Hi. As a reply to my recent inquiry on the Comics Scholar's D-List (about
Corto Maltese and Oaky Doaks), I received the following reply. Has anyone
read 'From Hell'?

Speaking of 'Corto Maltese', can anyone provide me with the original
publication information on the story reprinted in NBM's Vol. 4, 'A
Mid-winter Morning's Dream'. So far I've found Italian, French and
Spanish versions of a band desinee (sp?) called 'Le Celtiche' (in
Ital.), but I cannot figure out its original publication or language.

Also, is Pratt the writer or artist? (Plus who translated the
English translation?)

Thanks in advance for your help,
Michael

PS. Does anyone know anything about a 1930s strip called 'Oaky
Doaks' by Ralph Fuller?

Sorry to be bothering you al again, but can anyone tell me if the
original edition of Mage: The Hero Defined had page numbers. Neither
the Starblaze nor Image reprints do.

Thanks,

Michael,

I've read "From Hell," though I do not have it readily at hand. No
*specific* Arthurian element stands out, but I do not doubt that there
is a reference or two in there somewhere. Moore's Ripper, Dr. Gull,
takes a mystical tour of London in which he invokes just about every
occult conspiracy motif you could imagine. Arthur's return, or related
myths, are no doubt in Moore's footnotes, which are copious and
fascinating reading.

Gull's whole motivation for performing the murders is to tip the balance
in the eternal war of the masculine against the feminine. The murders
are, in fact, an occult ritual that (more or less) succeeds. "Arthur's
Return" becomes a symbol of this triumph of the masculine over the
feminine.

Alas, I cannot help you on Mage. Again, read it, but don't have the
original issues handy.

I have read From Hell, in installments as it came out (beginning over a
decade ago). I don't recall any Arthurian references, but that doesn't
mean there are not some in there. Moore tries to make the comic as
encyclopedic as possible, pulling in everything he can think of. There
may therefore be some reference to Arthur. If so, I'd suggest looking in
Gull's speeches for it. My own copies of the various issues are strewn
here and there; it could take me a while to find all of them and check
carefully.

Here's another comic with an Arthurian reference (perhaps evidence of an
intertextual link with Humberto Ramos' Crimson):

Hernandez, David, wr. and art. "Book One; 'The Beginning'." The Gothic Scrolls
of Drayven No. 1 (Boca Raton, FL: Davdez Arts, Inc., Dec. 1997).

Section entitled "A Guide to the Gothic Scrolls" notes the following:

SEARC: Modern day socialite, Searec runs the "Red Grail" nightclub in
downtown Chicago. Drayven [series protagonist and first vampire] first
became friends with Searec in the Dark Ages. Drayven and Searec form the
Knights Templar hoping that if they were to drink from the Holy
Grail, they would be cured of their dark curse. [. . .]

Three brief messages:

1. I've just finished looking through 'Previews' for September, and
I'm happy to report that it looks like a great month for Arthurian
comics. I will post details soon.

2. I'm revising the list web page
<http://home.att.net/~torregrossa/comichome.htm>. Any suggested
links?

3. For fans of older Arthurian comics, you might check out these two
lists also on Yahoo!:

yguid=40925410>

Seven Soldiers of Victory
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SevenSoldiersofVictory/?yguid=40925410>

I've also found a 'Lady Pendragon' site, but I've yet to be accepted
into the group.

More later,
Michael

PS. The list is changing its name to "The Arthurian Comics
Discussion List". No major changes here other than on the web
pages.

I just picked up Captain Marvel Vol. 3, Nos. 20-21, and I do have to ask, how
can this Merlin be Maha Yogi. Isn't Merlin-Maha Yogi a psionic and not a
magician? (Seems like David's either confused his Merlins or purposely craeted
anoth one [what's the total now--10 Merlins in the Marvel universe?])

Thanks,
Michael

Thanks for passing on the tip, Dan! For any other list members who
haven't picked these up yet, the Merlin in question is the Maha Yogi
version. But he is definitely identifying himself as "THE Merlin" in
   these issues.

Completists may wish to note that the Marvel Chronology Project
(http://www.chronologyproject.com/) lists the character as having
appeared in Captain Marvel #11, 13, and 16 as well. I'm guessing
that these are brief appearances that set up the two-issue storyline
in #20-21. Actual Arthurian content is, alas, unknown.

For fans of Jack Kirby's The Demon:

Cartoon Network has finally premiered "Knight of Shadow" Part one of this
two-part episode reairs Saturday (9/21) at 9:30 PM (Widescreen) and Sunday, Sept
22 at 7 PM. Part 2 premiers next Friday, Sept 27 at 7 PM and reairs on
Saturday, Sept 28 at 9 PM (in Widescreen) and Sunday, Sept. 29 at 7PM.

