Can anyone tell me how to explain "white" to my kids??  They always want to include white into the color category but I don't know how to explain to them that it is not a color.  I tell them that it is the absence of color, but how else can I say it to get them to understand?  Thanks for any feedback.

Just a heads up for some of you folks whose rural towns are on or near a
railroad line. Artrain USA is starting its new exhibition this month. The
exhibition is Native Views: Influences of Modern Culture and promises to be
exceptional. The exhibition starts in Tempe after a preview in MN.

If you want to check out the Artrain and exhibition, the website is
http://www.artrainusa.org/

A list of cities for the three-year tour is on the site. A teacher guide is
listed on the site, but I have yet to be able to download it.

Art education students in the NAU pre-service program will be acting as
education guides when the train stops in Flagstaff later this month. What a
wonderful opportunity for these undergraduates.

My students and I will be trained April 21 and I will be able to share
exactly what the exhibition and tours will include.

From rainy Sedona,
Pam

I answered this question off list with my ideas - also recommending more
variety and cultures. I think you should go with artists and cultures that
youcan easilyfind visual resources for. Check Shoreward Prints and Crystal
Productions catalogs (for videos).
Here is my own personal list of "must have" prints/artists:

I had believed that according to the science of color theory, white
light was all of the light rays combined. A prism( or rain drops)
helps our eyes to break up the light into the rainbow.

Hi,
I just wanted to tell you that I put "Penguin Sunsets" by my second graders
online this past week. I saw this lesson on Artsonia, and I am sorry to say, I
can't remember whose lesson it was. If anyone remembers, please let me know.
We used the book, "A Penguin's Tale," as inspiration. The illustrations are
gorgeous. On day 1, students used Sax Ultra Plus Tempera (Check out the
colors!!!!) to paint warm sunset skies and cool waters, mixing colors wet in
wet. We watered the paints down as we applied them to the paper and spread
them. Kids had a wonderful time, full of ooohs and ahhs as the colors blended
so beautifully. On day two we added white painted iceburgs and snowbanks over
the water and horizon, overlapping the sky in some places. While the paint was
still wet, students tipped in a TINY amount of sky colors to the white in places
to add reflective color to the white snow at sunset. They also added sunset
colors (complementary to the water) to the DRY paint oceans, reflective of the
skies. Students saw in a demonstration in the beginning what happens when you
add wet orange colors to blue water if you do it wet in wet, so they were
content to wait until the water was dry on day two to add reflections on water.
Whitecaps and foam were added with dry brush if they wished. The remainder of
the project was collage and/or painted penguins in all sorts of body shapes.
Some were sliding on snowbanks, some laying down, some silhuoetted tiny in the
distance, etc. Students used multiple cutting techniques to make groups of
penguins. Size variation to show perspective was encouraged. Kids had a blast
with this assignment. They were encouraged to add polar bears, walrus, birds,
etc. if they wished. Check out Stacie's in 2-1! Connor's in 2-2, and so many
more. You can see them on our website, www.sjs.org, click on "Stories of SJS",
click on "Arts Stories," click on "Linda Woods", click on "Lower School
Gallery." Click on 2nd grade in the media gallery and look for "Sunset
Penguins." Thanks to whoever had this project on Artsonia. It was great fun,
very age appropriate, a great way to work with warm and cools, drybrush
complementaries, reflection, multiple cutting, and perspective (large to small).
If you think you want to try it with your kids, order "A Penguin's Tale" from
Amazon or somewhere else. The illustrations are beautiful and inspired a lot of
discussion about cool and warm, pattern, perspective, silhouettes, basic shapes
(various body positions of penguins), reflections, and shadows in snow.

Subject: Now Why did God Create Children?
jdecker4art
Send Email Send Email

(Matt is you read this - I need one Grandchild so I can do to him/her what
Aunt Debbie did to you - LOL. It will be "pay back" -BEG).

Why did God create children?....Run that by me again....(grin).

So what if this isn't Art Ed related....It is way too funny to not
share....Enjoy! I have seen it before but never forwarded it -
so I am making up for that time. One of my Dollmaker friends sent
this email to me - an oldie but goodie.

