Similarities within groups of animals actually point to ONE Intelligent Designer

See also: Who is the most intelligent Designer? Human Genome Map Has Scientists Talking About the Divine (San Francisco Chronicle - 19 Feb. 2001 <http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/chronicle/archive/2001/02/19/BU141026.DTL>

The State of Ohio is currently working to produce academic content standards for Ohio's public schools, and has been seriously debating whether or not to include intelligent design in the state standards. Scientists who favour a 'design hypothesis' as an explanation for the incredible engineering found in nature have recommended modifications to the standards. They wish to balance the normal evolutionary explanations with alternative scientific viewpoints.

The Modifications summary states: "We are not opposed to the teaching of evolution; we just want origins science to be presented in a fair, reasonable, and unbiased manner."

They have therefore requested modifications which would make students aware of the debate that is going on in the scientific community and would also present biological evolution as theory and not proven fact.

Dogmatic evolutionists in Ohio have come against the effort to modify the academic standards, stating that intelligent design is simply religion in disguise, and as such has no place in the science classroom. They consider design theory to be 'junk' science, which will bring harm to the students' scientific understanding of the universe.

However, design proponents argue that both scientific theories - intelligent design and naturalistic evolution - have religious implications. Design has theistic implications and evolution has atheistic implications, and it is not appropriate to marginalise one in favour of the other. The design theorists state they are not interested in teaching religion or even any particular theory of creation. They want opposing scientific hypotheses to be tested against each other.  According to the Modifications summary - "Intelligent design seeks to avoid these controversies by focusing on scientific, rather than theological, arguments."

It is important to note that intelligent design proponents have no difficulty with many 'evolutionary' ideas. Most creationists agree with the concept of natural selection and the effect it has on variation within groups of animals. Natural selection can indeed allow finches with larger beaks to survive on one island and finches with smaller beaks to survive on another.  Survival of the fittest does usually decide which genes get passed along to the next generation. This adaptability within a species is often called 'micro-evolution'. The variation already present in the finch gene pool allows some finches to survive and reproduce in one environment, and other finches to do better in another. The argument that design theorists make is that micro-evolution does not add genetic information to the gene pool; the finches will always be finches, regardless of their beak size. They assert that 'macro-evolution', however - the concept that a finch can turn into a hawk, or a trout into a toad - has serious problems that have not been satisfactorily answered by the general theory of evolution.

In fact, design theorists have been arguing that certain biological systems are so complex and well engineered, they show great evidence of having been designed. These systems must have every part present and fully functioning in order for the system to work at all, and could not have come into existence through a process of naturalistic evolution. Biochemist Michael Behe is famous for the term 'irreducible complexity' which he uses to describe this difficult issue. If the chemicals involved in eyesight are not all present and working precisely, there is no sight. Not only is there no sight, but there is no reason for the eye and all its parts to exist at all. What did the eye do for the millions of years while the various components for eyesight 'evolved'? Design theorists challenge evolutionists to explain the evolution of complex biological systems.

The State of Ohio will be debating this issue for some time, and both the intelligent design and evolution proponents are seeking support from the public. The Intelligent Design Network has provided a page for comments on this issue, which they should have presented to the Department of Education by January 31, 2002. There are also links provided below which provide contact information for those involved in the decision, including the Ohio Department of Education and the state House and Senate Education Committees. We encourage those of you who have studied this issue to communicate your thoughts and experience on the matter.

On Humility   >>>>>

An old man was asked, "What is humility?" and he said in reply, "Humility is a great work, and a work of God. The way of humility is to undertake bodily labour and believe yourself a sinner and make yourself subject to all." Then a brother said, "What does it mean, to be subject to all?" The old man answered, "To be subject to all is not to give your attention to the sins of others but always to give your attention to your own sins and to pray without ceasing to God."

"Humility is the only thing we need; one can still fall having virtues other than humility but with humility one does not fall." --Elder Herman of Mt. Athos

General Audience Address on Psalm 18(19)

VATICAN CITY, JAN. 30, 2002 (Zenit.org).- Creation is an open book that speaks of God's beauty, John Paul II said during today's general audience when he meditated on Psalm 18(19). Here is a translation of his address, which he gave in Italian.

* * *

1. The sun, with its increasing brilliance in the sky, the splendour of its light, and the beneficent warmth of its rays, has captivated humanity since the beginning. In many ways human beings have manifested their gratitude for this source of life and well-being, with an enthusiasm that often reaches the height of authentic poetry. The wonderful Psalm 18[19], the first part of which we have just proclaimed, is not only a prayer in the form of a hymn of extraordinary intensity; but is also a poetic song addressed to the sun and its shining on the face of the earth. In this way, the Psalmist joins a long list of singers of the ancient Near East, who exalted the day star that shines in the skies, which in their regions long dominates with its burning heat. It reminds us of the famous hymn to Aton, composed by Pharaoh Akhnaton in the 14th century B.C., and dedicated to the solar disc regarded as a divinity.

However, for the man of the Bible, there is a radical difference in regard to these solar hymns: The sun is not a god, but a creature at the service of the one God and Creator. Suffice it to remember the words of Genesis: "Then God said: 'Let there be lights in the dome of the sky, to separate day from night. Let them mark the fixed times, the days and the years.' ... God made the two great lights, the greater one to govern the day, and the lesser one to govern the night. ... And God saw how good it was" (Genesis 1:14,16,18).

2. Before going over the verses of the Psalm chosen by the Liturgy, let us look at it as a whole. Psalm 18[19] is similar to a diptych. In the first part (verses 2-7), which today has become our prayer, we find a hymn to the Creator, whose mysterious grandeur is manifested in the sun and the moon. In the second part of the Psalm (verses 8-15), instead, we find a wise hymn to the Torah, namely, to the Law of God.

Both parts are suffused with a common theme: God illuminates the universe with the brilliance of the sun and illuminates humanity with the splendour of his Word contained in biblical Revelation. It is almost like a double sun: The first is a cosmic epiphany of the Creator; the second is a historical and free manifestation of the Saviour God. It is not accidental that the Torah, the divine Word, is described with "solar" tones: "The commandment of the Lord is pure, enlightening the eyes" (verse 8).

3. But let us go back now to the first part of the Psalm. It begins with a wonderful personification of the heavens, which to the sacred Author appear as eloquent witnesses of the creative work of God (verses 2-5). They, in fact, "narrate," "announce" the wonders of the divine work (see verse 2). The day and night are also represented as messengers that transmit the great news of creation. This is a silent testimony, which nevertheless makes itself forcefully heard as a voice throughout the cosmos.

With the interior vision of the soul, with religious intuition not distracted by superficiality, man and woman can discover that the world is not dumb but speaks of the Creator. As the ancient sage said, "From the greatness and beauty of created things their original author, by analogy, is seen" (Wisdom 13:5). St. Paul also reminds the Romans that "Ever since the creation of the world, his invisible attributes of eternal power and divinity have been able to be understood and perceived in what he has made" (Romans 1:20).

4. Then the hymn gives way to the sun. The luminous globe is depicted by the inspired poet as a heroic warrior who leaves the chamber where he spent the night, emerges from the heart of darkness and begins his inexhaustible course in the heavens (verses 6-7). It is like an athlete who never pauses or is exhausted, while the whole of our planet is enveloped in its irresistible warmth.

Hence, the sun is compared to a spouse, a hero, a champion who, by divine order, must fulfill a task every day, a conquest, and a race in the sidereal spaces. The Psalmist thus points to the flaming sun in mid-sky, while all the earth is enveloped by its heat, the air is still, no angle of the horizon can escape from its light.

5. The solar image of the Psalm is taken up by the Christian paschal liturgy to describe the triumphant exodus of Christ from the darkness of the sepulcher and his entry into the fullness of the new life of the resurrection. The Byzantine liturgy sings in the matins of Holy Saturday: "As the sun rises after the night totally radiant in its renewed luminosity, so you also, O Word, will shine in a new brightness when, after death, you will leave your nuptial bed." An ode (the first) of Easter matins links the cosmic revelation with Christ's paschal event: "Let the heavens rejoice and the earth exult with it, because the whole universe, both the visible and invisible, takes part in this celebration: Christ, our everlasting joy, has risen." And another ode (the third) adds: "Today the whole universe, heaven, earth and abyss, is full of light and the whole of creation sings the resurrection of Christ, our strength and our joy." Finally, another ode (the fourth) concludes: "Christ our Pasch has risen from the tomb as a sun of justice shining on all of us the splendour of his charity."

The Roman liturgy is not as explicit as the Eastern in comparing Christ to the sun. Nevertheless, it describes the cosmic repercussions of his Resurrection, when it begins its song of lauds on Easter morning with the famous hymn: "Aurora lucis rutilat, caelum resultat laudibus, mundus exultans iubilat, gemens infernus ululat" ("The dawn is radiant with light, the heavens exult with songs, the world dances with joy, hell moans with cries").

6. The Christian interpretation of the Psalm, however, does not cancel its basic message, which is an invitation to discover the divine word present in creation. Of course, as stated in the second part of the Psalm, there is another and higher Word, more precious than light itself, that of biblical Revelation.

Anyway, for those who have attentive ears and unveiled eyes, creation is like a first revelation, which has its own eloquent language: It is almost like another sacred book whose letters are represented by the multitude of creatures present in the universe. St. John Chrysostom says: "The silence of the heavens is a voice that resounds more intensely than a trumpet: This voice cries to our eyes, and not to our ears, the grandeur of the one who made it" (PG 49, 105). And St. Athanasius: "The firmament, through its magnificence, beauty and order, is a prestigious preacher of its author, whose eloquence fills the universe" (PG 27, 124).

[At the end of the audience, the Holy Father gave the following summary in English.]

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

Psalm 18 praises God for his works of creation. The first part of the Psalm speaks of the heavens and the marvellous signs of God’s glory contained in them. The second part presents a very poetic description of the sun, which by its light and warmth gives life to man. The Christian tradition gives further meaning to this imagery of the sun, seeing in it a representation of Christ’s Resurrection, of the Lord’s triumph over the darkness of sin and death.

This Psalm is an invitation to discover God’s presence in creation, and to welcome his saving word, more precious than the light of the sun. Creation therefore remains a kind of first revelation which speaks to us clearly of the Creator and which can lead us ever more deeply into the mystery of God’s love for us.

Today I offer a special word of greeting to the Vietnamese priests and religious from various countries participating in a spirituality program, and to the priest graduates of Kenrick Seminary in Saint Louis celebrating their 25th anniversary of ordination: may the light of the Risen Savior continue to guide and strengthen you so that you may always bear effective witness to his mercy and love. Upon all the English-speaking visitors, especially those from Denmark, Japan, and the United States of America, I invoke the grace and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Pope Encourages Computer Science   >>>>>

Applauds Digitalisation and Indexation of St. Thomas´ Works

VATICAN CITY, FEB. 1, 2002 (Zenit.org).- John Paul II encouraged the use of information technology at the service of Christian thought, when he received in audience the group that digitalised and indexed the works of St. Thomas Aquinas.

The Pontiff said this effort will help new generations discover the timeliness of this Dominican thinker (1221-1274), regarded as one of history´s greatest philosophers and theologians.

The Holy Father today addressed the members of the Association for the Computerisation of Lexicological Hermeneutical Analyses (CAEL), which sponsored the production of the "Index Tomisticus," a complete glossary of the linguistic terms (some 9 million words) taken from St. Thomas´ works.

The work, which would fill 56 encyclopaedic volumes, has been compacted into a CD-ROM.

Among the CAEL members who attended the papal audience were Michel Camdessus, former director of the International Monetary Fund; Antonio Fazio, director of the Central Bank of Italy; and Giulio Andreotti, an Italian statesman; as well as Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, prefect of the Congregation for Bishops; and Cardinal Dionigi Tettamanzi, archbishop of Genoa.

The completion of the "Index Tomisticus," as the Pope acknowledged, was due to the tireless work of Jesuit Father Roberto Busa, a pioneer in the computerisation of human sciences.

