It's a very easy way to earn money. If you have a digital camera or
can buy one, you can make a living by taking pictures and submitting
them to 1000's of databases across the world.

In fact, a freelancer who doesn't even have basic skills in
photography makes over $300,000 in a year by just clicking all that
interest him and submitting them to websites.

You don't need any special printers or expensive photography equipment
because all the pictures you take will be uploaded directly to the

Subject: [art4life] MEETING WITH ARTISTS/ARTISANS ON 21ST JUNE 2005

This was a meeting held on the 21st of June 2005 at mid-day.

Members present

1.                  Monica Nankoma

2.                  Lawrence Ibanda

3.                  Kiwanuka Mulindwa

4.                  Peter Ndelo

5.                  Esther Tumuhairwe

6.                  Rwamwamba Gladys

7.                  Edida Sabiiti

8.                  Rose Namukasa

9.                  Moreen Mukasa

10.              Margret Asimwe

11.              Gilbert Matsiko

12.              Arnold Katonya

13.              John Nyende

The meeting was convened to make a follow-up in what is the way forward for Life in Africa.

1.                  Membership

2.                  Advertising/Marketing

3.                  Gallery

4.                  Making use of Café/office

  1. Membership:  Lawrence briefed the members that membership fee so far has been the only income LIA has been using, therefore, the members who do not pay membership are somehow failing some of the work to proceed.  He encouraged members to fully pay for the membership. There are also members who have deposited some money and have been reluctant to finish up payment.  Members agreed that, a non-fully paid member is not supposed to use the facilities in LIA eg, computer. Goods not put on the web, will not be allowed to participate in any activity, which will be on at that time. (eg F4F, bracelet) etc.  In this way members will value the importance of membership.

Lawrence was requested to compile a list of all paid/part paid members and set a general meeting. Members suggested 9th July or 16th July but would have loved Christina to attend.  This is to see who are the real committed members in LIA and also to brief them of our achievements and any new plans. We also encourage new members to join.

It was noted that some programs, which are very beneficial to LIA, e.g. Echoes of Africa magazine, eCreate etc are not very promoted in our meetings.  We agreed that we call a meeting of all interested members/new members, every Saturday at 10 o’clock to make a program and review what is in our last month’s magazines or what we would want to be published.  Also to guide or teach others who are interested to participate in this useful magazine. We noted that members need to be sensitized to know more about these other opportunities in LIA other than art and handcrafts, etc.

  1. Advertising/Marketing:  We have to let people out there know that the shop is now open. Addition to this subject, Monica informed members that during the last opening, we raised Shs.4, 200 which we could put to use in advertising.  Members agreed that we use that money to add on the signpost on the main road that the gallery is open.  Kiwanuka and Gilbert were assigned to handle it.

We agreed that we first use the free opportunities available to do our advertising and secure our little budget, which we have for the gallery to do other things. Kiwanuka Mulindwa to contact Kiwere Nathan in charge of art publicity programs on UTV, Nyende John to contact Showtime magazine on WBS.  Monica and Kiwanuka to find a way of handling the reporters in Weekly Observer who covered the function in Emin Pasha.  Monica to contact Sue and Amanda to advertise the gallery from the monthly meetings in the expatriate staff etc.

  1. Gallery:  Esther reported that the problem she finds in the gallery is that the prices are unfairly high and the commodities are very few.  The members also come and take their things anytime they wish.

Members suggested that there should be some deterrent measures on the things sold in the gallery, the Art works, more especially the artisan stuff.  We agreed that 1-month should be maximum time one to remove their staff which is not sold.  If a member wants to take it before then, will pay a fine of 20% of the cost price of the said commodity.

Esther to record the items withdrawn and are fully examined.  Members agreed to borrow money and stock the gallery.  A committee of 9 people was asked to meet and identify the products to stock the gallery and also to identify the real producers, set a price.

Members are:  Esther, Edida, Arnold Katonya, Namukasa, Serena, Rita, Immaculate, Pross, and Gladys.  Will meet next Tues 28th June 2005.

