the original pool of stillness. Not knowing its nature and allowing it to take over can lead to disastrous outcomes.

The symptoms of anger can range from fury, frustration and rage to a desire to destroy, and finally, attack what we hold to be the cause.

Anger may manifest itself in the following ways:

- Like a line drawn across water, anger that disappears quickly.

- Like a line drawn in the sand, disappearing when a wave washes ashore.

- Like a line carved into a stone, surviving all kinds of weather conditions over thousands and thousands of years.

Anger is not a physical entity, but once it appears, its destructive potential is far more devastating than any nuclear weapon.

During World War II, the US became furious when the Japanese Army carried out kamikaze attacks on their warplanes and ships at Pearl Harbour. The anger drove the US to attack the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki with atomic bombs, killing more than 400,000 people. Hitler, the famously angry Nazi leader, killed more than six million Jews. King Vidudabha of India was infuriated that the Sakya who were relatives of Buddha insulted him so he unleashed the might of his army on them, wiping out the entire race. This is the power of destruction wrought by anger.

When anger appears in your heart, everything can be turned into a devastating weapon.

In terms of love, it feels marvellous when two lovers' eyes meet because the eyes are the windows to the heart. But two angry people can also burn each other with the fire in their eyes.

Family members living in the same house may start off decorating the house together all in complete agreement with one another, but when overwhelmed by anger they might start throwing the decorative pieces at one another instead.

We must learn the art of mindfulness because anger arises from mindlessness. If you are mindful and always fully aware of yourself, anger cannot conquer your heart - PHRA MAHA VUTHICHAI VACHIRAMETHI

For a husband and a wife sharing the same bed, a bedside lamp can quickly turn into a dangerous baton.

When anger takes over, a home, a family or an office can fall apart. Friends might no longer be friends, belongings can be ruined. Even lives can come to a disastrous end.

When anger arises, do not pursue it, and do not keep it in a jar like preserved fruit. Anger must be conquered before it conquers us.

There are numerous ways to manage anger. First of all, when you are angry, you must walk away from the situation which has caused it.

Next, find yourself some cool, refreshing water. Wash your face with water so that its coolness calms you down. Water can actually help us come to our senses, making us become aware that we are experiencing anger.

Do not make decisions under those circumstances. If you are a businessman, you should not write a cheque, decide on an investment or turn down a customer when you are angry. Otherwise, your business can be ruined in a matter of seconds.

If a married couple gets into a fight, you should not decide to get a divorce right at that moment because when it is all over, you may regret losing the best person in your life.

As parents, if you are angry with your children, you should not tell them to leave the house and never come back. Otherwise, they may not just walk out of the house but out of your life forever.

When angry, you should absolutely refrain from talking because, in anger, talking is like releasing waste, just as a a car releases exhaust fumes. People walking behind the car will inhale the foul, highly toxic air.

We must learn how to transform the power of anger from negative to positive. At the top of all tall buildings are lightning rods which send electricity from the sky to the ground without striking or hurting anyone.

Likewise, we must learn how to neutralise anger. When you are angry, you should not pursue it, but instead try to shift your focus to something else such as doing your chores, bathing, reading, listening to music or jogging.

Having followed the previous steps, your anger should be much less intense, without much energy left. Then you can close your eyes and focus your thoughts on the person who has angered you and follow Buddha's teachings, which say that people in the world may be different - by nationality, religion, skin colour, caste or historical and cultural backgrounds - but we are all in fact brothers and sisters. We are all humans before we are Thai, Bhutanese, Buddhist, Christian or Muslim.

In reality, we are all related because we are all humans. When we view all people as brothers and sisters, we should not be angry with anyone. If we are angry at anyone, it means we are angry with our own family members.

We must all plant the seed of love and compassion in the person who has angered us and in humanity, both in peaceful times and when they have made us angry. It is only when you interact with people in the whole world with benevolence that you will discover the truth: no one really deserves your anger.

Last but not least, we must learn the art of mindfulness because anger arises from mindlessness. If you are mindful and always fully aware of yourself, anger cannot conquer your heart. With mindfulness and self-awareness, we can outsmart any hostile element or attack.

