Ada, I have known of many interviews taking place very close to the month before school starts. Many teachers contemplating a move don't want to give up their bird in the hand until they are assured of a new job. Programs, monies change and that seems to be the order of business "at the last moment".

Be ready for possible questions that pertain to what you can do for their specific population or setup. Be honest about skills as well as areas that can still be developed. Many try to inflate their own selves ( I know how easy it is to do) thus giving an innacurate picture of themselves. Ask yourself "If I was considering hiring ME, what would I base my decision on?"         Peace

Ada,
let us know how your search goes.
Check with United Cerebral Palsy to see if they are hiring.
They have Saturday programs for teens & it's a good introduction with kids
w/special needs, as for the most part the kids & the staff are pretty easy
going. The work is not difficult, but it would require you to come up with
your own project ideas.

Rudolf Steiner & Montessori schools are often open to art & creative
techniques. (again, they don't pay well, but a good
way to start, as you said)

I have found, in my experience, working with physically disabled children &
alternative (open) school settings a great way to get one's feet wet in
working with special needs. I worked on a Traumatic Brain Injury/ Coma
Recovery Unit & found it a wonderful learning experience. Later on in
my profession, I wanted more challanges (lesson plans can get
a little monotaneous working w/cognitively impaired/physically disabled) &
focused on working w/ ED/MR,
psychiatric disorders, behaviour disorders, neurological disorders & gifted
& talented populations. These populations
can be very intense & overwhelming, but with the right training, extremely
rewarding.

Ada, if you have any questions, feel free to email me.
Are you on artsednet or any special educators or creative arts therapy
lists? They are much more active than this list & provide good networking
opportunities.

Heather,

A book I have for many, many years is very useful to any anyone wanting a book that is very good for a person teaching at a K- through ....

The book "Art and the Creative Teacher" has been around a long time.  I saw the book 30 years ago and purchased it even though I have taught at the college level since 1966.  The authors are Kelly Fearling, Evelyn Beard, Nik Krevitsky and Clyde Martin.  The company who published it in '71 is W.S. Benson and Company, Austin, Texas.

There are formulas for making finger paint, parafin block, modeling materials, bakers clay etc. , lists of books, educational materials, special teaching aids and so on.  \

I like the introduction of artists ( Kandinsky, Picasso, Degas etc.) work interlaced with the work of childern and the generl attitude of the book.  Any level of instructor would appreciate it.

I know it was published 31 years ago and may be hard to find, but it would be worth your effort to locate a copy of it.  I just called the Benson company and they said the book is out of publication and may be difficult to find.  Keep looking it would be worth the effort if you found it.

The person I spoke with said Davis Publications is a good resource for K-12  Art.

Heather,

I teach adults with learning difficulties in the UK. I'm not sure what
your K- classifications mean. I sometimes start off the year with
students making a book over a few weeks which describes their every
day lives- A picture of their house on the cover with a window that
opens revealing a self portrait. A pop- up picture of their journey to
class. A page on their favourite foods, one on their friends etc. I
use simple pop- up and rotate structures wherever possible to make the
books more exciting and bring precut shapes on card for students who
can't draw to colour in( eg a bus , car or foot to stick into page on
journey to work, a cup and plate for food page etc). I find this
exercise allows me to really get to know my students and their
ablities within the first few weeks. Even students with very little
ability can often scribble into a shape which can be glued into the
book. As we go along the students often personalise their books
further by adding in things that are specific to their interests.

Someone mentioned that there is are lists dedicated to special
educational needs. If you know of any , could you post their adresses.

Best wishes
Ricki (Cambrideshire, U. K)

I am in the process of completing a mystery board game. I am looking for a
solution that I have papers numbered 1 to 10, the person places their finger
on the blank paper and began to rub (touch) the paper that then reveals a
number from 1 to 10, it is to see who did it (that’s the mystery part).

My question is what kind of spray or other method of approach can I buy or
use to spray the paper, I want the paper after I spray it to remain blank
(clear), until I touch or rub the paper to reveal the number for the Mystery
Game to work.

Thank you for taking the time to answer my question,

Dear Ann,

I hope that I can help you. My name is Lisa and I teach elementary art in three schools in Verona, New Jersey.  Color theory is a an important part of my curriculum  for many reasons. One, because it involves the use of vocabulary terms that students of all ages need to know, (for example, primary, secondary, intermendiate, analogous, tint, shade, tone, complementary, monochromatic)especially when they discuss art in real terminology. Elementary students love to tell you if a painting is warm or cool, or look at a Van Gogh, and discuss how the colors mix in your eye. Art terms often show up on SAT tests or other college placement exams, so we all need to learn them.
Secondly, mixing color, and understanding what effects colors have on one another makes a student more of an active participant in the art they make. There is more involvement on the part of the artist when they paint with a color they mixed themselves, rather than select one from a box of crayolas. A kindergartener is fascinated when blue and yellow really make green. To them, it's magical, but it's really scientific, and more importantly, and exercize in problem solving.
Having an understanding of color theory also prepares students for later life when they have to choose a sofa to match a rug, shutters to match a house, or something as simple as planning a garden or selecting a tie. Elementary art education is different from when I went to school in the 1970s (picture the Brady bunch-Cindy was a bit older than me when I enjoyed that show in the first grade, and by the way, my old first grade classroom is now one of my artrooms!)  We didn't have an art room, just a space in the basement, where we made crummy collages out of cut up magazines and made puppets our of dish detergent bottles.) We now know that children are capable of making real art, and that the learning process is much more important than the end product they create. I often will have my students spend an art period just mixing colors and creating swatches that they creatively name things like "popsicle" or "windy" (Sorry no gross names allowed!) Since some students aren't able to fit art classes into their schedule in high school, it's neccessary to give them a strong foundation in their elementary years, as it might be their only opportunity to learn valuable skills and information. Elementary children love art, and thrive on learning new terms and skills. Colors are exciting to them, and giving them cups of paint and a palette to mix them on gives them great joy. Color theory is just one aspect of a strong elementary art curriculum, but it is one that translates into real lifeskills as well as an appreciation and understanding of the esthetics of color.
Well, I hope this helps, let me know if you need anything else. Have fun, but work HARD in school, it will pay off later in life.  ;-) Lisa

