Brenda and all,

Folks, I have "talked" with Brenda a lot about her lesson.... I'll fill you all in on the details at some point....but today I have a lot of things to do (smile) - and I haven't gotten any of them done yet (giggle -- I've been "talking" all morning).

I like this lesson, Brenda. It is very doable. It would take a lot of Model Magic as written. Forms built up with regular modeling clay can easily be paper mached (and the modeling clay removed and reused) I would put a layer of regular paper mache on first before the powerdered - just for durablility/stability. Gosh Brenda, you almost have me wanting to work through a sample myself now (tee-hee). Making a sample is the best way to find out what works. I have many samples that never made it to the student project stages as is. I revised for the students.

I'd LOVE to see someone do this mask lesson with Greek theater - Comedy and Tragedy.... I just might have to share some ideas with the lists. I have lots of links for it.

For anyone else listening - Brenda is trying to do a 3-D lesson and not use firing clay. We really have to find a way for her to get a kiln (smile).

Brenda - you will never get me to agree that all of the kiddles doing King Tut portraits is a good idea (silly me). I liked variety - and individual creativity. I would have hated to see all of my kiddles doing King Tut - but that is just me. Only you know what will work with your kiddles.

Thanks for coming to this list. I answer this mail first.

Is there any reason why they couldn't do the Egyptian faces in modeling clay and then do the headdress in the powdered papier mache?
You're a dear,

Dear High School Art Teachers (and middle school),

Here is a "new" lesson plna from Ken on Incredible Art
Department (linked now):
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/high/Ken-cut.htm
Ken will have more work to share soon on his own site.

New additions to these lessons.
Pastels added (Andy DiConti's images too):
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/high/ken-water.htm
Contour drawings:
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/high/kenshading.htm
Double Portrait Weave drawing:
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/high/kenweave.htm

Note: I put links to student work on the lesson plans
- Don't expect their work to remain online forever.
Just notify me if you find a broken link when you use
a plan. I don't go back and check those.

Folks (another ramble for today), I have one more
lesson to share from Ken - His montage endangered
species (because I found lots of links to put on it)
then I am done putting Ken's lessons on Incredible Art
Department for a while. Ken, if you see this, I do
have another montage lesson plan from you that I can
tweak. When I get it done, I'll have you read it (I
want to finish the Story tellers, first). Ken loves to
share his ideas and so do I. I just don't see many
returning the favor by submitting lesson plans to the
site. Ken knows when I started these updates - and now
I finally have then done. It takes me lots of time to
get these on the site. I love doing it. But the
sharing has to continue (and folks need to credit Ken
for his ideas). I have only been able to give Ken a
few lessons in return (he doesn't mind - but I do). I
am encouraging Ken to put future plans on CD and sell
them - he could make a bundle (and I'll help promote
his CD)! He can start by saving all of the ones I have
on IAD - with the Internet resources - then add
additional student samples. I have even had a text
book company contact me about Ken's plans, too.(Dan
Cherney - if you see this - Ken Schwab is a lot like
you - keep his email address, too).

Enjoy this fine work! Ken's new site to come soon.

Dear Art Educators,

Clay animation has come up on Getty list again - so I
thought I would repost this lesson I found on a site
the Sara sent to me. This is from a July post. (Sorry,
I didn't save any of the current discussion. Renee
Berg is the "pro"
http://rb043.k12.sd.us/art_tech_8th.htm)

Storytelling through Clay Animation (20 page unit
plan):
http://seed.mainecenter.org/application/files/packets/PDF335.pdf

Sara Sent me this SEED site - so I explored it
http://seed.mainecenter.org/index.cfm?section=1

SEED Developer Application
Find lessons by grade level and content area.
http://seed.mainecenter.org/application/resources.cfm

Here are just a few of the middle school lesson plans
on the site. They are very thorough lessons which
might spark an idea. (I didn't read through the
entire lessons - I know I personally would probably do
them differently)

Teaching Local Culture and Heritage
(interdisciplinary)
http://seed.mainecenter.org/application/files/packets/PDF276.pdf
I took a class called "Backyard History" which was
very interesting to me and shared a little bit of it
when I did my Heroes unit with 8th grade (but
that is a long story). If we want kids to learn history
- we should give them some history that will mean
something to them. Local history is a good starting
point.

