The curious case of Lajjo

The screenplay was ready but Ratnam
was not willing to get it scanned by
the usually nitpicking Aamir Khan..
Khan wouldn’t go further unless he
was shown the screenplay

										 H
  e’s a director who won’t
brook any interference and
he’s an actor who is leg
endary for his interfering ways in
practically every department, be
it the script, direction, the works. The Mani Ratnam-Aamir
Khan combo sounded lethal when
it was announced over a year ago.
And now it is learnt that the twain

  may never meet. The film’s
would-be producer Bobby Bedi is not saying a word —
even if the word is that the news is
off the track.
Second time lucky?
Aamir Khan was paired with
Kareena Kapoor. She has gone on
record to say that she would be
shooting with her Yuva director
once again, come this August. This
is the second time that a KhanKapoor project has gone for a full
toss. Earlier, the two were supposed
to share screen space for Vishal
Bharadwaj’s Mr Singh and Mrs
Mehta; the project was shelved.
   Next, the Chennai-anchored
director announced that he would
be making a film with Aamir and
Kareena as soon as he had completed and released Guru. Nearly
four months have passed since the
release of Guru.

According to an insider on the
project, “Bobby Bedi was aware that bringing two hot-headed
personalities together would be difficult.. he had spoken to them
separately about the possibility of
creative differences.. and requested each one of them to be
mutually respectful of each other’s responsibilities.”
Obstacles begin
So far, so good. Problems started
with Mani Ratnam paying more
attention to Guru. And Lajjo which
was supposed to go on the floors last October, had to be postponed to
this year.
Since the film is set in

Rajasthan, Bedi and Ratnam wanted to shoot the entire film around
winter in a non-stop schedule.The
shoot was expected to begin in
mid-October this year.
It is learnt that the screenplay
was ready but Ratnam was not
willing to get it scanned by the
usually nitpicking Aamir Khan.
And obviously, Khan wouldn’t go
further unless he was shown the
screenplay .
  Another problem: Mani Ratnam
needed a dialogue writer because
he is not well-versed in Hindi.
“Mani sir wanted someone
absolutely fluent in Urdu since
Lajjo is a period love story. He
zeroed in on Gulzar saab. But
Gulzar saab made it clear that he

would not brook any kind of interference. Even if Mani sir had convinced Gulzar
saab, Bedi was worried that he would end up
handling three diverse temperaments,” says a source.
The budget was another problem. Mani Ratnam didn’t want to
leave any stone unturned to make
the project lavish. But after burning his hands with Mangal Pandey,
Bedi was a bit apprehensive.
The project is the brainchild of
Bedi, who is close to both Ratnam
and Khan. Reportedly Bedi bought
                            ,
the rights few to the story some
five years ago.
Previous plan
He approached Ratnam to adapt
the Chugtai story Before this they
                        .
had toyed with the idea of making
a film on Mrs Indira Gandhi, but
had dropped the idea.
   Next, Bedi discussed the idea
with Aamir Khan during the making of Mangal Pandey. It is learnt
that he even agreed to pay a hefty
fee.. approximately Rs 10 crore to
Aamir Khan ( he charged Rs 7
crore for Yashraj Films’ Fanaa).
   “With two talented people
known for following their own
conviction, the ego tussle was
obvious, but Bedi used to be a
bridge among the two,” a source
discloses.
   For visual splendour, Ratnam
had booked his favourite cinematographer P C Sreeram. The
two have worked together on
Mouna Ragam (1986), Nayakan
(1987), Gitanjali (1989), Thiruda
Thiruda (1993) and Alai Payuthey
(2000).
   This was to be Kareena
Kapoor’s second period film after
Ashoka. Kapoor has signed a formal contract for the film. In fact,
she had been asked to block her
dates last year ..which she did by
not taking up any other project.
This had led to the speculation
that she was not being offered any
worthwhile movies.
This year, again her dates have
been blocked. But it is doubtful that
she is taking any chances of giving
that no-employment impression
yet again — she has already signed
on a couple of projects and is in
negotiation with several other filmmakers. This has added further
credibility led to the speculation
that Lajjo has packed up.
   Initially, producer Bobby Bedi
was willing to talk on Lajjo, but
halfway through our conversation, he suddenly remembered
that he had an “important meeting” and said, “Can you please call
me in half an hour?”
    When he was contacted again,
he said, “I can’t hear you, call me
tomorrow.” After that he has been
unreachable.
               vajir.singh@...

