Lynn has checked and it works, at least for him. you get a bit of the previous programme to start.

Available until the 26th

So issues of it not working are down to software I guess.

It is very much worth a listen

There is a BBC Radio 3 programme due to air on the 19th at 21:30 GMT about Amateur Radio and Space

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01pyfhm

I believe people outside the UK are able to listen to it.

I just tested t/w and I get a bunch of weather packets, including
positionless packets. A negative filter should make them all go
away...

If you want the NWS weather and weather obects, then don't put the n
into the filter.

That was a really good listen!  Thanks for the link Steve.  I was concerned at the start because it was "on hold" music.  But at the end of that piece, the announcer came on and said it was time to start "Between the Ears", and all was good.

I know my thrill at first copying APRS from the ISS, and hearing my first digipeat off the ISS.  Eavesdropping on ISS school contacts is always fun, when they happen to be in one of my passes.  I can only image listening to the suit-to-suit on the moon, and/or hearing the first ever satellite going beep-beep-beep.

And speaking of space operations, I got an e-mail that the ISS Plasma Shadow Beacon experiment is going to happen again in two weeks (Feb 1-3).  See http://knts.tsniimash.ru/Shadow/en/Default.aspx for details.  But since this uses UISS (at least at the master transmitting station), let's take discussion of it over to the APRSIS32cafe.

There is a BBC Radio 3 programme due to air on the 19th at 21:30 GMT about Amateur Radio and Space

http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b01pyfhm

I believe people outside the UK are able to listen to it.

For me it does not maybe I need to check my whole filter have done the
CTRL-G
Thought someone might have done it save me reinventing the wheel.
I still get them all turning up at 0,0
0,0 is not the issue just them being there
Will have a play

I just tested t/w and I get a bunch of weather packets, including

I think I got some posts from the "cafe" early on. Have not seen any recently. Is it a separate group, or has it just been quiet lately? Some of those were fun, even though not directly related to APRSIS32

Hi all,

Does APRSIS32 implement message groups that allow a one to some conversation to
take place?

By this I mean to provide similar functionality to the way Kenwood hardware
implements "Message Group Codes"?

eg everyone who adds the address 'SAR' to the list would see/be notified of
those messages addressed to 'SAR'.

NB, I don't mean 'altnets' and ANSERV / CQSERV is not a solution I can use as it
needs to be a 'radio only' solution that has no central infrastructure.

As an aside, what is the full list of one to all message addresses APRSIS32
responds to? (I have figured out CQ, QST & ALL; is there more?)

Thank you for the responses in advance
David

Just as Kenwood has a special "message group" that they field in addition to the standards that you mention below, APRSISCE/32 will also pick up messages addressed to APRSIS-CE and APRSIS-32.

While there isn't a menu way to configure it yet, APRSISCE/32 does support the definition of Message Group's in the XML configuration file.  Any message received that matches a configured MessageGroup will be pulled into the notification area, but will not be ack'd.  I believe this is the functionality that you're looking for?  To configure a MessageGroup, follow the instructions at http://aprsisce.wikidot.com/doc:editing-xml-configuration and add a line similar to the following, but of course with your own desired group.  There should be a <!-- MessageGroup --> comment in your XML file which provides an anchor point of where to put the new element(s).

<MessageGroup>SAR-1</MessageGroup>

Oh, and if you send a message to a configured MessageGroup, APRSISCE/32 should automatically NOT request an ack on that message.

APRSISCE/32 also has the beginning support for "Companion" callsigns that aren't exactly what you're looking for, but provide a unique bit of functionality.  A Companion (see Configure / Companions) will have position beacons generated for it based on it's own independant GeniusBeaconing configuration set as well as via it's own configurable path.  Messages addressed for Companion Calls will also be picked up and acked, if you check the Messages box in the Companion configuration.  If  you prefer, Companion calls may also beacon as an Object rather than a station, but said object will still GeniusBeacon along with the main station.

I doubt you'll have to worry. :) No records exist showing a formed hurricane
ever crossing the equator. According to a couple articles from a professor of
meteorology[1] and track data from NOAA[2], there are forces that conspire to
prevent it.

During a search there was only one article from a Chicago Tribune[3]
meteorologist that mentioned a hurricane having crossed the equator, citing data
from NWS but the information about that particular storm was never given in the
article nor was a reference supplied. The only mention I can find from NWS/NOAA
is in a discussion about hurricane formation[4]. There it mentions one Typhoon
Vamei near Singapore that formed very near the equator and had circulation on
both sides but the official coordinates of the center of rotation didn't cross
the equator.