Constructing a Geometric Quilt Design:

Math Arts:
http://seed.mainecenter.org/application/files/packets/PDF332.pdf

This is linked on IAD Lesson Plans page.
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/links/artgames.html

Sara and all - continue to share sites you value and
will use. I link most of them up on IAD. I always look
at them (Sara I linked up Art and Soul Book Kits, too,
on Art Stores).
I've spent hours today doing link updates...Sometime
when you are bored, you can browse the Art Stuff pages
(smile).
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/links/artstuff.html
Honestly, folks before I took over Incredible Art
Department I only used IAD link pages one time. I am
glad they are there to make non-art teacher users of
the site happy. I have "met" a lot of interesting
artists through those links pages.

Subject: Lesson Plans for Incredible Art Department
judydeckeriad
Send Email Send Email

Dear Art Educators,

Since you are coming into a time when you may have a
few days off and will have time to think - and relax -
I thought this would be a good time to give my pitch
for new lesson plans for Incredible Art Department.

Drawing and Perspective are still the top searches for
Incredible Art Department. I have to assume they are
looking for lesson plans. I am all ears for any lesson
plans that you already have ON FILE (meaning - don't
write something up just for the site). I want lessons
that you are excited about - that have a different
twist - have clear objectives. It doesn't matter if
the idea came from another list member (you will
credit them in the writing of the plan) - YOU will be
credited with submitting it. It is funny - but I have
even had folks not want to submit a plan for an idea
that I gave them. Hey - that is why I give out ideas -
I WANT the plans. Sure I can write them myself. I have
hundreds of ideas in folder I could write up into
lesson plans (but I hate writing up lesson plans just
as much as you do...Hmmm... I still have that Story
tellers to finish).

Lesson plans is what folks want most who use
Incredible Art Department - so that is always my
number one goal. I am also interested in how you
tweaked a lesson you found on IAD - How you did it
"your way". I like showing variety on the lesson
plans, too. (Mike Sacco - if you see this - I will
show your Georgia O'Keeffe pastels if you submit how
you did it with your kiddles - I shared Ken's and
Andy's pastels yesterday).

One last thing.... If I ask you for a lesson plan -
think of it as a form of flattery - not nagging
(please). I am not a nagger - nor am I a pest. I am
just doing my job (smile).

Terrific Tuesday!

Dear Art Educators,

Sandy Bacon posted this to Getty list:
http://www.mrpicassohead.com/

The play feature worked great for me. I couldn't get
the gallery to load. Be sure to try the scaling
feature too to get a larger Picasso head. I had fun
combining two face shapes, too -- and changing the
colors....My oh my where does the time go (smile)?

Might be fun for your kiddles to do color planning for
their Cut paper Collage Picasso Portraits - or Picasso
paintings this way. No mess (ha-ha). No wasted paint
or paper. Ken Schwab is even going to let his Art 3
students play with it. Have some FUN!

I have added a link to the following pages:

http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/middle/for-kids.htm

Thanks Sandy (if you see this - are you still on

right away now.

Dear Art Educators,

Alice and I are pretending we don't know any better
here (just don't tell on us -- smile).

Alice has shared with me her images of students as
American Gothic.
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/Files/gothic.htm

Legally, I can not publish them to the site....so they
are just in the File for Sharing temporarily - Only
you folks know they are there. (I won't even tell you
Alice's last name until I have permission for these
kiddles -- I am just being cautious here).
Notice how they duplicated the clothes from the
painting. Alice - did you make the costumes? Folks, if
you intend to do this from year to year, I think it is
well worth the effort.

Thanks Alice for sharing (and for being willing to
take a "risk" -- even for a short time. I will only
have them on the site for the rest of this week to
allow all to read their mail).

Dear Art Educators,

Connie Ferguson has come back to Getty list just in
time to get her Claymation unit out to all of you who
are tackling that right now.
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/middle/Clay-Connie.htm

(Connie, I have done some of the "thanking" for you.
Big smiles to you Renee if you see this)

You will also find a link to Jim McNeill's PowerPoint
animation on this lesson (at bottom). For the
animation to work, you need to save it to file. If
anyone does an animation unit with your kiddles using
PowerPoint, I would like to put your lesson plan on
IAD.