The Holy Father encouraged the new enterprise that Father Busa will now begin, with the help of an international team of youths, assisted by university professors. This new endeavour is the elaboration of the "Bicultural Thomistic Lexicon," which over a few decades should translate all the terms used by St. Thomas into modern words.

John Paul II described the work of the Summa Theologiae´s author as an "authentic encyclopaedia of his time, summary of 40 centuries of Mediterranean culture: Jewish, Greek, Latin, Arab and Christian."

"St. Thomas marked an age with his genius and continues to be a luminous figure for research and love of truth, which dominate all his philosophical and theological" work, the Pope said.

One Perfect God, hence One Perfect Religion, hence One Perfect Church

Truth compels us to admit and believe that there must be and there is only one Religion of God and only one Church of God

If we but give the time and do as the Italian poet, Dante, advised in his epic, Inferno:

"Here, Reader, fix thine eyes well on the truth,"

we will undoubtedly find, if we are honest with ourselves, that after merely a little reasoning we shall be compelled to assent to the above proposition being undeniable. How is this so?

If we but go to the Beginning, and ask ourselves:

‘What do we mean when we say God?

We do NOT mean that inert being disinterested in all things human which the materialists have devised, but the true and living God, a Person, Creator of the world, MOST HAPPY ENTIRELY BY HIMSELF, MOST WISE ORDAINER OF ALL THINGS, a MOST CARING FATHER, THE MOST JUST LAWGIVER, Who punishes the wicked and rewards the virtuous, and, of course, He is in many more things the MOST GOOD, but it is sufficient for us to realise that:

# [1] He is the MOST HAPPY ENTIRELY BY HIMSELF,

# [2] the MOST WISE ORDAINER OF ALL THINGS, a MOST CARING FATHER, and

# [3] THE MOST JUST LAWGIVER, Who punishes the wicked and rewards the virtuous.

1. What is the result of God being the MOST HAPPY ENTIRELY BY HIMSELF?

It means that God has never had, nor has ANY NEED OF US TO EXIST FOR OUR OWN SAKES. It follows from proper reason that He has NOT made the Universe nor us for ourselves but FOR HIMSELF ALONE. This truth He indeed reveals: The Lord hath made all things for himself.

The meaning of these words is unambiguous. Man was created by God for God’s goodness. That this is so is further verified by the explanation of Saintly Doctors, such as St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-74), who commenting on the above words, writes: "God created all things … for his own goodness" (Summa Theologica, I, Q65, A2, O1)

This is very important to realise, for it means that, though God gives us free will, He does NOT give it absolutely as if we were ‘gods’, but WITHIN STRICTLY DEFINED CONDITIONS! We do NOT have freedom of will to do everything we could desire, thus we cannot choose to live on earth for ever, we cannot fix the weather, we often cannot live exactly as we like, either materially or morally, we have to accept His judgment after we die, and many other limitations, and in the end, there is no doubt, that although He INVITES us to ONE WAY OF LIFE, He COMPELS US TO CHOOSE BETWEEN JUST TWO WAYS OF LIFE - BOTH ENTIRELY ACCORDING TO HIS PLANS AND NOT IN THE LEAST OURS.

2. What is the result of God being the MOST WISE ORDAINER OF ALL THINGS, a MOST CARING FATHER?

It means:

Firstly: that He has a definite will or plan for each and every person, and these plans of His are of themselves perfect and absolutely unquestionable by us! And if we disagree with them then we do not know what God is, and, although we may not admit to it, we are more-or-less sick – dust and ashes, made of nothing, yes, of nothing, making ourselves greater than our Creator, saying as did Lucifer, ‘I will not serve’.

Secondly: it means that because He is MOST WISE AND CARING, He has ENSURED THAT, as He is PERFECT AND ONE, THERE IS BUT ONE SET OF PERFECT RULES/DUTIES/COMMANDMENTS by which He COMMANDS US TO LIVE SO THAT WE CAN FULFIL HIS DESIRE, BECAUSE HE HAS MADE US ENTIRELY FOR HIS PLEASURE AND GLORY AND HE ONLY RECEIVES THIS WHEN WE FOLLOW HIS PLANS. If He were not to have done this then He would not be God: not caring, nor perfect, and that is NOT His Nature, though it is most often how many people, through lack of a little thinking, conceive of Him in their minds.

This is extremely important to realise, because:

# IT MEANS THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE SET OF PERFECT RULES/DUTIES/COMMANDMENTS BY WHICH EVERY PERSON MUST LIVE AND DIE!

# AND THIS MEANS THAT THERE IS ONLY ONE RELIGION ACCEPTABLE TO GOD.

# AND IT MEANS THAT ALL OTHER ‘RELIGIONS’ GOD REJECTS AS HUMAN PHILOSOPHIES!

NOW THIS IS MOST IMPORTANT TO REALISE, so that WE DO NOT EVER TALK OF THERE BEING MANY ‘RELIGIONS’ WHICH GOD SUPPORTS AND WITH WHICH HE IS PLEASED. THIS IS UTTERLY IMPOSSIBLE. Without any irreverence we can safely say that God cannot support any so-called ‘religion’ other than His Own, for this is the perfect set of rules/duties of His One Perfect Supreme Wisdom. Otherwise He would cease to be God. It is therefore a mistake to propose any contrary opinion: there is then Only One Divine Religion Pleasing to God, which He insists all people find and follow – besides this one, NONE OF THE OTHER RELIGIONS DOES GOD SUPPORT – THEY ALL TEACH AT LEAST ONE IF NOT MORE DOCTRINES OF FAITH AND MORALS WHICH ARE OPPOSED TO HIS PERFECT COMMANDMENTS. This He is bound to condemn. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE THAT HE SHOULD DO OTHERWISE – IF OTHER RELIGIONS WERE TO TEACH EXACTLY WHAT HE TEACHES THEN, OF COURSE, THEY WOULD BE IDENTICAL WITH HIS ONE AND ONLY RELIGION!

From this it also follows that THERE IS ONLY ONE CHURCH WHICH GOD SUPPORTS TO TEACH HIS ONE RELIGION AND TO BE CONTAINED IN HIS ONE PERFECT PLAN, AND ALL OTHER SO-CALLED CHURCHES HE NECESSARILY CONDEMNS. IT IS IMPOSSIBLE THAT HE SHOULD DO OTHERWISE, EVEN THOUGH HE MAY TOLERATE THEIR EXISTENCE.

WHICH IS THE RELIGION THEN WHICH IS THE ONE DIVINE, PLEASING TO GOD AND SUPPORTED BY GOD? How do we find it? Let us recall that God Who is MOST WISE AND CARING, KNOWING OUR WEAKNESSES, MUST HAVE ENSURED THAT IT IS EASY TO DISCOVER HIS ONE AND ONLY RELIGION AND CHURCH. If this is not so, then He is not the most caring, but most careless and unloving; but that is impossible! For we can understand that God is also the MOST JUST LAWGIVER, Who punishes the wicked and rewards the virtuous, and so He could not leave us to make a mistake not through our own fault and then be punished by Him.

3. What is the result of God being the MOST JUST LAWGIVER, Who punishes the wicked and rewards the virtuous.

This means, so that we do not get punished unjustly, that God has attached to His One and Only Religion and Church some special sign or signs by which they can be recognised from all the other ‘religions’ and ‘Churches’.

What is the surest and easiest sign by which to recognise the One and Only Religion of God? It is the sign of:

MIRACLES: Miracles are extraordinary happenings, in which natural laws are suspended or reversed, which can only take place through the intervention of God. "The cause of miracles," St. Thomas Aquinas [Doctor] tells us [Summa Theologica, 2-2, q.178, a.1], "is the Divine Omnipotence which cannot be communicated to any creature."

Now it would be against the Perfect Nature of God to support by miracles any ‘religion’ and ‘church’ which were opposed to His pleasure by their teaching even one falsehood. It follows therefore that GENUINE MIRACLES WILL BE FOUND ONLY AMONG THE FOLLOWERS OF GOD’S ONE AND ONLY RELIGION AND CHURCH.

NOW WE ARE BOUND IN CONSCIENCE UNDER PAIN OF EVERLASTING PUNISHMENT TO SEEK WHICH IS THAT RELIGION AND CHURCH AND TO EMBRACE IT GLADLY AND LOYALLY – IF WE DO NOT THEN WE WILL BE CONDEMNED FOR EVER TO SUFFER.

BECAUSE GOD IS WHAT HE IS, IT IS UTTERLY IMPOSSIBLE THAT THERE IS ANY OTHER ANSWER.

EVERY MATURE PERSON OF SOUND MIND IS BOUND TO EXAMINE HIS WAY OF LIFE AND SEE WHETHER HE OR SHE IS WITHOUT ANY DOUBT IN THE ONE AND ONLY CHURCH OF GOD, FOLLOWING HIS ONE AND ONLY RELIGION! HAVE WE DONE THIS? IF NOT, WHY NOT? WHY ARE WE FOLLOWING EITHER NO RULES OR SOME RULES/IDEAS WHICH WE HAVE NOT EXAMINED CAREFULLY? WE DO NOT DO NEGLECT TO EXAMINE A BANK AND THE WAY IT WILL LOOK AFTER OUR MONEY BEFORE WE JOIN IT, THEN WHY DO WE NOT DO THIS WITH OUR MORAL WAY OF LIFE FOR WHICH WE WILL SOON HAVE TO ACCOUNT FOR BEFORE A PERFECTLY JUST JUDGE, AND THAT MEANS THAT WHEN HE JUDGES HE PASSES A SENTENCE WITH PERFECT JUSTICE AND WITHOUT MERCY – FOR MERCY HE SHOWS NOW, WHICH IS THE TIME FOR PERFECT MERCY, BUT JUDGMENT TIME IS TIME FOR THE PERFECT SENTENCE. YES, THE PUNISHMENT HE MAY MAKE LESS IN HIS MERCY, BUT THE SENTENCE CAN ONLY BE ONE OF TWO – THE BLISS OF HEAVEN OR THE PAINS OF HELL.

Now people from all walks of life who examined all religions came to one conclusion. For example what claim can any person make which excuses him from following in the footsteps of the St. Augustines (Doctor, 354-430) and the Cardinal Newmans, the Robert Hugh Bensons, Benjamin Zollis, the Malcolm Muggeridges, the Duchesses of Kent and many others who rejected their unreasoned adherence to unbelief or to some so-called ‘religion’ or false human philosophy and consented to give themselves wholly to the will of God, that is, to take up a life according to His one and only Religion, the Catholic Apostolic Christian Holy Roman Faith!

Are not the situations of other people very similar to that of St. Augustine? He professed the false philosophy of Manicheism, while living an immoral life, enslaved by the vice of lust, as evidenced by his irreverent if not a blasphemous ‘prayer’: "Give me chastity and continence, but not yet." (Confessions, Bk. 8, Ch. 7), and surrounded by Catholic Christians, not the least who was his pious mother, St. Monica. Eventually he heeded God’s call and became a Catholic Christian! Besides St. Augustine, we can call upon thousands of others who refused to sweep-under-the-carpet the truth they knew or heard and assenting to it became Catholic Christians. Let us take from these genuine lovers of truth, the examples of:

# Cardinal Newman and Hugh Benson, both ‘churchmen’ of the Anglican philosophical persuasion, or

# Benjamin Zolli, was the chief Rabbi of Rome during the 2nd World War, a teacher of Judaism, or

# Malcolm Muggeridge a well-known journalist of no strong adherence to any particular philosophy, or

# the Duchess of Kent, a Royal person, apparently a devotee of the Anglican philosophy?

This spectrum of converts is not exceptional, and it is an easily proven fact that people have converted to God’s Religion, that is, the Catholic Apostolic Roman Faith, from virtually every known so-called ‘religion’ and way of life. Their conversions came about, undoubtedly because at some point in their lives they had a genuinely serious attitude to life and preferred truth to the novelties of man-made philosophies and, hence, they were able to respond to God with an unbiased mind. Thus they demonstrated the irrefutable truth about God’s Religion:

"It cannot be difficult to find out which is the true Religion, if only it be sought with an earnest and unbiased mind; for proofs are abundant and striking."