Hi Lynn,

Thank you for the detailed reply.  I haven't yet tested it but the way you describe the <MessageGroups> sounds exactly like the behaviour that I was looking for.

Companions sound like a great way to have a tactical call sign  and 2nd visual status on the map - something else to play with.

Thanks again,

It has been an interesting set of experiments this weekend. APRSISCE/32 has
been working very well and is quite intuitive! Both mobile stations and fixed
stations with and without RF support have been tested with good success.

The only downside has been the "kludgey" configuration I am using for mobile
operations:

- Garmin GPSMAP 60CSX GPS unit
- Garmin serial cable with prolific USB to serial adapter
- small HP laptop
-TNC-X
- FT-817ND

It works very well, but the passenger seat is a "rat's nest" of cabling, and
most of our GPS units are the 62stc type without a serial port, so we will need
some engineering on the mobile units.

Thanks very much for the support of the yahoo group, and thanks to the
APRSISCE/32 development team for such a solid product!

Tomorrow we will install an iGate in the EMA office (assuming the Kantronics
KPC3+ behaves!), and then we will work on mobile units.

As usual, moving environments is always exciting.

My next configuration in the EMA office uses a Kantronics KPC3+. I checked and
it seems to be in KISS mode, however, that can be changed.

I can not find a KPC3+ TNC port configuration.

I do see an AGW port configuration, but it is unclear how to connect it to the
AGWPE driver.

Thoughts?

The trick I've found with Kantronics TNC's is to lock them into KISS mode, and get them to stay that was across a power reset.

Here is the message string from when I was trying to get a 9612 to stay in KISS mode

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/aprsisce/message/8883

Once the TNC stays in KISS mode, the KISS configuration for APRSIS32 works great.

See aprsisce.wikidot.com/tnc-kpc-3

AGW is not necessary unless you've got a need to share access to the
KPC-3+ with other programs.

Just watch for the accumulated delay issue with a KPC-3 running in KISS mode.

You won't see the issue on your own station, but if you suddenly start
gating a lot more packets than usual, that's probably due to your
i-gate delaying packets and injecting them after the anti-dupe filters
have expired. Other stations will notice zig-zag patterns on their
tracks, or flagged raw packets on aprs.fi. The zig-zag is hard to find
on aprs.fi since Hessu does a bunch of filtering to try and hide the
issues caused by delayed packets.

We don't have access to the source code or development environment to
be able to determine the cause.

It's just a known issue.

See http://blog.aprs.fi/2011/03/kantronics-kpc3-considered-harmful.html for about the best description.  Make sure you check out the videos that show the reproduction and proof of the issue.

It is only known to affect KPC-3+ (the plus version) and only when running in KISS mode for an extended period of time where the time is shorter in areas of heavier traffic.  Personally, my money is on a circular buffer pointer race condition in the firmware whereby the head and tail pointers vs some counter is getting steadily out of sync causing received packets to sit in the buffer until a new packet "bumps" it out.  When the race condition is met, another packet ends up in the buffer, slowing increasing the delays until they become noticeable by exceeding the 30 second APRS-IS dupe detect window.

I plan to incorporate a "reset timer" in the upcoming port support of APRSISCE/32 that will automatically execute a port's <Close/OpenCmd>s on a timed basis.  It has been shown that simply dropping the KPC-3+ out of KISS mode and putting it back into KISS mode will eliminate the delays.  A power cycle on a KPC-3+ that comes up in KISS mode will, of course, also clear the buffering/delay issue.

(Group readers: You might want to start at the bottom and work upwards to get a context for this reply)

I reply faster to support questions in the APRSISCE Yahoo group because I'm in that "mode" of processing e-mail when I look at that in-box.  I check this e-mail box more often, but most of the time with less time to draft support responses.  I'm copying this response to the Yahoo group in keeping with my belief that "for every question asked by one, there's probably ten (or more) interested in the answer".

Currently the red box around FreqSpec objects with "issues" is not user configurable.  The intent is that local users will contact the owner of their local objects and encourage them to get fixed to current spec compliance.  What I see of the objects in your area are that they are non-TONE spec compliant.  And that means that they were never compliant to start with, but no-one was flagging such issues.

The Tone spec is Tnnn (wide) or tnnn (narrow) where the nnn is the tone frequency expressed as exactly three digits and no decimals per Bob's http://www.aprs.org/localinfo.html

Where Tnnn is the tone in Hz (without tenths)
  • T079 R45m -(Combines 79.7 Hz PL tone and Range (miles or Kilo)
  • T079 +060 -(Combines 79.7 Hz PL tone and +600 KHz offset
  • t079 R45m -(the lower case letter means narrowband modulation.
  • Toff R45k -(Tone is OFF (no PL or CTCSS) standard offset)

  • With more and more implementations of interpreting the frequency information in APRS-aware radios, it is more and more imperative that said information be fully spec compliant to be usable across the largest number of mobile platforms.