  What’s Lajjo about?
¦ Mirza Sahib (Aamir Khan) is a
   bachelor leading a debauched
life. He owns a shop and
   frequents brothels. He is
   coerced into hiring Lajjo
   (Kareena Kapoor), a prostitute,
   as his maid.
  His initial reluctance soon van¦
ishes as Lajjo wins him over.
Mirza marries her but his fierce
   possessiveness sours their lives.
  Her once brazen sensuality is
   now perceived as obscene.
  Mirza returns to brothel women..
  Lajjo succumbs to seduction by
   her neighbour.
  The duo is caught red-handed
by Mirza who beats her up and
   then divorces her..a few days
later she walks back into his life
   as his housemaid and life
returns to the way it was..
  Creative pangas
¦ Ghulam (1998)
   Though impressed with the script,
he refused to work under Mahesh
Bhatt, who was making more than
two films at that time. That’s when
   the director and his producer
   brother, Mukesh Bhatt, entrusted
Vikram Bhatt to helm the film,
   with Aamir’s approval.
¦ Sarfarosh (1999)
   Debutant John Matthew Matthan
went through a tough time.. Khan
was calling all the shots, right
from the concept to the release
   date.
¦ Mela (2000)
He wanted to prop up his brother
   Faisal Khan, in a desparate
attempt to re-launch him as an
actor. A rip-off of Sholay took
   almost three years to complete.
¦ Mangal Pandey (2005)
   Apparently, he was the unofficial
creative consultant of the film –
right from scripting, pre-produc tion, casting and remuneration to
   direction, post-production and
even the guest list for the
   premiere.
¦ Taare Zameen Par (2007)
He gave a break to his friend Amol
Gupte to direct his home produc tion but Gupte was completely
sidelined by Khan and his wife
Kiran Rao. Left with no choice,
Gupte opted out.. but Khan got
him in again as creative supervi sor, though the couple continued
   to dominate the project.

Director A R Murugadoss will be shooting the Hindi remake of Ghajini in Chennai. For the purpose grand sets are erected by art-director Samir Chaddha in the city.

One of the big-budgeted movies, the Hindi remake went to floors in Mumbai on 7 May with actors Suriya and Chiranjeevi taking part.

Starring Aamir Khan and Asin the lead roles, the movie has music by A R Rahman and cinematography by Ravi K Chandran.

Plans are on to shoot major sequences in Malaysia and Singapore.

Quite typical to Mani Ratnam's movies, Murugadoss is canning the movie with live sounds.

Murugadoss says, "It is indeed nice to work with a star like Aamir Khan. He is kind and co-operative. The whole unit is determined to complete the movie fast. Shortly the crew would be moving to Chennai to shoot talkie portions".

Good find buddy.

There is a similar piece in "Maiyya Maiyya" from GURU. During the starting of
the song, towards of the ending of the so-called "ASOKA" flute piece there is a
vocal which is a reverse of the words "Mehtaab ka chehra jhoomtha hai.." (which
comes later into the song).. I cant post the audio clippings as of now....do try
it out.

Cheers!

Murugadoss says, “It is indeed nice to work with a star like Aamir Khan. He is kind and co-operative. The whole unit is determined to complete the movie fast. Shortly the crew would be moving to Chennai to shoot talkie portions”.

The shoot of Vijay- Shriya, starrer Azhagiya Tamizh Magan directed by debutant Bharathan is almost 85 percent over. Producer ‘Swaragachitra’ Appachan is a happy man, as only portion leading to the climax and few songs remain to be shot.
Last two weeks, Vijay and Shriya were shooting non-stop for the film in and around Hyderabad. A major portion of the film was canned at this schedule, including fight scenes and portions of some romantic scenes. A.R Rahman is said to have come out with some great numbers for the film.
Our Ilayathalapathy is very happy with the way the shoot is proceeding, unlike Pokkiri, where there was a lot of tension with the director. Added to that, the buzz is that the film will give a new look to Vijay and has the potential to be a big hit.
Meanwhile the film is very hot in the trade circuits, and all areas have gone for a record price. Added to that in one of the areas, a resale has taken place, as the trade is confident that the film will release on August 15, as scheduled.

Yaah Sure !

Pray for me brother :-) & If Yuva / Swades / Guru - songs will b mixture of Tamil & Hindi lyrics at one go. RDB no need a mention. How abt Tamil Nos. -Newyork Nagaram & Athiradi Songs - ARR / Vaaji - Hariharan-Madhusri / Ilamai - Mix of original & remix version - ARR - BLAZE - NARESH - TANVI ?? about melodies like Munbae Vaa & Kaatril Oru Vaarthai ? hope Aye Hairathe will b there. Unlike his other 3d tour last year, USA & Canada should be lucky to experience new songs from PFB, GF, SOK, GURU. Rehman will highlight some of his works from LOTR with his favorite PIANO.

master's voice live with yeh jo des hai thera,Khalbali,Fana,Terebina
wow....My expectations are very high.....Any thoughts. There should be
a segment for voices of Rahman in this concert...