Let us end with an example from life. When it was suggested to a young man that he could join a community of lay people and have a pleasant life provided he obeyed the rules of the community as organised by some of the elder members, he said he would never do such a thing without a condition. When asked why he would not join, he replied: ‘I do not want and should not wish to be obedient to rules made up by men. They cannot be trusted to be genuinely good. Only if it were guaranteed that the rules were from God and would be kept as God wants them kept would I consider to join such a group"

Should not this be our attitude?

It has been noted that, in general terms, people do not take up God’s one and only Religion, that is the Catholic Apostolic Roman Faith not because it is the mysteries of the this Faith which are an obstacle to conversion, but often it is because they are afraid they will have to give up some pleasure and so do not to examine the truth for fear of giving themselves any trouble or uneasiness. Thus they continue to live contented with the opinion in which they have been educated or been brought up, not checking whether this is right or wrong, and avoiding all such books or conversations as might better inform them.

   Hello Dr. Maged
I thank you for your contribution in this effort of bringing thw word of God to all people through many of your works on the net  . I am Milad Nehme from Lebanon .
I would like to speak about the differences between Christian denominations but it would take books , of course I am not an expert on this task .
but the one responsible about this site seems to be ready to quote from several (Catholic)resources , what seems to fit the subject , of course in the Catholic point of view.
And this does not mean that the logic being used to prove the theme , is a reasonable one , for example I'll quote a small passage

"  Since Christ said the gates of hell would not prevail against his Church (Matt. 16:18b), this means that his Church can never pass out of existence. But if the Church ever apostasized by teaching heresy, then it would cease to exist; because it would cease to be Jesus’ Church. Thus the Church cannot teach heresy, " ...

We know that in our days there are hundered of cults and foundation that teaches something about jesus and spirituality , and those are growing in teaching and funding and everything... So it is not wise to say that God is in favor of what they are teaching . and by making an analogy we cannot say that God is in favor of only "the Catholic church"

I have read what Dr. Maged and Dr.William have been writing , and I'm interested in the way that it was presented on both sides and I would like to know from Dr. Maged about the relation between the Coptic Church itself , and Rome's Catholic Church ....
I know that they worship the same God ...... but what about the administrative side ;   or is it just a mere admiration from the side of Dr. Maged ? or is it the whole copts' ?.

I add , if I may , that Mr. Hanna has the right to speak of what he knows about orthodoxy , and that the differences he know about the other C., cannot be merely wiped out from our minds . I don't mean that the pain is not forgotten and it should be , but I am empathizing on the doctrinal side that led to some errors , it in the first place , in the distant past ... ; and I might be wrong about this.
I would like to quote what Mr. Mamdouh have wrote :
"

Dear Drs William and Magued,

I am happy for your invitation to listen in a spirit of Christian brotherhood. I am impressed by the reforms that occured in the Catholic church at the Vatican II whose fruits are becoming more apparent under the late Pope Paul VI and the current Pope JPII whom I admire for his courage and call for peace and reconciliation not only amnong Christians but among all religions. This was clearly shown in the recent Assisi Conference which was spread over this blessed list.

As you mentioned Dr Magued the Catholic Church is the largest of all denominations. For me, this not only means power but it means also responsibility. This big church has always been the greatest since the conversion of the Roman Empire. Unfortunately, it had many transgressions towards other smaller churches causing (along with Constantinople) schism which ended by the great schism of East and West. In the 17th and 18th centuries, Rome sent missionaries to the Middle East and founded rival Catholic Patriarchs that withdrew several Copts, Syrians and Armenians from their churches. Today we have 7 Catholic patriarchs in the Middle East for the Copts, Syrians, Chaldeans, Greeks, Armenians, Maronites, Latins. The same is applying today in Russia as you do surely know. Those problems are now enrooted in our lands.

Upon a visit of Pope Shenouda III (I think in 1972) to the Vatican, Pope Paul VI said that we (the Catholic Church) were mistaken for creating Catholic churches in the Middle East because those weakened the national churches there. Likewise, it was also a great joy for me to read Pope JPII call for reconciliation and public apology for the Catholic church.

Now I can see unity better. I see Pope Shenouda, willing for unity is gathering the Oriental Orthodox together. Yet the globe's Christian unity cannot be achieved but through the most powerful church. Wounds that lay inside myself and inside people like Dr William have to be re-examined and healed. Apology was a first brilliant step, I know few other positive steps from Rome may lead to the unity of all Apostolic Churches.

Administration is not a big deal against unity as many people claim. National churches would have their own leaders as we knew in the first centuries, the throne of Rome, Constantinople, Alexandria, Antioch and Jerusalem. Whether people adopt primacy for Rome or not, I don't think people like JPII would make it a barrier against unity. We learn that decisions of the church were taken in councils like Nicea, Ephesus and Constantinople and not by an upper hand of Rome. We all know how this (primacy) attitude was a major cause of the schism in 451. Please learn from history and do not repeat the same mistakes. Would Rome insist of being Prima Unter Pares let it be a servant to others as our Lord has taught while washing the feet of his diciples.

I am a Coptic Orthodox and although, history and present attitudes of Catholics towards my church offend me much, I have faith and I trust that Pope Jean-Paul believes in unity that is based on correcting past mistakes. I can now see one Orthodox Catholic church in the future.

May the Lord bless ye all. May He bless this list to communicate a message of love and unity,

Shenouda Mamdouh

Subject: [Zeitun-eg.org] Papal Infallibility - "Even though the Pope would also sin on a personal level and in administrative matters on occasion"

Please note, Peter would always retain the truth even though he continued to sin personally like all of us. So too, the role of Pope, built on the "Rock" would always maintain the truth, even though the Pope would also sin on a personal level and in administrative matters on occasion. Christ tells us however, that the successors of Peter would safeguard the truth (Faith) always - Christ's own guarantee that the 'gates of Hell' would not prevail.

Papal Infallibility
The Catholic Church’s teaching on papal infallibility is one which is generally misunderstood by those outside the Church. In particular, Fundamentalists and other "Bible Christians" often confuse the charism of papal "infallibility" with "impeccability." They imagine Catholics believe the pope cannot sin. Others, who avoid this elementary blunder, think the pope relies on some sort of amulet or magical incantation when an infallible definition is due.

Given these common misapprehensions regarding the basic tenets of papal infallibility, it is necessary to explain exactly what infallibility is not. Infallibility is not the absence of sin. Nor is it a charism that belongs only to the pope. Indeed, infallibility also belongs to the body of bishops as a whole, when, in moral unity, they solemnly teach a doctrine as true. We have this from Jesus himself, who promised the apostles and their successors the bishops, the magisterium of the Church: "He who hears you hears me" (Luke 10:16), and "Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven" (Matt. 18:18).

(...)

It is the Holy Spirit who prevents the pope from officially teaching error, and this charism follows necessarily from the existence of the Church itself. If, as Christ promised, the gates of hell will not prevail against the Church then it must be protected from fundamentally falling into error and thus away from Christ. It must prove itself to be a perfectly steady guide in matters pertaining to salvation.

Of course, infallibility does not include a guarantee that any particular pope won’t "neglect" to teach the truth, or that he will be sinless, or that mere disciplinary decisions will be intelligently made. It would be nice if he were omniscient or impeccable, but his not being so will fail to bring about the destruction of the Church.

But he must be able to teach rightly, since instruction for the sake of salvation is the main function of the Church. For men to be saved, they must know what is to be believed. They must have a perfectly steady rock to build upon and to trust as the source of solemn Christian teaching. And that’s why papal infallibility exists.

Since Christ said the gates of hell would not prevail against his Church (Matt. 16:18b), this means that his Church can never pass out of existence. But if the Church ever apostasized by teaching heresy, then it would cease to exist; because it would cease to be Jesus’ Church. Thus the Church cannot teach heresy, meaning that anything it solemnly defines for the faithful to believe is true. This same reality is reflected in the Apostle Paul’s statement that the Church is "the pillar and foundation of the truth" (1 Tim. 3:15). If the Church is the foundation of religious truth in this world, then it is God’s own spokesman. As Christ told his disciples: "He who hears you hears me, and he who rejects you rejects me, and he who rejects me rejects him who sent me" (Luke 10:16).

Dear Milad,

>but the one responsible about this site seems to be ready to quote from several (Catholic)resources...
The only messages I write or compile appear under sender name "Zeitun-eg.org - <arbible@...>" - No one else posts under this name.

When I present the Catholic point of view, this is just meant to foster positive dialogue and love by clarifying and correcting any misunderstandings or prejudices regarding what the Catholic Church actually teaches . For example, many good Coptic Orthodox Christians wrongly assume that Catholics believe the Pope of Rome cannot make any mistake and accuse them of worshiping the Blessed Holy Virgin Mary like God.

I paste below my reply to a similar e-mail, this time from a dear Catholic brother, for your information (notice the two common declarations in red). I hope this answers your questions.

My actual personal faith (which "side" I take) remains mine, a private matter between me and God. But Zeitun-eg.org should always be an instrument of peace and unity.

Please keep this service in your prayers.

In Christ's everlasting love, joy and peace (the fruits of the Holy Spirit),

Subject: Re:

Dear Sirs,

Thank you very much for your message. Zeitun-eg.org is not an official Coptic Orthodox site, doesn't claim so and is not run by any Coptic Orthodox clergy  (it's the work of one lay individual). Coptic Orthodox Patriarchs (of the See of St. Mark/Bishops of Alexandria) have always been called Popes (simply meaning "Father"). Many of them are recognised as Saints by the Roman Catholic Church, including Pope St. Athanasius the Great (of Alexandria) and Pope St. Cyril the Great (or Kyrillos I, again of Alexandria), both from the period before the Chalcedon schism of 451 AD. Pope St. Athanasius, the 20th Pope of Alexandria (297-373), defended Christendom against Arianism (a heresy very similar to Islam's view of Jesus Christ) and was also the one who applied the term "canonical" to the exact 27 books of our canonical New Testament. Pope St. Cyril I, also known as "The Pillar of the Faith," was the 24th Pope of Alexandria (444 AD). He defended Christendom against the heresy of Nestorius (Patriarch of Constantinople), and said that if Jesus Christ is God, it follows that His mother is the "Mother of God" or Theotokos. St. Anthony the Great (middle of 3rd century), Founder of Christian Monasticism, is another great Egyptian saint (recognised by the Roman Catholic Church) who also belonged to the Coptic Church of Alexandria (not to be confused with St. Anthony of Padua (1195-1231)).

Recently, Pope Shenouda III was invited by the late Pope Paul VI to the Vatican, Rome (in 1973) where they signed a common declaration on the Nature of Christ that put an end to the misunderstandings of the Council of Chalcedon of AD 451, and paved the way for full communion between the two Churches in the future, God willing (see below). More recently, Pope John Paul II, a great defender of Church unity, visited Pope Shenouda III in the Papal Residence/Cathedral of St. Mark, Cairo, Egypt (in 2000, i.e., last year). The cathedral of St. Mark hosts parts of the relics of St. Mark the Evangelist returned from Venice to the Coptic Orthodox Church during the papacies of Paul VI (of Rome) and Kyrillos VI (of Alexandria) in 1968 (they wouldn't return the relics to a bad Church; would they?).

P.S. The Bishop/Cardinal of Venice is called Patriarch; titles are a matter of tradition (and of respect).