WHY GOD CREATED CHILDREN (AND IN THE PROCESS, GRANDCHILDREN)

To those of us who have children in our lives, whether they are our own,
grandchildren, nieces, nephews, or students...here is something to make you
chuckle.

Whenever your children are out of control, you can take comfort from the
thought that even God's omnipotence did not extend to His own children.
After creating heaven and earth, God created Adam and Eve. And the first
thing he said was "DON'T!"

"Don't what?" Adam replied.

"Don't eat the forbidden fruit." God said.

"Forbidden fruit? We have forbidden fruit? Hey Eve...we have forbidden
fruit!!!!!"

"No Way!"

"Yes way!"

"Do NOT eat the fruit!" said God.

"Why"

"Because I am your Father and I said so!" God replied, wondering why He
hadn't stopped creation after making the elephants. A few minutes later, God
saw His children having an apple break and He was ticked!

"Didn't I tell you not to eat the fruit?" God asked.

"Uh huh," Adam replied.

"Then why did you?" said the Father.

"I don't know," said Eve.

"She started it!" Adam said

"Did not!"

"Did too!"

"DID NOT!"

Having had it with the two of them, God's punishment was that Adam and Eve
should have children of their own. Thus the pattern was set and it has never
changed.

BUT THERE IS REASSURANCE IN THE STORY!

If you have persistently and lovingly tried to give children wisdom and they
haven't taken it, don't be hard on yourself. If God had trouble raising
children, what makes you think it would be a piece of cake for you?

THINGS TO THINK ABOUT!

1. You spend the first two years of their life teaching them to walk and
talk. Then you spend the next sixteen telling them to sit down and shut up.

2. Grandchildren are God's reward for not killing your own children.

3. Mothers of teens now know why some animals eat their young.

4. Children seldom misquote you. In fact, they usually repeat word for word
what you shouldn't have said.

5. The main purpose of holding children's parties is to remind yourself that
there are children more awful than your own.

6. We childproofed our homes, but they are still getting in.

ADVICE FOR THE DAY: Be nice to your kids. They will choose your nursing home
one day.

AND FINALLY: IF YOU HAVE A LOT OF TENSION AND YOU GET A HEADACHE, DO WHAT IT
SAYS ON THE ASPIRIN BOTTLE:

"TAKE TWO ASPIRIN" AND "KEEP AWAY FROM CHILDREN"
-----------------------------------------------------
For all of you on Spring break ENJOY! REST! RELAX! HAVE FUN!
My husband bought a new set of golf clubs with all the money I save by not
coloring my hear anymore. That works for both of us. I decided a long time
ago to stop when I hit 50. I just stopped a couple years early when the
price shot up to $50.00 (cheap stuff didn't work anymore).

Kelli - I'm sending this to the other lists too. Good question!

How do you explain White to kids?

Way to go! Bring in science AND pigments color theory. My kiddies always
liked telling me I was wrong after they had their science lesson...SO I
started teaching BOTH in my class.

White in science: reflection of nearly all light from all visible
wavelength (so yes all colors - BUT all reflected)
White in pigments: lacking any color or hue
Black in pigments: theoretically all colors added -- and in science all
colors absorbed - no reflected light. (and folks who like watercolors -
black is "evil" --grin - I didn't use black in my watercolors)
Microsoft® Encarta® Reference Library 2003 will back me up.
See Artlex for white pigments (what makes white). Titanium oxide (this is
what I used in Acrylics) and Zinc oxide (Chinese white in watercolors) are
two that I know of. White glaze has whiting - Kaolin, tin oxides...Any clay
people out there to back me up on what makes white in glazes? LOTS of
science (and MATH) there folks.

Always try to tie in science when you do color theory....Try to team up when
science is doing color...I know that is hard to do.

