Hi everyone,
I wanted to share what I've been up to lately. For the last few months I have been creating a Christmas presentation called The Gift. I did the first two presentations this weekend at Mt. Wilson and Hempfield Church of the Brethren this past weekend. It went so well. For the Mt. Wilson presentation, I was joined by the Holy Motion Dance Team from East Fairview COB under the direction of Brisa Saks as well as Sarah Long another very talented dancer and minister. I will be presenting The Gift again (this time solo) at The Foundry Church in Wallingford PA next Sunday at 5:30 p.m. and again on Christmas Eve at New Creation (Reading, PA) at 6:30. If you're in the area for either of those presentations, please stop by.) I am also offering this presentation to other churches, so please feel free to contact me at amokarts@... about it. It's a combination of art, video, a little theater and of course the Word of God. With a few alterations it could be done year round.
For years now we have been hearing about the struggles with finding and providing clean drinking water in Africa. Well I have found a ministry that is doing great things to help. They are called blood:water mission and I have decided I want to do something to help (each one should use whatever gifts he has received to serve others...right?) So I did a new AMOKMAD comic about their ministry called Water for Christmas. Go to http://www.amokarts.com/amokmad.html. As my way of sweetening the pot, if you give $50 or more to blood:water mission, send me the receipt (obscuring any credit card information of course) and I will send you a hand drawn cartoon of your choice.
Also on AMOKArts, I have a new video up just in time for Christmas called CHRIST! that talks about the name Christ and what it shows us about Jesus. The painting in this video is a copy of the one used in the presentation at Mount Wilson. You can see the painting on the front page at http://www.amokarts.com/home.html
While you're on the home page be sure to check out The Art of Akinwolere Muyiwa. Akinwolere is a young artist I met online from Nigeria. He is quite gifted and I thought it might be a great idea to expose his work to the rest of the world. The direct link to the galleryy is http://www.amokarts.com/akinwoleregallery.html
Lastly there are three contests on the main page of http://www.amokarts.com, a cartoon caption contest, a create a cartoon for the caption contest and a contest for how to creatively teach a biblical concept contest. All entrants will receive a collection of ten presentation backgrounds I created and the winning entries in each contest will receive a custom background of their choice from me.
I'd appreciate your prayers as I continue to seek the Lord for ways to use my gift of art to spread the Gospel and edify the church. Please keep me posted on your ministry especially if I can be an encouragement to the artists in your congregation. You can contact me at amokarts@....
God bless,
Dave Weiss

To make sure that you're not missing the tips and info we've posted directly to the Art Lessons From God blog, we've included the most popular, most recent ones here so that you won't miss what your fellow ALFG subscribers are already using to help their growth as artists and designers.
5) Angel Artists Interviews: 13 artists were challenged to create their version of angels. The end result is what we call our Angels Among Us online art show. You showed such a great response to the project that we wanted to give you more insight on some of the artists that created the work: http://artlessonsfromgod.com/category/interviews/
Every time I see his stuff I just have to say wow.
OI wouldn't even know how to begin doing that.

My online friend J. Scott McElroy author of Finding Divine Inspiration, Working with the Holy Spirit in Your Creativity sent me this information on something very cool for artists in the church.
The New Renaissance Rising.
We are just today starting to get the word ut about this movement. The goal is that churches and artists across the world would take this date (Nov 21st) to start or intensify the faith/art groups, initiatives, dialogues, projects, relationships, ideas, etc. in their circle of influence. It is a unique opportunity for a move of God! You can help by alerting everyone you think would be interested and sending them to the site. (http://www.facebook.com/l/3e9ce;thenewr.org) When they send us an email we will send back a link to a resource site full of helpful info, articles, links and etc.
I'm not sure what I'll be doing with this at New Creation yet, but how about if we start sharing ideas. Scott is a guy who really has his act together on the movement for empowering artists in the church. I really encourage everyone to check this out and get involved.
Please view this video at this web address it will truly inspire the artist who
is a Christian. Tony already wrote a comment about it at the site:

God's in Christ, Victoria on Okinawa<><vjc><>
Hi everyone,
For almost as long as I have been in ministry I have had this leading to help people find their gifts and talents and helping them to use them to serve the Lord in the church and in the world. I've done a sermon series here, a worshop or seminar there, but I have never really had the opportunity to put it all together into something coherent...until now. I am beginning to compile all this information into a book as well as a series of messages that I am hoping to present to churches and conferences everywhere to really help and encourage every Christian I can to find their own niche in the body of Christ.
Here's where I need your help. The last chapter of the book and hopefully illustrations through out the book and the series will be a gallery of unusual ministries, i.e. people and teams using unique gifts and talents to serve the Lord in the church and in the world. I need your help to find those ministries. Please tell me about any ministries you can think of and if possible contact information on the people in charge so I can interview them for the chapter.
Any help I can get here would be huge!
Thanks and God bless,
Dave Weiss

After nearly 10 months in production, the "Angels Among Us" online art show, resource and book are complete. The project is actually a relaunch of the version we first kicked off back in 2003.
This year I wanted to go bigger and better:
1. The Q & A website: The main site displays 9 key questions about the history, purpose and/r reality of angels, all with biblical references to
2. The Interactive Gallery displays the art of 13 visual artists (including myself). These artists were challenged to create their rendition of angelic beings. The goal of the gallery being online only is our attempt to bring the art to the people where they are rather than hoping that they walk into a brick-and-mortar gallery, which most of the general public never do.
3. The companion book: A 36-page published book (available on Amazon) that not only contains the questions asked about angels from the website, but it also contains the "behind the scenes" sketches, doodles and commentary from angel art that I have created over the years.
Who is involved? We are thankful to the following artists that took part, some making an encore appearance from the original 2003 version of the project and some joining us for the first time:
Glen McCall
Eric Merced
Hu-Ann Mulia (encore)
Aldo Muzzarelli
Martin Oakley
Michael Perng
Amado Rodriguez, Jr. (encore)
Bud Rogers (encore)
Devin Smith
Steven K. Smith
Tony Snipes (encore)
Joe Spicer (encore)
Dave Weiss (encore)
What took it so long to finally launch?
Although completion of the project was expected nearly 10 months ago, I still think it finished "on time" in order for it to fulfill the vision that was in mind.
The delays reminded me of what you hear when a movie production schedule gets pushed back further and further. Staffing issues, changes in production resources, changes in "casting" and rounding up the talent on deadline, coordinating marketing timeline…you name it, we had it! But I do feel that it was worth the wait.
So go in and take a look! Check out the Q & A. Play the promo video. View the coolest versions of angels that you've ever seen, then post a comment and let us know what you thought:

I just posted my video on a great project from which I have just returned. I went to the New Orleans area as part of a disaster relief/pastors' retreat project. We worked during the day and studied the topic of our call in the evenings. The project was a joint effort between Brethren Disaster Ministries and The St. Bernard Project. It was an immensely fulfilling time. The folks at the St. Bernard Project and BDM really helped us to learn the skills needed to do the work, meeting the family we were helping was an amazing experience and the training in the evening allowed me to meet some amazing pastors and build what I am hoping will be lifelong friendships not to mention taking a long hard look at my call, areas where I am growing and areas where I am falling short. I sincerely hope the denomination offers many more of these experiences.
To all the folks who have never done something like this or those who are looking for a great opportunity to learn and serve, I highly, highly, highly recommend working with Brethren Disaster Ministries and the St Bernard Project.
I have sent this to you because I think you might support the arts. Please consider participating.