If you read the Early Church Fathers and transcripts of the first three ecumenical councils you will find that the Bishop of Alexandria was called Pope (these are early documents over 16 centuries old - translated copies should be found in the Vatican library/any comprehensive Catholic library). Pope John Paul II is also Bishop of Rome (one of his titles). The unprecedented (photographed) 1968 apparitions of the Blessed Holy Virgin Mary in Zeitun, Egypt to millions, even to non-Christians (in a Coptic Orthodox church - there is a Coptic Catholic church very near to this orthodox church, as well as Protestant churches and of course many mosques) was approved by the Coptic Catholic Cardinal at the time (in communion with Rome) and is a witness of Heavenly support to the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria, the See of St. Mark. We have been persecuted by Chalcedonian Christians in our own land, Egypt, after Chalcedon (451 AD) till Islam conquered Egypt in the 600s. In the common declaration signed by Pope Paul VI in 1973, Pope Shenouda III signed in the role of Pope of Alexandria (see below). There are many "bigger" problems that need to be resolved between Catholic and Eastern Churches, e.g., purgatory, immaculate conception, Filioque and Roman papal primacy (Eastern churches believe--as early church councils did--that the heads of all five major sees are equals among equals). So you see titles are the last thing to think of. Pope John Paul II wouldn't have visited a bad Church/man (Pope Shenouda III) last year and said what he said, would he? Please read the following and also this page, which is written  by a Catholic (most probably) witness of the Zeitun apparitions: http://www.zeitun-eg.org/pz0030.htm

1 Corinthians 1:11-13 For it has been declared to me concerning you, my brethren, by those of Chloe's household, that there are contentions among you. Now I say this, that each of you says, "I am of Paul," or "I am of Apollos," or "I am of Cephas," or "I am of Christ." Is Christ divided? Was Paul crucified for you? Or were you baptized in the name of Paul? 1 Corinthians 3:3-7 for you are still carnal. For where there are envy, strife, and divisions among you, are you not carnal and behaving like mere men? For when one says, "I am of Paul," and another, "I am of Apollos," are you not carnal? Who then is Paul, and who is Apollos, but ministers through whom you believed, as the Lord gave to each one? I planted, Apollos watered, but God gave the increase. So then neither he who plants is anything, nor he who waters, but God who gives the increase.

Luke 22:24-27 Now there was also a dispute among them, as to which of them should be considered the greatest. And He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them, and those who exercise authority over them are called "benefactors.' But not so among you; on the contrary, he who is greatest among you, let him be as the younger, and he who governs as he who serves. For who is greater, he who sits at the table, or he who serves? Is it not he who sits at the table? Yet I am among you as the One who serves.

In May 1973 H.H. Pope-Shenouda III of Alexandria visited H.H. Pope Paul VI of Rome. Their Common Declaration says:

We confess that our Lord and God and Savior and King of us all,
Jesus Christ, is perfect God with respect to His divinity,
perfect man with respect to His humanity. In Him His divinity
is united with His humanity in a real, perfect union without
mingling, without commixtion, without confusion, without
   alteration, without division, without separation.

After fifteen centuries, the two prelates declare a common faith in the nature of Christ, the issue which caused the schism of the church in the Council of Chalcedon.

ANOTHER AGREED STATEMENT ON CHRISTOLOGY (1988 A.D.---Between the Coptic Orthodox Church of Alexandria [Egypt] and the Catholic Church):

"We believe that our Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ, the Incarnate-Logos   is perfect in His Divinity and perfect in His Humanity. He made His Humanity One with His Divinity without Mixture, nor Mingling, nor Confusion. His Divinity was not separated from His humanity even for a moment or twinkling of an eye. At the same time, we anathematize the Doctrines of both Nestorius and Eutyches."

Please pray for Church unity, an intention of the Holy Father, Pope John Paul II. May this blessed Christmas time bring you and yours joy, peace, good health and an experience of the presence of God (Emmanuel) in our midst. God bless you and protect you (my sincere prayer; I am not a clergy to give blessings :-). You are also welcome to join Zeitun-eg.org/arbible group, and even to post to this group.

Sincerely,

Dear reader,

Merry Christmas. I hope that you will be abundantly blessed by our Lord and Lady this season.  I am interested to know if the webpage at zeitung.org was the work of one individual or many, and, if it is not too much to ask, I would also like to know whether you are Catholic?  From a cursory glance of the webpage I was not quite sure, because at times a "holiness Pope John Paul II" is mentioned, and at others "his holiness Pope Kyrillos or Shenouda".  I am not familiar with the latter. Your kindness and response is appreciated.  God bless you always through His mother.

Yours in Christ through Mary,
Giancarlo Ciccia

   Hello Dr.

"

Dear Dr Magued and my brothers on arbible,

I am impressed by the detailed article you sent. Although it was written in very big font (I am joking). I do agree with you that the unity of the church is a unity in communion not an administrative unity under the Vatican. Because if we follow the same trend, Constantinople calls itself too the New Rome that was conceived by Emperor Constantine the first Roman Christian Emperor. The Ecumenical Patriarch is viewed as the Primus Unter Pares head of the universal (catholic) church "Conversations with Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholmew I - Olivier Clement pg 7-8, ISBN 0-88141-178-7". I did highlight in red the word "catholic" in your message since I understood that you mean the universal church before division (Not specifically todays Vatican).

I would like to say to many of my dear brothers here, beware, the administrative unity of the church is one of the greatest scandals that caused church schism. In early centuries, church heads did like the apostoles has taught. They gathered to agree on dogmas in ecumenical councils. The first council of Jerusalem in fact was headed by St James the First Bishop of Jerusalem and not by St Peter who attended the council Acts 15:14 Yet this didn't mean that he (St James) was the head of A universal church. Primacy of Rome only came due to historical and political reasons which are relevant no more because the new rome now is Washington :)

I believe, that both the Vatican and Constantinople should stop thinking of Primacy and Infallibility of the virtual person of the Pope (in cathedra) and make more positive steps towards recollecting and uniting the wounded body of Christ.

I do not really intend to go in dicussion but I only want to put the hint that Primacy and Infallibility articles would never help uniting the universal church unless you believe that everybody should convert to Catholicism making the apologies of Popes Paul VI and JP II to Orthodox churches and all the efforts spent meanless.

I feel that some of the dogmas of the Catholic and Byzantine churches have to be read in their historical context to be better understood. For Christ's sake do not let those administrative issues hinder the unity of the church since you have the example set by the apostles and early church fathers.

You should also note the reform that took place at Vatican II. Popes are trying to do their best. Yet I think that every step they take forward is balanced by many steps taken backwards by (conservatisionist) Catholic people around the world.

Thank you,
Shenouda Mamdouh

azb wrote:

Hello Dr. Maged I thank you for your contribution in this effort of bringing thw word of God to all people through many of your works on the net  . I am Milad Nehme from Lebanon .I would like to speak about the differences between Christian denominations but it would take books , of course I am not an expert on this task .but the one responsible about this site seems to be ready to quote from several (Catholic)resources , what seems to fit the subject , of course in the Catholic point of view.  And this does not mean that the logic being used to prove the theme , is a reasonable one , for example I'll quote a small passage "  Since Christ said the gates of hell would not prevail against his Church (Matt. So it is not wise to say that God is in favor of what they are teaching . and by making an analogy we cannot say that God is in favor of only "the Catholic church"  I have read what Dr. Maged and Dr.William have been writing , and I'm interested in the way that it was presented on both sides and I would like to know from Dr. Maged about the relation between the Coptic Church itself , and Rome's Catholic Church ....I know that they worship the same God ...... but what about the administrative side ;   or is it just a mere admiration from the side of Dr. Maged ? or is it the whole copts' ?.  I add , if I may , that Mr. Hanna has the right to speak of what he knows about orthodoxy , and that the differences he know about the other C., cannot be merely wiped out from our minds . I don't mean that the pain is not forgotten and it should be , but I am empathizing on the doctrinal side that led to some errors , it in the first place , in the distant past ... ; and I might be wrong about this.I would like to quote what Mr. Mamdouh have wrote :"
Dear Drs William and Magued,<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
This big church has always been the greatest since the conversion of the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Roman Empire.
National churches would have their own leaders as we knew in the first centuries, the throne of RomeConstantinopleAlexandriaAntioch and Jerusalem.
May He bless this list to communicate a message of love and unity,
Shenouda Mamdouh  "

Subject: [Zeitun-eg.org] Papal Infallibility - "Even though the Pope would also sin on a personal level and in administrative matters on occasion"
 From: http://www.catholic-forum.com/catholicteacher/message.htm
Please note, Peter would always retain the truth even though he continued to sin personally like all of us. So too, the role of Pope, built on the "Rock" would always maintain the truth, even though the Pope would also sin on a personal level and in administrative matters on occasion. Christ tells us however, that the successors of Peter would safeguard the truth (Faith) always - Christ's own guarantee that the 'gates of Hell' would not prevail.
From:http://www.catholic.com/library/Papal_Infallibility.asp
Papal InfallibilityThe Catholic Church’s teaching on papal infallibility is one which is generally misunderstood by those outside the Church. In particular, Fundamentalists and other "Bible Christians" often confuse the charism of papal "infallibility" with "impeccability." They imagine Catholics believe the pope cannot sin. Others, who avoid this elementary blunder, think the pope relies on some sort of amulet or magical incantation when an infallible definition is due.Given these common misapprehensions regarding the basic tenets of papal infallibility, it is necessary to explain exactly what infallibility is not. 18:18).(...)It is the Holy Spirit who prevents the pope from officially teaching error, and this charism follows necessarily from the existence of the Church itself. If, as Christ promised, the gates of hell will not prevail against the Church then it must be protected from fundamentally falling into error and thus away from Christ. It must prove itself to be a perfectly steady guide in matters pertaining to salvation.Of course, infallibility does not include a guarantee that any particular pope won’t "neglect" to teach the truth, or that he will be sinless, or that mere disciplinary decisions will be intelligently made.

Thus the Church cannotteach heresy, meaning that anything it solemnly defines for the faithful to believe is true.

So it is not wise to say that God is in favor of what they are teaching . and by making an analogy we cannot say that God is in favor of only "the Catholic church"  I have read what Dr.
This big church has always been the greatest since the conversion of the <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Roman Empire.
National churches would have their own leaders as we knew in the first centuries, the throne of RomeConstantinopleAlexandriaAntioch and Jerusalem.
May He bless this list to communicate a message of love and unity,
Shenouda Mamdouh  "

Thus the Church cannotteach heresy, meaning that anything it solemnly defines for the faithful to believe is true.

Dear Dr. Maged,
Would you be so kind as to explain why I cannot find the book of Ecclesiaticus in what you call 'The Holy Bible:Catholic Douai-Rheims 1899. The same applies to the book of Wisdom, Machabees, Baruch, Tobias, Judith, Esther.
I do not know where or from whom you obtained your copy of what you call the 1899 Douai-Rheims, but you may be assured that that copy contains all the above mentioned books - always has contained them and always will contain them. You do a great disservice to God and mankind by calling your version of the Bible, 'Douai-Rheims' - call it what you like but do not call it Douai-Rheims - that is a falsehood.
Alternatively, add in the books that are missing and you can maintain the name.
Hoping to hear from you,
Dr. A.Z. Britten

When Theophilos of Alexandria Excommunicated John Chrysostom

Dear Shenouda,

In your message today, you said:
>by (conservatisionist) Catholic people around the world
To be fair one must also mention conservatives from all denominations. Personally, I consider conservatism (not to be confused with being proud of your national Church and her traditions) to be one form of aggression. Aggression is not necessarily physical, e.g., a person can morally kill another person. www.dictionary.com defines aggression as:
1. The act of initiating hostilities or invasion, e.g., accusing others of being heretics.
2. The practice or habit of launching attacks.
3. Hostile or destructive behaviour or actions, e.g., Orthodox conservatives who prohibit people from listening to Protestant tapes of simple (biblical) Christian Songs, e.g., The Better Life Team.
(Italics are mine.)
I like Haya.org policy. There you will find Protestant and Orthodox sermons and songs. Some sermons present very extreme opinions (e.g., Fr. Makary Yonan preaching that wine and TV are 100% sin; no exceptions), but again this is freedom of non-aggressive speech and that's how people get to know, love and understand each other, which I think is mandatory before any communion can become possible.

Also you said:
>I feel that some of the dogmas of the Catholic and Byzantine churches have to be read in their historical context to be better understood.
Again to be fair this should also be equally applied to the Coptic Orthodox Church.