  1. Using Café/office:  Monica informed members that the use of our office is being abused.  Instead of members using the computers for the official/beneficial work, they just go into the networked folders and in the process; they delete useful stuff of the organization. She suggested that we should lay a schedule for each person to use the computer and when on the computer please use it with responsibility as your own.

Members agreed that a system of password should be put in place to avoid such careless accidents.

The new members who want to learn using the computer should follow the instructions given by trainers.

The core members will make a schedule to be followed and a password to be used in some of the important LIA files.  Monica to print posts warning on the use of computers and put them into promulgation.

Next meeting is slated for Tues 28th June 2005.

I support this 100% - It has seemed to me also that
membership growth is an income generator the WE Center
has been underutilizing.

Are there members with welcome pages that have not yet
fully paid?

I can attend on either of those days if I know in
advance.

VERY excellent point. Thank you for noticing :)

From the event we raised a shs. 450,000+ budget for
the gallery. Is this what is meant here?

DID OUR EVENT GET INTO THE WEEKLY OBSERVER? If so, I
really need to get a copy please.

uH OH... WHAT HAS BEEN LOST? Good idea to put a
password.

"Promulgation" ?! I'm always hearing how I use words
people never heard before (like "terrific"). This one
is a new word for me! :)

Hello Christina,
Quite simple actually.
There is a front-end (what the site visitor sees) and a back-end (where the
artists will log-in and upload images of their work / fill in their contact
details).

A site visitor then goes to the site and can search for artists work by type
of work (e.g neo-retro, impressionist, etc , etc) or by price (also set by
the artist) or by other criteria.

They then find the work they like (little thumbnails are auto-generated when
the artist uploads the work to the back-end) select it and get a page giving
details of the particular piece with various thumbnailed images (that open a
larger pic when clicked), and link to a specific "bio" page of the artist
and includes links to all art work he/she may have on the site, as well as
link to personal website if available.

The only drawback is that the viewer contacts the artist directly to
purchase/negotiate for the work ..... therefore not making it a true auction
site where one places bids on items displayed e.g E-Bay et al.

Also, due to local limitations of online merchant accounts, direct credit
card purchases cannot be done. However, the system can be integrated with a
number of online payment gateways ..... at least I think.

Let me know
Yuda

Hello,

I read that you are looking for volunteers for your auctions project.

I would be more than happy to help out.

Brief background:

My name is Yuda Mubiru and I design and develop web solutions as well as
doing a host of other things (too boring to mention in one e-mail).

I have worked on a number of project most notably Uganda Christian
University's website as well as other more commercial projects e.g
homes.co.ug

www.Cars.co.ug etc.

I think a system like that on the www.cars.co.ug <http://www.cars.co.ug/>
website would be perfect for artists, that is until a system of channeling
money to them (the artists) is worked out.

Anyway, let me have your thoughts.

Regards

Yuda

Hi Yuda - I'm definitely interested in knowing more.
Can you explain the system you refer to? How does it
work in practice?

My mistake - Sorry!

I would love for John to be involved in helping to
document this first workshop so others can learn. He
does such a great job with the pictures.

Hi Christina,

Oh no, sorry for Lucas's sickness.  It's sad that
you have missed your holiday. Hope he recovers soon.
I will put him in my prayers.

Some responses to your comments

Great to see the ideas flowing! Looks like you all
had a productive meeting.

Thanks,

Responses are below

The group at the meeting decided that a member from either LIA-CAN team or Art4life should be stationed at the gallery permanently, even after the opening so that they keep track on what is going on in the gallery, which items are bought, etc

Ok, we discussed this but some people were not quite sure if it will work with a reason that in case there were no sales, would this person sit in the gallery for free for lets'say a whole month?

Not for a shop opening, in my view.

I think you are right, thanks for your advice will let others know.

If you're going to be there all day, what would the guest of honor do, and when?

Actually we were just wondering if it was necessary to have a guest of honour.

This is a new idea - what will the video coverage be
used for?

We had a debate on this issue and actually Lawrence and I thought we would just take pictures but other members thought a video camera would be better for record purposes.

I thought the displays would be in the gallery? What
do you plan to display under a tent?

Considering the big number of Artisans we have and their variety of products they make, we thought the tent would be useful in case the space inside is not enough.

If you're expecting many people and food, have you
 thought about any tables/chairs?