Folks, obviously Connie spent a LONG time on this plan
and she is very happy to share her efforts. Included
are student handouts and assessment tools. It took me
more than two hours to get it all re-formatted and put
on the site for you (adding my "Judy-isms" along the
way). Writing plans for the site is no "minute task"
for anyone. We are happy to help you all in any way we
can.

Soon, I will have a video clip -- or images - to share
with it. Connie - no rush on those. If you can't find
my "Judy-isms", I'll point them out to you.

Enjoy this plan - hope it helps you all.

I have kept my ears and eyes open for fiber lessons

silk painting with 5th graders. The results will "wow

artist samples I sent to her.

Do click to see the larger images.

You can see that I have this started as a lesson plan
-- that will be "to come" (how about over the summer,
Denise? I want to add your applique quilt too).

My apologies to you for not getting this out sooner
today....dental appointment (yuck!)

Have a Wonderful Wednesday!

P.S. Folks, I can easily share project ideas this way
for you. Ones that I know will be a hit, we can
develop the lesson plan later.

Dear Art Educators,

Coloring skills - and value shading - was a recent
thread on Getty list. Jan Hillmer had the perfect
lesson plan to go along with the thread (more to come
on that - I have lots of "words of wisdom" to add to
this plan -- in time -- in time - but first the lesson
plan).

Value Shading -Animals in art:
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/elem/Jan-value.htm

The fish is the only one that has a larger image at
top. Leopard is featured throughout lesson (click on
the links) because I accidentally forgot him when I
was adding images at the top -- he is a good one - you
will see why. Kids can teach you a lot about how to
teach art. See what lessons Jan's kids can teach you
(smile). I just happen to think Jan is a pretty
wonderful art teacher! More ideas to come soon from
Jan soon (I have a neat "Mondrian" image -I just have
to find it).

Hope you enjoy this lesson as much as I did. It was a
nice present today. I love it when Christmas comes
early.

Hi, Judy,
I've been doing silk paintings with 8th graders for years. Do I have
pictures to show you?No.
I'll have to figure out how to turn them into a lesson that I can share.
We are leaving for Israel for the holidays and I'm up to my ears in work
now.
I'm just learning the value of capturing things in my new digital camera.
Now I have to get the computer teacher to help me set up a web page. It is
really something among many things that I am learning from you.
My class is doing the warm color/cool color paintings now and it's a big
success. I have a class full of rambunctious boys and they are loving it.
Thanks to all of you. I am grateful.

Dear Art Educators,

This is a re-post for Jackie Brewer. She wanted to
know about Ruth's files -- that got the ball rolling
on P's and E's Assessment tools.

Here is Ruth's test link (at the top of this file)
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/Files/Ruth.htm
(I gave her some sample revisions - in looking at them
today, I may word them differently now - but you get
the idea) Jackie, Ruth's files are part of her test -
she put them online for me. (Other folks offered
feedback for Ruth too off list -- that was the
intention)

Now - here is what followed - my sample tests:
Mulitple Choice
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/Files/test.htm
True False
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/Files/test1.htm
Short Answer (homework/take home test)
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/Files/test2.htm
25 point matching (this was done for Ruth)
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/Files/test3.htm
Student Elements Worksheet (revised from Woody)
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/Files/test4.htm
Student Principles Worksheet (revised from Woody)
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/Files/test5.htm
Woody - if you see this - when I put the links page on
IAD for all of this, I'll link to your site.

Now - NONE of what I did is "copyrighted" as such - it
is here for you to adapt and edit. I would just
appreciate credit it you put my files on your sites.

I would like feedback on what tests worked for you and
why.....but I won't put a key online for you for my
tests (someone did ask for one). You are on your own
for that.

And the "motherload" - Joe's Elements in html so
everyone can read them
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/Files/elements.htm

And this list of "must have" (suggested) art prints
(only those available through Shorewood and Art
Image):
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/Files/artists.htm

What do I intend to do with this list? Well....when I
feel like it, I will write a Principles of Design
handout (hopefully as nice as Joe's) - THEN make a
test using the images.....unless someone else beats me
to it (smile).