Did you know that Pope Theophilos, twenty third  patriarch of Alexandria of Alexandria (385-412 AD), falsely accused St. John Chrysostom of treason and surreptitiously plotted his exile. St. John's last words were "Glory to God for everything!" Soon after St. John's death, his two greatest "enemies" were punished by God. Theophilos, Patriarch of Alexandria, went mad, and Eudoxia was deposed by the Emperor Arcadius, who was largely responsible for St. John's election as patriarch. Eudoxia developed sores and worms came from them. The stench could not be disguised by perfumes or incense, nor could people bear to pass close to her house.

I think full communion should ultimately take place and become manifest at the level of ordinary lay people like you and me, not just at the Church administrative level. Let's learn how to forget the past and forgive each other.

In Christ,
--Maged N Kamel Boulos

Dear brothers & sisters,

From time to time many of us wonder about how we can serve God - some
of us try to build churches, some of us donate money to organizations or the
poor, some of us serve the kids in our churches, and some decide to go on
missionary trips to bring others to the love and joy of Christ. This summer,
a small group of servants have decided on missionary in Africa with His Grace
Bishop Paul and we would like to open the opportunity to you to join us. So
if you think you are interested in missionary work, do not fear that you are
not worthy of it because we all aren't worthy to serve. It's only through
the grace of God that we may serve him. So please provide your contact
information (name, church, address, phone, & especially email) to either
akateko@... if you are in the New York area or mariam315@... if
you are in the Philadelphia area. Please let us know when we would be a good
time to meet. We are thinking of having a meeting for all those who think
they might be interested in the beginning of February, and we would like
everyone to be able to attend. Thank you and may God bless you in all your
work and services.

Your brothers & sisters in Christ

Saint John Chrysostom, Doctor of the Church (A.D. 407)

Introduction

Saint John Chrysostom's life gives us a sense of the awesome cost of Christian discipleship and of the truth that with God all things are possible. This incomparable teacher, on account of the fluency and sweetness of his eloquence, obtained the surname Chrysostom, or Golden Mouth.

His Earlier Life

He was born about the year 347 at Antioch in Syria, the only son of Secundus, commander of the imperial troops. His mother, Anthusa, who was left a widow at twenty, divided her time between the care of her family and her exercises of devotion. Her example made such an impression on her son's master that he could not forbear crying out, ''What wonderful women are found among Christians!'' Anthusa provided for John the ablest masters. Eloquence was esteemed the highest accomplishment, and John studied that art under Libanius, the most famous orator of the age; and such was his proficiency that even in his youth he excelled his masters. Libanius being asked on his deathbed who ought to succeed him in his school, ''John,'' said he, ''would have been my choice, had not the Christians stolen him from us.''

According to the common custom of those days young John was not baptized till he was over twenty years old, being at the time a law student. Soon after, he suddenly turned against the teachings of Libanius and decided to become a monk. He attended a school for monks under Diodorus; and in 374 he joined a community of hermits among the mountains south of Antioch. He passed four years under the direction of an old Syrian monk called Hesychius (quietness); and it was quietness that he wanted to deaden the pain of his mother's death, to put away the temptations of Antioch, to bury forever his love of physical pleasure. Later, he decided to practice self-mortification in a cave as a solitary. He denied himself sleep, read the Bible continually and spent two years without lying down. The result was inevitable; his stomach shrivelled up and the dampness of this abode damaged his kidneys. His digestion permanently impaired, unable to doctor himself, he was obliged to come down the mountain and walk to Antioch in 381. Shortly afterward he was appointed as an acolyte and then received priesthood.

His Early Service at Antioch

The aged Bishop Flavian constituted him his preacher when he was about forty, and he remained in this office for twelve years. The instruction and care for the poor he regarded as the first obligation of all, and he never ceased in his sermons to recommend their cause and to impress on the people the duty of almsgiving. Antioch, at the time, had 100,000 Christians and as many pagans; these he fed with the word of God, preaching several days in the week, and frequently several times on the same day. He had no care in the world except that Antioch should be brought to Christ, but in the middle of his preaching came the crash of tragedy.

In the tenth year of the reign of Theodosius (the fifth of that of Arcadius his son, the same year that Saint Augustine received baptism from the hands of Saint Ambrose in Milan) Antioch rioted against a newly levied tax. The mob revolted, tore down the statues of the Emperor and waited breathless for the punishment -- the destruction of the city. In spite of his age, Bishop Flavian, a man of eighty years, set out in the worst weather and made his way through eight hundred miles of snow to Constantinople, to implore the imperial clemency for his flock and the Emperor was touched by his appeal; an amnesty was accorded to the delinquent citizens of Antioch.

During the absence of Bishop Flavian, during the Lent of 387, Saint John could not contain himself seeing the executions of the Antiochenes. He began to deliver a long series of sermons known as ''On the Statues in which he said very little about the statues. In those twenty one homilies, he spoke of God's mercy, how there are things far more dreadful than death or slavery, and his hope that the people should embrace death, if they had to, or life, with equal courage. He says of Flavian ''God will not suffer this errand to be fruitless. This is the holy season. This is the season when we remember how Christ died for the sins of the world. Flavian will remind the Emperor of the prayer 'Forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive them who trespass against us.' He will bring to his memory that in this city the faithful were first called Christians by name. Let us assist him with our prayers; let us supplicate; let us make an embassy to the King who reigns above, an embassy of tears. And remember how it is written of repentant Nineveh, 'God saw their works,' 'They turned every one from their evil ways, and the Lord repented of the evil that he had said he would do unto them.''' Saint John kept excoriating the people for their past vices, their addiction to wealth, their love of the theatre, their sensual enjoyments. If they had lived more strictly, they would not have behaved like wild beasts, and if they were true Christians they would have not possessed this abject fear of the Emperor.

These staggering homilies delivered daily kept the flock together and hope filled the air despite the continuing tortures and imprisonment. After the storm he continued his labors with unbeaten energy, but before very long God was pleased to call him to glorify His name upon a new stage.

Archbishop of the See of Constantinople

Nectarius, Archbishop of Constantinople, died in 397, and the Emperor Arcadius, at the suggestion of Eutropius, his chamberlain, elected Saint John for the see of the city. He therefore dispatched an order to the count of the East, enjoining him to send John to Constantinople, but to do so without making the news public. The count repaired to Antioch and desiring the Saint to accompany him out of the city to the tombs of the martyrs, he there delivered him to an officer who conveyed him speedily to the imperial city. Theophilus, Archbishop of Alexandria, had come thither to recommend a nominee of his own for the vacancy; but he was forced to enthrone Saint John on February 26 in 398 as Patriarch of Constantinople. He who hated power was now in the seat of power. He who fought against luxury and despised the kings of this world lived in a luxurious palace close to that of the Emperor.

It was from that time that he was the unwilling victim of all those who feared his power. From this point onward he assumed the fiercer colors of Constantinople. He began to sweep Constantinople with his broom. He emptied the episcopal palace of the costly plate and furniture and sold the newly purchased marble columns and built a hospital with the money. He reformed the life of the clergy who, within three months, were up in arms against him.

After a tumultuous horse race held on Good Friday, attended by many Christians, he delivered a sermon ''Against the Games and the Theatres.'' He ridiculed the wealth of Constantinople: the marble floors dusted with gold, the rich carpets, the silver couches, the ivory doors and the golden horse bits. He objected strongly to dancing girls and singers who accompanied the bride and the bridegroom home after a Christian marriage, singing indecent songs. He objected as firmly to female mourners at funerals, wailing dirges. He spoke against slavery and on behalf of the equality of women. He must have known that the weapon would one day be turned against him for his exhortations seemed in their severity to have been lacking tact.

The Empress Eudoxia, who previously sent magnificent gifts to the churches and the poor and spent long hours listening to Saint John, turned against Saint John when he was wrongly accused of referring to her as ''Jezebel''. Knowing the sense of grievance entertained by Theophilus of Alexandria, Eudoxia, conspired with him to depose Saint John Chrysostom in 403. For three days Constantinople was in uproar, after which Saint John surrendered himself and was exiled but soon to return after an earthquake shook the city. Then again, a silver statue of the Empress was erected before the great church of Hagia Sophia (Holy Wisdom), to which Saint John objected and spoke loudly against. He was deposed again two months after Easter and was banished. He spent the last three years of his life from exile to exile where his health suffered from many illnesses. He uttered his last words, ''Glory be to God for all things'', and gave up his soul to God on September 14, 407. His body was returned to Constantinople in 438 with great glory, while the Emperor Theodosius II and his sister were begging forgiveness of their parents who had so blindly persecuted the servant of God.

Samples of His Homilies

On the resurrection of the flesh he says: ''If God had not intended to raise up us again, if it was His desire that we should all be dissolved and blotted out in annihilation, He would not have wrought so many things for us. He would have not spread the heavens above, or stretched out the earth beneath. He would have not fashioned this whole universe, if it were only for the short span of our lives. The heavens and the earth and the sees and the rivers are more enduring than we are; ravens and elephants live longer, and they are more free from grieves and cares. What then? you ask. Has God made the slaves better than the masters? I beseech you, do not thus reason, O man; nor be so ignorant of the riches God spread out before you. From the beginning God desired to make thee immortal. Ah, but thou wert unwilling!''

And about the monastic life and monks he says: ''They do not demand a few hours in which to shake the sleep from their eyes. As soon as they have opened their eyes, they are like people who have been immersed in contemplation for many hours; for their brains are not choked by an excess of food, and their hands too are pure, being composed in sleep and quietness. Among the monks, none snores or breathes hard or tosses in his bed or lies with his body exposed, but they sleep as decently as those who are awake, and all this is due to the orderly progress within their souls. These men are truly saints and angels. And do not wonder when you hear these things: their fear of God is so great that they do not suffer themselves to lose themselves in the depths of sleep and drown their minds. Sleep falls gently on them, giving them only a peaceful rest.''

Pope Saint Theophilus of Alexandria

St. Theophilus of Alexandria had little tolerance for anything that was not Christian. After becoming Pope of Alexandria in 385, he ordered the destruction of pagan temples in North Africa and used the stones to build churches. He supported Origen until questioned by a group of monks about the immateriality of God. Having pondered the issue for a few years, he condemned Origen c. 400 and began to persecute monks who followed him. When four Origenistic monks appealed to the Patriarch of Constantinople, Theophilus began to attack John Chrysostom and attended the Council of the Oak that deposed Chrysostom in 403. Some believe that Theophilus acted as much out of jealousy over the primacy of Constantinople as from the love of Christian doctrine (?). When Theophilus died in 412, his nephew Cyril succeeded him as pope of Alexandria.

Theophilus' correspondence with St. Jerome survives, as do letters to Pope Anastasius I and Innocent I. His tract against Chrysostom is also extant. Jerome translated some of Theophilus' homilies, which are preserved in Migne; other homilies survive only in Coptic and Ge'ez translations. Some scholars believe that Theophilus wrote On the Vision of Isaiah, which had been previously attributed to Jerome.

Saint John Chrysostom

John Chrysostom, c.346-407, was patriarch of Constantinople and one of the four great Eastern Fathers Of The Church. The son of Christian parents, John was educated in rhetoric and later in theology by Diodore of Tarsus. Feeling a call to the monastic life, he practiced a strict asceticism at home and later retreated to a mountainous area after suffering damage to his health. On his return to Antioch he was ordained deacon (381) and priest (386). His bishop, Flavian, appointed him to preach, a duty that he discharged with skill, and he acquired a large popular following in the next 12 years.

In 398, John was consecrated as patriarch of Constantinople. He administered the diocese with fidelity and courage, especially in a series of reforms. An ascetic in an age of luxury, John was unable to be subservient to the emperor Arcadius and his wife, Eudoxia. His "tactlessness" and idealism united the opposition, and he was condemned and deposed at the illegal Synod of the Oaks in 403. After a brief return to Constantinople, he angered the empress again and was forced to leave the city in 404. He died on an enforced journey to Pontus. Feast day: Nov. 13 (Eastern); Sept. 13 (Western).

A writer of pure, almost Attic style, John is one of the most attractive of the Greek preachers, and his eloquence gained him the name of Chrysostom (Golden Mouth). Most of his writings are in sermon form. Homilies survive on Genesis, Psalms, Isaiah, Matthew, John, Romans, Galatians, 1 and 2 Corinthians, Ephesians, Philippians, Colossians, Timothy, Titus, and Philemon.

