This website has some interesting thoughts on Leonardo the mystic
(for an insight on what inspired Dan Brown's Da Vinci Code). And if
you happen to be in San Jose this summer you can tour the exhibit at
the Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum.

I just wanted to share a few of my favorite ways I keep creative
through out the year and during the summer...

I am a member of EBSQ an online artist organization. They have
monthly shows with different themes. I force myself to particapate in
as many of them as possible, as it makes me thing outside of my
creative box.
http://www.ebsqart.com/

A new group called "Try it Tuesdays" is a technique sharing group
with fun demos and contests. A new technique is shared each week
(usually something easy and quick) you are required to try it out,
post your results and share in the discussion to enter the contest.
But you can still get good ideas for your classroom even if you don't
do the contests!
http://tryittuesdays.wordpress.com/previous-techniques/

Lisa Vollrath shares TONS Of incredible demos with step by step
pictures for a variety of art mediums. I have already used ideas from
her site in my classroom.
http://www.lisavollrath.com/pages/category/how-to/

This digital photography group requires that you particiate weekly in
order to maintain membership. Pictures are offered each week by the
moderators for you to create digital weaves and collages...
http://www.pbase.com/creativematrix

Getting to know you and yourself... with self-portraits the
http://selfportraitchallenge.net/

Photowalk scavenger hunts? they used to run regular bi-monthly
contests... but it seems they are stuggling for a moderator right
now, but keep an eye out! or us an old list. and all the pics here
are copyright free for your digital art.

and something brand-new to me! Swaps Made Simple
The easiest way to create and join swaps on the internet... make a
swap or join one!
http://www.swap-bot.com/

now don't think that I do all of these all of the time and I am some
sort of art cranking robot! I pick and choose based on my mood and
time. But I encourage you to check some of these out and come play!

Subject: Re: New to the ART CART! Help?!?

Me too! I was on the cart for 8 years then finally got my room 10 years ago. I lost my room for next year (although my school is building an addition and my principal swore that I would have it back the year after next....I hope!). I ordered the cart that was recommended earlier. It looks very good. When I was on the cart 10 years ago it was old and terrible so I was determined to be strict about getting a good cart...definitely makes the job easier.
Dealing with late teachers is a tough one. I don't sweat it though. Because that means I will be late for my next class and I make a point of letting the next teacher know why I'm late (my classes are back to back). They usually make a point to say something to the previous class teacher.
Also, in our first faculty meeting, I give a little speech to the teachers about being on the cart and what they should expect. I talk about the late factor and also when I enter the room it is now my class.( It used to irritate me when if the teacher stayed in the room they would  talk to their kids (ask them to do stuff, etc) during my class time. I also emphasize to please leave room for the cart when they set up the room, keep in mind that I might be using the board so leave room there for me to write on. I also ask them to set up a small space where I can store the kids portfolios. I just take a few with me (for shows, contests, etc.).
When our AP was setting up the schedule for next year I made a point to let her know that not to schedule it where I have two classes that are back to back on either ends of the building. I also asked her if it was all possible not to schedule three classes back to back  which this year in my room 4 days a week I had 3 classes scheduled from 12:00 to 3:00 (one hour blocks). She did manage to change that and now this year I only have one day where I have three hour blocks. Its now 2 in the morning and 2 in the afternoon....very happy about that one.
My fourth grade classes (4 of them) are also in the portables. It is a pain with the cart. But if it is raining (which it does a lot in the afternoons down here in Miami) and I'm not there yet, I don't take the cart...even if it means I have to change the lesson for that day (I have back up lessons for this type of thing....like substitute plans)
I use the LCD a lot so this will be a challenge going from class to class and having to set up each time. My kids do a lot of computer art too when I was in my own room (I had 6 computers), this will probably change because the programs I used are not in all the rooms. I won't do as much ceramics....maybe just one this year. It is just too hard.
I have an office off my art room which I share with the music teacher (she got kicked out of her room last year). The teacher that is using the art room (5th grade class) doesn't need the office and we do. He is setting his desk, etc. up in the classroom (our request). All the supplies are still being kept in the supply room which is also off the art room. I have a key so it will be locked at all times now that I'm not there to monitor when teachers come in to ask for supplies.
It definitely is a challenge being on the cart but it can work with a lot of organization! Hopefully you will get your room back next year. Good luck!

Hello All,
I was wondering if any of you teach painting by using a ruling pen? I
learned this technique in college and I would like to use with my other
students next year but ruling pens are so pricey and was wondering if
you all did anything with them and if so where were you able to buy in
bulk?

Thanks Gina in Nj

Dear Judy,
Hi, yes, I am interested in seeing the mini list of
your books.
I am teaching at an inner city school and looking for
books about gang symbolism in art, street gangs, etc.
I am always on the lookout for good art books in
general. Who in their right mind would turn down a
donation of art books?
My email is : sophybluedagmar@...
Sincerely,
Sophy

I will be teaching Digital Photography next year, which is a new
course for me to teach and my school to offer. I am very excited
about this and especially excited by the record course enrollment of
6 classes of 18 students each (108 students total)! I need to order
supplies and finalize my curriculum this month and I am looking for
suggestions.

Thanks to a grant through our diocese I will have 6 IBM computers
installed with Microsoft Digial Image, Photoshop, and Illustrator
Software, 2 Epson printers, 2 scanners, and 20 Olympus 5.0 megapixel
digital cameras with memory cards, 2 sets of batteries for each
camera and 15 minute battery chargers! I have a budget of $1000 to
buy all the ink, paper and any other supplies I will need to last
the entire year. I have no idea how many ink cartridges we will go
through! Anyone teaching Digital Photography or similar courses
that could tell me how many ink cartridges you go through? Can
anyone offer me some suggestions as what other supplies you
recommend ordering? Or the cheapest place to buy inks, paper, and
any other supplies that you recommend?

I would also like to use some of this money to buy reference books
on digital photography as well as possibly a book relating to
history and aesthetics of photography. Does anyone have any favorite
photography books that they would recommend?

I would also be happy to share lesson plans with other photography
teachers if anyone is interested in sharing lessons.

Thanks so much, Amy

Amy,
As to a printer - have the students save their work and only print out work that excells. My students have online portfolios on Yahoo photos, they send me the link to the album once a week and I grade their work from there. Occasionally we print in color - and then only if the work is of a quality worth the paper and ink. Actually, I have no restrictions on color printing (we have a color laser printer) but I have found that I was drowning in paper and kids were tossing their prints, etc. so we went the online route. Another advantage to online portfolios is that the kids can view them from anywhere and if they are proud of their work, they show everybody! their parents, friends, other teachers....
How many minutes are your classes?

I have been called in for an audience with the principal tomorrow (Wednesday) morning to give input for new tables for my junior high/high school art room. The tables I have are in terrible condition - - very old and rickety, plus I have two sizes of rectangles, and a couple of round tables - leftovers from here and there I surmise. (I don't think the round work as well for this age group.) I do not have enough to seat the growing numbers of 7th and 8th grades I will have next year.  I know the sky will NOT be the limit, but any suggestions you have would be appreciated. What brand do you have that you like? What is an economical table that serves you well?  What size do you have and how many do you seat at that table? I like to give the students plenty of work space. The tables I have now vary in size, but the ones I like the most are 60X30 and I seat just two at them. I know it depends on myroom size, but I jusst need ideas.
Suggestions quickly please.
THANKS!

Marianne,
I have always had long rectangle tables until this year.   We bought all new ones and I picked out 6 large 60" square tables.   I seat 4 students at each and I LOVE them.
Pros:  kids don't "paw" at each other or kick one another, more room in the room, square is easier for me to walk around and assist, room in the middle of the table for supplies for all to share, they look good
Cons:  works great w/ 12 x 18" artwork but is a little crowded if you have bigger work

Hope this helps-I'm sure others have their favorite style too.

Hi,
I thought I would chime in on the table thoughts.....
I will be in the market for new tables soon - I have very long rectangle tables in my highschool art room - warning about those long tables, make sure there are extra supports in the middle (perhaps even extra legs) as my tables are bowing after 7 years.
Also - think about surface space - each student should be able to work on a 18 x 24 " piece of paper without having students overlap pages.
Good luck,
Sue

2 years ago I had my flimsy, laminate peeling, can't hold the weight of a 20lb bag of clay, ineffecient tables replaced with sturdy, all purpose and envy of all the other teachers art tables.  What I did was research the web for all types of "activity and art" tables.  Genuine art tables that are specifically made for an art classroom are quite expensive but worth the cost HOWEVER, my budget did not allow for those tables.  So, instead I turned to the activity tables which are made to withstand various conditions and uses.  The best part is because the tables are made for wet and dry activities it is sturdy for all types of art uses.  The company that our school worked with is called School Outfitters, I believe they have a website.   The table size that works well with my mixture of classes and class sizes is 72 x 30.

Hope this helps.

not sure who all out there is still reading the list (even if you are enjoying
your summer!) we still have 7 more student days to go!

anyway...a huge thank you to all who helped out with the national Youth Art
Month efforts for NAEA in Chicago this year. YAM presence was really felt. I
could not have pulled it together without you! (we doing some COOL things for NY
so let me know now if you are interested :-)!! )

Special thanks to Judy Decker (how fun was that to get to meet there?!) and
Marty from Square1Art. Also, to Greg Percy who generously lent us music for the
program ---he even offered to drive to Chicago and play live, but we couldn't
pull that off this year.

The PowerPoint is huge, but available on my web site (mid page) both with music
and without http://www.rrms.wlwv.k12.or.us/KielingL/YAM/2006.htm

I am going back and adding the instructor names and schools to the comment
section of each slide (the original presentation only has state names listed on
the slide. This way you will know who contributed which ones, etc. It's hard to
"go back" but I'll let you know when I add that version to the site.

This grassroots advocacy program is so much about the students and their
opportunities in quality programs. Please feel free to contact me with questions
or comments here or at school KielingL@...

I can't thank you all enough for you support and for all the hard work you do
for kids everywhere!

MANY, MANY THANKS~creatively, Linda in Oregon

My name is Marina Kecman, I live in Belgrade, Serbia and I'm a "new"
art teacher.
I teach drawing and some theory lectures in a school for creative
technologies, mostly oriented to 3D.
The school should become a college this autumn, so I shall teach
drawing and painting there, as well.
I'm happy I found this group, so I can share experiences with teachers
and professors all around the world.

This issue has surfaced within our newly merged department. We are not the
visual and
performing arts department. The choral music teachers at the elementary school
level were
talking about how difficult the lack of good furniture was to deal with. Our
department
supervisor replied that there was no funds available within the department
budget for such
stuff, to seek funds from the principals and then the principals either pass the
buck back to
the dept. or just don't respond. Over the years, I've had to scrounge for tables
from anything
that was put "out" from other teachers and I've even collected wooden chairs and
folding
chairs. I am curious about the solutions that other people have come up with and
wonder if
anybody is willing to post any responses.

Hi Joy,
Maybe my experience last year will be helpful to someone out there.    I went into a school with the "rickiest" old tables you ever saw.  One of them had actually collapsed on some students the year before and they just "jury-rigged" it back together and stuck it back in there.  The previous teacher had repeatedly asked for new tables.   I mentioned to the principal that we really needed new tables and got a ho-hum response.    In a casual conversation the vice-principal said "Put it in writing and do the research."
So I spent quite a bit of time on the internet, compared prices, companies etc.    I wrote up a written request and copied the page out of the catalog.   I submitted it in June.   Before you could say "new tables", the principal "found" some money, had them ordered and they were in my room.   It did not come out of my budget.
I know this won't work for everyone but I learned a lot about using a formal proposal rather than just a verbal request.
Try it!  All they can do is say no again.

From one "Joy" to another "Joy",

There are many people who can write about the equipment to
purchase but I'd like
to take a different approach to this issue, lougistics(sp?). First:
schedule...try your best to
have some influence here and as quickly as possible; you do not want to deal
with back-to-
back classes of diverse ages. Next what is the layout of your school? Are you in
a school
that's on one level? Is there an elevator(s)? Are there different buildings? Is
there a set up
where all of the K's are together, etc.? If you can set up a day with all of one
age group
together, then you'll not have to deal with many lesson plans each day. Can you
get some
metal, locking cabinents from your principal? You might be able to place them in
the hallways
to store art work and/or extra supplies. Can you get a large closet where you
can sneak in a
small desk? Believe me, it can be a small oasis from the lack of a room, having
a place where
you can gather your thoughts before you "get on the road". And last but not
least, get
everthing that you can that locks.

Good luck and keep us posted. There is a LOT of experience on
this list and
you don't have to rack your brain for ideas.