----- Forwarded Message ---- From: appropriation art <contact@...> To: Press Release <contact@...> Sent: Thursday, August 27, 2009 12:08:52 PM Subject: URGENT! Appropriation Art
Only 17 Days left to have your say!
'The state's legitimacy is based on the idea of citizenry. The state therefore has no right to question the loyalty of its citizen. It is the
citizen's obligation to be as disagreeable and disturbing to the state as possible. In other words, the citizen, through his engagement in the public place, expresses his expectations of the loyalty of the state. After all, it is our state.... The characteristics of the loyal citizen include orneriness, outspokenness and disloyalty to conformity."
John Ralston Saul
Hello !
Back in June 2006 you signed the original Appropriation Art letter of concern on copyright reform. Thank you! Bill C-61, the copyright bill died on the floor. But now, once again, Copyright is front and centre. The Government of Canada is now consulting you on your copyright views. Once again Appropriation Art is asking you to speak out.
FREEDOM OF EXPRESSION IN CANADA
We know it is not until essential freedoms have been eroded that they become precious. Freedom of Expression is a fundamental right and an essential requirement for all artistic creation. If Bill C-61 had passed, works would have been censored not for their content but for their form and their creative process. The ’legitimacy‘ of cultural works would have been determined not by artists, curators, educators, writers, critics, publications, museums, galleries and the public but by corporate interests and largely foreign corporate interests. Should similar
legislation be written and passed, the practice of Appropriation will be eradicated. Canada would become the first country to make illegal a historic, legitimate and internationally recognized art form. This is unacceptable.
Copyright Legislation is a vital issue for the future of creativity in Canada.
COPYRIGHT
CONSULTATIONS
The highest level of discussion in this consultation process is known as a 'Round Table'. A round table allows participants about 5 minutes (some are allowed more) to make a point. Ministers attend (not always) these round tables. Those invited to a round table are obviously those who are considered to have a stake in future
changes to copyright legislation. So you will find a good number of Industry Representatives along with other invited Groups and Individuals. So...how are artists represented at these round tables to date? They are represented by unions, collectives and industry lobbyists. Artist are presented as a homogeneous group who simply want more restrictive copyright. This is simply not true. It is unacceptable that the Government considers it neither necessary nor important to hear what artists have to say in this debate.... while at the same time stating that they are listening to artists. Into this yawning gap we ask that you throw your extremely valuable opinions.
WHAT CAN I DO?
So...here's the hard part....Appropriation Art is asking you to SPEAK OUT. Speak your mind. This debate will chart the future course for Freedom of Expression in Canada. Don't let this pass you by. Write a letter and/or email to your MP and the Ministers of Heritage and Industry and the Prime Minister. OR....and here's the easy part ....LINK to send this automatic letter! You can remove or add sections to make this letter reflect your own personal views. It's simple and will take you less than two minutes. Please. Make
these two minutes count.
APPEAL
If all of you CLICK we will have 600 signatures from Artists and those working in the Cultural Sector. Ask a few of your friends to CLICK...and we could double or treble that number. If this appeal goes out to Group Members the letter could number in the thousands. Let's make this letter count.
We are asking you to fight for your Freedom of Expression. If you don't, who will?
Please forward this to everyone you know. The more letters the better.
Thank you for all your help and good luck!

I was rereading an email from a new friend online, and I thought it spoke to something a lot of us artists face. She was speaking of having a lot of ideas and not always being able to get them completed. I wrestle with that too. It even appears we have a similar vision to start a ministry where people from the community can come in and create art, performances, etc to the glory of God and meet Jesus while doing what they love to do and working together to create art, performances concerts and more.
Here's what I wrote her. I think it will bless you my readers too. I have a similar vision. I am simply trying to get something going where people can come in and create together and get to know Jesus. I am thinking things like doing plays and exhibitions and such things. The open studio concept that I am working on developing today was the original concept for A.M.O.K. about ten years ago. I couldn't do it then, every group of people I got together didn't last, etc. Eventually I decided that I would write the ideas I have down and post them to the web and do the things I could do myself, which led to workshops and things where I went out and encouraged other artists to use their gifts to serve the Lord. So in effect the original vision is ten years old and has not yet come to pass but in faithfully doing what I can do, I have been blessed to bless others. I just posted a new video about something the Lord showed me recently. I've known this concept for a long time but one day in prayer, I really feel like God showed it to me on a whole new level. Check it out and I pray it blesses you. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5-57YFUw10
There's one school of thought that believes that artists are born with their talent. That they enter this world with a unique ability to express the seen and even the unseen through visual art. They believe that God Himself has wired this select population with an innate ability to represent the natural world, communicate ideas, or even evoke emotion through their masterful use of line, shape color and composition.
There is another camp that believes that artistic talent is something that can be taught and not something you're born with. They believe that if an individual has the desire and dedication to "learn what it takes" to be an artist, that they can become that. Some even say that we are all born with the creativity that artists eventually all share, and that God-given talent to a unique few is not the case. They we grow apart from are artistic talent, and anyone can regain that talent if they study, train, etc.
My personal memory concerning this goes way back to when I was in kindergarten (yes, I can remember back that far!). My kindergarten teacher, Ms. Hunt, asked our entire class to draw a portrait of her as she stood at the front of the class. I'm not sure what the others drew, but I clearly remember Ms. Hunt looking at my work after that exercise. I also clearly remember her always setting me apart during every drawing assignment from that day forward in class.
