Lynn? Anyone?

Our local ham radio group provided communications for the
Indianapolis 500 Festival Parade last Saturday. Our primary job is
shuttling parade participants from the first aid tents along the
route to the medical command tent using golf carts. Each of the golf
carts is driven by a ham who has APRS. I was the Net Control operator
for the golf carts and was running APRSIS/32 so I could see where
they were. I'd like to play back the log from that day to study the
golf cart movements and identify where we might have RF issues.

Thanks.

Sounds nice. But hopefully Lynn will get to adding the Kantronics TNC's to the
menu. I have been asking for along time. I think that they will be added pretty
soon. I think it is near the top of his list.

I will try your setup and see how it works. May save me some real headaches
until the config is added to Aprsisce.

Hi Bob,

There is no playback function I am aware of. If you can get them to GPX then you can put them on your map. If you can't make a GPX, send them to me and I probably can.

Best regards,
Fred, N7FMH

APRSISCE/32 does not currently have any ability to play back log
files. In fact, I doubt if any of the particular logs would have
exactly what you're after.

That said, if you had done a Save Track on the particular stations of
interest, then you'd be able to load the resulting *.GPX files to see
their individual tracks later.

The *.PKT file is the output from Enables / Ports / Log All and contains
the raw packets received by any RF port, in pure time sequence, and no
APRS-IS received packets.

PS. Sorry for the delay in answering, but I'm on vacation and only

That "error" may be normal.  If you hook up a terminal emulator, can you see packets being received by the TS-2000?  If not, then you need to get it decoding before you'll have any joy with APRSISCE/32.  If you CAN see packets being decoded, then watch it for a while to determine the approximate rate at which they are received.  Knowing that, then fire up APRSISCE/32 and watch your trace log for at least twice that long and you should see packets coming through.  Make sure the <YourPortName> log is enabled, or the packets may not be shown.

Lynn (D) - KJ4ERJ - Author of APRSISCE for Windows Mobile and Win32

PS.  The "error" indicates that the final RESTART command is not expecting an echo of the command which APRSISCE/32 receives after having switched internally to KISS mode which then complains about the "missing leading <C0>", a non-fatal issue which should go away when the TS-2000 decodes a real packet and sends it to APRSISCE/32 in a KISS wrapper.

WOW, quick reply – Thanks.

I started hyperterminal and apparently the TS-2000 is not decoding any packets – nothing seen and lots of audible “traffic”.  I shut down aprsis before starting hyperterminal, do I need to re-initialize the TS-2000 with any KISS setup commands from hyperterminal?

Got it, had to power cycle the TS-2000 and start over – working now.  Thanks for the help!

I agree, a history file automatically saved for later replay would be a great
addition. While most authors stress that APRS is 'real time'. sometimes you
aren't paying attention when something happens. Turining on a log function in
advance is advised. But then, all you have is a bunch of chaff when you 'read'
but not display it in a replay.

This file playback feature is one of the better user features of the APRS Dos
version, and allowed an APRS user to replay periodically automatically saved
*.hst files to see what happened that day in the APRS world, or to demonstrate
to other APRS users how their coverage of a special event, parade, or WX event
played out.

I'll see if I have a syntax text sample from my DOS files to add:

This is an airplane only file that I copied one day from a 'everything .hst'
files to replay for a demonstration of DOS, so you may compare to the
APRSIS32.gpx format that a track is saved, which may be better suited to the
portables.
See the TAPR APRS DOS files for more *.hst files.

Am using a TS-2000, but don't use KISS!
Use the TM-D700 setup for APRSIS32, as the TS-2000 has the same built in TNC
modem.
9600 N 8 1 for the comm port works best..

Regarding that '*.pkt' file, one of these days I am going to copy one and try
and replay it in APRS Dos.

I know nothing about the TS-2000, so I really can't help you with the configuration menus, but I do know that you need to be decoding stuff before APRSISCE/32 will work.

Even if the TS-2000 was in KISS mode, you'd see non-printable headers, but fully readable payloads from decoded packets, so I suggest working towards that with a terminal emulator and once you see packets in SOME form coming through, close the terminal emulator and fire up APRSISCE/32 and you should be good to go.

Lynn (D) - KJ4ERJ - Author of APRSISCE for Windows Mobile and Win32

PS.  On the timing, you just got lucky!  I was doing one of my vacation-style e-mail passes just after your message came in.

