In the Name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
Assalamu Alaikum wa Rahmatu Allah wa Barakatoh

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Islam,

I pray that my e-mail will reach all of you whilst you're all in the best of health and strongest of imaan.  Ameen.

Since we didn't get many responses as to how you'd like us to proceed with the lessons, we will inshaaAllah stick to our original plan.  Jazakom Allah khair to the few who did e-mail us, and inshaaAllah your suggestions will be taken into consideration.  In fact, some asked that we use words from short surah's.  We will start with that today inshaaAllah...and we'll start with an easy one.

Today's Lesson Plan...

* Announcements!

1.  We will introduce a new word from a short surah

2.  We will apply the same rules applied to the first word to get you inshaaAllah to understand them better (namely noun, plural, how to define the world...etc.)

3.  We will tell you a little story -- off track a bit...but it's related (so as not to make the lesson too boring!)

Announcements:

* The site that will contain a compilation of all the grammar rules we learn along the way is up and running.  There you will find all the rules we've learned so far.  Everytime we learn something new, we will add it there.  InshaaAllah...from now on, you will find this site at the bottom of every e-mail for easy reference.  The site is:

Bismillah we begin the second lesson:

Word of the Day:
From Surat al-Feel [105]

 Ýíá
Feel

Feel is  ÇÓã  äßÑ  Ism Nakir (abstract noun) meaning "Elephant".

The ÌãÚ Jam3 (plural) is:

 ÝöíóáÉ
Fi-ya-lah

In order to make the ÇÓã Ism (nounãÚÑÝ  Mo3ar-raf (defined), add "Çá" (al = the), as in the following Quraanic verse:

**Ãóáóãú ÊóÑó ßóíúÝó ÝóÚóáó ÑóÈøõßó ÈöÃóÕúÍóÇÈö ÇáúÝöíáö
Have you (O Muhammad ()) not seen how your Lord dealt with the Owners of the Elephant? [The elephant army which came from Yemen under the command of Abrahah Al-Ashram intending to destroy the Ka'bah at Makkah].  [Surat al-Feel  105:1]

** NOTE:  When you add "Çá" to the word Feel, it is prnounced al-Feel (but in the ayah, considering the rules of tajweed, the word before it has an effect on it, so it's said "as7aabil Feel" NOT "as7aab al-Feel"(The rule for that is to be explained in future lessons inshaaAllah).

Aside...

So, why did they say al-Feel (THE ELEPHANT)?

Well, as you may or may not already know, Abrahah al-Ashram (also known as Abrahah al-Habashyy) prepared an army of fi-ya-lah that came from Yemen, intending to destroy the Ka'bah in Makkah.

Why?

A grand church was built in Yemen as an honour for an-Najaashy (the King of al-Habashah), who was a Christian.  Abrahah wanted people to do their pilgrimage at this church, but people headed for Makkah -- as the love of the Ka'bah filled their hearts!  By destroying it, he figured people would start coming to the grand church "al-Qulays".

So who's AL-FEEL?

AL-FEEL (The Elephant) refers to the largest FEEL out of all the fi-ya-lah the fleet of Abrahah had.  His name was "Mahmood" (so FEEL here is defined because it refers to a certain defined FEEL).  Mahmood was a huge FEEL and he was in the lead to destroy the Ka'bah.  However, when they came close, a prisoner who was with Abrahah's fleet (who opposed them as they came close to Makkah) was able to escape, and he hung on Mahmood's ear and yelled "Ubruk Mahmood fa innaho baytullah al-3atheem" (Sit down, Mahmood, for it is the house of Allah the Great!).  Mahmood, AL-FEEL, by the mercy of Allah sat down and refused to move towards the Ka'bah.  If they directed him to any other direction, he'd stand and walk...but towards the Ka'bah...he refused.  The story continues on as described in the Quraan...the birds come and throw stones on all of Abrahah's army...leading to their destruction.

Hope you enjoyed and learned something!

** I've translated the above from the lecture of Dr. Tareq Sweedan on the Seerah of the Prophet - salla Allaho 3alaihi wa sallam.

So now, everytime you read or hear the word Ýíá you'll know what it means!

PLEASE PLEASE e-mail me with suggestions, complaints, comments, questions...anything!  Your feed-back is of extreme importance to us.

May Allah bless you all.  Ameen.

Till the next lesson...
I'll leave you all in the protection of Allah ta'aalaa.

Wassalamu Alaikum.
A Muslimah