Warning! Warning! to all who use files from IAD and my
site. I am known to make mistakes - often many at one
time (gasp!) - DO proof your files before turning them
in to your administrators or handing out to kids (that
is YOUR job). I never claimed to be good at typing
(Kindly - though if you do notice a boo-boo - tell me
off list - Jdecker@... - there is no need
telling everyone in the world I can't type - I just
did that for you)
I gave my kiddles bonus points when they found my
boo-boos. I had my hubby read my college work before I
turned it in. I miss mistakes - that is what I do very
well.

Cheers!

Judith

P.S. Sorry Jackie I am so late getting back with you
on this. It just slipped my mind. Since someone asked
me for a test key - I thought it would be a good time
to repost now - all in one email for everyone.

Thanks to everyone who sent suggestions for fingerpainting lessons. I ended
up taping freezer paper to the tables and putting the paint on that, and
then monoprinting when they were finished. I had this huge box of freezer
paper I'd purchased last year about this time from a large grocery store...
I'm not sure it's available all year round (except maybe Sam's), but this
was a cost-effective way of getting lots. When the kinders were done, they
peeled off the tape, folded up the paper and threw it away. The paint was
put on the plastic side of the paper, and withstood the entire hour of
enthusiastic painting with hands and tools. I'm not going to have them make
anything out of the paper this time, but have kept a list of all the ideas
you sent for the next session. Thanks!

Dear Art Educators,

It is no wonder our little kiddles get confused.
Publishers can not agree on the Elements and
Principles of design. I've been "talking" with Ken
Schwab tonight - and he teaches them differently than
what I posted (mine agree with Davis Publication and
the Gerald Brommer videos). I did find different vocab
files I had saved. Wasn't able to find the Word file
from Ken -- but will put his list post on the site
soon. By the way, Ken's book (that he is writing with
his friend Bob) will be published in Fall 2004.

I deliberately left Proportion off my handout (Test5)
- you can revise that by removing one of the balance
and putting proportion in its place.

I found an interesting file from a list member that
has "psychic line" on it. Does anyone remember sharing
that one (sometime March 2002)? It is Word file with
the heading
The Vocabulary of Art
"The Visual Elements"
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/Files/vocab.htm
I noticed on my machine that the numbering is all off
(probably just a glitch with Word)- but it shouldn't
be too hard for you to tweak if you want to revise it.
If anyone remembers sharing the file with psychic line
- let me know so I know who to credit. I won't leave
it on the site without the author - but will share it
for a couple of days. Look at it now - don't publish
it on your sites please. This vocabulary does list
specific examples for the students to view.

I do have a Principles file to share - soon...it is
copied/revised from the Internet - so will only be on
for a short time too.

Getty Folks....the archives on Getty are now almost up
to date. I am so glad all of these files these last
several months were not offered to send as attachments
- folks tend to find those posts and ask for the files
to be sent to them (weeks and months later -- even
years later). Now when they find the posts - they'll
just find broken links when the files have been
removed. Now that Getty is archiving the posts on the
site again we ALL need to be more careful what we
write (me included! I sure had a big mouth last month
- and it is on the Getty site now - shame on me! It
does come up in a Google search too- but you have to
enter artsednet along with it).

More on P's and E's ....later.

Hi All:
I just wanted to let you know how the Egyptian units turned out.

We watched the Prince of Egypt.
First we all drew King Tut fishing.  Cut this out and traced it onto multicolored or gold or silver scratchboard.
Then scratched away all the sky behind leaving a silhouette.  I saw this somewhere so I thank whoever did it first.  Then the kids wrote their names in hieroglyphics.

Now to 3D:

My first idea came from Crayola's
Mystery Behind Tut's Mask
http://crayola.com/educators/lessons/display.cfm?id=445

I gave my 5/6th graders a choice (thanks to Judy's urging for creativity,
it was scary cuz there's 100 kids!) of doing King Tut in Model Magic clay or carving the Sphinx out of Styrofoam floral block.
Not too many picked the clay much to my relief. ($$$$)
We just took a ball of clay (4 oz) and divided it into two.
One ball was used and we formed a face and pinched out or added a nose, and lips.
Then the other ball became a snake that was rolled out really long then flattened for headdress.
Then the cobra on the headdress was added and scratching tools made details.
They will paint them next week.