Some of the "spam" bothers me a great deal, others not at all. The ones that
simply want to get me to go to their site without any thought to art
education bugs me. If there is any educational value to the site then the
person promoting the site needs to let me know. If they only want me to go
and "oooh" and "aaah" over their art, well.... I have almost 400 students
who want that from me every day. The posters advertising art materials are
more suitable to this list, even tho I guess those are the true spammers -
at least their postings may have some relevance to the classroom. Just my
2cents. :-)

ORIGINAL QUESTION:

I am doing a research project on color theory and its nesscessity in elementary art education.

Hi Ann,
I  teach Kindergarten and Grade One art in an urban public school district near Boston, MA.  I  teach students the warm and cool colors when we do a lesson based on Vincent van Gogh's painting of "Starry Night". Students learn color mixing to make shades and tints when we do a unit on Claude Monet's paintings of Waterliles. We also introduce the primary colors by reading the children's book "Mouse Paint" and experimenting  with mixing the colors of red, yellow and blue. Color theory is an important piece of our early childhood art program and we are always trying to think of new ways to include it in our projects.   Good luck with your research!  Carolyn Mills  Art Educator, Early Learning Center,  Chelsea, MA

I don't consider art-related info, books, or websites spam unless they are constantly hounding the list.  I find most of it interesting & informative.  How else are we going to expand our horizons & how else are these people going to let us know about their interests & projects.  I hate to say it but we are a targeted market!  As long as they're not obnoxious about it let them stay.  (They might learn a thing or two)

I don't mind art related advertisements, but I wonder if there is a way to
either have it just listed in the files under a 'products' category or if the
people listing the products can earmark it as 'art product advertisement' if
they don't state anything substantial in their emails (so I can choose to delete
it). Like on other professional lists (puptcrit or various doll artists lists) I
may suggest certain materials, but do it so in the context of the topic &
suggest ways it can assist the person in question. I may go in depth ways the
materials or books can be develop or enhance that person's learning - and
usually it's for the benefit of that individual & I don't profit from providing
the info.

Does that help?

Ken,
Just looking through the AEAI membership list, and don't see your name on the
list. Are you in an administrative position now, seems like you were near
Indy someplace. Or, are you in the art room? I know you used to be quite
active, but haven't seen you around.

hello! i'm writing on behalf of my love, david. he's not very
net-literate, and has been trying to find a new art teaching
position near seattle, washington for quite some time.

i am the opposite... an internet nerd, but no knowledge about the
art world. i'd love any tips you could give. i've tried monster
and hotjobs, but he just gets spam emails that have nothing to do
with art.

he currently teaches high school age kids part-time at the academy
of fine art in seattle, but wants additional work, either full or
part-time.

i posted his resume at
http://resumes.hotjobs.com/davidclohman/artinstructor although
it's in a pretty bad format.

i apologize in advance if this is considered spam.. i really don't
know where else to post it. but if you know a better place to post
it, please let me know!

Kimberly,
Your letter is not spam. Education jobs aren't usually
posted on sites such as hotjobs or monster.com. He
should first go through the placement office of the
college he graduated from. Look through the online
placement offices of all colleges in Washington- maybe
some of them post their openings without a log-in or
graduation requirement. Ball State University posts
their education job openings online for free at:
http://www.bsu.edu/webapps/viewjobs/Default.asp
Maybe you can find others that do the same.

At any rate, most of the jobs will begin posting at
the end of February and pick up in March and April. I
got my art teaching job one day before school started
in August. David will also need to cruise the
Washington Dept. of Ed. website at
http://access.wa.gov/education/index1.asp?L1=Education
.
You can also access the Washington State Board of
Education at http://www.sbe.wa.gov/ .

If David graduated from a college outside of
Washington, he will need to get Washington
certification. This can be found at
http://www.k12.wa.us/Cert/teacher/teacherinformation.asp

Finally, David can find Washington jobs at
http://www.wateach.com/DefaultWA.cfm?CFID=1333749&CFTOKEN=55baff0-a0397a31-f15f-\

If these links go to the second line, you may need to
cut and paste the links in your browser to get there.

Has David ever thought about teaching private art lessons.  I have a couple of students and I really enjoy it.  You'd be surprised at the response because art programs in schools are getting so thinned out, that parents are looking for something like that.  Just a thought.

Hi,
I'm new to the group. I'm an art teacher in Georgia and I've got a
strong interest in teaching art using technology. With that in mind,
I've created some teaching sites (always in progress) that I use to
teach. I hope you can use them also. I love feedback on what I should
add and what could work better. Enjoy!
