Sonlight sounds fairly flexible; I like that. :) Sometimes I think
it must be easier using a "canned" curriculum but the way we're doing
it seems to fit the budget better!

I read an article in the paper about this program about a year ago
and I wished that Gilbert's school district had a similar program!
What does the enrichment program provide, besides the books? If I
remember correctly from the article you meet once a week, right?

Thanks, Tiffany for setting up this group. I live in North Phoenix.
I began homeschooling this year, I have a 5.5 year old and nearly 3
year old - both boys. We are currently utilizing Sonlight
curriculum, and enjoying it!! Sonlight uses various resources and
allows you to choose many (i.e. Scott Forman vs. Saxton math
programs).
Thanks for all of the information (especially the local information).

that I've found at Bookmans' here in Mesa. We also have access (free) to
lots of textbooks through the Eagleridge homeschooling enrichment program
that's donee through Mesa School District. The one "program" I'd like to
stick with is Mathematics in Action by McGraw Hill, or the Math in My World
which is very similar by the same company. So far I used it for 1st grade,
and I have thee 4th, 5th, and 7th grade books, and just bought the 3rd grade
one for next year from an ebay auction.
Lauri
I was wondering what ya'll use for curriculum? A complete course,
like Abeka or bits of this and pieces of that?
We're just getting ready to start Saxon 87 for math; for writing we
use the workbooks from http://www.writingstrands.com (just the
writing
book, though -- they have other books you can use to make a
"complete"
language arts class), I use spelling lessons from the McDougal-Littel
website, penmanship from a book I found on Amazon.com and social
studies/history from an older textbook I found at one of the used
bookstores.

The University of Arizona has an extended elementary through high
school correspondence course program. The course offerings for
grades 3-8 seem to be basic subjects: math, English, geography and
history, science -- both physical and life, and French. The high
school courses are a bit more extensive. There's no information on
the site about cost; you're supposed to e-mail or call them to find
out about registering.

Tiffany
There's a site: http://www.afhe.org/ that has a list of links to
various homeschooling groups all over the state. I never realized
there were so many!
This site also has a lot of other information: articles, an events
calendar, a list of colleges and universities that have accepted
homeschoolers, an information packet. This site is well worth a
visit.

There's an astronomy club in the east valley. Meetings are held at
Scottsdale Community College the second Wednesday of each month.
Their website is http://www.eastvalleyastronomy.org/
ASU's Astronomy department hosts an open house once a month -- the
next one is April 28th. Their website, which has directions and
times, is http://brian.la.asu.edu/~jaufdenb/openhouse/
I know that ASU West also has astronomy open houses, but I don't have
any information for that at my fingertips at the moment.
There's a really great astronomy page called the _Science Explained_
Astronomy Lessons. There are monthly lessons and an explanation of
whatever celestial event is happening that month. The lessons are
designed to start in December and run for a whole year, but there's
an
index of past lessons. The URL for this site is:

Happy Viewing!

On April 5th there was an article about unschooling on the education
page. I wish I could remember more of what it was about but at least
it wasn't very much against the whole idea.
In another article about the AIMS test, not sure which week it was,
there was a mention that homeschoolers can take the AIMS, if they
wish. I think you have to get in touch with the school district's
office to make arrangements. I'm not sure why anyone would want to
take it, but at least the option is there.
Tiffany
Thanks, Lauri, for sending the links!
I read this article and was surprised to read that kids who had an
allowance scored worse than those who didn't. I would think that by
having an allowance kids would learn how to manage money, but I guess
not.
High school is anything BUT "real life." My husband is insistent
that
our 7th grader will go to high school. He says our son needs to
experience "those kinds of situations" to prepare him for the "real
world." (sigh)
I'm working on him!!

