Has anyone else picked up DRACULA VS KING ARTHUR? It seems to be
the most Arthurian of anything so far this year. Morrison's work is
(as usual) odd, and the point of BEYOND AVALON seems to be that
Arthur (who was in No. 1, along with Joseph of Arimathia) has gone
missing.

Jason,

I think Beyond Avalon has potential, but the second issue was not very
interesting.

I read the first issue this week. The "most
Arthurian?" I guess so. Not the most interesting,
though, IMHO. I'd rate it as not quite as bad I'd
feared, but not as good as I'd been led to hope from
some of the online reviews.

I'll agree with you about *Beyond Avalon* -- the first
issue was interesting, but with the second we're
launched into what seems to be pretty generic heroic
fantasy -- not badly executed, but nothing special,
either.

As for Grant Morrision -- I suppose he's an acquired
taste, but I acquired it a couple of decades ago and
am willing to follow him quite a long way. You've got
to give him points for audacity if nothing else --
e.g., this speech from *SS: Shining Knight* #3:

"Would you believe me if I told you this weapon was
carved by artisans of the first Arthurian epoch,
10,000 years ago, somewhere in the 81st century
BC?...There were of course several Arthurs; a pagan
gneral in Roman Britain, a medieval Christian
mystic..."

What the -- ?

But my favorite bit so far is probably the appearance
of Gawain in issue #1, where Morrison manages to make
reference to Gwalchmai ("Hawk of May"), the Silent
Knight, and the latter character's connection to
Hawkman with one elegant (if continuity-bending)
panel.

The Holy Grail is mentioned again in this month's
solicitations for *Arm of Kannon* #7.

Rodney (or anyone else who's reading this series),
what is the function of the Grail in this story? And
is it a cup/chalice or does it take some other form?
Any other Arthurian references?

Thanks,

In ARM OF KANNON, the Grail suddenly appears in the story as the means of
controlling &/or containing the Arm of Kannon. We are not told where it comes
from or how it was found. All of a sudden, it is revealed that one of the
characters has it! I was not impressed with its introduction into the
storyline!

Dan, I don't think anyone else on the list has mentioned it -- speaking just for
myself, I
had decided to pass on this series, and was unaware of the Arthurian element in
the
storyline until you mentioned it. Guess I will be picking up some back issues!

Gentlemen,

It is not clearly stated that Merlin is part of the story until the 4th
issue, though is an Arthurian, pendragon reference before that. The story, so
far is more creative than some we have seen..
By the way, I was disappointed in Morgan le Fay in BLOOD OF THE DEMON. Same
old villain with no new development of her character.

Good Hunting!

Greetings

I am thinking of producing a medieaval theme comic. My question is
would black and white work or is it to dark for a comic. I ask because
my colouring is not the bestest but my B+W work is preety good - even
though I say so myself! I may do the comic as B+W with a small amount
of block colour maybe.

Let me know your opinions.

I will post artwork when I have some finished product done (I only
have very prelim sketches done at the moment).

Reynold,

Many excellent Arthurian comics have been done in black and white. I
am thinking especially of the "Legends of Camelot" series, though
"Newts of the Round Table" was also black and white.

For many comic creators, printing in color is too damn expensive,
even if they have the coloring skills. A black and white interior,
with a color cover, is quite common among independent titles.

So, in other words, go for it! I'd love to see sample art when you
get it.

Arthurian material in my latest batch of comics:

Uncanny X-Men No. 462 (9/05)--House of M tie-in. The House of M wave affects
Otherworld here. Roma sends Captain Britain and Meggan back to Earth 616 to put
things back the way they were or she must destroy that Earth.

Nightcrawler No. 7 (8/05)--In a dream vision, Nightcrawler claims the Sword in
the Stone and explains that Xavier had the All-New X-men (from Giant Size X-Men)
read T. H. White's The Once and Future King (I think this is a retcon to match
up with the X2 film).

Fables No. 39 (9/05)--For those keeping track, this issue features another
appearance of the sword in the stone in Fabletown's business office.

More Arthurian references in the following Marvels:

Excalibur No. 14 (7/05)--Magneto reads from The Once and Future King in this
House of M prelude.

Excalibur No. 12 (6/05)--the letters page finally explains the Arthurian
connection for this incarnation of the series: "The name 'Excalibur' refers to
Charley's leadership (his formation of a 'round table,' if you will) and his
team's dedication to the belief that 'might does not make right' (as
opportunists like Stripmine and Dark Beast like to think it does)."

Hello everyone! Thank you for accepting me into your group.

Name (your real name please): Tara

Academic affiliation (if any): None currently--I received a BA in
English from McDaniel (formerly Western Maryland) College in 2003. I
wrote and presented a 30 page thesis on the infertility of Queen
Guinevere in The Mists of Avalon vs. Guenevere: Queen of the Summer
Country. I am into any and all retellings of Arthurian legend.

