B. fusca are mouthbrooders, never heard of bubblenests with this species.

Do you have any other anabantids/callichthyids in this tank? If not,
it is possible you have a water quality problem. The location next to
the filter outlet leads me to believe you may be experiencing a
"protein skimmer effect" due to elevated levels of nitrogenous wastes
in the tank.

Hi Mark,

I am very interested in these fish......I have a new
tank not yet ready for fish but these have been in the
back of my mind the whole time.

Can you tell me some more about their requirements?
Are they as delicate as what the internet is telling
me? Any possible tank mates?

I will not be ready to take any for probably a few
weeks....hence my silence up to this point<g>.

Terry

Terry,
They seem to be hardier than the regular ones.  They're coming in right now, but I don't know how long they'll continue to be available.  As far as tankmates, I'd stick with slow-moving, very peaceful fish like the various diptail pencils.  Some of the smaller rasboras would probably work well with them, too, though they might try to eat fish like briggitae or the Microrasboras.  I actually have them in with Botia kubotai, which seems to work pretty well.
Thanks,
Mark

Hi Terry,

Are you doing a fishless cycle, or what is the reason your tank won't be
ready for a few weeks? Just curious, since if you have some already well
established tanks, you can easily go without the fishless cycling.

Hi Terry,

I do not believe in cycling tanks! NEVER EVER!!!

Alternatively, I use water from another tank 50/50 with aged fresh water.

From there I prefer to use a sponge filter that has been running in an old
tank, just swapping out the sponges.

Then here is the BIG KEY!!!

A HUGE chunk of Java moss, unrinsed just drop it in.
I do try to put the java moss near the greatest water flow to assure plenty
of oxygen.

The cycle is done.

Why risk a fish in a potentially unstable tank.

Plants are a fishes BEST friend. USE THEM OR LOOSE THEM!!

God Bless, Lee <><

Hi Jim,

I belong to the EIAA (eastern Iowa Aquarium Assoc.) The only remaining
charter member. :-(

Used to be a massive and very strong club but those days are long since
lost!! I sure do miss those days.

Strange, people just do not really care about their hobby the way they used
to. At least in this area.

A few to many cooks ruined the stew, as per the norm.

The greatness of this club lays deep in its constitution. No longer living
in its members.

I miss the strong days of FAAS. Pat, Dewey and Delores, Lyle, Tony.

Aquarium clubs all over are on the losing side of members. I belong
to 2 aquarium clubs, was a member of 2 others... I live in a boonie
country area where Ottawa Ontario, Montreal Quebec, Burlington Vermont
and Syracuse NY are all about the same distance away from me.
I have belonged to each one of those cities aquarium clubs at one time
or another. Presently i only call the Montreal Aquarium Society my
home club. Thats in a different country for me.. I live in Upstate NY,
mid adirondock Mountains... nothing near me. I travel 2.5 hours each
way to go to my club meetings.... i have watched the Burlington Vermont
club shrink to just a hand full of members.... watched the CNYAS club go
from 100 + members shrinking down to where if 20 ppl show up for a
meeting thats good. OVAS in Ottawa was always a small club but
maintains its membership... holding steady there and the MAS club in
Montreal is still going strong. We need to infuse new blood and young
ppl into our hobby, teach them the joys of our hobby, make them the
future of our hobby, WE need to frequent the Mom and Pop shops and
keep them alive so they dont lose to the big Chain stores.... How this
can be done, im not sure. I do know that THIS vehicle, the Internet
has made my hobby more available and also hurt it to a degree too... We
dont need the clubs anymore because so much info is on the net... we can
order fish from halfway across the country and dont quite need the local
shops. but.... When all the local access dies, this hobby will die as
well...

Sorry if i was rambling... but Im a strong advocate of supporting your
local clubs, local shops and supporting young and new ppl into this
hobby....WE need it.

Hi Jan,

You are right. The main reason I am not ready is that
I am off on vacation now for two weeks (starting
friday the 7th), not a good time to get some new and
rare fish...lol.

I am in the process of setting up a heavily planted 75
gallon tank. I just now have a few plants in there.
But after vacation - I need to do a big plant order
and get them in there. The tank will be up and
running while I am gone (I have a good pet sitter
coming to feed the other fish and critters) - I will
toss a couple of small fish in there before I leave so
it should be "cycled" when I get home.

Long story....thanks for listening. Got my eyes on
those gouramis!!! I had chocolate gouramis as a kid
and it has just been ages since I have seen any
around.

Terry

Amen, Brothah! :-)

I feel the same, and am in (and active in) my local A.S., and a couple
regional groups as well. I support local shops as best I can, and have even
been a major factor in getting two very good LFS built here that are NOT
chains and are doing their best to get more folks into the hobby.

I also think the net is hurting the hobby, but good shops can do well even
with all sorts of competition. Clubs on the other hand, are hurting badly.
Many shops think (and in many cases rightly so) that clubs take away some of
their business. They don't want to let their customers know clubs exist.
Clubs don't always help this situation. There is ignorance and ill will on
both sides. This is too bad, as if clubs die a great part of the hobby will
go along with it.