I think we do not need any of these as the food we had in mind are snacks which can be consumed on the move.

Thanks for your comments,

I wish Lucas a quick recovery and I pray that Thomas
and Ben may not get it.

Good evening,
Monica.

Members at the meeting include:

 Gladys Rwamwamba
 Monica
 Deo Drale
 Gilbert Matsiko
 Diana Naluminsa
 Edidah Sabiiti
 Lawrence Ibanda
 Peter Ndelo
 Jonathan Ntanda
 Irene Nakato
 Esther Tumuheirwe

Lawrence thanked all the members who participated in the solidarity in style fashion at the new and grand Emin Pasha Hotel. Being the first show, we missed out on somethings things but since this was the beginning, we gained experience which will come in handy as we get ready to hold even bigger and greater events in the future. I am sure the lessons learned at that event will be useful in the future.

Part of what did not go well was the photography, so it has been decided by the group at the meeting that next Saturday the 4th of June 2005, all the models and designers will be at LiA WE Center to take more clear and better pictures which will be used on our wepages to market our designs and fashions.

The meeting discussed the upcoming event, the opening of the Gallery at Life in Africa scheduled for the 11th of June 2005, and the time decided was from 10.00am to 6.00pm.

The Art4life team represented by Drale,  has to decide the number of art works to be included in the gallery for the opening. Deo to contact all the members and agree on the number of pieces to be displayed. All the works must have labels and the prices indicated on them.

The designers; Moreen Musisi, Esther Tumuheirwe, Mary Munduni, Angella Agole-Roses of Mbuya, Immaculate Nabatanzi and Irene Nakato have also been asked to make outfits available  for the day in the gallery.

Fashion4Life (F4L) is the new name of the spendid group of designers that are with Life in Africa.

The group at the meeting decided that a member from either LIA-CAN team or Art4life should be stationed at the gallery permanently, even after the opening so that they keep track on what is going on in the gallery and do the selling on behalf of the teams. All the products MUST have labels and prices shown clearly on them for easy identification and sale as set by the product maker. The products must also be registered  to know how many each person has, how many are sold and the balance etc. We are yet to discuss how to pay this service.

Monica and Kiwanuka to design a Flyer for the event with a map to Life in Africa, and this
will be distributed to members so that through them advertisement may be made for the gallery
opening. It should be ready by Friday so that on Saturday the members present can take some to distribute.

Drale is to contact Radio-One,
Gilbert-Radio Capital,
Gladys-WBS, Drale-New Vision,

We want to have the occassion announced to the world in advance. The Life in Africa banner is to be hanged at LIA 3 days before D-day. Kiwanuka to see if it is possible to have the flyers
printed at the Weekly Observer.

Being the first of a kind we need advise from people who have experience, should there be
entrance fee at the gate? And if yes, how much could be the comfortable figure? Do we need a
guest of Honour?

Gilbert to find out about the Video coverage and what it will cost?
Gladys and Asiimwe to make the snack shack useful on that day as well as every day as life goes on at LiA.

We shall set up a tent in the garden for some of our display purposes in case it rains on that
day.

Next meeting  will be held on Saturday 4th 2005 at 11.00am. Members are requested to keep time.

Actually, for this first (of hopefully many) Peace
Tiles workshop, we need to prepare ourselves. I had
hoped to have 2 meetings to do that on Wednesday 15
June at 10am and another the following week. We need
to purchase materials and devise a plan of action, so
that we know what we are doing by the time we get
there.

There are 3 spots available in the car... if the three
proposed can't make it, then others can step in to
fill the spaces. Whoever goes this first time will
hopefully be able to help the others prepare more
workshops in the future.

ALSO - the following paintings were sold on Saturday
night:

Moses Bahuuta - Lonely Kids - shs. 260,000
Deo Drale - The Other side - shs. 250,000
Ritah Edopu - The Journey Begins - shs. 700,000
Humphrey Ndege - Orphan Child - shs. 850,000

There were a few glitches with the auction, but
hopefully we all learned something about how to do it
better next time.

BTW - I was supposed to be on vacation right now, but
Lucas has come down with the chicken pox :-(

Christina