Primary interest in Comic Books or Popular Culture: Neil Gaiman, 1602,
anything by Peter David, ST:TNG, LOTR

Primary interests in the Arthurian legend: different representations
of Guinevere and the justifications of her actions. Judgment of
Guinevere is an interesting indicator of how various societies feel
about women at that point in time.

Publications about Comic Books (including web sites): I'm somewhat new
to the comic book world.

Publications about the Arthurian legend: My interest in this was
stirred by reading Camelot 3000. When I found it in a comic book
store, I couldn't believe anyone had ever written anything like it.
Then I thought the future concept was cheesy, but I ended up really
enjoying it. Other than that, I've read most of the traditional stuff
and am working through the modern retellings. I'm writing my own, as
well.

Hi Everyone

I am an amateur artist and am thinking of trying to get a graphic
novel together. My idea is to take some existing, but little known
mediaeval stories and weave them into a graphic novel.

My question is two fold.

First off I was wondering what sort of style to use. Do i go for the
mediaeval falt style with little to no perspective, or do I try a
more Frank Miller style of black and white with the odd bit of
colour, or indeed (my preferred option) to go for sepia inks and
colourwash.

Secondly, I would like some pionters on story boarding. Some of the
texts I am using are prose, some poems. I want to transfer this into
a framed story for use in a graphic novel, rather than just
illustrating the story. What, if any, are the general rules regarding
storyboarding. I do not want to loose the story line, but neither do
I think it appropriate to include the full prose.

Your thoughts would be most welcome.

Regards

Reynold

Reynold,

Welcome aboard. Your new project sounds very interesting, not least because it
will give all us academics something to talk about in a future conference paper!

When it comes to storyboarding, I cannot recommend highly enough "Panel
Discussions" by Damon S. Talon, published by TwoMorrows. Talon does interviews
with a couple dozen pros, highlighting what each one does best. Well
illustrated, as you would expect for a book of this sort. I got mine from the
local comic shop, but you might try Amazon.

As for art, I am a writer above all, and what experience I have had with artists
is always to encourage them to do that which they are most excited about doing.
If you really want to use sepia tones, then go for it. Don't feel like you have
to make the art "authentic" medieval; an "outside" approach done skillfully is
better than a "strict adaptation" done poorly.

And let us see what you do!

Cheers,
Jason Tondro

Reynold,

I think any style that suits the story and your abilities would work -- that
being said, some styles like the faux-medieval bad perspective style, or, as a
writer once pitched to me , a story told entirely with visuals based on the
Bayeux tapestry (I turned it down because it would have been boring to draw) --
such gimmicks would wear thin too fast to work for an entire graphic novel.
Those styles could work very effectively in short bursts of exposition or
flashback scenes.

Any adaptation of existing stories (public domain, I assume?) would entail some
editing, if nothing else, then to avoid repeating in drawings what's mentioned
in text and vice-versa, just to avoid redundancy. Have you read any of Will
Eisner's books on the comics form, or Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics?
Personally I don't agree with all of McCloud's assertions, but it gets you
thinking about the nuts and bolts of the medium.

As for "storyboarding", while many comics artists moon-light as storyboard
artists, the approaches are quite different, since storyboards are a means to an
end, while comics are an end in and of themselves.

Dave Sim (Cerebus) has proved, but perhaps pushed the rules too far, that comics
can accommodate pages of text. He used this successfully in the Cerebus volume
"Jaka's Story" and less successfully elsewhere. If you investigate Sim's work,
don't let his more recent controversies put you off his better work.

Hope this helps.

Best of luck,

Michael

Greetings one and all

Thank you for the responses so far.

In light of the a couple of comments I would like to add a couple of
things.

Firstly an apology, I am a rank beginner and hobbyist artist so my use
of terminnology may be awry, such as 'storyboarding'. My question in
relation to that was meant to find a means of being able to break the
story down into frames for the final output.

This leads on to the second point. The stories are indedd in the
public domain, most of them have been around for five hundred years,
at least! I am drawing from copies of original manuscripts and various
translations, but in essence the stories have been told and retold for
many generations. Some of the stories will be lesser known ones, I see
little reason in re-hashing stories that are so well known these days.
I think the well known ones stand the risk fo becoming passé by being
retold and redrawn time after time. By re-enlivening some of the
lesser known stories I hope to bring an awareness of the rich vein of
storytelling available and this will also beneift the better known
stories.

I know, I sound pretentious, but it is all low key. If I ever get it
done it will be the realisation of a pipe dream for me, as I say I am
an amateur in this, I am a structural draughtsman by trade with a
great love of my Celtic/British heritage.

Take care and good luck

Reynold
