I am looking for someone to go through some art projects for me and label them as one or any of the following:

line
shape
value
color
space
texture pattern

I will be happy to pay that person for their time.

Anyone out there interested?
it might not happen until after Christmas, late in January probably.

Hi,MaryAnn,
I'll be happy to look through your projects and designate them according to the art elements you've chosen. I've read some of your books and spend alot of time thinking of art and art projects. I'm also probably less busy than some folks as I'm recovering from surgery and am only working p/t.

Well... I think I made this easy for folks who didn't
want to open my message to read it....

So I will add something more for those of you who did
open it.

From time to time on all lists - some one will make a
post in reply to a digest. Please change the subject
line to something that matches your post. And with any
post - if your message has nothing to do with the
orignal post - change the subject, line, too.

ALSO - if your reply is just for one person, please
simply copy that person's email address in the To
line. That will make checking mail easier for
everyone.

I am without my computer now - so am not reading all
posts - so please don't think me rude if I do not
reply to a note hidden for me personally in one of
your posts. I am managing my time better by reading
only subject lines - and threads that interest me.
Hope that doesn't upset anyone out there (smile). Lord
knows you don't read all of my posts (ha-ha).

Now for anyone STILL reading my dribble... Getty list
is looking for cheap Christmas ornament ideas (ones
that aren't too Christmassy).

This is what has been posted so far:

Mexican foil tooled ornamnets (animals ans such).
Origami
Clay
hot glue-beaded pins - snowflakes

Share any additional ideas you have -- but change the
subject line to Ornaments when you reply.

Enjoy your weekend.... I am enjoying my break
(computer is on the fritz). I just hope I haven't lost
my hard drive. Computer is in the shop right now. All
we know now is what the problem is not. I have over
$300.00 in parts to return to one computer store and
they better take it back - it was their Power supply
that didn't work - well enough of that I could vent on
and on. Matt did get the Internet to work on the lap
top so now I can talk from home.

Cheers!

Judith

Subject: Class critique - a success story
judydeckeriad
Send Email Send Email

Dear middle/high school teachers,

I've been meaning to share this Getty post with you on
class critique. (Patty - it's yours so just delete)
Peer evaluation can be so helpful.

From Patty Knott:

It is my habit to have "mid-point" critiques with all
my lessons. I think if the class brainstorms ideas it
is much more valuable than just me guiding individual
progress.

My advanced class has been working on advertisements.
They had open choice as to product and technique -
some are using the computers, some are making videos,
some traditional graphic techniques. We stopped today

to evaluate progress to date and ask questions as to
"is it eye catching? what are the compositional
weaknesses? what could be more effective?"

I was so pleased today for every plan displayed there
was so much discussion (we didn't get done, more to
do tomorrow) The suggestions were incredible, even for
the weakest plans. The kids were taking notes from
what everyone was saying and best of all, nobody felt
offended if their piece was criticized.

My point is kids helping kids through the process is a
good thing and kids listen to other kids (I barely
said anything today) They won't be trying to please me
now, they will please their peers.

I admitted to them today that I find it hard to
understand some of what they are attracted to. I
admitted that what was maybe standard for me may
not be for them (I'm an old fogie) and I admitted that
if they would give me that I know something about what
works visually I would let them have some of the
querky things that make me a little uncomfortable.
We are collaborating and they don't think I'm such an
old fogie.

Let go of some of your stuff and embrace some of
theirs.

Patty

Patty has shared a lot of neat things with me about
her classes. Even the "naughty boys" like her class.
One thing that does make Patty so successful is that
she gives kids choices. She has the big ideas - the
main objectives as is expected - but there is always
room for students to go in their own direction. I am
hoping to have some ideas from Patty to post in the
future -- just some thought starters (not complete
plans -- just the idea and some of the student
interpretations). I know some of you are developing
your own philosophies and style of teaching right now
and will learn from what Patty does. Patty may be an
old fogie -- but she has not forgotten what it is like
to be a kid. She sure knows kids.

Cheers!

Judy

P.S for Patty if you decided to read -- I'm adding
this to the Ad Agency lesson plan on IAD (when I get
my machine back)- someone else might come across it
that way. BTW - I am "talking" from home now... Matt
got the Internet to work on the lap top for us.

I would like to finish my page on Halloween - Days of

blurb. I would like to have a picture too if possible.

I thought now would be a better time to ask since they
are fresh in your mind right now.

Michal Austin has her Days of the Dead Amate style
skeletons on her site.

Any one else have work on your site?

Michal posted quite a few new projects - New ones are
lised at the bottom of each grade level list.
DO check out these middle school self portraits too:

Dear Friends in art education.

I don't have much time online today - hubby needs his
machine back (mine is in the shop).... I just wanted
to pound out this quick post to you. I buried this
request in a post yesterday that few will see...

