Subject: Jan. 2 - Cleaning and Setting Up Your Altar

If you already have an altar, good! If you don't have one, you are
about to make one.

:-)

I've seen all sorts of altars, altars set up on a low rectangular
table, altars set up on shelves, all different ways. In Vodou
peristyles, most altars are big and solid, and they are part of the
structure of the room, made of cement blocks and built right in to
the walls. You can see photos of altars like this, and details of
objects on these altars, in the Photos section of the Vodou Arts
group, in an album marked "Altars and Altar Objects".

For the average American Vodouisant making an altar in their home, I
think it's a safe bet that people are mostly going to be using
tables, or boards set on cinderblocks, something like that, right?

So choose the place where you will put your altar, and make it very,
very clean. Again sweep there, and sprinkle Florida Water. And I am
going to tell you one little trick, say you learned it from Mambo
Racine. If your altar is going to be for the service of several
different lwa, ancestors, etc., then on the ground where you will
put your table, draw the vever of Minocan. Initiates in the Roots
Without End Society will know with what materials to draw the vever,
and how to correctly draw a vever in ceremonial context. But even
if you are not an initiate and have to draw the vever on paper with
a marker, do it, if you know the vever.

If you really can't find Florida Water, go to the grocery store and
buy fresh basil, it's not that expensive. Take it home, wash it
off, then put it in a bowl of water and crush it up with your
hands. Let this bowl of water stay in your refrigerator overnight,
then strain off the basil in the morning.

You are going to want a basic white altarcloth. You can put other
colors of altar cloths over it later. This white altarcloth could
be as simple as a white bedsheet, or as beautiful as white satin
brocade. To prepare this cloth, you must wash it. It must be very,
very clean! Once again, use water, a little of your first urine of
the morning, a little Florida water, and detergent. Rinse the altar
cloth well, and dry it outdoors if possible (this time of year, some
places are too cold).

Now set your table where you want, and then open the altar cloth.
Initiates will know how to salute the four directions and present
objects to the altar, but even if you don't know how to do that, you
can open the altar cloth on your altar with a prayer and a song to
glorify God.

The general operating principle for the sort of altar I am going to
explain to you, is that the rear of the altar is for ancestors, and
the sides and front are for lwa. The focal point of this altar is a
vessel of water. You are going to want a nice wineglass or a
crystal bowl, something like that. Fill it with water, add Florida
Water, and put it in the center of the altar. Everything you put on
the altar must be spotlessly clean, scrubbed, and fresh. Ogoun's
things are to be cleaned with oil, not water. Scrub that central
water vessel with salt, and rinse it well, before filling it with
water and Florida Water.

American Vodouisants have access to certain things that aren't so
easily available in Haiti. For instance, many American Vodouisants,
myself included, put crystals in this vessel of water. You can also
put a mirror under it, if you want to invoke for lucid dreams and
psychic abilities.

Now, at the rear of the altar you can put ancestral things, photos
of deceased relatives, things like that. In a Vodou house, the pot
tets of initiates are kept to the rear of an altar as well. This is
because initiates have died and been reborn, and the "double" of
their reborn self is in the pot tet.

To the sides and at the front, you can put things for the lwa. You
should first place whatever objects you have for your lwa met tet.
Then any other lwa you serve can have their place, but remember that
some lwa are not to be placed near certain other lwa. For example,
the sacred objects of the lwa Maitresse Mambo Erzulie Freda Dahomey
must be placed between the objects of two male lwa. (If you have
specific questions about a particular altar set-up, feel free to
post your question.)

Your altar should include a white candle, and then you can add color
candles for your particular lwa or for ancestors, if you wish.

My first initiator, Luc Gedeon, taught me a way of constructing "an
altar for seven lwa". Would you like me to teach it to you? If you
would, let me know. In the meanwhile you can include on your altar
whatever lwa you most desire to serve. If you have objects to offer
La Sirene, for example, place a smaller blue cloth on the part of
the altar you reserve for La Sirene, and put her offerings there.