Hello,
I hope everyone had a good weekend.  The new fish are in.  There were a lot of substitutions from India.  The fish that came in look pretty good.  The Puntius gelius were about 2/3 doa, but the live ones look fantastic - go figure! - they won't be shipped out until at least 10/10 because I want to make sure they're alright.  The Badis bengalensis did turn out to be Dario dario, but of course there's only about 3 or 4 females (those have been on order for a couple of folks for months, so they're not available).  I'm going to email them and see if I can get a bag of females for the next shipment.  I'll let you know.  In the meantime, I marked the males really cheap, just to move them out.  If you have a tank of small fish, and don't want to breed them, they are spectacular.  The Puntius melanampyx are smaller than I would have expected, but they're in really good condition.  Both the Oreichthys look good.  The Chela look really good, too.  I'll try to get pics of the new fish posted by Tuesday or Wednesday.  I've taken pics of most of the new crowntail Bettas and will try to get them posted in the next couple of days, too.  They are really nice, with a lot of double ray caudals.  Please email me offlist to place orders.
Thank you,
Mark

Big difference between 2 inches and 2 cm.  They are not the easiest fish to keep, come from blackwater stream which means pH below 6, typically 4.5 however they are fine at pH 7.  They are a mouthbrooder and any information on albimarginata works for channoides.  Fry are very slow growing.  My recommendation is keeping a pair in a 10 to 20 gal tank with flowerpot caves and lots of plants and good filtration.  Frozen foods or live foods and if they get really skiddish put a towel in front of the tank to minimize intrusions.  They are also in low light conditions so good floating cover other then duckweed would not be bad either and lets not foget lots of java moss.

Hi All,

Just pulled in from Indiana MidWest Betta show, boy did they have
some nice fish there. It was my first IBC betta show and I had a lot
of fun. Picked up some nice fish at the auction as well.

I asked several people about the fusca's there and they agree, fusca's
do NOT bublenest. They thought they might actually be a different
fish that looks like a fusca, but they couldn't give me names.

How do I tell if I have a chemistry problem? What am I looking for?
There are only 4 fish in the tank (the 2 fusca's and 2 betta
splendens, in barracks) and a handful of plants. This is in one of
the 29 gal tanks cut in half, so it's about 12 gallons or so. I have
an aquaclear 20 filter on the one end and a sponge at the other end.
No gravel or sand.

Any suggestions? Karen

I agree Julie.  Our club in KC isn't as strong as it used to be, but it's better than it was 5 years ago.  I think it's all about the people.  We have nice supportive people.  The OKCAA club is the same.  They really have a lot of enthusiasm and nice people.  When we were struggling, it was due to a couple weenies in the group.  The stores that we work with are really nice and supportive, but some that won't work with us are again weenies!  They won't buy fish from hobbyists as a policy.  It amazes me that they stay in business.  Basic principles of good customer service really go a long way.  That's how we run our club and it's helping us get better every month.  Long live the ma and pa store that give you the service you need!!!!

Eric,
Since most of our imports come from southeast Asia and South America, there aren't too many livebearers available.  The one exception would be halfbeaks.  I'll start posting halfbeak availability here, and if there is an interest in them, I'll order them.  I expect to see Anableps available on occasion as well, and will certainly let everyone know when I can get them.

There is always a huge variety of tankraised livebearers available.  I've ordered plumetail platies, hifin swords, lyretail swords and redeye cherry swords and they haven't sold very well, so it's been my impression that there's not much demand out there for these species.  If there are folks out there that are interested in them, please let me know.  I can put together a pricelist of the tankraised livebearers fairly easily, and can post that for all of you to see.
Thank you,
Mark

I have been setting up tanks that way since the sixties, except we didn't have Java moss or sponge filters, and "cycling" only meant riding a two wheeler.  Substitute " box filter ready to be changed" and "lots of plants".  This was part of the advice given to me by an old German lady, Mrs. Rothrock.  It  always worked for me.

Hey Gang,
We'll be bringing in a shipment from Bangkok on either 10/09 or 10/16.  As part of that shipment, we should have a large number of true Siamese algae eaters, Crossocheilus siamensis.  Our regular prices start at $2.50 and go down to $1.75 each in a 25 lot.  If you prebook an order for this shipment, the pricing will be $!.25 each in a 25 lot ($31.25) or $1.00 each in a 50 lot ($50.00).  If you have lots of algae and need 100 of them, you can get them for $.90 each ($90.00).  Of course, you still have to pay for shipping from Bensalem to wherever you are.

There's a huge variety of discus available from Bangkok but the ones available from our shipper are all hormoned, so I don't typically order them.  If you're interested in them, please send me an email.

Thanks and have a great week,
Mark

Hi Y'all,

The LFS's in this area used to give 10-15% discount. Not a bad deal as
it encouraged the club members to visit. Plus club members are typically
more productive and have fish they bred locally. It all comes out in the
wash.

We also used to solicite mystery fish for free from the LFS's. They give us
the fish and we would promote them specifically at the meeting. Might give
it a try.
It is rather fun.
A brown bag with the donated fish.
10-15 clues as to what it is.
Best guess or first person to blurt out the right answer won the fish!
WARNING if you open your mouth and you did not want the fish in the first
place you still take it home. I once ended up with 2 EVIL red devils.
Killed more fish than I could count HAHA!!!

The LFS's in this area have mostly been ran out by Petco and Petsmart.
Laze Faire economy has its disadvantages! Oh Well. Beats the alternative.
The only strong LFS in the area has TERRIBLE customer service. They give
literally nickles for tank raised fish. Yeah I could see that on convicts,
but locality peacocks tropheus, and angels. He then turns around and sells
them at list prices. MAKES ME SICK! Half heartedly want to open a store
and show people what a fish store should be. ALAS, I have no MONEY. 4 kids
take care of that!!

The only thing I really like about petco is that they run great sales on
fish on occasion. I bought 6 m. pitteri last week for $6 total. did the
same with H. rosaceous. Besides lets me buy cheap fish for the kids to
kill at a later date. I still have not figured out what they do that
causes 25% of the fish I buy at petco to die. I can bring in half dead wild
fish from africa and not loose a one but a healthy looking petco cherry barb
to croak in a weak. :-(

God Bless, Lee <><