Hi,
Guess I'll do a short intro also. I'm Lauri, married to Erik. We have 2
sons, Peter who is 7.5 in 2nd grade, and Kristian who will be 2 in April. We
started officially homeschooling in March of last year. Last year we used
Calvert for 1st grade, and although I enjoyed it, I found it too restrictive
and too expensive. This year we are using a mix of used textbooks I found,
along with a few supplemental materials from the web, or from our local
teacher supply store. We follow a more structured approach as that seems to
work best with my son. We "do school" pretty much every day in the mornings.
Peter also attends Eagleridge Enrichment program for homeschoolers on
Mondays. For outside "stuff", he takes karate, tumbling and swimming, and we
are also in Cub Scouts.
That's about it from here,
Lauri
I try to do small things with my daughter; like
colors, numbers, etc. I her do a lot of coloring
pages, she likes that. I am trying to teach her to
talk right now. She doesn't do much of that yet. I
guess every parent does some type of homeschooling
early on in their
children's lifes. I have lots of links on my pages so
it will take you quite a while to look at my pages. I
am from Tempe.

Hello,
My name is Brett L. Scott. I am a member of a development team that has
been working on an on-line educational platform. This product is now in its
7th generation.
I would like to extend to you an offer to start a beta program to allow
homeschoolers to collaboratively build educational content and then (at
their own option) share it with other members of this beta. There would be
no cost to participate in this program. Content developed would be the sole
property of the authors. Our benefit will come from the experience. Our
system allows authors to collaborate, something that has not yet taken on in
the educational content arena. This program would be a great way to prove
and refine the process.
To learn more about this system please visit
http://www.makemesmart.com
Interested parties should send e-mail to me directly at
blscott@.... Please include a reference to this proposal.
Thank you,
Brett L. Scott

Hi Barbara, and welcome to the list!
I wish I had started schooling as early as you are! I thought about
it when my son was in 3rd grade but didn't actually start till his
6th grade year.
Thanks for adding your page to the links. I haven't looked at the
whole page but what I have seen is very nice.
What part of Arizona are you in?

I will add your link to my homeschooling link page
when I have time.

Hi,
I'm Jo and dh Michael and I are homeschooling Kevin (7) and Kristopher
(5.5). We currently live in Safford, having moved here from Georgia.
We're basically unschoolers. It works very well for the kids, they're
learning so much.. but I'd feel better if we had more structure. You
know, measurable results! I worry about this constantly, and I'm thinking
of trying Oak Meadow for next year, but our lives are so chaotic this is
what works right now. And I can't argue the fact that Kristopher seems to
have taught himself to read in the past couple of months. (I know; if it
works, don't fix it!)
I have a web site for the group we were in, in Georgia. The links page
might be helpful and informative. (I'm always looking for things to add to

My name is Barbara. I have a 2 1/2 year old daughter and a 4 month
old son. I am doing some homeschooling with my daughter. I have
found tons of educational resources that I plan to use as I
homeschool. I have all the links and my lesson plans on my page
listed below. I put the logo to subscribe to this group on my
homeschooling page. I hope that brings more people here. I have to
go get my son.

I'm currently part-time homeschooling my 12-year-old son. He's in
7th grade -- he takes 2 classes at the local jr. high, Honors Science
and Citizenship/Consumer Sciences (each of those classes was a
quarter long). At home we're just finishing up Saxon 76 and using
the Writing Strands curriculum for our language arts. I'm using an
old Silver-Burdett-Gin (think that's the name!) social studies book I
found at Half-Price Books in Tempe. It was printed in 1990 so it's a
bit dated as far as current situations but right now we're just
finishing the Middle Ages so I figure it will last until we get to
the later 20th century. He's also getting computer lessons from his
dad -- right now he's learning the basic terminology and then I
believe the plan is for him to start learning C++.
I also usually enroll him in classes at either the local Parks and
Rec. or at the Mesa Arts Center, which has an absolutely wonderful
selection of music/drama/art classes.

There was a recent thread on the misc.education.homeschool.misc
newsgroup about school names. Has anyone named their school? Why
did you choose that particular name?
Tiffany
Hello all and welcome to arizona-homeschool!
For those interested in homeschooling in Maricopa County, information
can be found at:
http://www.maricopa.gov/schools/99guide.asp
The affadavit you need to fill out can be downloaded at this site.
There is also a resource list containing names and contact numbers
for homeschooling groups, testing programs, curriculum providers, and
more.
This is the Maricopa County Superintendent of Schools site, but as
the rules are based on state law, I would venture to guess that the
same holds true for other counties.