Let's learn from history.

Glory be to Jesus Christ.

In Christ's everlasting love, joy and peace (the fruits of the Holy Spirit),

Dear friends,
It distresses me to see 19th Century thinking declared as good and proper in the 21st Century. I am Roman Catholic but would not have the affrontery and gall to claim my religion is the "one and only true religion" before which other faiths must "bend the knee", as it were; nor do I subscribe to a dogma of Papal infallibility which arose in the face of seemingly unanswerable movements of intellectualism and atheism (before Newman entered the arena!). Further, I think there is a danger of substituting the 'perfect practice of religion' in place of love of God! What a trap to fall into! Religion in essence is man's attempt to relate to God and by definition must be imperfect, despite the Truth and Mystery which adherents try to follow. I am impressed by the commentator to the group who talks of the need to draw together the broken, fractured body of Christ which Christianity mystically forms - this is the first step in the difficult process ahead, a process which must invite contributions from all the world's major Faiths.
Christianity has been in schism from the earliest times of its existence. I see the unifying principle inherent in Ecumenism coming through our Mother Mary, as She pilgrimages through time to the second coming of Her Son, Jesus, gathering all her scattered children on the way, pointing to Her Son as our Saviour, that is everybody. In the meantime we must respect each other's traditions and beliefs, otherwise there will simply be more trouble as fanatics impose more 'dictats' which can only lead to further division and schism!
Mary appears to Christians (all varieties!), Moslems (all varieties), Jews (all varieties) and all others at the apparition sites in Egypt. Her message is that God, Her Son, is for everyone. In all her apparitions she encourages people to love Her Son and live better lives for God - SHE HAS NEVER INSTRUCTED PEOPLE TO BECOME CATHOLICS! - She asks us to be Christian, in imitation of Christ.
May God Bless you all, in His Mercy, Geoff Carlin.

Just in case some of you don't know this already, Dr. Geoff Carlin, a very devout Catholic GP from Scotland, UK, was the person who bought me the first domain for Zeitun Web site--http://www.zeitun.org (still working) and ample server space and bandwidth and invited me to move files from GeoCities.com servers and expand the service on 31 August 2000. This coincided with the start of Assiut Apparitions of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

I then moved Zeitun Web site to a larger server with more bandwidth and got a second domain name from the new hosting company: http://www.zeitun-eg.org on 8 September 2001 (feast of Our Lady's birthday according to Roman Catholic calendar). The service will probably move again (transparently) to its own real independent physical server very soon (at same current hosting company), God willing, due to bandwidth issues.

I will always remain very grateful to Dr. Geoff Carlin for all what he did, and for their constant prayers, and invite you to visit their site: http://www.lovesembrace.com. I would also like to thank him for his words of true wisdom that he has just sent to this group.

Glory be to Jesus Christ.

In Christ,

"A brother who was insulted by another brother came to Abba Sisoes, and said
to him: 'I was hurt by my brother, and I want to avenge myself.' The old man
tried to console him and said: 'Don't do that, my child. Rather leave
vengeance to God.' But he said: 'I will not quit until I avenge myself.'
Then
the old man said: 'Let us pray, brother;' and standing up, he said: 'O God,
we no longer need You to take care of us since we now avenge ourselves.'
Hearing these words, the brother fell at the feet of the old man and said:
'I
am not going to fight with my brother any more. Forgive me, Abba.'"

Dear Sir..
I wanted to inform you about the miracle that happened to me..it was in January 2001..
God is a good witness of all what i say...and may be this miracle a good lesson for all of those youth having a low level faith in Jesus and his Saints..
It all starts in August 2000...when i failed in IGCSE and it s an english secondary degree..which i was studying in Kuwait and Egypt..and this is a degree which has a strange system where we choose the subjects that we want and we have certain times 2 have exams in them...June and November..but you must put in mind that i was a good example of and exceeding student and a progressing one althroughout my years in school..and was getting very high marks..
Before the results of these subjects in August i went to Saint Mina Monastary..and to the windmill..and prayed there..
A day before the results were published,i found Pope kyrillos' picture where he was in sorrow and looked very sad which i took and put beside me to know how to sleep..coz i was very anxious that night..
Next day was the catastroph...when the results was published..as i failed...i started crying...just having the impression of an unfair God and Pope Kyrillos..
I even thought of suiciding..coz i was depressed and had no goals to shoot at..as i saw everyone of my age has entered faulties and i m the only one thats didn t..
I had to think what to do..and i ve spent the worst days that i could have spent in my entire life..i was just thinking that where s the fair and kind Jesus..and Pope Kyrillos..My parents and myself kept thinking what to do...until we found a good solution...i should take the required subjects in November in order i could enter a university in the second term which starts at Febuary 2001..
So i returned to Kuwait which i left since 99 to take these 2 subjects..and exam in them...and the exams were to be taken in November as i said...so i only had 2 months to cover all the required areas in the two subjects..and these were my worst 2 months but the turning point in my life..I ve spent them all alone without all my friends as i was affected by this point so much as i was a social person...I didn t even visit the church at all..BUT...i started reading in Pope Kyrillos' life and miracles...and i cried each time i started reading..and say,"you have done all this..and u don t want to do a little thing for me"..
The subjects were away too hard for me..and very few people had passed in them..but there was no other alternatives infront of me..I didn t even study them before..coz i didn t choose the  subjects that i ve failed in..i chose 2 entire new ones..
The two months had passed and i ve finished the exams..and started to go to the church..and each time i entered it people started to look at me and as if they wanted to tell me you lazy boy..everyone is in a university except you..
I stayed like that for about 1 months..and left to Egypt again at the beginning of January..and there were only a few days for the results to be published..I had to wait..but this time it was completely different..I wasn t anxious at all...and i was very relaxed and self convinced that  m going to pass..and had a greater faith...THAN EVER..so that i had a very good sleep every single night...I went to the windmill a couple of days before the results..and cried again..saying,"come on dad...it s your time to put your hand on my wounds".."i want to finish please"..
One or two days before the results..i found a picture of Pope Kyrillos..but this time he was in his Priest clothes and appeared to be happy and smiling..I relaxed even more and smiled to the picture..
At the night before the result...i woke up and feel very worried and anxious so this time i ve learned the lesson..i ve put some oil on my head and slept immediately after it..Suddenly the phone rang..i looked at the clock and it was 10.30am i waited for 2 or 3 more rings then with an encouragement from Jesus..i picked up the phone..and there was my sister from Kuwait phoning and saying.."hey Peter..congratulations dear...not only you have passed but also with high grades.."and she was crying...i did to answering back.."really..thanx God thanx Pope Kyrillos..at last.."Dad also talked to me and was very happy and also mum..these were the moments i was waiting for...and they were beautiful moments..they were the hands of this holy man put on my big wound..i kept crying for a long time..just don t know what to do for this beautiful Saint..
He didn t stop working...i ve joined Faculty Of Pharmacy in one of the private universities..and this was also a miracle..as this university had a cooperation with U.S. universities and had the same systems..and i could leave at anytime to states..as my brother did his equivelancy and planning to leave to states as well..
Here i am in my second year in college and very happy in Egypt and thinking of not leaving at all..just to be beside the windmill..My House..
His miracles continue with me day after day...and thanx God i passed these two years with good grades...and my parents are thanking God everyday about this..plus i m living alone with my brother but as he s a doctor he has 6 shifts a week in the hospital...so i only see him once a week...but never fely lonely but supported from this beautiful father..Pope Kyrillos...his pictures are filling my room...and also he s filling my whole life..
I wanted to point on another important thing...While i was in Kuwait..and studying on my desk...there was Pope Kyrillos' picture on it...and he was holding a cross..and i was always telling him in the picture.."i want to finish please"..
I felt as if he s moving his head saying..."yes i will SON"..and was making a cross sign with his cross..i stared at him..and said,"if i passed i m going to write this miracle and these signs you r giving me.."
It s a bit late i know..but at the end i m trying to return a little thing of what he gave me...
A very important...touching phrase that he said in one of his books that i ve read...and really touched me...and cry everytime i read or wrote it...and hope every single person facing a problem which reduced his faith in God must read..
"God...who in the past ordered the sea and wind and so great quietness had develop..So..he could NOW order the sea of wounds and wind of problems to be quiet..so great quietness will develop"..

"Allah allazzy ammar albahr weh al reeh fa sar hedoo'o azeem..hakaza howa qader al'an and ya'mor bahr al tagarob wah al reeh allaty lel alam an tahda'a fa yaseer hedoo'o 3azeem.."
May God Bless you all...and remember me in Your prayers fathers...i really need it...
                            Yours Sincerely,
                             Peter Zakhary

Dear friends,
it's not only saddening and grief strickening but also shocking to later having
to swallow the bitter fact that a much loved brother could be so finger pointing,
and carelessly blundering so presumptiously as well. Only and just because of an
innocent advertisement offering "Time For Mercy" "Divine Mercy No Escape" Videos.

This is the voice shouting out of the wilderness in Jakarta - Indonesia, where
building a church is still being obstructed as far as permit is concerned, where
although we're minorities but we are and can still be so proud seeing and knowing
there's still a leader - JPII, servant of the servants  - voicing Christ's messages in
the international stage.

I feel moved to reflect and share with you these thoughts: "Glory be to Jesus Christ
and to Mary, the Temple of God, our first Church, the holy bride and faithful humble
servant of the Holy Spirit; mother of Jesus -- her fruits of the Holy Spirit, our Lord
and Saviour shown in flesh".

Learn from Mother Teresa and Br. Roger Schutz when they teach us praying to Jesus,
giving thanks to the Catholic Church, the Protestant Churches and the Orthodox's.
Help achieving peace and unity, make love not war..... ponder on these verses:
James 1:19 and Mathew 5:11 and may God bless you and all of us.

Comment from Dr. Geoff Carlin:

I think you have to publish the messages, as long as nothing is foul or obscene. The right to express opinion, even if it is mad or bigoted, is a precious thing. Personal invective or insult should really not be allowed under any circumstances.

Comment from Shenouda Mamdouh:

It is true that he says very nice words about the importance of church unity to become one universal apostolic church, yet difference is raised where he is mentioning that unity is administration rather than communion. I myself read about early bishops of the Apostolic church. We know about the 7 angels of churches (revelation), we know about the Jerusalem Council, we know about Timothy among many other national church bishops. St Peter was not a head directing them all otherwise it would have been mentioned somehow. Did he make a revision of Gospels and Epistles before being spread. Did he hold ecumenical councils to revise what is said or written. Weren't people like St Paul, St James and St John (Revelation) all independantly (and guided by the Holy Ghost) contributing to the unity of the church thought and spirit?

He is also mentioning that the One Head would say always the truth in councils and avoid division. We all know that St Peter had a different personal position from that that was sentenced by the council yet he respected the council's decision. Even today, Vatican granted national (catholic) churches partial autocephaly. To me this proves a failure to direct a universal church with rigid common standards. Wasn't that obvious in Vatican II? It seems to me that people do not want to have Christ as common head of their churches. They want a human that is perfect and infallible to replace Christ on earth. I remember that Christ said to ALL his apostles. I shall send ye another comforter, the Holy Ghost that the Father sends in my name. His spirit abides in all church angels and speaks to them directly. It is true that bishops in different nations have chosen a bishop to be their Primus and asked the help of the Holy Spirit through practices like the blessed lot or similar practices, yet this bishop is still conceived by all churches to hold the same episcopal degree of any bishop. I do have documents of pratices in the early church but I feel we should stop such a debate that leads to nothing since people on the list do not hold any official ecclesiastical responsibility.

I opened my heart to accept all apostolic churches and feel very offended when reading messages from people believing to hold the whole and only truth. I don't think such an attitude contributes much to church unity. May we pray for the reform also of our Coptic church that needs a lot of internal reform.

Sincerely,
Shenouda Mamdouh

One Lord, one faith, one baptism.

