Greetings Art Educators,

Dr. Hatfield has sent me an updated list of some of the available grants:
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/news/NAEAGRANT.htm

Check your country education office for more. They may have available
mini-tech grants and service learning grants.

It was posted before that many of these grants go unclaimed - or end
up going to the same people as they are the only ones who apply. Many
of these grants have deadlines this month - See what you need to do to
apply.

Dr. Hatfield sends me updates to this file about once a week. Check
back often. The list is not comprehensive. I won't be posting the
updates to the list all the time.

Both of these pages are linked from Art News on Incredible Art

Hi Theresa,

Welcome to the list.

The images in the photos section are from Cynthia McCarthy's students.

I found the information by entering packing tape sculpture in the
search. I also was able to find the page on IAD using the Google
Search on the site:
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/high/Kris-TapeFigures.htm

This has been a popular lesson for high school. I saw it first at my
hubby's school (their work was done before the Arts and Activites
article came out).

Have fun with it.

Tammy, Could you let 3 -5 upper grade students research an artist or style of
art and make a collaborative bulletin display? You can have starting points for
them, like posters, quotes, etc. If needed, give them the option of only filling
up half the bulletin board. If you plan to leave the display up for two weeks,
you could have the next group start working on their display during the 2nd week
so that it will be ready to put up when the first one comes down. If your
schedule won't permit lunch time meetings it could make it a little tough
logistically. Creating Illustrations for books or poems would be fun. Susan

Tammy,

I have a great board that I use not only because it looks great but it
is a teaching tool as well. It's called "Flippin' Facts". I tack a
work of art in the center of the board. Around it, I place colored
file folders with the opening pointing down so that the students can
look under it. In each file folder I place the answer to a question
that is written on the front of the file folder. The following are the
questions that I ask:
1. Name of the Artist
2. Name of the work of art
3. What year was it created
4. What culture produced this work of art
5. What period in art did it come from
6. What medium was used
7. What is the focal point
8. Did you know? (any additional facts like you'd to include)

The kids are really fascinated by this board and it get tons of
activity. Hope this helps.

Dear Art Educators,

Here is something your art club might want to get involved with....

Kathy D. posted this to Getty and ArtsEducators list.

"We've Got Your Back" - Back packs filled with school supplies
http://dosomething.org/

This is a student organized collection of backpacks of school supplies
for children uprooted by the hurricane. This was reported on CNN today.
-----------------------------------------------------------
Look at the suggested list of supplies and tweak them to also include
a pad of drawing paper and package of markers. You can send them to
the address given on the site.

Hogg Middle School

Houston, TX 77009

More details are to come on the site - check back.

Since the students are spread all throughout the area - in several
states, I don't know how they will get the back packs to them. Teach
for America is to get the back packs to the children, but I couldn't
find anything about the project on their site (yet).

Dear Art Educators,

Ohio now has some standards based lessons on the Department of Education site:
http://ims.ode.state.oh.us/ODE/IMS/Lessons/default.asp
Annamae Heiman (an ArtsEducators and Getty list member) has an
excellent lesson for seventh grade -- "Talking Textiles" mud cloth:
personal identity symbols.

Right now, there aren't any visual art lessons for Pre K - 4 - but you
will want to see what they have for the other arts (for planning some
comprehensive lessons).
Check out visual arts for grades 5 through 8 (4 lessons) and high
school (2 lessons).

Since these lessons also mesh with the National Standards - they would
adapt to your state standards as well.

I have a link to these on my Art Education Resources page.
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/middle/arted.htm

Jeni - if you see this. The lesson on mud cloth is well researched and
would be a good one to include in a Unit plan for middle school on
textiles or African Art. If you use it - be sure to credit your
source.

Greetings Art Educators,

Kathleen - art education member - wants to tie in the Pinwheels for
Peace with sentiments of hope for the victims of the hurricane.
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/Files/Melissa-pin.htm

What if you made the pinwheels really nice.... and then auctioned them
off after September 21 with money raised going towards relief efforts
for the victims?

Have $5.00 be the minimum bid. You could have a silent auction. Have a
display of them inside (pinwheels mounted into a wood board) with a
sheet of paper at each pinwheel. Folks would sign their name and
amount of money they wish to bid. Your graphic arts students could
design a poster and the sheets to sign that are displayed with the
pinwheels. Of course, I am assuming the pin wheels are displayed
outside on a clear day - no rain. If you do plan to do the auction and
it is raining September 21 - you might want to just have your
installation inside.

