Annapolis ICers,
I've always put a positive spin on my reports, but its becoming more
difficult when turnout is so poor on such a nice day. Here goes anyway.
Four boats showed up yesterday for some beautiful racing. The wind was a
bit unstable from the Northeast as we headed out under cloudy skies. The
initial two races were a "connect the puffs" races where the key was to
sail from puff to puff on the lifted tack. Things got tricky in the third
race with the wind dyng on the right. Three boats went left trying to stay
in the breeze. Greg Leonard and Bryan Church went right and were seemingly
far behind until the southerly started to fill. At that point, Greg was
looking pretty smart as he cruised to an easy win by 200 meters! Jon,
Celeste, and Jervis reset the course for the southerly, and the strategy
changed because the current was flooding pretty hard for the lighter winds.
This made going right towards shore the crucial tactic. Bryan Russell and
Jill Williamson took advantage of the current and straight-line speed to
pip Jesse and Erika at the post in Race 5. It was great to see Bryan and
Greg each win a race!
My wife will be attempting her first 100 mile ultra-marathon, and I will be
doing run support for her in Raleigh, NC. Therefore, I will not be sailing
on the last weekend. I want to especially thank my two wonderful crews
this year, Bonnie and Erika, who made the frostbite fun for me despite some
setbacks. I suppose if I were sailing the frostbite purely for the
competition, I would sail my Laser. But, for me, sailing an IC is so much
more than going around in circles as fast as you can. It's about the
commeraderie and friendships you develop with people on and off the water.
I hope this will continue.
There was a notice on the board for an IC for sale. The boat is owned by
Geoff Marshall, who sailed with us for one season years ago. The boat
number is 727 and is a Holby hull. It was in decent condition last I saw
it, although there was some damage when it rolled over during a storm. The
boat is VERY light - like 40 pounds. It has a dolly I think, and is
probably a very good buy at $1400. If I thought the fleet could deal
another boat, I'd suggest we consider buying it. But, under the
circumstances I don't think this is a good idea.

The qualifiers for the season are listed below. Six days are needed to
qualify thus far, and sailing next week will push that number to 7. Alex
can still win the series with a very god final day.