White is tricky...
Kids would always argue with me and I felt in some ways they had a
point, at least semantically.
However, I just said two sentences.
White had no color and
Black had all colors...
However, some 'Weisenheimer' would always come up and tell me that all
colors mixed together became brown. or that absence of all colors meant
clear...oh, well..:)
all I could say, than you did not mix them perfectly..:)

Now....George is supposed to be "farmer, earthworker"...However our George

I do LIKE the sound of "One Nation Under John with Liberty and Justice for

"My Book"....You are of course welcome to tell me off list if you liked what
I had to say (grin). I know some of my posts will be "naughty" in an odd way
(so just lol or wonder "What's up with her?" One of my chapters is "I'm OK -
What's up with You?" so have a chuckle - I do).

Feed your Fish (students):

I love my country and I respect George - so don't arrest me.
Oh....I see George is a "walker"....well I am a rambler. I forgot his middle

Don't forget about reflected colors. Sometimes we see the color of what the object actually is. Other times we see the colors that are reflected off the object. In particular, translucent colors off insects.

I just did a lesson plan on this with 1st and 2nd grade I got off the crayola website.

I'll have to try this and see if it has any merit, but as far as explaining artistic white as lacking color,  you could show it with various forms of paper. Start with white paper, paint a swatch of red on it. Ask them if it has changed color. Then paint other colors of papers and show how the paper had changed the red into something different. Since it will, you could therefore come to the conclusion that white has no color in it.

(Marcia - I will get them to you)

Dear Art Educators,

Marcia Lavery posted a great question to Getty list... I would LOVE to see
your ideas listed.... Yes - they may appear in my e-Book but I will not take
credit for them....and my book is not for sale - so no need to worry - Share
freely!

My greatest motivators were when we did a real projects that real artists
would do. My kiddles loved to be treated as adults when it came to art
projects. Sculptures - ceramics - assemblages were all great motivators. My
motivators were things about them and their interests. I will look at my
lesson plans that I do have on the site and see if any of them were a bust -
other wise they were ALL great motivators. I had REAL artists (past and
present) to connect with each lesson. Our artists weren't all dead.

Do check out Bunki Kramer's site and Woody Duncan's site - both are/were
great motivators. Bunki's student work will just amaze you. She has high
expectations too. Her kiddles come to her with NO elementary art background.

Middle school kids are motivated when they have choices too (smile).
They don't all like doing the same thing the same way. Challenge them.

Here are Marcia's:

Some of my kid's motivators are:

Logos: a short project, but kids loved to make a symbol for themselves or
for their pretend company. We talked a little about graphic designers.

Animals: kids loved the animal painting project we did (choosing an animal
picture from a book or photo to paint). I showed them how to make it look
more realistic by using the fan brushes to create textured fur or feathers.
We also made animal clay sculptures in the style of Pre-Columbian animal
vessels.

CD covers: always a good sub project

Op-Art: the 8th graders loved the op-art designs of Bridget Riley and we
made our own.

Funky Fish paper mache puppets: the 8th graders made an imaginative, unusual
fish puppet sculptures. They especially liked using the paint markers to
make patterns and designs on their fish.

Toys and flowers: I just started a still life project with my 7th grade
class. I had a box of stuff they could pick from and drawing toys seemed to
be a hit! My brother had a bunch of old action figures and other toys that
the boys enjoyed drawing. Many of the girls picked the plastic flowers to
draw. We are going to start painting them with watercolor tomorrow.

I seem to be using the same ideas a lot though, what other themes/subjects
are motivating?

Note: Marcia - SPORTS motivates all middlers.

Subject: Some REAL THINKING! Art Education Topic

Greetings InKleined2Blue and All,

We did it! "We" got some real thinking - some real discussion.... finally!
It only took me one week to get something going.....and this time I wasn't
even trying. Politics AND religion is VERY much a part of ART.
You can not teach art well without bringing it in. How could you possibly
teach Renaissance art without mentioning either one? Egyptian art? You name
it..... remove those two and you take away the meaning in a lot of art.

What is offensive and to whom. Does the artist have the right to offend?
AND if you are offended then whose fault it that? YOU chose to be view the
work and YOU chose to be offended by it. Not too much shocks or surprises me
much in art. There is a lot of modern art I still don't understand or like -
but that is choice too.

Now....What started all of this thinking? My posts on religion that were
both in fun. Here is the response of my Noble Flying Fish (I will let her
jump in if she want to take credit for it.