Ok, Frequency Monitor is what I have been searching for documentation on, and
didn't understand what was going on my APRSIS32 screen.

Now, there are two area digipeaters sending two different local repeater
frequencies for the mobile APRS passerby. A little red square surrounds both the
separate antenna symbols.

One is 146.955RR and when selected in the program has something like 'bad case'
(Mhz vice MHz?)

Another W9MKS-3 has 'no MHz' but MHz is there with no space after the last digit
(147.120MHz).

Thirdly, my own mobile Status comment beacon on KC6VVT-14 using an old TM-D700A
without the autofrequency changer option of the later TM-D710 has 'listening
146.52/446.0 or local repeater' that also gets tagged with the red square. While
this may be clear to the mobile packet reader, what I really would like is to be
called on the APRS Alert frequency of 144.390 MHz Simplex with 100.0 Hz PL.

What is the best syntax to use that conveys that I am using that APRS Alert
while mobile, and call me there, and also try or a calling frequency for FM?

Over?

If/when APRSISCE/32 supports file playback, it'll almost assuredly be
based on a raw packet dump, no special formatting required.

Currently, you CAN save tracks as standard GPX files which are then
viewable either in APRSISCE/32 (latest version) or any other GPX file
viewer which makes them a much more portable format.

Maybe something that saves all !shriek!ed stations' tracks into a single
GPX file would assist in being able to see the total event after the fact?

Or is it more important to see it playing out in real (or double or
triple) time as the event unfolded?

I'm trying to understand just what you plan to DO with such log files.

On purpose or by accident? Remember, you should only edit the
configuration file when APRSISCE/32 is closed or you'll lose your
changes. Also, if you're talking WinMo, I have issues with backups on
my sync machine touching an old version of the file and then synching it
as "new" over to my phone causing unexpected reversions.

And for now, the development and general release are the SAME version
until I get back home and get into development again.

Thx, will have to try the other mode…got KISS working by resetting the TS-2000 and starting over!

Am using a TS-2000, but don't use KISS!
Use the TM-D700 setup for APRSIS32, as the TS-2000 has the same built in TNC modem.
9600 N 8 1 for the comm port works best..

The little red square indicates that APRSISCE/32 has detected some Issue
with the station's transmitted frequency syntax.

> One is 146.955RR and when selected in the program has something like 'bad
case' (Mhz vice MHz?)

146.955RR says "146.955Mhz" at the start of the comment. The FTM-350
requires MHz (note the capital H) in order to activate the QTY/Tune
function. Hence the "*MHzCase*" issue displayed by APRSISCE/32. In
addition, they are using a non-standard offset and PL in the comment. A
standard-compliant specification would replace the "146.955Mhz (
-600Khz, 103.5 PL)" with the (much shorter) following (T103 is Wide FM,
t103 would be Narrow FM):

146.955MHz T103 -060

> Another W9MKS-3 has 'no MHz' but MHz is there with no space after the last
digit (147.120MHz).

W9MKS-3 has "147.12 P T013"... in their comment and APRSISCE/32 displays
"*NoMHz*" as an issue because there is no MHz in the beacon comment.
The Freq: 147.120MHz that is displayed is generated by APRSISCE/32 and
it's "loose" parser gleaning for anything that might be a frequency.
While I don't know what the P is in the comment, a standards-compliant
comment would be:

147.120MHz T103

And I personally recommend including the offset, even if it is
considered "standard" for the local area. For instance, I have no idea
if it would be +060 or -060 for entering into my non-localized,
non-standard-offset-supporting UV-3R in order to use this repeater.

> Thirdly, my own mobile Status comment beacon on KC6VVT-14 using an old
TM-D700A without the autofrequency changer option of the later TM-D710 has
'listening 146.52/446.0 or local repeater' that also gets tagged with the red
square. While this may be clear to the mobile packet reader, what I really would
like is to be called on the APRS Alert frequency of 144.390 MHz Simplex with
100.0 Hz PL.

Your comment gives no indication of "Voice Alert" so there's no way
someone that receives it on a non-voice-alert rig would have any clue to
do what you'd prefer. And if you don't want to be flagged with a red
square, just make your comment "Local repeater or 146.52/446.0" and the
frequency parser won't even detect the frequency at the start. (At
least, not until I start sniffing entire comments for anything that
smells like a frequency spec, but I probably won't flag those as issues
because they don't even remotely appear to be trying to be standard
which has the frequency listed first).