Once you have your altar set up the way you want it, go shower, take
a white bath if you want, dress in white, and then go to serve at
your altar. Light the white candle first, and say your Our Father
and Hail Mary, if you can. Then address your ancestors, and light
their candle if they have one. After that, salute your lwa and
light their candles, and feed them if you want to, it's a very good
idea! Or you can simply light candles for them and then feed them
at another time.

There is information about the service of specific lwa online -
there is a service for Legba at
http://www.RootsWithoutEnd.com/legbaserv.html , a service for Ogoun
at http://www.RootsWithoutEnd.com/ogounserv.html , and a service for
La Sirene at http://www.RootsWithoutEnd.com/sirenserv.html .

(Beyond that, in July 2004 I and the Roots Without End Society offer
a one-week intensive seminar, "The Service of the Lwa", in which
participants make in-depth study of the ceremonial invocation and
service of specific lwa. So if there is a lwa you want to learn to
serve well, come see us then! For more information, see the Roots
Without End Society Calendar at
http://www.RootsWithoutEnd.com/calendar.html .)

When you have spoken with all your lwa, fed whoever you are going to
feed, you can make your requests. Once you do that, it's a very
good time to do divination - take out your Tarot cards or your
shells or whatever, and do a reading for yourself for the coming
year.

Then thank God, the ancestors and the lwa, put out the candles, and
end your service. Your altar is now clean and charged up, ready to
serve for another year. Keep it clean, bright and fresh, and you
will feel the positive energy the altar channels, you will be
invigorated and prosperous and in health. But if you let that altar
get dirty and dusty, if you start to put things there that don't
belong there, you will get headaches and feel dispirited and tired.

Food that you give the lwa should stay on the altar overnight, and
then afterward dispose of it using the methods I have taught you
already. Drink offerings, like bottles of champagne or rum, can
stay on the altar.

I hope you will make yourself a beautiful altar! And I hope you
will share your experience with us here on Vodou Arts.

Peace and love,

I personally do not have a problem with you re-posting what I have

can anyone tell me of a forgiving or forgetting spell? my ex and I
had a bad fight, and him being a virgo, he is not very forgiving, and
also cannot understand how I feel. In his mind everyone does things

>>Hi Kathy! Happy New Year to one and all. Yes, I do work under the
name of Samantha Kaye. Actually, it is a family name that I work
under - my original practice is New Orleans Voodoo fam trad. It is
our way to take a family name for practice. Like Marie Laveau,
undoubtedly the most famous example! :-) People thought say she
lived for 160 years, but really it was her daughter and grand-
daughter who continued her work after her death. Debra Edwards being
my legal name really isn't a secret - most everyone knows that! So I
am Mambo Debra, Mambo Sam, whatever anyone wants to use is fine with
me.

And if anyone is entertained by my website I think that is great! If
it brings a smile to anyone's face, for whatever reason - even to
poke fun, that's okay with me - better to be amused than sad,
right? Understandably it is not everyone's cup of tea, but I love
the fact that it brings people to the lwa and many of my clients who
originally wanted a love spell or money spell or whatever, end up
honoring the lwa in the long term and become very interested in the
practice of Vodou, whether they ever get initiated or not. And that
is a good thing, no? :-)

But the reason for them being within minutes of each other is that
the group is moderated and the time shows up of when the message was
approved. So a group of messages might be just seconds or a minute
apart. But everyone who is on my particular forum knows the "two

>>Actually, I never really mention my business on any groups (well,
other than my own, of course!) unless it is mentioned first. I don't
particularly feel that "advertising" on what are supposed to be
teaching/learning forums is quite kosher. That's just me. When I
get on any group (when I have time), mainly I just answer questions
that relate to me or if I can answer anything that I think might be
useful to anyone. Promoting my business is something I do
professionally through paid advertisements and don't feel that I
should clutter up groups with "oh buy this from me and buy that from
me!" My website is in its ninth year and I have a lovely customer
base and enough work to keep me busy. :-)