The first episode retells Etrigan's origin. He is now Morgaine le Fay's lover
and betrays Camelot to her. Morgaine then betrays him, and Merlin appears to
curse Jason to live as the "demon within" (or something). Flashforward to the
present--Morgaine (now in traditional Kirby's gold faceplate) and her son
Mordred (still as youthful as in the opening) are seeking the Philosopher's
Stone that once rested in the hilt of Excalibur. Blood/Etrigan joins forces
with the Justice League to prevent Morgaine from acquiring the stone. To be
continued next week.

Here is my much belated listing of Arthurian themed comics from Previews 12.9
(Sept. 2002)

Image:
Lady Pendragon Special Wr. Matt Hawkins and John Stinsman. Art. various. 64
pp. $7.95.

Relaunches the title, which will begin a new series in 2003. Features the
return of Morgan le Fay and Mordred.

AC Comics:
Femzine #2. Mature Readers. 44pp. B&W. $9.95.

Morgan le Fay transforms former stripper Fanny Phantom into a "costumed
crimefighter" to battle Yankee Girl. (Anyone, is this a reprint?)

Carbon-Based Comics:
Lost Tales of Erin by Bill Knapp. B&W. 24 pp. $2.95.

Sounds like it adapts tales from Irish mythology.

Chaos Comics:
o/a Lady Death: Re-Imagined #1 by Bradley J. Kayl and Eddy Burrows. FC. 32 pp.
$2.99.

Sounds like a "Elseworlds" version of the series. The "Re-imagined" Lady
Death is involved in a quest for the Grail in 1300 AD.

Fantagraphics:
Prince Valiant Vol. 46: The Sunken Treasure by Hal Foster and John Cullen
Murphy. 48 pp. $16.95

     No info.

Rolling Thunder Press;
Dave Dorman's Wasted Lands #0. FC. 24 pp. $2.95.

Set in the same world as Dorman's The Rail, this is a preview book for
ongoing series to be launched in 2003.

The Comic.Com
Beowulf TP. 120 pp. FC (sort of). $15.95.

Reoffered. Collects 3 issue mini-series. Sounds like this edition includes
additional material as a prologue.

Dear list members,

This appears to be a great year for academic research in Arthurian popular
culture studies. In March at the Toronto Sheraton, the Arthurian Legends Area
of the Popular Culture Association offered a full day of papers on such diverse
topics as comics, fiction, film, and television. Two months later, there were
some great papers on Arthurian film and television (including one on Witchblade)
at the International Medieval Conference at Kalamazoo. This summer (despite
some members of the Society's reluctance to accept modern Arthuriana) there were
a number of papers on Arthurian film, fiction, and illustration at the
International Arthurian Society's triennial congress.

In terms of print resources, we have already seen the publication of Elizabeth
Sklar and Donald Hoffman's King Arthur in Popular Culture (McFarland), which
includes a number of informative essays including those by list members Dan
Nastali (on music) and Jason Tondro (on comics); Alan Lupack's New Directions in
Arthurian Studies (D. S. Brewer), a collection based on papers presented at the
Camelot 2000 conference held in 2000 at the University of Rochester (home of The
Camelot Project online resource
<http://www.lib.rochester.edu/camelot/cphome.stm>); Arthur Groos and Norris J.
Lacy's Perceval: A Casebook (Routledge) with essays on film and fiction; and
Kevin J. Harty's Cinema Arthuriana: Twenty Essays, Revised Edition (McFarland),
the essential reference for Arthurian film studies. Later this year, D. S.
Brewer will publish a collection on the Arthurian legend in music.

On a more personal note, I have recently completed an essay on the return of
King Arthur in the comics for a new book on Arthurian juvenilia for Palgrave
Macmillan edited by Barbara Tepa Lupack (co-editor of King Arthur in America).
The essay is a revision of a paper I presented at Camelot 2000. This version
covers Arthur's return through reenactment (including a nice section on the
X-men) and substitution, and with the editor's permission it will be uploaded to
the comics list "files". Also, I have recently received word that my paper on
Merlin in the comics has been accepted for inclusion on a panel at the
International Medieval Conference next May at Kalamazoo. The panel is on
Arthurian illustration and sponsored by the North American Branch of the
International Arthurian Society.

Lastly, does any one else have any good news about publications? I'm starting
work on a listing of scholarship on twentieth-century (and twenty-first-century)
Arthuriana for the popular culture list home page
<http://home.att.net/~mtorregrossa/arthpchome.htm>, and I'd like to be as
comprehensive as possible. You can also send information on other periods as
well. Arthurian studies are a continuing tradition, and this list will not
discriminate between periods.

Michael