> What is the best syntax to use that conveys that I am using that APRS Alert
while mobile, and call me there, and also try or a calling frequency for FM?

AFAIK, there is no suggested standard syntax for flagging voice alert.
If someone is using it, they expect calls from others that are listening
for it. It's only your "really would like is" qualifier that would even
suggest that you might want to put it in the text. If I were in your
position, I'd probably just make my comment something like "146.520MHz
or 446.0 or local repeater" and keep your tone on 144.390. It doesn't
express your preference, but doesn't it make more sense for people to
just call you on 146.520 straight away instead of calling on 144.390
just to arrange a frequency change? The "146.520MHz" will satisfy the
FTM-350 requirement (and Kenwoods can use it to) and the "or" will stop
the frequency parser(s) from generating any complaints about the
additional frequency coming later.

If you're getting pixelation, then that's APRSISCE/32 trying to make do with the maps in the local cache and for some reason your tile server isn't giving you new tiles.  Bring up the OSM Trace Log (Enables / View Logs / OSM) and maybe enable it to see what sort of error messages you might be seeing.

If you double-click an empty space on the map, what does it say after "Fetched:"?  Is there an increasing number in (nnnn Failed)?

Internet Access and the Fetcher are both turned on.

The detail available in the maps is solely a function of how much detail has been loaded into the OpenStreetMap.org database.  If you use the SlippyMap at http://www.openstreetmap.org you should see nearly the same map as presented within APRSISCE/32.  Unless, of course, you've turned off Internet Access or the OSM Tile Fetcher under Enables.

I'm glad that I questioned "pale" maps the other day, as your reply has obviously helped several other people. However, even after reading the wiki, I'm still not clear how CE retrieves maps of "new" areas, ie, the maptile of my home location can be zoomed in to individual-building detail, but (for instance) the current Torch location has very much lower detail. Even after playing with Map and Tile options I still don't seem able to retrieve the higher-detail tiles?

I don't know about the equipment, but AFAIK, APRS implements pretty much
the basic information you'd use for plotting a DF exercise on paper.

No, I'm not currently interfacing with any particular DF hardware or
software. The current implementation requires the operator to read
their DF instruments (or estimate with a hand-held Yagi) and enter the
data into APRSISCE/32.

Gee, if you had ever used DOS version, seeing it done would be slicker than me
trying to paint a word picture of the process.
And you did nail it with the slow/medium/fast playback that is available there,
so I think you are putting me on.
Ok, what would I do with it first.
I come in out of the garden, and there may be off screen tracks of a balloon, or
airplanes going to OshKosh, or hams going to Dayton, passerby mobiles, or an
Alert from the County EOC. or APRS radio equipped local hospitals. This may have
happened while I was away from my APRSIS32 terminal, with no trace of the event
on screen!
I can replay APRS DOS, with several files with an X amount of packets
automatically saved in a DOS *.hst file that are date and time stamped in real
packet format, and wow! I may have missed my APRS buddies passing by, and send
them a text in real time APRS messaging, and go on with life. Or send a "mea
culpa" to the local emergency coordinator who had the net shift from APRS mode
at the hospitals to dual band voice use on those TM-D7OO/710 radios there,
leaving no trace of their emergency APRS activation several hours earlier. Yes,
this has happened, and I could have helped the hospital comm net had I known
that Frontier had their long haul fiberoptic long distance cables dug up again.
Or reconstruct a simple log of when the alert went out on APRS.
Otherwise, APRSIS32 tracks erase after a set period of time, and is only useful
in real time, with no clues left for the intermittent user of what happened
earlier for the public service report.
Or an easy way to visually demonstrate when each hospital/EOC was activated by
the tell-tale APRS beacon it sent, time stamped. BTW, the APRS beacon used at
area hospitals are the FAA designation of their helo pads with the correct
location to home in on for Life-Flight, okay? And they don't show up on APRS.fi
usually, for that matter.

There ya go, and I have a test object file and can send these objects via RF or
APRS IS in my APRSIS32 home system in real time fairly quickly, so thanks for
that, Lynn.