>>Actually Mambo Racine didn't know much about my business until
recently. As some others have done, I just kept my personal beliefs
to myself when I kanzo'd because I wanted to approach my kanzo with
just thought and talk of that. I mean it wasn't a big secret, but
basically just not discussed. Whether she cares to spotlight what I
do or not is her decision for whatever reason she chooses. Maybe
it's embarrassing to have a child who peddles commercial Voodoo!
LOL. I know my website seems like "pop" Vodou and perhaps to some it
is. But the products all have their basis in New Orleans Voodoo and
some Haitian Vodou and the kits all honor the lwa. I run an honest
ship and enjoy doing so. I am very proud of what I do. But I leave
it to each individual to make their own decision and have their own
opinion! Peace and Freedom!! :-)

I'm sorry to dredge up old posts, but I've been away during the holidays and
unable to access my email.

Racine has explained the viral sequence fairly accurately. It is a bit more
technical than either of us are qualified to understand, but it does seem to
be the heart of the matter. I was not enrolled in an advanced biology class
at the time Dr. Peterson gave me the information I quoted. When he spoke of
HIV, it was during a review session for an exam and he most likely
simplified the information to how most viruses act so as not to confuse us
on the test. I return to school next week and will question him on the
exact manner of HIV infection. Racine's explanation of HIV does make sense.
It seems I stand corrected.

Genetic mutations and adaptations are responsible for human evolution. Some
genetic mutations, such as the hemophilia gene, are detrimental to the human
state. Left without treatment, hemophiliacs tend to die before they reach
adulthood. Thus, hemophilia has been limited in the population. Left to
natural selection, detrimental mutations will eventually die out.

Genetic mutations can be helpful in some ways and detrimental in other ways.
For instance, the genetic trait responsible for sickle cell anemia also
provides protection against malaria. Tropical regions of Africa were prone
to malaria outbreaks. Thus, those with the sickle cell gene were adapted to
survive. However, the adaptation causes a different disease all together.

The "best" genetic mutations result in benefit to the human state. Skin
color is a genetic adaptation to the "native" environment. Light skin and
eyes are adaptations to cold, sub-arctic environments. Dark skin and eyes
are adaptations to warm, sunny climates. The HIV resistance that we have
been discussing is one such adaptation. Currently, the Plague-resistant
gene is present in a higer percentage of certain populations than in others
based on exposure to the Plague. Given time and allowing the gene to spread
naturally, AIDS could eventually be eradicated from the planet or at least
occur in so few individuals that it is no longer a threat to the global
population. Of course, we need to continue research to find a cure and an
immunization sooner. If those efforts fail, at least there is still hope.
We continue to evolve as a species. It is the way of nature. Nature is a
wonderful, awesome, and sometimes terrible thing. Natural evolution gave us
HIV. Fortunately, natural evolution will eventually provide us with
protection against it IF our education and science doesn't get there first.

Light and Love,
Dawna

Oh, no, I don't consider what you do to be in any
way "embarrassing", instead, I'm proud of you!

It's just like Houngan Ray Marlbrough's books - I'm not qualified to
comment intelligently because the branches of the tradition that you
are working in, you know more about than I do.

I haven't spotlighted Mambo Debra's website just because I thought
she might want to keep her work as a Mambo of the Vodou a little bit
separate from the work she does on her website. But again, I am
very proud of Mambo Debra, and I am sure she has plenty to teach all
of us.

Hello! You first need to go straight away and see a health care
professional, preferrably a medical doctor (no, not a chiropracter or
a podiatrist) and have your memory loss concern checked out. Ruling
this out first will give you great peace of mind. There are many
reasons for such a problem, and a spiritual one is not the first
place to look.

Good luck and best to you,
Houngan Aboudja

Hello Gucci,
Indeed you should heed Houngan Aboudja's advice. And let me just add
a bit to that -- if you are of a mind to visit psychics and such
don't be surprised if you hear "you have a curse on you" and "it can
be taken off of you for XXXXX amount of dollars." This is a common
thing when approaching these kinds of people with a problem such as
yours and really that is VERY RARELY the case. Be careful who you
choose to help you with this problem and, as Houngan Aboudja said,
see a medical professional in any case.
Good luck to you!