The 4"x8" floral Styrofoam became a sphinx.
I found a good site yesterday that supported my idea of doing this but I had already planned it.

http://www.geocities.com/sseagraves/ancientegyptlessonplans.htm

We made a drawing of the side of the sphinx to scale then cut it out.
We traced it to each side of the block.  (Two girls forgot to flop it, I guess they didn't get it that the head had to match on both ends...picasso like, I guess. he he)
Then trace the top and bottom and small sides.
Then cut away with plastic knives.
We will spray these with fleck spray when we're done.  Or we may gesso them and put a kind of rock stain on it.

If anyone has any questions on this, the kids have really loved it!
Thank you for all who responded!

Dear Art Educators,

Will third time be the charm? I have written this
message three times and can't get Yahoo to send it...
The first time I spent an hour writing the "perfect
post"....Second time I spent less time....Maybe now if
I spent even less time it will send?

Getty has updated the archives through November 2003:
http://www.getty.edu/artsednet/Talk/index.html

For those looking for Christmas ideas - go to November
2003. Also try a Google search - include artsednet
with your key words to see what folks have said in the
past (that goes for all art ed topics). Use the Getty
archives - that it what they are there for.

My message for Christmas and Christmas ideas for now
comes from my brother, Steve Richer (warning- mentions

Dear Art Educators,

FINALLY - I have the start of the Holiday Gift ideas
page on Incredible Art Department:
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/elem/Christmas.htm
More ideas for this page to come. Many are available
already in the Getty ArtsEdNet Archives for November
2003.

Linda Woods - remember our Holiday Ornaments ideas
from months ago (when we were helping Liz)? Your
angels? I'll be hunting for those and will get those
posted, too. Today, I am moving on to other things for
a while. The Christmas Ideas is linked from Elementary
Plans....Smile folks - you can see I'm half way to
Mother's Day already (ha-ha).
If the ornaments interest you - just keep checking
back...and wondering "Is she done yet? Is she done
yet?"

Enjoy - and DO continue to post holiday ideas you have
and I will continue to add them. I do value your time.

Judith Decker

P.S. for Ann Heimeman - I know you read what I post
--How do you like my twist to your Mother's Day gift

always know that there is at least one person who
reads what I have to say - Ann - hats off to you.
Folks, this is how special Ann Heineman is to me - One

Dear Art Educators,

Ken and I got to "talking" last night about the
different terms we use for teaching the elements and
principles of design - and that got me scurrying
through my files - Boy do I sure have a lot of good
stuff from Getty list saved!

Marvin spent a very long time on an excellent reply to
me - it was just too good for my eyes only. I have
added it to a file in the Files for Sharing folder.
Also added are the definitions Ken uses.
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/Files/elements2.htm

I can not grant any of you permission to copy and use
these files in anyway.

You will also find the test, worksheets and handouts

link this to the site.

Hope this helps - this does come up every year on

Getty folks - this was in response to a post for

Middle school teachers especially - look this over and
see how it may help you with your students. Save it -
Re-write for your needs - Format to fit one page

This file will remain on the site for a short time.

Dear Art Educators,

Some days you got to "SCREAM" - jump up and down for
joy -- and do some cartwheels too! (silly me).

Dan Cherney sent me this incredible CNN article that
just SCREAMS interdisciplinary.
Why the sky was red in Munch's 'The Scream'
http://www.cnn.com/2003/TECH/space/12/10/scream.munch.reut/index.html

Science:
Astronomy, volcanoes, weather (I know this is all
middle school curriculum) - Physics for the older kids

Geography:
Norway - Indonesia (island of Krakatoa) -
topographical maps - etc.

Social Studies:
The people of Norway (form 1800's and today) and the
people of Indonesia (World religions/beliefs IS a part
of social studies curriculum - help those teachers do
their jobs. Read your county curriculum guides to be
sure. I know I am right for all of Ohio - Your states
may be different)

Math:
The researchers determined the vantage point of where
Munch must have been standing. I'm too "stupid" today
to figure that out - but your math people might be
intrigued. Tie in distance - physics (there is math in
physics)- there's more but let the math people help.