Lynn (D) - KJ4ERJ - Author of APRSISCE for Windows Mobile and Win32

PS.  I do have plans to expand on what I'll be calling "Highlights" and at that time the FreqSpec issue highlight should become user configurable.  It will also include Bob's original suggestions (they're not in aprs101.pdf) for station highlighting from http://www.aprs.org/symbols.html

Still no reply to yesterday's two emails I sent to you. One contained an attachment.  I now understand what the reason is for the red boxes around various objects generated by a beacon from digi's announcing repeater frequencies and other info...I can fix the ones I have control of, BUT how can I turn off that feature. I have no control over those that I don't own.

    Thanks.

Can you tell me the specific repeater callsign-SSIDs so that I can answer specifically what the issues are?

Bob's original page at http://www.aprs.org/info/freqspec.txt was also updated in May of 2012 and may provide you some additional things to think about as compared to his original Local Information Initiative pages that I suspect you originally followed.

I've been using and experimenting with your software APRSISCE/32 off and on now for months....can't find an answer to how to remove, or stop  the red boxes from showing around various repeater objects and other objects. When I set the repeater objects up many years ago I followed Bob's recommendations for sending out the frequency etc and not the call of the repeater. Example 147.060CT in Salem, CT.  How can I turn those red boxes off?

I am going directly to you as author of the program and not the yahoo group. I've asked questions in the past on other groups and get a sorted variety of answers and opinions and usually none are correct.

    Thanks in advance.

Helge DF8LS has created 6 video tutorials on setup and use of APRSISCE/32. Great if you understand German, but still useful if you don’t, Just watch and learn

Big thanks to Helge for the effort

Those of you in the aprsis32cafe will see we had a bit of banter in an email exchange

Hence the joke against ourselves at the bottom of the page

In the course of  sorting out the German video page I thought about test to speech and went of on a hunt.

I found some code which Lynn is able to include into the software with licence issues, it’s under an X11 licence, which is smilair to a GNU. But you just have to credit the authors, and not expose your own source code as well.

The code is designed to run under windows (says XP but hopefully 7 and 8) and windows CE, Lynn tested it on his phone earlier.

It comes with English (American Voice) but it is possible to build voice files with other languages, How hard that is I don’t know, (looking at Helge for German)

I think this would be handy for partially sighted/blind users, and of course in stituations where hitting a button, and hearing the message you just received would be good such as driving.

I have uploaded 4 wav files that Lynn created into the files section of the group, file names all begin KJ4ERJ and description of TTS. For people to listen to and comment on.

Obviously this is not going to happen in the short term, there is a lot more involved than just including the code.

For those interested the code and docs, links etc are here http://www.speech.cs.cmu.edu/flite/

My APRSIS32 (version 2012/05/25) is properly connected to a Timewave PK-96 TNC
    using a Windows XP PC.

When I hit the transmit button the PK-96 "STA" light blinks once, but no
    transmit.

    Everything described here is correct:
    http://aprsisce.wikidot.com/doc:transmitting

At the top left it says "Timewave OK", then "APRS-IS Down."

This was working properly when I tried it a year ago.

I've seen mention here of a passcode. What is this?

Can anyone shed some light on why I cannot get APRSIS to transmit?

    Thank you for your help.

I believe the "STA" light indicates that APRSISCE/32 is talking to the
PK-96. If PTT isn't keying, then I have to suspect a wiring issue
between the TNC and the radio.

Can you drive the TNC from a terminal emulator and ensure that the first
assumption of the referenced wiki page is actually correct?

    > With the basic assumption that your TNC/Radio configuration has

    > key the transmitter...

Enabling the Transmit and Port(Timewave) trace logs (see Enables / View
Logs / ... and click Enable in that window) and then hitting Transmit
    may provide additional information.

    Fodder wikified...

    http://aprsisce.wikidot.com/aprs-is-filters

I added the APRS-IS filters to the wiki, sorted in alphabetical order,
and then put some examples in a table below the filter descriptions.
There's lots of room to be able to add more description to the ones
that don't make as much sense.

It's hard to determine which ones need more description once you know
the how and why behind what they do.

If you see any that need more description, ask and we'll try to answer
then put that answer in the wiki.

If you have filter question to try and filter something specific, we
can try and figure it out, and then post it in the wiki for others to
    use as desired.