Pinwheels could be laminated before they are cut so they will last longer.
There are many ways you could do the pinwheels that would even appeal
to high school students - and be a challenging lesson. You could
combine them with technology - do a photocollage on one side (with
Photoshop) - print text on the other side. Most printers will now
print on tab board. Students could print a copy for them to keep.

Hi,
I have seen the aid arrangements when the Tsunami struck a few states in South
India.

Most of the time what the effected groups need desperately are food, clean water
and clothing to tide over the immediate problem. When they are surrounded by
water and filth, art supplies may not be of help in the first stage.Where will
they sit and draw or paint, when they are homeless and hungry?
Once the water recedes and they have homes to go back to, maybe art will play a
vital role for a healing touch.

I am overwhelmed by the response, to my query about whether teachers should
display their works.I suggest that we teachers, could collectively hold an
online exhibition of our works for sale and contribute the proceeds to the
hurricane victims.I am willing to contribute one of my paintings for this
cause. The money collected, could be sent to schools in New Orleans, for
rehabilitation work.

Kamla,
India.

Dear Art Educators,

I am responding to Kamla's post on Art Education list - and Patty's
post on ArtsEducators.

Kamla suggested a sale of art teachers' work with proceeds going
towards hurricane relief. Get your district teachers together to have
a sale (or auction). Each teacher could donate one work of art. Have a
silent auction - (with minimum bid shown on sign up sheets). Kamla had
suggested an online sale of list members' works but that would be
difficult to coordinate.

Art Sale proceeds could go directly to the Red Cross - or could be
used to purchase needed goods (like blankets and pillows). There are
several collection spots in my community for relief efforts. Our local
newspaper had a list of things that are needed now.

Hey there,

A friend told me about an "Elvis Sighting" that I might want to check out. Most
of you have probably already seen the Elvis Warhol style done in post it notes.
Apparently it was done by some "office" people with time on their hands.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone had incorporated it into a lesson. I teach
elementary and off the top of my head thought about copying it or having the
kids duplicate on grid paper. Any ideas?

If you haven't seen it, google "elvis post its" and flickr is also in the title
of the site.

Thank you, thank you very much,

Dear Art Educators,

Here is the site for the Post It Note Elvis:

This includes how they did it:
http://www.capstrat.com/cs/insight/articles/post-itnotes.cfm

This includes Why Elvis:
http://www.capstrat.com/cs/insight/articles/post-itmodernism.cfm

Why not try it with your school administrator? Or some local hero?

Students could plan their portrait on 1/4 inch graph paper - then
can figure out how many Post It notes they would need - how many of
each color. You will want to find out what colors are available in
your area first. Student could complete the mural in sections (12" x
12") then put the sections all together. You could tie in Chuck
Close by having the students put some marker pattern on the Post It
notes.

You could put a sheet of plexiglas over the finished "mural" to
protect it. Have it so you can easily take plexiglas down to make a
new mural. Do something different each year.

If you do this - send image to share.

Cathy,

I have a degree in Graphic Design with a major in fashion illustration.
I was a senior fashion illustrator with 2 major dept. stores before becoming
an art teacher.

My teacher was fabulous. She recommended looking at comic strips, you know
the serious ones like Mary Worth.

She had many, many swipes from the newspapers to compare and trace for
practice. I personally loved Antonio Lopez. He has passed away now.

We worked with black prismacolors on the front of 360 illustration paper
pads. After outlining we then turned the paper over and shaded with
prismacolor
grays. The grays were picked with cools or warms but not together and
usually 2 shades apart like 2, 4 and 6 for contrast when reproduced. Then you
turn
the paper back over and shaded on the front with the prismacolor. You can
do this with colored markers and colored prismacolor pencils too. This is
also the method I used for storyboards and comps when I was in advertising.

If you have any more questions I'd be happy to answer. The field is almost
completely gone though so prepare them for the reality of that. I was warned
but didn't listen.
Luckily it all turned out well for me and I wouldn't trade it for anything.

4. EXPLORING THE ISSUES

TEACHERS URGED TO TEACH IN SHELTERS:
http://www.cnn.com/2005/EDUCATION/09/01/katrina.schools/index.html

While Louisana's school districts across the state are
dealing with displaced students and the havoc wreaked by
Hurricane Katrina, state Education Superintendent Cecil
Picard has urged teachers to work in the areas they have
been taken for shelter, wanting "the stability of a class-
room as soon as possible". The state of Texas is attempt-
ing to provide textbooks, while Louisiana's Dept. of Ed-
ucation is trying to address displaced Lousiana teach-
ers' payroll and temporary benefits needs.

Students may be very interested in learning how they
can help with the volunteer efforts needed to mobilize
response efforts in hurricane-affected areas. Numerous
volunteer agencies getting supplies to stricken areas
are listed below; you can also consider this site for
teacher resources in helping students to make a differ-
ence in their world.

hensive list.

ALSO CONSIDER . . . .
As a class, select the charity you wish to donate to,
and then brainstorm to find one or more ways to raise
money as a school, in your community. Students will feel
empowered by giving assistance; consider some of the fol-
lowing options as ways to raise funds locally.

- Organize a walkathon.
- Try penny drives, or bringing in coin collections;
these coins can then be converted at machines at lo-
   cal grocery stores.
- Mobilize community support by organizing meetings
with student councils and town leaders.
- Organize collection cans at local businesses.
- Hold a town square bake sale.
- Older students can get sponsors for a dance-a-thon.
- Ask for items to be donated for a community auction.
- Compile a list of resources and resources persons in
your community in case of a natural disaster; also cre-
ate a list of possible areas and people who might need
   extra help.
- Add your suggestions to this list. Write to:

What fun. Sounds Great! Thank you for the reply to my Elvis question.

You know, this kinda applies to those people who write in wanting to plan a
yearly art program. This is only my second year, I know, but I CANNOT stop the
ideas from coming. I read SchoolArts, Arts and Activities, live life and now
utilize this membership. My plans are always adjusting. I am up here at school
on this Labor Day holiday to revamp my projects for the next few weeks. I am
postponing 3 that I had on the books and plugging in 2 from this month's Art and
Activities and the Pinwheels for Peace project (although I will not finish by
the official date), and of course I have to fit "Elvis" in somewhere.

If you are just starting out, don't sweat it. There is SO MUCH out there to
pull from and to make your own. My problem of course is trying to decide what
to give to which grade level and to fit it ALL in...there's just no way...but
ain't it great!!

Hi,

I have been looking for a way to integrate art into children's sunday
school lessons at my church. I was just wondering if any of y'all
know of any online resources for this type of thing. Or maybe some of
you have made some yourself that you can share...

Thanks,
Amy

Dear Art Educators,

Some of you may have surplus art supplies - or even slightly used.
I have talked to two individuals from Houston Independent School
District and found that art supplies are indeed needed to handle the
additional enrollment.

Send to:

Art Supplies - Attention Anne Silvers
HISD Warehouse Operations
Central Receiving
228 McCarty
Houston, Texas 77029

Of course basic school supplies are needed, too. They will have
thousands of new students enrolling. See their web site for required
supplies (you may have some of them in surplus, too).

If I hear form other school districts, I will let you know. I wrote to
Birmingham, Alabama, too.
If you hear of schools needing supplies - do let us know.

Yes, there are more immediate needs - like food, water, blankets,
toiletries etc - but other organizations are covering those needs.

Before donating any of your art supplies, it would be wise to check
with your administrator first.

Dear Art Educators,

I did hear back from Birmingham, Alabama schools. Birmingham has
around 35,000 evacuees.

If you want to send art supplies (or any kind of supplies) send to:

Josephine Hollins
Birmingham Public Schools
Davis Center
417 29th Street South
Birmingham, AL 35233

Indicate on package if you are sending art supplies. Josephine also
noted that underwear and shoes are needed as well as money for
uniforms.

Those of you wanting a "adopt" a teacher - might browse this site:
http://www.adoptaclassroom.com/
This site lists all of the public schools in the United States.
Browse the state you want - then go to city.
You could get the address there of a school - send a letter addressed
to the administrator and see if he/she will connect you to the school
art teacher.

Do we have any list members teaching in cities that have a large
population of evacuees? Could we help YOU? Reply to me off list with
your name and school address and I will round help help for you.

List members whose schools were affected contact me too with how we can help.
Let us know that you are safe.

As I am brand new to this group I would like to thank you for accepting
my membership request. I was wondering if anyone had some new ideas
for teaching Photoshop and or Illustrator at the high school level? I
am not so much looking for lesson plans... just ideas I could make into
my own planning.

Hello everyone,

I am planning to do a lesson using Ben Jones as my exemplar having my
7th and 8th grade students make plaster face and arm casts. I have
ordered (and finally just received) plaster impregnated gauze strips
and am now worried that I may not have enough. I have 220 students.
Does anyone have any idea how much plaster gauze(in pounds or rolls) I
will need to complete this project?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Laurie