A hostile word, action or situation, can no longer displease you if you are mindful. On the contrary, with the help of mindfulness, when anger arises, wisdom can terminate your feeling of anger. You will be left only with positive energy and liveliness.

Therefore, if we learn to breathe mindfully, anger may arise, but it cannot poison our heart. When you walk in the woods, for instance, it's a good idea to squeeze some lime on your feet. The tens of thousands of leeches may crawl up your feet but cannot hang on or do any harm because they cannot cope with the smell of citrus. The leeches are like anger. They are there but they cannot hurt you. This is because you are always fully aware of your own thoughts, feelings and actions. In today's world, democracy has spread to most countries, including the last Shangri-La of Bhutan.

In democracy, there are many key words, but one which concerns our lives the most is the word "rights". Everyone living in a democratic world usually demands the recognition of their rights.

All people in the democratic world call for human rights without realising there are at least three more rights which are given to them at birth - the right not to be angry, the right not to be miserable and finally the right not to be foolish.

Thus, by learning the art of anger management, you will be able to control yourself even in the worst situations. You will be a physically and mentally healthy person. Your face and skin will even look youthful and radiant like a blooming flower. You will always feel nice and cool inside, like an oasis in a desert.

A person who has successfully managed his or her anger will have one special characteristic: he or she will always have a smiling face. In any temple - in Thailand, Japan, the UK, France, the US or Bhutan - you will find Buddha's face always with a faint smile.

We should all be like little Buddhas always with a smile in our face because we are not disturbed by anger.

But if you do not learn to manage your anger and let it take control, you will possess a strange power to transform yourself into all kinds of monsters, not unlike renowned terrorists who have killed millions of people, a power far exceeding that of any nuclear weapon.

A smart banker puts his or her money in the bank little by little. When necessary, he or she can withdraw the money in an instant. A smart practitioner of mindfulness should do the same. Practise mindfulness little by little, but be consistent. One day, you will realise that mindfulness can do wonders in keeping anger at bay. A heart emboldened by mindfulness will hardly be hurt by anger. A heart without mindfulness always has anger waiting around the corner, ready to attack; just a little twig can start a fire.

Every time you allow yourself to focus on your breathing, it is no different from shining the light of mindfulness into darkness. Light can dispel darkness instantly. So even when anger arises in our heart, when it is met with mindfulness, the emotion will quickly disappear in the same manner.

This is an edited excerpt from a lecture given by Phra Maha Vuthichai Vachiramethi to members of the Bhutanese royal family, the honorable Gembo (former teacher of King Jigme Khesar Namgyel), politicians, business representatives, Unicef staff and guests, at the Royal Guest Hall in Paro, Bhutan, on June 28, 2007.

Subject: Fwd: Myth about SEVA

Wanted to share this truth table I got a couple of weeks back

Myth

Myth Buster

Seva is sacrifice. A seva project has to be a huge commitment of time and money and life.

Seva is an investment. I want to sing/dance/paint/write/ look good/be a movie star/become the prime minister/not be alone/get filthy rich/sell soap - can I do it in a way that uplifts others on this planet?

I have to spend a lot of time away from work and family to do seva.

Better to do seva with people at work/family than to make them miserable.

I want to get enlightened quickly/I am spiritually evolved/I am in art of living/I am a devotee so I have to do seva.

Shut up. “I don't want to go restless or miserable like 'normal' people out there so I want to use my talents and gifts on this planet to good, use”.

I shouldn't bother others with my seva project

I must involve others in my project. What’s MY?

Only those who want to be teachers or involved in the organization should do seva

Teachers and organizers are lucky. They anyway get to do it, others need to do something.

Only way to do seva is to organize and teach courses

That's probably the best way but washing dishes works well if that's all within your capacity

I can't date/get married/take care of kids/have a social life because I have to do seva.

I can't have positive, meaningful relationships with anyone unless I do seva.

Seva projects doesn't need a deadline.

Everything worth doing needs a target date (don’t be attached to it).

Guruji is doing it all anyway, why do I need to do anything?

This is stupidity of the highest order.

Calling and asking others to work on my seva project is not good.