ART:
Lots and lots and lots you can do....I have too many
ideas to list. We will start with parody.

GOOD NEWS! Shorewood now had The Scream! (phone
1-800-494-3824 today to get your copy -- only $8.00)

Folks - I no longer get the Times - or any on-line
news letter - When you find this kind of stuff that
everyone should know about DO send it to me. I will
jump through the hoops to get it on the site. I have
all sorts of "connections" saved on my computer from
the New York Times. Maybe I should re-subscribe.

Thanks Dan for all the fun your message gave me today.
Keep "gifting" me good stuff.

Judith

Hint: Save the article to file now - do the research
over the summer to make your unit really wonderful!
Many of you like to do the Scream in the Fall (around
Halloween). Check with core to see when their units
fall - it is easier to mesh with them - than to make
them mesh with you (smile).

Subject: Linda's "12 step" Watercolor (high school)
judydeckeriad
Send Email Send Email

Hi Linda --and all...It isn't that folks "re-invent
the wheel" - It is just that some take time to publish
the ideas. I will be publishing your ideas to
IAD....soon (smile). The "computer gods" were smiling
on me. I was able to open your file for the first
time. (no need for you to resend to anyone)

Here is Linda's Getty post:

Hi Everyone-attached (copied below) is an
"exploration" lesson I do with watercolor techniques.
I have the kids choose an idea or theme, then execute
it the twelve ways given. It becomes a bit quilt-like
and gives the kids an
opportunity to see how various techniques can affect
the same subject. Later I assign them a landscape
using at least 5 of the techniques. We also do some
mixed media work with colored pencils and some tissue
paper, watercolor collage.

EXPERIMENTING WITH WATER MEDIA

Divide your sheet of paper into 12 equal blocks(if
using one sheet) with a light pencil line.
Do one experiment in each block. (This will require 2
half-sheets or one full sheet of
watercolor paper.)

1. Use a watercolor wash to lay down some areas of
color. While it is still wet, go into the
wash with a watercolor or aquasketch pencil.

2. Draw with charcoal. Using clean water and a brush,
go into the charcoal and blend to
make value changes.

3. Use a regular pencil or graphite stick to add lines
to a watercolor wash you have
already laid down.

4. Use bright colors of crayons and/or oil pastels.
Overlap some colors. Paint over and
into your drawing with watercolor wash. Use something
pointed and scrape back into the
waxy surface for another effect.

5. Use Prismacolor and transparent and opaque paint.
The pencil can add detail and
texture. The opaque paint will give heavier coverage
and darker values.

6. Wet the block with clean water. Use acrylic matte
medium that has been diluted to a
50:50 solution. Paint the block with the solution.
Begin layering pieces of tissue paper,
rice paper, etc. Mix some watercolor paint and add a
bit of metallic pigment. Paint over
the layers of paper. Later, you can add oil pastel,
Prismacolor, etc. for lines and shape
definition.

7. Wet the block. Incise your paper with a sharp tool.
Add a watercolor wash.

8. Lay on a layered wash. While still wet, crumple a
piece of plastic wrap and lay it on the
wash. Do NOT disturb until dry.

9. Lay on a layered wash of deep colors. Sprinkle salt
onto the wash. Do NOT disturb
until dry.

10. Lay on a layered wash of deep colors. Sprinkle
rocks or pebbles onto it. Do NOT
disturb until dry.

11. Lay on a layered wash of deep colors. Use a straw
to drop a few drops of alcohol into
it.

12. Paint some deep colors. Use the edge of a credit
card or hard plastic to scrape and
push the paint away.

share that might spark some ideas for your students.
Team up with science.
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/high/images/ken-bones.jpg

This was done with tempera paint - but can be adapted
for watercolor (maybe even adding salt and plastic
wrap technique)- or acrylics (playing with textures
too)

The idea is on this lesson plan:
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/high/kenshading.htm

Ken posted "Dem Bones" to Getty ArtsEdNet a while ago
and was happy to supply this image for the site.

I will gladly add new high school images to the site.
Send them my way. Lesson plans remain on the site.
Ideas in Files for Sharing do not remain forever. Just
last night I deleted a number of files that are not
linked up. All you folks have to do is ask me for them
if you need them (jdecker@...). IAD is getting
huge. I need to put on the site what is needed by most
teachers. Lesson plans are number one priority -
always. List members do want images to go with lesson
plans. Again - there is NO set form. Lesson plans are
to be submitted in a form that YOU will use.

Thanks to all who have contributed - I enjoy my

(more to come from me, too, Cathy)

Dear Art Education members,

I am coming to you for advice for Cathy (from Hawaii) since you give the
best (Ken and/or Michael Gerrish - hope you are out there). She needs help
soon (before next week). If you have time, read on. I will include my reply
to her so you don't have to repeat what I said. (Michael - I'm looking for
your message sent to the other request - I did save that. I'm also sending
Cathy the Bridge grade form to adapt) Thanks in advance -
reply to Cathy Kerch ckerch@... (go ahead and cc to me, too -
I'll save your words of wisdom).

From Cathy,

Here is my situation. You know this is my first year teaching art so
last quarter when I did grades for my students I didn't really use any
weights and pretty much was very easy on the grading. Basically if they did
the work they got a 100. Well, what I didn't know is that 100 on our new
grading system is an A+, so this quarter when I did the grading I put
in weights for project, participation, tests, and skills. This changed a
lot of my students grades from A+ to B or C... which after much prayer I
truly feel reflects their accurate grade. Now, the problem. I have several
kids who have told me that their parents are upset that they went from an A+
to a B or C. I have not had any phone calls so far from parents expressing
this issue so I'm not sure if the kid is making it up.

Today, the V.P. came to me and said that one of my students, an
ADHD/ADD kid would like me to join a parent/teacher conference next week.
The parent wants to know why her son is not doing well in all his classes
and particularly wants to know how her son went from an A+ to C+ in Art.
This kid sits at his desk in a total haze. Sometimes I'm not sure he is
really all there and when given instructions he just looks at me like a
blank slate. This whole week he has buried himself in a book and hasn't
done any work in Art. No matter how much I try to reach him he just seems
too overly medicated to respond and this is the same behavior he exhibits in
his other
classes so I'm not alone in my impression of him.

What worries me is the comment that
parent made to the VP which is that she feels that I am not doing all that I
can for her son and I should be more understanding and work with him
because Art is a rehabilitational exercise for learning disabled students.
What scares me about this comment is that I am not a special ed teacher nor
am I qualified to handle kids who are learning disabled. The VP knows this
and told me not to worry but I can't help but feel that maybe I'm failing
this child and I don't know what else I can do in Art to help him if he is
not going to do any work. I've tried prompting
him and giving him extra time on projects and my last test I added pictures
with large words and let the students use their notes to take the test and
he stilled failed. I'm at a loss and through my prayers I'm being led
back to you for advice. So, when you have a moment can you please send me
some wise words to help me during my parent/teacher conference next week.

My reply (just FYI - I may be off base)

OK - first my short answer. You are NOW doing
everything right. You can not undo what you did first
term. That was mistake (and it is a good thing you are
admitting that -- and let the parents know you made a
mistake - we ALL make mistakes -- and you will not go
back in an lower those first term grades - those were
a "gift"). A+ has to be earned (kids will stop working
hard if all they have to do is "do it" for the grade
-- you found that out the hard way). The best way for
you to handle it is to start doing more self
assessments. Those can be your best ammunition.

Maybe design some kind of form to use NOW with
students who are not working -- and have them assess
their work each week. Kids won't want to keep on doing
that so eventually, they will work.

On the test? Give this kid a chance to do it orally -
either with you - or the classroom teacher. If he
still fails - he fails it - plain and simple. You have
done all you can do.

This is my short answer for now....Let me think more
on this....REMIND me if you still need more help.
Hope this does help you some now.

Love ya!

Judy

P.S. I can help design the form - but will need your
classroom rules -- and rules that are in your student
handbook in order to do it. Make sure you let the
parents know how much they are helping you, too
(smile). I think it is a GOOD thing to let parents
know that you don't know everything there is to know.
We are constantly learning - THAT is what makes us
good teachers. Lifelong learning!

Here is my situation. You know this is my first year
teaching art so last quarter when I did grades for my
students I didn't really use any weights and pretty
much was very easy on the grading. Basically if they
did the work they got a 100. Well, what I didn't know
is that 100 on our new grading system is an A+, so
this quarter when I did the grading I put in weights
for project, participation, tests, and skills. This
changed a lot of my students grades from A+ to B or
C... which after much prayer I
truly feel reflects their accurate grade. Now, the
problem. I have several kids who have told me that
their parents are upset that they went from an A+
to a B or C. I have not had any phone calls so far
from parents expressing this issue so I'm not sure if
the kid is making it up.

Today, the V.P. came to me and said that one of my
students, an ADHD/ADD kid would like me to join a
parent/teacher conference next week.
The parent wants to know why her son is not doing well
in all his classes and particularly wants to know how
her son went from an A+ to C+ in Art.
This kid sits at his desk in a total haze. Sometimes
I'm not sure he is really all there and when given
instructions he just looks at me like a
blank slate. This whole week he has buried himself in
a book and hasn't done any work in Art. No matter how
much I try to reach him he just seems too overly
medicated to respond and this is the same behavior he
exhibits in his other classes so I'm not alone in my
impression of him.

What worries me is the comment that parent made to the
VP which is that she feels that I am not doing all
that I can for her son and I should be more
understanding and work with him because Art is a
rehabilitational exercise for learning disabled
students. What scares me about this comment is that I
am not a special ed teacher nor am I qualified to
handle kids who are learning disabled. The VP knows
this and told me not to worry but I can't help but
feel that maybe I'm failing this child and I don't
know what else I can do in Art to help him if he is
not going to do any work. I've tried prompting
him and giving him extra time on projects and my last
test I added pictures with large words and let the
students use their notes to take the test and
he stilled failed. I'm at a loss and through my
prayers I'm being led back to you for advice. So,
when you have a moment can you please send me
some wise words to help me during my parent/teacher
conference next week.

For Cathy,
I agree that you can' t go back and need to explain to the parents the
mistake you made.If it makes you feel better, I did about the same
thing, but when I changed send a note home to the parents with the
report card.

That's a good way to grade, I also included points for bringing
requested materials to school ,but only gave pass or fail tests and very
little of them.
Skills, that is iffy for I never graded 'talent'..
For me, that came under participation.
For instance :
Every fall, I would take the kids outside with watercolors to give me 10
different greens they would see on the trees.
That requires no talent.
However, some kids just watered down their greens and than 'presto' had
10greens, without paying much attention to the trees and the real colors
that one could see.
The kids that mixed their colors, got full value points, the kids that
just watered down their green watercolor box green got less value.
Overall, I was very careful to choose projects that did not require
drawing talent.
For the few kids that I would have that had good talent, I gave them
extra challenges for extra value points.
Because I taught at a Charterschool, I often had a mix of very talented
kids in class who enjoyed the advancement I gave them to explore in
special projects, but also many ADD kids who just chose Art as an easy
class.
Those I graded on participation, project and effort, as they could do
it. Often it was an individual thing.
Kids who scored well on just those 3 would get an 'A'
Kids who did extra projects could get an 'A +'
Overall, I graded easy, for it is my personal opinion that Art should
be enjoyable, not depend on talent ( especially drawing talent) and chose
projects that kids could be successful with.
It is important that the students fully understand how you
grade.Parents. too, something I always explained at our open house when
parents came to my classroom.
Good luck !! You will get the hang of it.

Pet angels - (or people)
You need a photo of the head of a dog or cat or person, or whatever,
that can fit inside a sprayed gold or silver bottlecap. We used
copper, brass, and aluminum sheet, colored twisteez wire, and those
metallic/translucent ropes that are sold by the yard and can be
untwisted (they were the wings) THe angels' dresses were cut from metal
sheeting that is thick enough to repousse but thin enough to cut with
scissors. We sometimes cut holes in them with paper punches and used
colored and metallic bits of wire to weave through the holes, "sew"
metal together, and so on. We also used sequins to decorate the angels
dresses.