Getty list is looking for quick and easy ornament
ideas - that are also CHEAP. Here is the run down
already.

clay
origami
hot glue/beaded pins snowflakes
foil tooled (can use pie plate and such - not cost!)

Cinnamon applesause dough was also mentioned - but any
of you who have purchased cinnamon know that is not
cheap. I'd sure hate to buy enough cinnamon for making
200.

What I will do is compile all suggestions and put on
the site as Holiday ideas. You can bet folks will
search IAD for Chistmas projects. These ideas could be
set up as learning centers for kids who are finished
with their real art projects. DO NOT stop your
curriculum to do something for Christmas. Make
whatever you do be meaningful - have a lesson to be
learned.

Cheers,

Judy

I had excellent mentors, my jr. high and high school art teachers

What kind of education and training do you have?
BA in Visual Arts Education from Kansas University, Lawrence
80-100 grad hours

What are your activities and responsibilities on the job?
Taught 6-7-8 grade art in an inner city middle school for 26 years

What do you like best about your job?
Opportunity to learn from my students as they tackled problems

Least?
Paperwork, meetings, changing ideas every month about how we should teach

How much influence do you have over decisions that affect you?
I did what I thought was best for the kids and best to build a program

What are the positive and negative aspects of working in this field?
Positive: the energy generated by the students
Negative: lack of adequate pay (I took a 50% cut to teach)

What skills, education and experience are required?
A solid foundation in your subject area
A love for children and learning
A Passion for what you are doing

Is there any specific advice you would give to a person entering this
field?

Reflect on the three things I mentioned above

Where do you expect to go from here?

Now that I'm retired I plan to help out in some way doing workshops and such
but mostly I plan to move to New Mexico and improve my painting

Can you suggest anyone else whom I could contact for additional

I would also suggest that you post this survey on

A good survey with well thought out questions, Woody in KC

(Thanks for this artist, RB)

Dear Art Educators,

When I get my machine back, I will add David Boxley to
the Incredible Artists page:
http://www.davidboxley.com/default.asp
- an internationally recognized Northwest Coast Native
artist and culture bearer.

His bentwood boxes would be great motivatin for my
Lino-cut ceramic box lesson, too. In this lesson,
students create a 6" reduction printing plate - make a
three color print - and use the plate to impress the
sides of a 6" ceramic box. Many made a lid too for the
box using the plate. Some students added sculpture
elements for the lid. Once the box is leather hard -
more carving is done on the box to bring out the
relief. I have done this with 8th graders - but it is
also good for high school. I have sent it to many high
school teachers. Lesson hasn't been updated (not
checked for boo-boos)- but here is the link:
http://www.princetonol.com/groups/iad/lessons/middle/Lessons/8nwprint.htm
If anyone who has done this lesson has a student image
- please send it my way. I lost my student photos on
this project - all I have is my unglazed box.
Rather than glazing my box - I finished off five demo
panels different ways to show kids things they could
try. Someday, I'll do my box now with paint. My
preference for mine was glazing in different colors -
using the colors I did on my test panel.

I used the artist Dempsey Bob - and video Smart One.
http://www.dempseybob.com/home.shtml

I will add both links to Incredible Artists.

PLEASE post other Native Artists you admire...Do so
all through Novemeber. I want to learn as much as I
can this month (smile). I will do the web search then
to see if there is a web site...Just so you know
already - there is not a site for Jaune
Quick-to-See-Smith (but some fine work is online).

Remember to be Thankful this month! I guess today is
Thankful Marvelous Monday (smile).

Judith Decker

P.S. Folks, don't you think we could all be on first
name basis on this list? Please try to sign your post
with your first name. That protects your privacy - no
buggyman can find you if all you give is first name.
I've been signing all of mine even with Judy Decker
Ohio and no harm has come to me. You are safe to give
us your first name on this list - I promise.

What kind of education and training do you have? BS in art ed and a MS in

What are your activities and responsibilities on the job? and you think they
will all fit here!! teaching about art also involves teaching about and

learning about artists, historical events that effected art periods, art
materials, art techniques, and developing one's own artistic style. We also
need to deal with daily administration of attendance, grades, lesson plans,
meetings with colleagues, contacting parents, discipline, etc. the list goes on
and on

What do you like best about your job? watching a student discover their own
artistic ability and get really excited about creating art

Least? the ones in your room who don't care and you feel like you are wasting
your time on them rather than enjoying the time with the ones who do care

How much influence do you have over decisions that affect you? I feel I have
quite a bit. I purchase my own supplies (from a pre-set budget) I design my own
lessons and have quite a bit of lee-way with the curriculum, I am active in our
teachers association and faculty committees so I feel I have input on things

What are the positive and negative aspects of working in this field? positive -
knowing you are impacting quite a few lives negative - the number of kids in
the class is getting too high so there is fatigue and frustration

What skills, education and experience are required? communication skills,
college degree, experience working with kids at camps, summer jobs, etc

Is there any specific advice you would give to a person entering this
field? student teach at several levels so you can see what is out there, do lots
of practice teaching or job shadowing early in your college experience so you
really know what you are getting into before it is too late and you realize it
is not what you expect

Where do you expect to go from here? I have taught for 20 years so my next stop
is becoming an artist and maybe private lessons

Can you suggest anyone else whom I could contact for additional
information?

Hi folks,

All of you who know me well enough that to know that
no one who lies to Judy Decker gets away with it
(smile). I will blab to the world. I won't put an ad
in the local paper for that would be a no no (they
might try to sue me -- they can try to sue me for this
- but I have no money)....but I certainly can vent to
you that I was ripped off royally by a local computer
company. Not all tech wizards are honest folks. I
caught these guys in lie after lie -- they are not
giving me my money back for falty parts they sold to
me... I am out over $300.00 -- and the companies they
deal with will not extend any warranty either...so I
am venting to you.

I tried to stop payment - but it has gone through my
account already.

All folks in the Lima area will want to avoid Viper
Systems Computer on Robb Avenue. They can not be
trusted. I am filing a better business bureau report,
too. None of the workers there tell the truth. One was
even getting redder in the face as I talked to
them...so I know he was lying through his teeth. I
wonder if he was aware how flushed his face was
getting (smile)?

There -- now I feel much better. I have to get some
satisfaction for my $300.00 expense.

Oh....and they accused my WONDER wizard son of somehow
damaging the products they sold to me when he tried to
install them -- that is a BIG NO NO with Judy Decker,
too. The comapany has all of my falty parts -- and my
money now.

I hate technology when it doesn't work.... I am at the
mercy of those with the tools. My prayers won't fix a
broken machine (smile).

Sending love to all - be thankful today for your
working machines.

Judy Decker

Dear Art Ed Folks,

I have done all my homework...Wish I had done it
first. This is what is happening so far. Viper will
issue us a refund on the motherboard, processor and
one memory - not the other that they said my son
damaged - Now they are telling me they will give us
back the damaged memory that they took from my
husband. They are charging us a 15% restocking fee on
the motherboard, processor and memory. So of our over
$300.00 - will get back over $200.00 - so my fear is
not as bad as I thought....Oddly, though they can not
credit my account from the store - it has to be done
through their office manager who doesn't work
everyday...Supposedly, she will issue us the credit on
Friday this week. I guess time will tell if they make
that promise good. I won't tell you if they renig on
their promise - this is the last I will post.

I just wish I could let things roll when I have been
had - Someday I may learn.

Judy

Dear Art Educators,

I got a request for class critiques for high school.
Darn too - I had some good stuff on my hard drive. I
don't have access to my files right now.

Post good ideas that you have.

Marvin Bartel has a good critique on his site:
http://www.goshen.edu/art/ed/art-ed-links.html

Here is a critique from Patty (this is a repeat - I'm
just posting in case someone missed it)

Share ideas with the list. I'll save them into a
folder.

Judy

We are collaborating and they don't think I'm such an
old fogie.

Let go of some of your stuff and embrace some of
theirs.

Patty

Actually - this is ajust a test - but I do so hate it
when folks test me (smile). So I am just sharing this
poem right now. Sandy Bacon sent it to me. My
apologies to whomever wrote it as I can not give
him/her creidt....Enjoy!HAPPY THANKSGIVING TO YOU AND
YOURS!

    'Twas the night of Thanksgiving,
    but I just couldn't sleep.
    I tried counting backwards;
    tried counting sheep.
The leftovers beckoned the dark meat and white,
But I fought the temptation with all of my might.
    Tossing and turning with anticipation,
The thought of a snack became infatuation.
So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door
And gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore.
I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes,
Pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes.
I felt myself swelling so plump and so round,
Till all of a sudden I rose off the ground.
I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the
    sky,
With a mouthful of pudding and a handful of pie.
But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees
Happy eating to all, pass the cranberries, please!
May your stuffing be tasty; may your turkey be
    plump.
May your potatoes 'n gravy have nary a lump.
May your yams be delicious; may your pies take the
    prize,
May your Thanksgiving dinner stay off of your
    thighs.

I am planning to go to North Manchester Indiana and
have dinner with my cousin (my dad's cousing). We are
going to eat in the dining hall of the retirement
center - make it easy on everyone. I am looking
forward to it.

Sending all of you love on this Thankful Thursday!
(for 26 more minutes anyways).

judydeckeriad
Send Email Send Email

Greetings all,

Well - I see that my message got through Yahoo so
Yahoo passed my test. I guess we will see if Getty
passes tomorrow.

“We are inclined to believe those whom we do not know
because they have never deceived us.” – Dr. Samuel
Johnson, 1709-1784

Trust, which is the glue of business, is created by
dependability, quality content, and intimacy with
clients. Of those elements, intimacy is the hardest to
achieve. ~ George Forrest Colony of Forrester
Research, Inc., in Fast Company

I could find more - that this is enough. My Horoscope
was to "Trust my instints".

I had a bumpy road with another company - but all is
well so far.

I am sending a formal apology to the local company
that I dealt with. Something made me blab my
frustration to the world and it was wrong...BUT it
worked. They were more honest with my husband after
that.

After each one of my posts - they became more honest
(my first post was certainly a doosy - I reread it
today and am very embarrassed by it). I did receive my
refund check today. I am still miffed that I got
charged a 15% restocking fee on a damaged part - and
still miffed that they have my defective merchandise
that I paid for - but I can live with that.

So - especially you ladies out there - TRUST your
instincts.

Before you purchase any computer parts - verify
warranty information before you buy and get it in
writing and date it (some parts do not come with the
warranty info). That is the one way to protect
yourself.

Most distributors have warranty information on their
site - Also read their legal section. Manufacturers of
computer parts also have warranty info on their sites
as well. Some say that if you install the part
yourself - the product has no warranty. I did my
homework - a day late and a few dollars short. But it
was worth it. I was quiet yesterday on the lists
because I was busy searching warranty info....THEN lo
and behold the mail/internet company told my hubby the
parts I wanted to buy were not in stock and suggested
something diffferent! My whole day wasted! I had to
search for warratny info for the parts they suggested
to him AFTER we placed our order - THEN had to call
and cancel my credit card order - not only did I have
to call once - but twice to cancel -- and had to send
notice through their web site to cancel....what an
ordeal. Hopefully, my friend's tech guy can fix my
machine.

Well... I am feelilng so good about all of this so
far, I just might post "Honesty" tomorrow. We live in
a world where it is hard to be 100% honest will all
you deal with...but it is worth the goal.

Well - I see it is fabulous Friday already,

Judith Decker

P.S. for all who wish to send lesson plans for IAD -
Please hold off on sending me anymore files as
attachments. I have limited storage space on my
accounts right now. I don't have my computer files yet.

Dear Art Educators,

Please hold off on sending anymore plans to Incredible
Art Department until I get my files back.

I have prepared myself for the worse. When the local
company's warranty info suggests my files might be
gone now - I tend to suspect it is a possibility.
SO.... I am sending a formal apology to each and every
one of you in advance who may have sent me something
and I do not have it on the site yet. I can just start
a new "to do" list, right? This is just one step for
me to prepare myself - now I am "off the hook" with
all of my friends out there. I know - back up
everything...but how do you back up your mail boxes?
That is where all of my "to do" things are stored. I'm
not worried about the sites - those I can download
from Princeton....and as far as my documents files go?
It was time to clean those up anyways....I will start
fresh (although I do have an old back up for those)

I have so many ideas planned to share with all of you
once my machine is back.

Cheers to all.
Fabulous Friday!

Judy Decker

P.S. Here is a laugh out loud story about Judy
Decker....This morning I took off in my hubby's car -
just going for a drive. Lo and behold I ran out of
gas. I hadn't even looked at the gage when I climbed
in. Hubby usually keeps gas in the tank (he isn't like
me -- smile). Well... I managed to get it started
enough to coast around the corner and get it parked. I
climbed out and started to walk home....NUTS, I didn't
have my house key! (I left it in the kitchen - I took
his extra keys and left mine on the hook -- Yes I
fully intend to put a set of his car keys on my own
now).....SO I walked all the way over to my
girlfriend's house and spent the day with her doing
girl talk. She dropped me off at hubby's school at the
end of the school day. What an adventure in the life
of Judy Decker. Just thought you would get a little
chuckle. We sure did. The walk did me good.

Hug gladly accepted and now I am sending one back to
you. What the world needs is more chocolate
(smile)....I am referring to Hershey's Chocolate
kisses and Hugs. Don't know if you have those around
there.

Your message is a keeper. I better set up my own
personal "Judy" Yahoo folder for kind words. That
makes me motivated to keep on giving.

Drats - my personal reply to Royce was not meant to go
to the world (smiles)

But I am not ashamed that the world knows my gratitude
for list members like Royce.

Royce is the one who sent me that dandy site for Tapa
cloth paintings a while back. If my machine is not
repairable and I can not get that site to share with
you again. I know I can ask Royce for it again.

Cheers.... I'll post something for everyone soon.
Sending chocolate Hershey kisses your way.

Hi Bernie,

I will add a link to your site from Incredible Art Department once I get my
machine up and running again. I don't have the storage space to save lots of
email in my Web page mail browser. Please post your link to the site again
sometime after Christmas to remind me. I may remember to do it without the email
in my "to do" box - but I wouldn't count on it (smile).