Thanks be to God for everything, for to them that love God all things work together unto good.

As we have just celebrated the great Feast of the Presentation – Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary, we surely can sing a few lines from that mystical and truly instructive hymn of St. Romanus in the honour of Her who draws us from the depths of ignorance ... who enlightens many with knowledge:

"O, Queen of the Heavenly Host, Defender of our souls, we thy servants offer to thee songs of victory and thanksgiving, for thou, O [Theotokos] Mother of God, hast delivered us from dangers. But as thou hast invincible power, free us from conflicts of all kinds that we may cry to thee: Rejoice, O unwedded Bride!

"We see most eloquent orators dumb as fish before thee, O Mother of God. For they dare not ask: How canst thou bear a Child and yet remain a Virgin? But we marvel at the mystery, and cry with faith: Rejoice, receptacle of the Wisdom of God! Rejoice, treasury of His Providence! Rejoice, thou who showest philosophers to be fools! Rejoice, thou who constrainest the learned to silence! Rejoice, for the clever critics have made fools of themselves! Rejoice, for the writers of myths have died out! Rejoice, thou who didst break the webs of the Athenians! Rejoice, thou who redeemest from pagan worship! Rejoice, thou who hast trampled on the delusion of error! Rejoice, crown of His dogmas!"

And how much we need Her to remind us that pagan worship is not a practice to be ‘respected’, but to be redeemed from, and error is not to be granted ‘rights and liberty’, but rather to be trampled on for it leads to nothing but delusion, and that it is the dogmas of good God which we should exalt, adore, love and exult in!

So, we may say the words of the hymn are not the Word of God. Very well, then, let us take heed of the words of the Theotokos: do as He tells you, and He tells us to: Search diligently in the book of the Lord, and read. And what do we there find He tells us about error?

The Lord hateth all abomination of error, and they that fear [love] him shall not love it.

So, O man, it is not a private subjective conviction that proposes God hates error. It is God’s mind and Word which declares this eternal truth. Why then, do you cry:

"Let us respect the things which heathens sacrifice"

Does not good God tell us that they sacrifice to devils and not to Him?

Why then, O man, do you cry:

"Let us bear the yoke with unbelievers, and make justice participate with injustice, and urge light to have fellowship with darkness."

Why do you not believe that, Christ has no concord with Belial, and the faithful have no part, no union with the unbeliever? O senseless Galatians, who hath bewitched you that you should not obey the truth?

It is not God but the world which offers many ‘folds and shepherds’, of which there is number and variety all but infinite. And men, when they have wearied of contradictory messages, opposing standards, hostile attitudes, settle down to the COMFORTABLE conviction that ONE RELIGION, that is, that ANY SORT OF MORALS AND BELIEFS, IS AS GOOD AS ANOTHER!

But think, O man, is that what you believe God is: the PERFECT, THE VERY ESSENCE OF TRUTH AND CARE for His creatures?

No, no, there is, another ideal in the world, that of its SUPREME OWNER AND MASTER, Whose ABSOLUTE WILL is ONE fold and ONE SHEPHERD for ALL the sheep for whom Christ Jesus gave His life and Blood, ONE Church for ALL men. He has founded His Apostolic Catholic Church alone for this purpose; nor, being Perfect, could He have possibly founded or approved more than ONE. She is the only religious body that has ever come forward and, with credentials from God, laid claim to the extraordinary title of UNITY and CATHOLICITY/UNIVERSALITY. To teach all truth, the ONE AND ONLY TRUTH to ALL men, IN ALL TIMES and in all places!.....

And what is still more certain, on whatever topic of the ONE Christian faith She speaks, whatever manner of men She addresses, in whatever age She exercises Her mission, Her teaching, like the God She knows has sent Her, like the truth She knows She utters, is one, unchanged and unchangeable, amid the flood of unstable, shifting, conflicting doctrines and opinions that storm and roar about Her. One therefore She is, not only in the possession of ALL Divine truth, as the refuge of all men called to the knowledge of the truth of God, but one also in teaching, explaining, defending, and defining the revealed word.

How is it, O man, that you propose that what was truth in one century is not truth in another? Surely you have not espoused that villainous ‘doctrine’ of that scoundrel, Omar Khayyam, singing his way to oblivion and destruction:

‘You know, my Friends, how long since in my House

For a new Marriage I did make Carouse:

Divorced old barren Reason from my Bed,

And took the Daughter of the Vine to Spouse.

‘For "Is" and "Is-not" though with Rule and Line,

And "Up-and-down'' without, I could define,

I yet in all I only cared to know,

Was never deep in anything but – Wine’.

Do you too make reason barren, and exult in the wine of sentiment? Do you too, confronted by the uncompromising beauty of truth, rather compassionate man than God and say: ‘What is truth’, and go on to make friends with man, as Truth, indeed declares:

"The compassion of man is toward his neighbour"

But what of God? Who is He to you? Read on and see:

"but the mercy of God is upon all flesh. He hath mercy, and teacheth, and correcteth, as a shepherd doth his flock."

He hath mercy and TEACHES AND CORRECTS AS A SHEPHERD DOES HIS FLOCK. And who is He, but perfect LOVING CARE, AND PERFECT ONE TRUTH, and so what will His teaching be but ONE SET OF RULES, COMMANDS AND COUNSELS – HIS RELIGION. If you will, go on, accuse Him, but do not accuse your fellow man of restricting you and each every person to one soul and ONE RELIGION.

But consider, O man, can truth change? Do you not say it does not and cannot, it is ever the same. If it did change, it could change only to error and falsehood, and then it would, of course, cease to exist. Thus does truth perish. It is therefore required of each and every man – no matter into ‘when’ or what ‘church’ or ‘creed’ or ‘religion’ he is born - not to depart one jot or tittle from those truths which God has revealed, and to remain in possessing and propounding them as firm, as unyielding, as immutable as the 10x10 times table!

You quarrel not that 10x10 is as equal to one hundred as it was a 100 years ago! You would quarrel, would you not, if your bank manager were to insist that 10x10 being equal to 100, was thing of the past, and now it was only equal to 20, so your $10,000 was only $2000! And what, O man, if you stood your ground, would you say to him if he said to you that, that was only an idea of your own and how could you possibly want to impose it on others in these present times?

Now, is not good God at least as uncompromising as the 10x10 times table? He having mercy and compassion on His creatures instructs and corrects them in love, and reveals and CONFIDES TO BE KEPT SAFE AND UNBLEMISHED His eternally unchangeable truths to the a BANK, His One and Only Church of Christ, the One and Only true Fold. But if there be many folds and one as good as another, what becomes of truth, and loyalty to truth, since truths received in one place are rejected in another, beliefs honoured today are cast off to-morrow, creeds, the expression of those truths and beliefs, are adjusted to suit passing fancy or popular passion! What is all this maze of contradiction but the destruction of truth! And when each person is taught to believe what he likes, what is this huge compromise with error but the denial of truth!

Does not, O man, common sense alone make it clear that contradiction is the destruction of truth, that compromise with error is its denial. To allow a thing to be at one and the same time true and false, is to make a fool of oneself mentally and morally. To let go the truth once consciously possessed, is the lowest form of moral cowardice; to receive as truth that which is not known to be the truth, is an insult against the human mind. And no official expounder of Divine teachings can allow them to be altered under penalty of making God a liar, God Who is Truth Itself, to Whom all error, as He Himself says, is an ABOMINATION.

It is in obedience to this fundamental principle that God’s One and Only Apostolic Catholic Church as the One true Fold puts forth UNITY as one of Her marks of Divine origin and remains faithful to it even when men would prefer and claim otherwise. God is not where disorder is; His truth is not where contradiction is. If His revealed Word is still on earth, having been delivered into the keeping of man, it is to be found where the teaching is one, as truth is one and as God is one. Do you not believe that Christ’s Church is already ONE? Then read on and dispel the clouds of error and confusion swirling like thick mists about us, given out by mistaken philosophists.

And this teaching that is one, uniform, logical, and uncompromising, is really the food of the soul intended by the Almighty for every person. He created the human mind receptive of truth alone, without admixture of error or contradiction. The normal man has therefore a natural right to hear from the lips of the authorized custodian of the Divine word nothing but the truth, and that perpetually. Men are all destined for one goal; the path of salvation is the same for all. All men are created equal – and ONLY in this sense alone is this famous saying perfectly true; HUMAN NATURE IS THE SAME ALWAYS AND EVERYWHERE. MEN HAVE TO-DAY, AS THEY HAVE ALWAYS HAD, the SAME needs; they have the SAME struggles for good, the SAME difficulties against evil, the SAME moral miseries. Hence they require the SAME guiding knowledge, the SAME SPIRITUAL sustenance, the SAME helps and remedies. They can no more live on truth and error at the one and same time than they can thrive on being fed meat together with poison. Thus they are ALL, WITHOUT EXCEPTION called to a knowledge, of the SAME DIVINE TRUTHS, they are all called to the ONE fold, and to them All the ONE SHEPHERD is sent.

Yes, ONE PERFECT BODY, THEN ONE HEAD, or would you, O man, have a monstrous being with MANY HEADS? And THE ONE HEAD, WOULD YOU HAVE A HEAD THAT COULD LEAD YOU ASTRAY WITH FALSEHOODS AND SUFFER YOU TO LOSE YOUR SOUL TO EVERLASTING PUNISHMENT, MAKING VOID ALL THE SUFFERING OF YOUR LORD AND GOD JESUS CHRIST! So why do you reject the munificent goodness and lavish care of God, who knowing well the fickle untrustworthy nature of man on his own, provided you with a HEAD FOR HIS BODY, HIS CHURCH, WHO can when it is necessary TO GUIDE YOU ON YOUR WAY TO BLISS AND AWAY FROM DESTRUCTION, WHO IN MATTERS OF DOCTRINES OF FAITH AND MORALS ALONE, HE ENSURES CAN SPEAK WITHOUT ERROR? It is impossible that it should be otherwise, if God is what He is, the PERFECT CARING COMPASSIONATE FATHER. Or do you say, that every person, is his own infallible guide, for Almighty God could do such thing? Very well, then all would speak and live by the same doctrines of faith and morals. But what do you see? Some say divorce is good at times, some say, at any time. Some say killing the unborn child is evil at all times, but others say, it is good some times. And so on, endlessly, contradictions, compromises, in the end, there being no criterion of what is good and what is evil. Perhaps, you say, but the dignity of man and education... Go then, O Man, and report what man does when he is told that his dignity and education should guide him. What do you see? 1500000 conceived but unborn innocent children murdered EVERY YEAR in the USA ALONE; 4000000 people in South Africa alone contaminated with HIV/AIDS, many of them dying from it. Do they not need an infallible guide? Do you, O man, not need an infallible guide. Well, know this.

Just as a 10x10 times table has a set of 100 numbers, or articles, in its make up, all perfectly correct and unalterable, so too good God has decreed, hundreds of ARTICLES OF FAITH IN HIS ONE AND ONLY RELIGION, ABSOLUTELY UNREJECTABLE UNDER PAIN OF ETERNAL LOSS OF MEMBERSHIP IN HIS CHURCH AND KINGDOM, AND CONDEMNATION TO ETERNAL PUNISHMENT, AND ONE OF THESE IS THAT HE HAS REVEALED THAT HE PROMISES TO GUIDE HIS ONE AND ONLY VICAR, HIS DEPUTY ON EARTH, TO SPEAK WITHOUT ERROR ON MATTERS OF FAITH AND MORALS [Denzinger 1839-40, Fundamentals Of Catholic Dogma. Dr. Ludwig Ott, Tan, 1974, p.280]

Thus no true Christian, having the Divine gift of supernatural faith, that is, one who genuinely has the mind of Christ True God and True Man, would be ignorant of, or would contemplate rejecting any one article of the Divine Religion. This is how it was 2000 years ago, is now, and not a jot or tittle will ever change or pass away. The whole world, O man, may cry: ‘unity, peace, peace’, but if it does not bow its knee to EACH AND EVERYONE of these beautiful precious thoughts of good God, that is, dogmas or doctrines, as taught by Him through His One and Only Apostolic Catholic Church, it will never have peace, or God will cease to be God! Listen to what the great ‘experts’, the Saints, say on these two points, typically expressed by St. Francis de Sales (Doctor of the Church, 1567-1622):

"It is true that there is only one faith which all Christians must have. ... Faith cannot be greater for some truths than for others. Nor can it be less with regard to the number of truths to be believed. For we must all believe the very same thing, both as to the object of faith as well as to the number of truths. All are equal in this, because everyone must believe all the truths of faith - both those which God Himself has directly revealed, as well as those He has revealed through His Church. Thus, I must believe as much as you and you as much as I, and all other Christians similarly. He who does not believe ALL these mysteries is not a Catholic [Christian] and will NEVER enter paradise." [The Sermons of St.Francis de Sales for Lent, Tan Books, 1987, p 35-36]

Oh, O man, this ‘expert’ as all the ‘experts’, the St. John Damascenes, the Basils, the Chrysostoms, and a thousand others knew and taught the same ‘yesterday’, before St. Francis de Sales, and all have received the same reward. Will you say it is no longer so? Well then, how do you express you love God with your whole heart, soul, mind and strength, as He has commanded you? If you do not adore Him in His wishes and revealed thoughts, that is, in His dogmas, then how do you love Him with that fulness, which equals His command:

"If I should distribute all my goods to feed the poor, and if I should deliver my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me nothing."

And who gave you the surety of these words? Do you not say with St. Augustine (Doctor, 354-430):

"For my part I would not believe the Gospel were not I moved thereto by the authority of the Catholic Church."

And how then did the Catholic Church actually deliver this guarantee. Who spoke or wrote this truth. The Church exists undoubtedly, but how does it speak God’s truths? Do all the members of a Council, inspired by the Holy Spirit, all speak out and declare a truth? Does one of them do it? What is the mechanism which is described by the words: THE CHURCH TEACHES? Where or in whom is the Church’s ‘mouth’? Do you not see, O man, that there has to be a spokesman to be the Church’s ‘mouth’, and to speak forth infallibly all those truths essential for men to save their souls, enter Heaven and escape hell? And thus, to do this, Our Divine Redeemer, bounteous God and true Man, provided for us, the Bishop of Rome, St. Peter in the first instance, and his legitimate successors until time will be no more.

Finally, this scheme of ONE RELIGION FOR ALL MEN DID NOT ORIGINATE IN THE FERTILE MIND OF SOME IDLE DREAMER. ITS SOURCE IS EMPHATICALLY IN THE LAW: "go, teach ALL nations." Here is a Divine commission, given to the ONE Church which Christ had founded; which, according to the Apostle, was built precisely and equipped exactly for this task, framed together, compacted, and fitly joined together by joints and bands, "one body and one spirit; as you are called in one hope of your calling. One Lord, one faith, one Baptism"; which was therefore endowed with the ability to PRESERVE ITS UNITY in the BONDS OF FAITH, to spread out to ALL men and gather them into the ONE fold; to which if men hearken not, they are to be regarded as heathens and publicans. The command reads: "teach not what You feel like teaching, what might suit You, what might suit the men to whom You speak; BUT "ALL THINGS WHATSOEVER I HAVE COMMANDED YOU." That Christ who is God has sent a Church on such a mission; is clear. Where is that Church? Or rather, where is this perfect society which claims such a great purpose? Who else but the Church known as the One, Holy and Apostolic Catholic, has ever dared to assume such an enormous responsibility? Which society can prove its holiness by the stamp of God, miracles?

And moreover, this One and Only Church of God HAS ALWAYS HAD AND STILL HAS FULL UNITY. Let us note this unity resides in FAITH AND NOT NECESSARILY IN CHARITY!

To speak of the Church as the Body of Christ is to proclaim Her unity, Her undividedness. "We, being many, are ONE body in Christ." This oneness was not merely a unity of ideals and aspirations, as so many apparently claim and long for. Neither was it that union in charity for which our Lord prayed for at the Last Supper:

"That they all may be one, as thou, Father, in me, and I in thee; that they also may be one in us."

Many mistake this prayer of Christ for the unity of His One and only Church to be attained at some date. But this is a major error, and all the ‘experts, the Saints and Saintly Doctors have always explained this. On the contrary, this was a prayer that we have charity. But, necessary as this is that we be wholly united to Him; UNITY DID NOT, AND DOES NOT, RESIDE IN THIS, but rather was it and is in a SURRENDER TO THE COMPLETE MIND OF CHRIST. The One and Only Church of God WAS ALWAYS ONE, IS ALWAYS ONE, AND WILL BE ALWAYS ONE, because Her most sacred rite was and is one,' because Her Lord, Her Faith, Her Baptism was one and is ONE.

The Church HAS ALWAYS worshipped One God and Father of all; hence HER UNITY WAS NOT A PROSPECT SET BEFORE HER TO BE REALISED IN THE REMOTE FUTURE ; IT WAS A MARK OF HER CONSTITUTION FROM THE BEGINNING. The UNITY PROMISED BY CHRIST WAS THAT PROPER TO THE SOCIETY OF HIS FOLLOWERS, TO BE MANIFESTED VISIBLY IN THE UNANIMOUS PROFESSION OF ONE FAITH, THE PERFORMANCE OF ONE ACT OF WORSHIP, THE ACCEPTANCE OF ONE SYSTEM OF GOVERNMENT.

Both the divine and human elements in the Church alike guarantee Her unity. She comes from the Triune God, the ONE and the true, in WHOM DISUNION IS UNTHINKABLE, and She shares in a manner the oneness of the life of the Godhead. This life is given to us through grace, faith, hope and charity, created gifts arising from the ‘heart’ of the Blessed Trinity and raising us up to a SUPERNATURAL UNION with God. The unity of the human race, the whole of which God wills antecedently but not absolutely to be incorporated into the Mystical Body, demands a Church that is undoubtedly ONE AND UNDIVIDED, with ONE MEDIATOR OF HIM AND MEN

If this is not so, then we have a right to conclude that Christ must be counted with the prophets of falsehood, as great a falsehood as that seemingly being ‘wept’ and ‘prayed’ for around the world, that the wish of Christ, expressed in the words:

"That they all may be one"

is yet to be accomplished by the design of the Holy Spirit. While apparently not a few have now been ‘weeping’ and ‘praying’ noisily for some 40 years, and secretly before that, many have gone to their eternal reward but hearts remain cold, and the one thing which is necessary to come and belong to the ALWAYS UNITED, UNDIVIDED CHURCH OF GOD: Repent and believe the gospel, that there is but ONE LORD AND ONE FAITH, IS NOT DONE.

And why should this attitude appeal to the honest? Is it not the duty of every man who would be honest with himself to LOVE THE TRUTH and embrace it, and to never change in mind, heart, or outward expression towards it?

Thanks be to God for everything.

The Fence

There was a little boy with a bad temper. His father gave him a bag of nails
and told him that every time he lost his temper, to hammer a nail in the back
fence. The first day the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Then it
gradually dwindled down. He discovered it was easier to hold his temper than
to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn't
lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and the father suggested
that the boy now pull out one nail for each day that he was able to hold his
temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father
that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him
to the fence. He said, "You have done well, my son, but look at the holes in
the fence. The fence will never be the same. When you say things in anger,
they leave a scar just like this one. You can put a knife in a man and draw
it out. It won't matter how many times you say I'm sorry, the wound is still
there. A verbal wound is as bad as a physical one. Friends are a very rare
jewel, indeed. They make you smile and encourage you to succeed. They lend an
ear, they share a word of praise, and they always want to open their hearts
to us.

The Bible reading for the 29th of Tuba, February 6th, is:
1 "Then the kingdom of heaven shall be likened to ten virgins who took their
lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom. 2 Now five of them were wise, and
five were foolish. 3 Those who were foolish took their lamps and took no oil
with them, 4 but the wise took oil in their vessels with their lamps. 5 But
while the bridegroom was delayed, they all slumbered and slept. 6 And at
midnight a cry was heard: 'Behold, the bridegroom is coming; go out to meet
him!' 7 Then all those virgins arose and trimmed their lamps. 8 And the
foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil, for our lamps are going
out.' 9 But the wise answered, saying, 'No, lest there should not be enough
for us and you; but go rather to those who sell, and buy for yourselves.' 10
And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came, and those who were ready
went in with him to the wedding; and the door was shut. 11 Afterward the
other virgins came also, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open to us!' 12 But he answered
and said, 'Assuredly, I say to you, I do not know you.' 13 Watch therefore,
for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming.

Dear Lord Jesus,

As you reached out to touch so many that were ill or
hurting and healed their infimities and sufferings,
reach out now and touch those that have asked for
prayers especially Adrian. That the light of your

(2 Tim 1:8-9)  So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed
of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power
of God, who has saved us and called us to a holy life--not because of
anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace
was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time....

 FROM THE MAILBAG

EDITOR'S NOTE: E-mails of encouragement for Father Weslin (see article
 below) can be sent to
mquinn03@... where they will be gathered
by a friend for delivery to him.  Though we are not all called to be on the
"front lines" in this spiritual war, we can all contribute to the effort as
 the Lord provides the opportunity.

Please join me in sending this dedicated servant of the Lord an email
encouraging him and offering to remember him in our daily prayers.

 VIA
mquinn03@...: If someone sends me an email I do not send
it to Father's jail address for the sender. I do let Father know who has
written if I can talk with him on the phone. He is limited to 5-10 minutes
of telephone calls daily which makes conversations very limited.  I have
printed out all the emails sent to him though and put them in a envelope
for him to read on his release day, April 3. You cannot bring any written
material into the visiting rooms with him and I respect emailer's privacy
 rights.

He's doing good. Counting the days til April 3rd.

 newsletter regarding Fr. Weslin.

 FATHER WESLIN SENT TO JAIL

Federal Judge Richard Arcara sentenced Father Norman Weslin (founder of the
Lambs for Christ), to 5 months in federal prison. His Crime: kneeling in
silent prayer on a public sidewalk outside an abortion mill. In Judge
Arcara'a opinion, 4 hours of public prayer deserved 5 months in federal
prison. Father voluntarily surrendered on Nov. 5th.

Meanwhile New York State's 2nd Circuit Court of Appeals rulled that Judge
 Arcara's Buffer Zone is unconstitutional.

Father thanks everyone for your prayers and says, "If Jesus wants one of
His priests in prison while the evil is going on... That's what I want". Father
asks for your continued participation in public prayer at America's killing
centers and sends you his love and blessing on the Christ Child's Birthday!

Wouldn't you think that a merciful judge and Attorney General, Elliot
Spitzer, who brought this complaint would have the humility to admit error,
apologize and request Father's immediate release based on time served or at
least untill his appeal is heard?

If not, we must recognize Father Weslin's trial sentencing and
incarcerations as an example of raw judicial power and sheer political
persecution. Father's current prison assignment is: picking up cigarette
butts! He was not allowed to bring his Rosary and Liturgy of the Hours
 prayerbook into prison.

The New York Lambs of Christ ask those who can, to write to the following
address for immediate release of Father.

Father Norman U. Weslin, O. S.  Friend of the Unborn Prisoner # 08149-055,
Unit F04, #114 Federal Correctional Institution McKean, P.O. Box 8000
 Bradford, PA 16701

The Lambs of Christ newsletter address is: PO Box 20203, Rochester, NY
 14602-0203

Ladder of Divine Ascent excerpt: Step 4- "On blessed and ever-memorable
 obedience"

 2. But let us not fail, if you agree, to describe clearly in our treatise
the weapons of these brave warriors: how they hold the shield of faith in
God and their trainer, and with it they ward off, so to speak, every thought
of unbelief and change of place; how they constantly raise the drawn sword
of the Spirit and slay every wish of their own that approaches them; how,
clad in the armour of meekness and patience, they avert every insult and
injury and missile. And for a helmet of salvation they have their superior's
protection through prayer. And they do not stand with their feet together,
for one is stretched out in service and the other is immovable in prayer.