Hope this above is okay, forgive me if not stated very well. I was a first line
blue collar foreman getting the equipment/technicians moving, and their net
stations up and running in good comms as a priority in the way back. It is
difficult for met to grasp that you need to know the "why" before you can "do"
something that will meet too few APRS users and network needs, hi.
Like Bob WB4APR, I believe APRS has a valid use in real time, and also as an
emergency communications tool with displayable map information to facilitate
that essential communication. Squack EMERGENCY status some time in APRS, and you
might hear from some interesting people.
If something is not readliy and simply usable, even in rudimentary form, with an
instinctive feel and understanding, it is gonna be problematic to the average
ham.
And if APRS can send record traffic for the inevitable ARES "how can we do this
better" post mortem analysis, better yet, as you have demonstrated yourself
with your famous digipeater barrage analysis of bad balloon paths!
APRS is only a hobby adjunct, after all, to the amateur radio service. Part of
that service is emcomm networks. If I had your abilities in programming, my APRS
version would be far worse than you have managed to date, that is for sure! And
I have yet to attempt taking APRSIS32 along mobile on ANY platform.

So don't worry about it. Only the RACES folks need replay for the cover their
butt exercise review, anyway.

Keep up the fine business, Lynn.

Thanks, Lee K5DAT
3.9MB for what are essentially just text commands to a KPC TNC? d:D This should
be interesting to see. Downloading att, and hope to review.
What version software embedded in your KPC 9612 PLUS? I have an older one I
would like to try out as a dual band APRS digipeater, and recall that this model
TNC needs a dual command separated by a slash on each command line.
Not good for a KPC-3 version, that is.

Thanks, Lynn, will try your suggestion on my mobile first. I have to have a
working area example first, before I can pass on that knowledge to others who
set this up based on an old example....

I'd suggest doing your own, but hold off on telling others for now.
There's some folks that are working up a complete compatibility test for
all APRS-compatible radios whose results we can use to help persuade
others as to the importance of absolute spec compliance for largest
possible usefulness of the information.

Say I created some objects, from a network of local or distant DF stations, and
entered the manual bearings, quality and estimated range/distance with each
object station. Signal strength is not a choice that I could guess at, but would
be nice to have.

Then I select a Multi-track map, and add the DF station objects.

Using the object editor, I select the DF button, opening the new menu for the
object to enter the updated bearing or azimuth data.

I expected a line to be drawn in the bearing azimuth from that DF object
station, and others, that would theoretically cross at the fox location. At
least it does in APRS Dos.

Nothing happened, no lines, no nothing. Is Manual DF broke now?

Shouldn't the APRSIS32 program visually display that line of bearing information
from each DF object?

Did I forget something else that needs to be enabled to get DF to work?

If you look for DF0, you will see one of mine. It ain't broke.
This is the APRS.FI view:

It doesn't show any lines but APRSISCE/32 does.

Have you enabled your DF objects for APRS-IS and specified an Interval?
If so, can you give me some of the object IDs and I'll look into it.

It requires range and quality. Doesn't show a line but a pie slice.

Needs to be enabled, but doesn't require a path, unless you want Lynn to see it.

Say I created some objects, from a network of local or distant DF stations, and entered the manual bearings, quality and estimated range/distance with each object station. Signal strength is not a choice that I could guess at, but would be nice to have.

Then I select a Multi-track map, and add the DF station objects.

Using the object editor, I select the DF button, opening the new menu for the object to enter the updated bearing or azimuth data.

I expected a line to be drawn in the bearing azimuth from that DF object station, and others, that would theoretically cross at the fox location. At least it does in APRS Dos.

Nothing happened, no lines, no nothing. Is Manual DF broke now?

Shouldn't the APRSIS32 program visually display that line of bearing information from each DF object?

Did I forget something else that needs to be enabled to get DF to work?

Part II
Note that there is a HFDF range limit of 512 mile maximum, which would seem to
me that it would limit a line drawn from a DF station to the fox, or target.
There is no way to edit that, and enter a known or approximate distance to
extend any line of bearing from the DF station to any crossing point of other DF
lines that should appear, or not.

As an example, I uploaded a *.pos file of FCC DF station, easily converted them
to objects by clicking on each (Very Well Done, Lynn) and entered a bearing.
Alas, the created DF station object refused to compute the reciprocal bearing to
ME when I centered the Multi-track map on the DF Station object and picked ME as
the target. Sigh.