Added the pics to http://www.flickr.com/groups/arrfans ........ I hope its
visible by now..

Rahmaniacs,

It has been a long day for me already.. having a very bad headache :-( and the
time now is 1am.
(was written on the 09th May or rather 10th) So, I will try to make it as short
as possible.

I was looking forward for to this day since LOTR premiered in Canada.. We
friends planned to it
out for long but things didn't work out well.. Even I was intending to buy the
ticket for the
Preview but didn't had the time. Until 5pm today, I was not decided to go. And I
went alone. :-(
cause all my friends were busy with work or studies. I know that ARR will not be
there. And I was
half minded as I was pretty sure the tickets would have sold out. Fortunately,
when I reached
there.. there were about 15% of tickets still not sold. Paid Ł50 for a Ł60 (the
expensive ticket
available) ticket as it is a Preview show.. Bought a Programme Guide book (will
scan it in the
morning... and will figure out a way to post it at Flickr)....

The Theatre Royal has 3 balcony(s) (Grand Circle, Upper Circle and Balcony)apart
from the Stage
level floor (Stalls). I was seated in the 7th row (F row) from the Stage on the
Stage Level Floor
(Stalls).. which is not the best seat.. I would have taken the K row .. which
has great leg room
plus for me the F row was too close and I felt like I was in the middle of
Middle Earth.. lol..
but for more surprises I would advice anybody to be seated in K row.. for sure I
will be taking my
friends next time to row K.

I tried to take pictures of the stage (before the performance) but there was a
staff standing
right next to me and going "oh, you are not allowed to take any pics.." .. I was
thinking to
myself.. OK, fine but what about the rest.. there are others taking pics.. :-(
anyways, I was only
trying to take pics for you guys.. I had a bit of a bad luck with it.

I am not going to criticise the musical as I am not a Theatre goer.. or an LOTR
fan.. and all I
know is ARR and his music and thats what made me to be there.. I watched Roja
continuesly for 3
times.. when it came out of video. And I have listened to all most all ARR
songs. But I couldn't
recognise which is which on LOTR.. as either I was spellbound and couldn't
recognise which was
done by ARR and which was done Varttina.. but I was able to recognise few
haunting melodies and
some beats that rushes through your veins to your heart.

There were reporters from UK and Finland (where Varttina is from) but there were
none from India.
There were CDs available for sale again of Varttina's but not ARR's. (As we all
know it is not
that easy to compile a CD on ARR.. As if he wants to do one specially to be sold
at LOTR.. he
might have to go door to door of the Producers and Music Lables of those movies
that he has made
to ask permission.. But atleast by PREMIER I hope we can have one compiled.. as
Preview of the
show will be running for the next 4 weeks) In the Programme Guide (from my first
read) in ARR's
profile .. Lagaan is spelt Lagaa' but atleast the profile was upto-date.

As I knew that ARR was not here in London. After the show I didn't stay behind
to meet anybody
special (as I do not know much about the cast) rather I walked towards the tube
station. Then I
thought what the heck lets walk back and take a pic of myself in front of the
theatre. Guess, who
comes out of the theatre.. Christopher Nightingale (to those who do not know
him.. well he is the
guy ARR is with in the Airtel ad, he is the Musical Supervisor of LOTR and also
was the Musical
Supervisor of Bombay Dreams).. had a chit chat with him.. funny thing is he said
ARR is not here..
and I said "yeah, I know" (cause I am part of this group) lol... I asked the
actor who plays Sam
to take a pic of me and Chris and he obliged but unfortunately the pic is
shaken.. (me and pics
doesn't work out well.. as last time at the Bombay Dreams autograph session my
friend did worst to
the pics of me with ARR, all 3 of them) but still I will try and upload the pic
with him at
Flickr.

One thing is for sure ARR will be the most Googled celebrity in UK for this
month onwards. Saying
that we are very unfortunate that the arrahmanworld. net is still not updated or
rather not
online.
And I do know Vijay is doing is level best.

All in all Ł50 (thats more than ten thousand Sri Lankan rupees, Sorry Mum.) was
worth it.. even
though ARR was not there.. but his music was.

Rgds,

Mirza.