Thank you both,
I have seen a professional...they have suggested writing down. Even thought
spiritual things would help.
As both of you are right, I have been approached and told that I have a curse
however, due to my family and my own reading about "supernatural" I have
ignored the claims I have a curse. Thank you both.

This one really worked for me, my roomate and I used to fight alot
and she would start most of the arguments and alot of times I would
be in fault. But as soon as I did this it ceased!

Write his name down on a piece of white paper, with blue ink five
times fold the paper, and put it in plastic container with with
water, forgive him and forget about it!
He should really cool, down, and maybe he might even apologize
Feel free to personalize this spell for yourself

Hello gentle Readers! I'm dashing through the internet station in
haste, but I want to share with you a little "flavor" from our
annual dance on January 6, plus a little local context. See the
folder titled "Roots Without End January 2004". I'll delete it in
two weeks.

The first photo is of the Rada portion of our dance, and you can see
how beautiful our new ceiling decorations are, as the participants
form a circle around the poto mitan. There are two Americans and one
Englishman present, see if you can find them.

The second photo is from the Petro part of the dance. We went on for
hours! And the last photo is of one of my mother goats with her cute
little kid, one of five kids born from four mothers all in the past
few days.

Enjoy!

Peace and love,

There are a number of love spells which you can do using a person's
hair. A quick search on luckymojo.com (or Google) for "love spells"
and "hair" will give you a fair number of these.

I would advise against trying any of them: in my experience "love
spells" are more frequently obsession spells. If they work at all,
they're going to turn the person into a junkie who's addicted to your
presence... and who may not be happy about that fact. If you've ever
seen a "marriage made in hell" -- two people who make each other
miserable, but who can't seem to get it together enough to break
things off -- you'll know what I mean.

Even if your love spells do not work on your target, they're likely
to work on you. You're going to wind up feeling even more attracted
to this person, who may not have any more desire for you than s/he
did before.

All this being said, you are an adult, and capable of making your own
decisions. If you decide the potential payoff, such as it may be, is
worth the risks, you are free to take those risks. The information
is out there if you really want it.

Peace
Kevin Filan

Greetings once more in the name of the Mighty Mambo Racine, her
consort The One True G-D, and the Lwa.

We bring you sad news that we, the lowliest of beggars at the crumbs
of Mambo's table, have been humbled by Her might. Our tribute site,
Voodoo_Schmoodoo, has been taken off-air due to a complaint to Yahoo
by Her Highness, fighting bravely as ever for the cause of free
speech and we, too, must bow to the will of Racine!

We extend our apologies to the 1,500 who enjoyed our site during the
10 days of its short life, and to all of you who wrote to us to say
how much you enjoyed it and to pass on your own tributes to the
Mighty Racine. I know you will miss us. We tried for you. And we will
miss you too, fair brethren, but Mambo Racine has spoken and we, the
unworthy, must listen.

All hail Racine, conquerer of all, fairest of all Priestesses, most
venerable of Mambos, and purveyor of only the most legitimate and
authentic of Vodou!

Blessings,
Papa Schmoodoo
& Dr Voodoo (Papa & Doc)

Well... there are a few magical things you can do,
that is what you mean, right? Some people incorporate
the hair into a doll, but that is more European magic.
And there are other things.

But it's not likely that too many people are going to
give you this information for free. Most people who
know how to do this kind of work will want to be paid.
You might contact Houngan Ray Marlbrough, RayOwlbear52@... .
He knows more about hoodoo-oriented magic than a lot of
people, including me.

I wish you good luck!

I would suggest that on your birthday, you take a white
bath and then feed your ancestors. It certainly
can't hurt.

:-)

?

I haven't complained about that site to anyone. Maybe
some other people also found the site offensive?