Asking others to help is doing them a favor. It shows willingness to share merit.

If I don't do seva, guruji won't be happy/ignore me.

If I don’t do seva, I won't be happy. His love is unconditional and unrelated.

If I do seva guruji will be pleased/give me more attention.

If I do seva, I will need less of his attention to fix me.

Good intentions and thoughts are enough.

You need good luck.

JAI GURUDEV !

Yesterday evening, Dum Dum airport was ever busy with flights taking off & landing to/from various parts of the country & the world. Passengers were occupied in checking-in, getting security checked, luggage collection, boarding/getting down the flight etc.

Nearby, just next to Dum dum airport, only the Divine's chosen ones were preparing for boarding the heavenly flight to Divinity of  'Anugrahotsav Airlines'. Instead of going into any formalities, they were simply pouring in huge numbers, the premises of Siddheshwari Temple. It was an extra terrestrial flight to be piloted by two Divine souls sent by Guruji to invoke the dormant feelings of devotion in the heart of the masses & imbibe the virtues of Love, Compassion & Belongingness.

Isn't this strange, that there was no No checking-in or No security check? No tickets were required to board this flight except permanent Smile & it was automatic as the passengers left everything & gave priority to this inner journey.

The crew members were none other than dedicated teachers/volunteers, who enjoyed to work together towards smooth & devoted journey for days. To enliven the celebration flavour of Bengal, the atmosphere was reverberating with the beat of Dhaks (Country made drums of Bengal) & volunteers were holding placards announcing the holy beginning of this movement (Bhakti Ki Lahar).

The schedule time i.e 4:30 pm saw the arrival of the first pilot Swami Madhusudan Ji and the aviation fuel was poured in the form of 'Charan Puja'. The seat belts were tightened as the passengers were Blessed by Swamiji just before the flight took off in the form of Padyatra. In the meantime, the second pilot Swami Suryapaad Ji (Chhayapati Ji) took his seat & everybody around were spell bound by mere gesture of his kindness & compassion. The flight was roaring into heights & was taking everybody around into it's stride as Chhayapati Ji was going to each & everybody, who were passing by - whether on foot, taxi, rickshaw or auto. The crowd was startled  as nobody expects this kind of generosity now-a-days in today's strife ridden society full of jealousy & violence.

Swami Madhusudan Ji & Swami Suryapad Ji were Blessing anybody & everybody & the initially hesitant people soon broke their shackles by the glare of their eyes & calm looks on their faces. The fellow passengers were more than involved in singing bhajans one after another. The photograph of Guruji was distributed without any discrimination & due to HIS mystic smile the magic was ON !

The first leg of the flight ended with the Padyatra & the passengers boarded the second leg without getting off or luggage check. The crew members comprised of the musicians also this time & all were set for the meditative inner journey. The seat belts were tightened again with 'Guru Puja' as more passengers joined Auro Hall  & it was jam packed. Each & every Bhajan by Chhayapati Ji was preceded by 'Strotras' & gradually took all the passengers to Divine heights.

Our loving Guruji says......."When Hearts Open, Tears Come Out" and tears were rolling over the cheeks of the passengers. The chanting of Strotras & rendering of Bhajans like 'Namo Sharada' & 'Narayani' forced the passengers to experience the highs of Meditation. The angels deputed by GOD to be in Dum Dum yesterday were fortunate enough to collect the 'Tears of Gratitude & Devotion'. By the time......the flight landed, the divine pilot Chhayapati Ji had forced the passengers to come out of their shells & entire auditorium was in raptures with the rhythmic tapping of footsteps.

The occassion was marked by the presence of Shri. Sanjib Kr Chanda, Chairman & Shri. Hardev Singh, Vice Chairman of Dum Dum Municipalty, who along with the coucillors sought the Blessings of both the Swamijis on behalf of the entire populace of Dum Dum.

Simply, with each day passing by.....His GRACE is engulfing Kolkata on the way to MahaShivaratri celebrations in Feb, 2010. Finally, all the passengers reached the destination with a sense of fulfillment & spiritual enrichment. What more can I say other than........