From the "Noble Flying Fish":

The whole idea of offending seems to be a constant on any list I subscribe
to.

I'm not sure how we avoid offense or politics or religion.

Traditionally it has always been the artist's job to offend...Sometimes
subtly sometimes overtly.

Offense seems to me to be the driving force of contemporary art

If we ignore if we sanitize if we play into all the political
correctness where do we find the art?

All the lists I belong to incorporate people who think: People who explore
many options. Is it not part of our job as educators to explore the options?
...to give our students the capabilities to decipher the options and make
their own choices? And how do we incorporate their beliefs without
reducing options to all the stuff we are afraid to explore.

Passion is missing from art ed. I wish I could rewrite the standards to
include the student will be passionate. Art ed offers all the opportunity to
include all the ideas of religion, societies, politics and more.
If we avoid the controversies we avoid the art making

We are professionals. We can bring the controversy in a manner that allows
all students to express. Maybe through the allowing of the expression, the
student may find the avenues to question the systems. I guess I always
thought education was about questioning not going along
with [everything or "the flow" -- this part was missing]

I value any post that causes thinking and value that my education caused me
to think...and evaluate... and regard and disregard...
and hold precious what I think.

Don't take offense at any thinking. Teach being selective.

PK

PK - I am waiting to promote YOUR book!

If anyone is still reading - THIS IS part of "my book". PK just writes it
better - credit will be given....Remember - I am not selling "My
book"....and many folks have thoughts that are same as mine....Like minds.
Feel free to jump in InKleined2Blue - share this with your students.

Cheers!

P.S. Where is this coming from? My two posts offended one member of World
list - I choose not to offend that member again as that member is a very
important friend of mine. Friend do not deliberately offend friends.

P.P.S. My son is a real thinker and I am proud of it!

Dear Art Educators,

I answered this question on the tech ed list (off list)

This page has information on how to get permission to use copyrighted music in presentations.

Personally? If it is not for profit and not going to be published anywhere  - only to be used in your own classroom.... I would "just do it"....I won't tell the world that - just you folks. We already found out how tough it is to get permission from some artists to use images in PowerPoint. I wouldn't compound the problem. You just can't have your presentation shown on TV or a web site - or in a public performance without getting permission.

I started out as an Art Ed major in NC back in 1995, and now I am
considering returning to school to finish what I started.

I have an AAS and some certificates, but no bachelors, so it would
have to be undergrad.

THANKS for your help!

Greetings Sal!

Welcome to Art Education list. This is an important problem...Just how DO
you get it across that art is the most important subject? Find ways for them
to succeed....Make them do the work - even if it means on your time. Don't
let them fail. Other staff members will not like your success with kids with
the school sucks attitude - but so what? I loved my 5th graders when I had
them! 5th and 6th was my favorite age group. Work on those "naughty" kids
before they get up into 7th and 8th grade.

Art isn't important to that child because it isn't important to his/her
parents. You have to keep working him/her. Tell him/her how in art you
can express things that you can not express in any other class. Get the
kid/kids to realize how each an every object they touch has to do with
art in some way (design)...well just about....and what about cars!
Even the clothese that they wear. They could not go a day without art
no matter how hard they tried. ART is all around...beauty is all around.
Art isn't important to those kids because they feel they aren't any good
at it. Find something they CAN do and be proud of.

YOU have to make art important...but first talk to them to find out why it
isn't important in their eyes...Some idiot adult put that crazy notion in
their eyes. Find out who it was....Tell the kiddies what is wrong with that
way of thinking....Then do your spin.

BTW...my former middle school no longer has art offered as a class....
BUT many teacher integrated art iinto their curriculum
(partially thanks to my efforts over the years).

There are many quality art ed schools around the country. Do you want to
move?

Of course I am prejudice towards my own program (Northern AZ University,
Flagstaff), but there's Penn State, University of Texas, University of North
Texas, the Ohio State University, of FL at Gainesville to name a few.

If you are thinking of continuing later with grad work, it is usually better
to complete undergrad in one place and graduate in another.

Pam
