I sort of remember subscribing to SPARK when they decided not to publish it
anymore. I was offered some other magazine in it's place until my subscription
was finished...I think it was crayola for kids magazine, and it wasn't near as
good. I felt bad too.

I have been trying to find it on the web or something, I'd love to have a
subscription to it, but I can't find it.

Does anyone know if it is still around, and if so, where one can find it to buy

Thanks!

oh my I do feel lucky. I have about 120 students. 2 classes of 4th, 2
of 5th, two of mixed age 6th-8th. 4th and 5th have 20 students each,
6-8th max of 16 unless I let them go over. I 'm 70% time and my
fulltime colleague teaches about 180 students. I am in awe of those of
you teaching over 500 students at a time!

Today's Quote

Tell me, I'll forget. Show me, I may remember. But involve me, and
I'll understand.

-Chinese Proverb

In so many ways this quote seemed to reiterate the need for supporting
the arts. Faced with class loads that are over 50-60% special ed this
year my struggles to keep children active in their learning become
more important. Each school has its own struggles but I think we all
want our students and community to understand the fundamental and
influential impact the arts can make on a students during the learning
process. The arts involve students in experimentation, exploration,
creation, and invention. The old Chinese Proverb understands the
impact the arts can make... perhaps someday we will all realize this
to be true again. What do you think?

I'm about to start a colored pencil assignment with my Art II class. (High
School level). Although I've used Prisma Colors before myself and in my
classroom, I've never really learned how to use them properly. I want to
teach my students how to use them from the ground up. I thought about
starting with using just one color to shade shapes etc, then maybe go into
using two colors, and so on. I eventually want them to do a simple
assignment (because even though this is an "advanced class", the students in
it aren't serious about art AT ALL and wouldn't be able to handle something
too complex), but I want them to do it with a good foundation of how prisma
colors work.

Does anyone work with Prisma Colors with high school and if so, do any of
you have any suggestions on how to introduce them and maybe a simple
assignment for them to do to practice? Thanks!

Greetings Art Educators,

A good introductory lesson to Prisma colors is the personal mandala.
This lesson has been done successfully with grade 5 and up. Sharon
Kennedy did it with high school students. I have some examples of
sixth graders on Incredible Art Department (from Gina Grant):
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/middle/Teachers/ggrant2.htm

Here are Sharon Kennedy's:
http://www.art-rageous.net/Hands.html
She has some followup colored pencil mandalas, too.
http://www.art-rageous.net/StudentCircles.html

An excellent colored pencil lesson is Ken Schwab's Focus Down Circle:
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/middle/Andy-Circle.htm
shown here are examples from Andy DiConti - middle school. this lesson
has been done with middle school through high school. More details can
be found in Ken Schwab's book Drawing Course 101.

Here is another excellent lesson by Susan Camin:
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/high/Susan-Design.htm

Here is an illustrated word lesson by Wendy Free:
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/high/wendy-drawing.htm

See Mike Saccos' colored penicl with foil tooling:
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/SubPlans/motivate.htm

Prisma colors on black paper are very striking.

More lesson ideas come up - enter Colored pencil lesson in the google

Greetings Art Educators,

A popular lesson with colored pencils is cubism. This can be done on
white paper or black for interesting effects.

Students draw a still life - portrait - animals - whatever - then
fracture the picture with straight lines breaking it up into many
shapes. The shapes are shaded lighter to darker - or darker to
lighter. Subtle contrasts are developed so shapes show up.

I don't have this lesson on Incredible Art Department, but it has been
around for a long time. I found the gist of it here:

Hi -
I'm wondering if anybody out there can tell me what their middle school
offers for the visual arts in NYS. Currently, we offer 10 week blocks,
4 quarters, but 8th grade seems to be under a threat. It is offered as
a choice against health. We have an 8 period day, and administration
is finding it difficult to make the schedule work for our large
population - 2200 students, 6 -7 -8. Any input is welcome!
Thanks, Lotte Petricone

When I taught elementary I saw 750 students. I saw
them 1 time a week for 40 minutes with 4 min in
between classes. Last year was my rough year. I
taught 6-7-and 8th grade along with Y-5, 1st, 2nd and
1 multiage class. What was difficult was the elem.
classes were for 35 minutes. I had 10 minutes to get
from one side of the town to another and be ready to
teach. It was hard because of the varying age groups.
With elementary I feel like I have to do a ton of
prep work. It was a very stressful year. This year I
am taching middle school only and love it,
unfortunately, I am cut to part time and they also
make me do recess duty at the elementary--yuck. You
take what you get when there are budget cuts. I work
on a $1,200.00 a yr. supply budget for all of my
students too which averages out to about $2.00 per
kid.

I have used PC pencils for about 15 years ... I start a new chapt of my life

It is in my plans to also teach facility with this material...ask it is a
common material they might keep with them for life. I will only have them
for 6 months of thier artful lives and I want to equip them so they can feel
comfortable with thier abilities to draw in a decorated
journal)...recording life. We have 85 min a day 3x a week. This is only one
area of art/matrls I will offer experiences in.

Anyway in the ART 1 & II classes I had thot to do a color wheel study (2
birds 1 stone) after the lesson I saw here or on the IAD...where the color
wheel is organic shapes in concentric circles of value...sort of mandala
like composition?...keeping the overall size 11x 14 or less...as anything
bigger gets into a difficult time keeping an even tone in large fields of
solid color/tone...and uses up the pencils like crazy.

This would be a project to show layering and the building up of the pc
pencil medium, for color mixing, tone and value.

I have planned to let them pick a shape...a template...like a feather, or
simple leaf or anything we can come up with that is long ish in shape, pop
bottle...some image they find relevant

Washington state creates performance-based arts tests
In what could be the first such move in the country, Washington state
has devised 60 K-12 performance-based assessments in the visual arts,
music, dance and theater. State education official AnnRene Joseph says
the assessments, which are optional for district use, will help ensure
the arts receive the appropriate level of attention.   Seattle
Post-Intelligencer (11/28)

I'm not sure how i feel about this. Mostly i feel it takes away the
spontaneity of the arts and the magic moments. And i've dreaded the
thought of a state assessment for years.
We are between a rock and hard place between our advocacy and knowing
just what the parts provide and battling for our programs. if i have to
"prove" the magic moments, I'm not sure I can on some kind of state
test. Sometimes those moments don't kick in for a long time.

Is this something we want to battle for ? or will it be some thing put
upon us?
What I have always loved about being an art teacher is getting to those
"places" that may change minute from minute and having a curriculum
open-ended enough to allow the getting to.

I only see state assessments as way for the "producers" to package and
teachers using the package instead of going with the best ideas.

I don't know. I cling to the arts as way to encourage what is not so
measured. I would hate to be driven into some kind of time driven
process for measuring the process.

Thank you all for your suggestions for school program decorations.
Your ideas have all been taken into consideration. I love the idea of
huge snowflakes to hang from the ceiling- however, the gym has HUGE
ceilings (there's not a ladder tall enough to reach the top). I
really appreciate all of the feedback!

Patty,
A few years ago Oklahoma had arts testing as a part of it's PASS testing
which is the annual state test in all subjects. I was teaching in a very
"prestigious" district at the time and we were instructed to "teach to the
test". We were carefully watched to see how "our" students performed. On
the pro side it acted as a sort of reminder to keep one's scope and sequence
on track and make sure all things were being covered. On the con side some
of the questions appeared to many art teachers to be totally inappropriate
for the age level they were asked and often the test would take place before
it made sense to cover that material in the curriculum so rather than a
natural flow you either had to introduce concepts into projects where they
didn't really make sense or you had to set aside production time and just
stop and do some intense rote learning to make sure the kids knew those
concepts before the test.

I am no longer in a public school but my understanding is that the OK State
Dept. dropped the arts testing. It was not a successful experiment.
Ann Gray is that correct-is the arts portion no longer a part of the PASS
testing?

Cindy, that is correct, the arts portion is no longer a part of the PASS
testing in Oklahoma. I agree that the questions were totally
inappropriate for the age levels. For awhile we heard rumors that the
art portion would be re-vamped and added back in, but I have not heard
that rumor this year.

Hi Susie,

Off the top of my head, there's Chagall, and I believe Matisse designed
a few. Also Tiffany, of course.

I've had a lot of luck using Frank Lloyd Wright (more known as an architect, but

There is a simple lesson pertaining to just this (Frank Lloyd Wright) and
stained-glass in the Oct. 04 issue of Arts and Activities. The title is Frank
Lloyd Light by Clay R. Mosley.

This stained glass activity -- kids love ‹ and is always uniquely their own
in design. They like it because it is beautiful, impressive, and LARGE.

(It¹s kind of like making big snowflakes or stars from black paper, with
holes/spaces/gaps cut into the folds. The holes are later backed by art
tissue or by wax paper laminations.)

Cut large craft paper (black) into big squares, about 2¹ by 2¹ is good.
Older kids can do this for you. Younger ones need them precut. (ANY size is
fine...huge ones...small ones...but this 2x2 is impressive when displayed
and fun for kids because it¹s bigger than usual things they do.) Then fold
to make six points, if you want a snowflake shape. Otherwise, just fold like
any ³snowflake/star². This same project can be done with ANY shape...it
doesn¹t have to be the snowflake or star. Then, the kids cut big simple
holes and shapes from the folds. BIG. The bigger the holes, the prettier the
results. Then unfold and flatten.

Next, back the holes with colorful choices of translucent paper:
Ideas ---
1. Cover each hole with a different color of colorful tissue.
2. Cover the entire shape with one color of tissue.
3. Cover the holes with white tissue that has been dyed with liquid
watercolors or other paper dye.
4. Cover the holes with wax paper laminated with tissue, or grated crayon,
or anything you like.

Display the stained glass shapes in the window.

PS My second graders liked doing a huge rectangle that eventually filled the
entire school window...working together...each child doing a rectangle and
then joining them all together.

The Double Diamond Video Company puts out an excellent video on stained glass..
the history of and a demonstration of how the glass is made, how color is
infused and then a brief demo of how a stained glass window is made. It is
fairly short.. quickly paced and has some music and shows some great windows in
the European Cathedrals and some modern pieces too. It holds the kid's
attention and they enjoy it and are stoked to do any related projects
afterwards. I don't think showing the entire video with K-1, maybe even 2 would
be wise.. perhaps just a small section of whatever concepts you were
emphasizing. I believe the length is about 14 minutes total.

I wanted to tell you about a survey on how the No Child Left Behind
Act is influencing public schools. Congress needs to know how NCLB
is affecting our communities. The participation of concerned
citizens like us is vital to the effort to improve our public
schools.

Please take this quick online survey on how No Child Left Behind has
affected your child, school, or community. (Even if you haven't
noticed its affect, please take a moment to tell us that.)

Go to _www.GiveKidsGoodSchools.org_
(http://www.givekidsgoodschools.org/) to take the survey.

It is critical that government and education leaders hear from
public education supporters about the impact of this law. With your
input, we will provide policymakers with concrete, 'on the ground'
information about the effectiveness of No Child Left Behind.

Results of this survey will be reported to Congress, the
Administration and state policymakers.

Now in Oklahoma the districts have a choice over how
they assess in the arts and they get to make their own
assessments. The "assessment" is supposed to be given
to grades 3-8 and can be performance based or
traditional. My district has a traditional test that
was created by the district and the results are
reported to the state department at the end of the
school year. - Mikel