"Love Really Moves the World"

At last, I'll appeal to all fortunate devotees of Dum Dum to spread this positive vibrations to other parts of Kolkata & West Bengal & not confine the nector of His Blessings to that geography, which you all received in abundance.

In 'Anugrahotsav'........Together We Can & Together We Will ! The World is so Beautiful !!
"Log Kehte Hain Khuda Nazar Nahin Aata;
Hum Kehte Hain Zara Yahan Aakar Toh Dekho.....
Khuda Ke Siwa Kuchh Nazar Nahin Aata"   .... Sri Sri !

MAY OUR BIGGER MIND ALWAYZ WINS OVER OUR CHIRPING & COMPLANINGSMALL MINDS !!!

Keep Smiling Alwayz & this DIVINE Connection ON !!!

Art of Living Divya Samaj ka Nirman (DSN) at Lucknow

We all have personal barriers, old habits, or inhibitions that hold us back and keep us from more fully participating in life. He guided us or pushed us to go deep, do things which I did it and was amazed! Not only amazed, but incredible bliss bubbled up as I felt the freedom of realizing that my limits were of my own doing, imposed on my nervous system from years of programming.” --- Bill Hayden, NASA engineer

We all did so many things which we could never have imagined doing ever, and after going through the rituals of tears to laughter we all felt so free, so full of love. There was so much belongingness in each of us....it was sheer bliss!”

SRI SRI RECEIVES THE ‘2009 CULTURE IN BALANCE AWARD’

Dresden, Germany, 10 October 2009: Spiritual leader and Art of Living Founder,
Sri Sri Ravi Shankar, was today conferred with the 2009 Culture in Balance
Award, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to all facets of culture,
and for his commitment to global cultural balance. In granting the award, the
selection committee attached special importance to Sri Sri’s efforts in
promoting intercultural dialogue, peace and reconciliation in conflict zones,
and ethics in business.

The award, instituted by the Forum Tiberius, was presented to Sri Sri by Dresden
Mayor, Ms. Helma Orosz, amidst a standing ovation. The award ceremony took place
in a special session of the World Culture Forum, at Volkswagen’s landmark
transparent factory in Dresden.

Rich tributes were paid to Sri Sri by a number of prominent individuals,
including Mr. Nirj Deva, British Member of European Parliament, Prof. Gesine
Schwan, candidate for the 2009 German presidential elections and Dean of
Humboldt-Viadrina School of Governance, Berlin, and Prof. Bernd Guggenberger,
Dean of Lessing University, Berlin.

In her address, Prof. Schwan praised Sri Sri for his peace efforts, global
service projects, and valuable counsel on the various social and political
issues facing the world. “It is admirable with what a gentle resoluteness, with
what a calm dynamic, with what full concentration, with what incorruptible
kindness, Sri Sri makes people understand that they can only contribute to peace
by overcoming their own inner fear and prejudices against others,” she said
(translated from German).
Prof. Guggenberger lauded Sri Sri’s humanitarian efforts to promote, preserve
and celebrate diversity across the globe. “Every society has a right to
diversity,” he said. MEP Nirj Deva commended Sri Sri’s initiatives in Europe,
and spoke of the breadth, depth and multidimensional approach of the Art of
Living Foundation. "He is friend to millions - presidents and peasants," he
said. His contribution to bringing people out of distress is greatly
appreciated, he added.

Upon receiving the award, Sri Sri said, “I share this award with all those
people who stand for a violence-free and stress-free society. This award is not
for a person or personality, but for a principle that stands for the ideal of a
‘one world family’ and cultural plurality.”

Later in the evening, the Art of Living Foundation entered into a Memorandum of
Understanding with the Humboldt-Viadrina School of Governance in Berlin. Earlier
in the day, Sri Sri spoke of the need to globalise compassion, wisdom and
humanism in his keynote address at the World Culture Forum, besides answering a
wide range of questions and conducting a meditation. The Forum brought together
500 delegates from across Germany and Europe and from all sectors of society,
including politicians, religious leaders, CEOs, scientists, professors and media
personalities. On Friday, Sri Sri addressed the topic ‘Living Human Values’ to a
sell-out crowd at the Hilton Hotel in Dresden.

Editor’s Notes:
