The June 2009 challenge was "The Sun". Althogether there were eight entries in this challenge. Each was a completely different interpretation of the main theme. All were very well executed and creative. Our First Place prize goes to Shirley Jones, for her three dimensional piece "SUNflower ". Shirley said, "I wanted to make a standing glass sunflower in one firing. It took a little planning, but I did it! Although I have done this technique before I had never done it using fiberboard as the "drop ring".

I carved out fiberboard to make a base for my sunflower, making sure it had a hole all of the way through the board for the glass to drop through. I filled it with layers of glass, added the sunflower petals, and topped it with plenty of scraps of glass. I placed my glass leaves on the prepared kiln shelf, supported the fiberboard with kiln furniture over the leaves. Closed the lid to the kiln, and "set it and forget it."

Voilą, this is what I found the next morning!"
