From the DPW:

Dear Neighbors,

The DC Department of Public Works (DPW) announced today that regular trash and recycling collection service will resume Monday, December 21, while leaf collection remains suspended to allow crews to finish clearing snow in residential neighborhoods.

DPW officials say it may be difficult to collect from neighborhoods with narrow alleys, but ask residents to place trash and recycling in their normal collection location and to be patient.

“Obviously it will be a little easier to pick up from residents with front collection service but we will do our best to collect from the alleys as well,” said DPW Director William O. Howland, Jr., adding that due to the Christmas holiday, all Friday collections will slide to Saturday.

“We’re going to do the best we can but will err on the side of caution if an alley is determined too dangerous to navigate. Any trash and recycling that we can’t collect this week, will be picked up next week.”

Collection from public litter cans will resume Monday at 10:30pm.

Residents are reminded not to place their household waste in these receptacles.

From DDOT:

District snow crews are starting their 4th shift this morning.

Today, the work continues with a joint focus on both the major arteries and the residential streets.

The crews are following their deployment plan and will get into every neighborhood, but residents are asked to be patient.

The Snow Team’s standard and goal is to have the vast majority of the residential streets plowed within 24 hours now that the snow has stopped falling, no easy challenge considering this is one of the most significant storms in the city’s history.

If residents have any questions about snow clearing in their neighborhood, please call 311.

Staff in the DDOT Snow Command Center are monitoring the calls and dispatching crews.

You can also track the progress of the District’s snow plows at http://snowmap. dc.gov.

Mayor Fenty and Snow Team Directors Want People to Stay Home

Additional 15-20 inches Forecasted for DC

(Washington, DC)  Mayor Adrian M. Fenty along with District Department of Transportation Director Gabe Klein and Department of Public Works Director William O. Howland, Jr. are asking people to stay home unless it is absolutely necessary.  Snow started falling in the District around 8pm last night with nearly ten inches now on the ground.  The National Weather Service is forecasting an additional 12-15 inches for the District with heaviest snow falls between 7am and 6pm on Saturday.  The Mayor declared a snow emergency in the District of Columbia which went into effect at 7am Saturday morning.

“This storm system has only just begun and we have only seen the tip of the iceberg,” said Mayor Fenty.  “By the end of this the District could see over two feet of snow and it is imperative people stay off the roadways so our crews can get their work done.”

The District’s Snow Team (Department of Transportation and Department of Public Works) launched a full deployment of snow removal equipment and personnel to treat and clear all of the city’s major and residential streets.  District snow crews are expected to be clearing city streets well into Monday. Temperatures are expected to stay below freezing for most of Sunday and into Monday which means overnight refreezing will occur.

“District snow crews have been treating roadways since Thursday,” said DDOT Director Klein.  “We made shift changes this morning and crews are back on the roadways, but this is a significant amount of snow, more than the District has seen in years, and it is really important our crews have access to the streets.”

District officials are also asking residents to do some interim removal and treatments on sidewalks and steps and stairways.

“This snow is coming in very fast, over an inch an hour is expected during the day today,” said DPW Director Howland.  “Residents should take time during the day to start removing snow and treating sidewalks so they are not left with an overwhelming amount at the end of the storm and please remember to help your neighbors, especially those who are elderly or disabled.”

Residents are reminded to spread salt or kitty litter on their sidewalks, walkways and steps during the snow.  This should make it easier to shovel the snow after the storm ends.

Regional reports overnight of abandoned vehicles has brought concern to the area.  The District also wants to remind people that if they must be in their cars they should make sure they are prepared with enough gas in the gas tank, high levels of windshield washer fluid, and a safety kit in the car including blankets, water, and cell phone chargers, Drivers should try and move their broken down vehicle to the side of the road and put their emergency flashers on.  The storm is moving fast and near blizzard conditions are making it difficult to see other vehicles as site lines are limited.

DPW and DDOT remind visitors and residents to:

·   Not drive unless it is absolutely necessary.

·   If people must be in their vehicles remember that driving on ice is significantly different than driving on snow.

·   Use extreme caution and maintain safe speeds and distances from other vehicles.

·   Remember even a 4-wheel drive SUV does not perform well in ice and additional safety measure should be followed.

·   Be aware of road conditions, particularly black ice which can be deceptive in its appearance giving the driver a false sense of security on the road.

·   Watch for slippery bridge decks, even when the rest of the pavement is in good condition. Bridge decks will ice up sooner than the adjacent pavement.

·   Remember to keep a safe distance from emergency and snow vehicles and please use caution when attempting to pass a snowplow.  Give the drivers plenty of room to safely do their jobs.

·   Clear all the snow and ice from your vehicle's windows and lights - even the hood and roof - before driving.

·   Help your elderly or disabled neighbors remove snow from steps and sidewalks.

·   Clear catch basins and fire hydrants.

·   Please do not put snow in the street.  Put all cleared snow, from parked cars and sidewalks, in the "tree box," front yard, or between the curb and sidewalk.

·   Remember to clear vehicles of all snow and ice including the tops before traveling on roadways.

For more information about the District snow plan, visit ddot.dc.gov/snow <http://www.ddot.dc.gov/snow> .

WASA asked us to post the following:

DC WASA CANCELS PRECAUTIONARY BOIL WATER ADVISORY

December 9, 2009

The District of Columbia Water and Sewer Authority (DC WASA) has cancelled the precautionary boil water advisory that was issued on Monday, December 7, 2009.

DC WASA conducted comprehensive testing of the water system during the past 48 hours and results have confirmed the water is now safe to drink.

It is no longer necessary for District residents to boil tap water or to consume bottled water.

DC WASA experienced a loss of pressure around noon on Monday, December 07, 2009. This resulted in a drop of water pressure in the vicinity of 16th Street, Military Road, Piney Branch and Eastern Avenue, NW.

The Shepherd Park Neighborhood experienced a complete loss of water system pressure and resulted in issuing a precautionary boil water advisory in this area.

Upon notice of a loss of pressure in the system, DC WASA immediately restored pressure and flushed all water lines in the impacted area to minimize the risk of water quality problems.

“Although DC WASA found no indication of contamination in the system, the Authority proactively issued a precautionary boil water advisory while collecting water samples,” said General Manager George Hawkins. “This was done to ensure the safety of the drinking water for District residents during a 48-hour period of water quality testing.”

As an added precaution, DC WASA recommends discarding any food or ice that was prepared with water that was not boiled between 11:00 am Monday, December 7 and today, December 9 at 3:30 pm. In addition, any faucets or taps that have not been used during the water advisory should be flushed for 10 minutes.

Please share this information with anyone who drinks the water, especially those who may not have received this notice directly (for example, people in apartments, nursing homes, schools, and businesses).

You can do this by posting this notice in a public place or distributing copies by hand or mail.

Please stay current by visiting our web site at www.dcwasa.com.

Customers with questions about their water should call the DC WASA Water Quality Division at 202-612-3440 (Mon-Fri, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm).
Media and others who would like to learn more about this announcement should contact DC WASA Office of Public Affairs at 202-787-2200.

Free Resuable Bags in Your Neighborhood

As part of the District's "Skip the Bag, Save the River" campaign, the District Department of the Environment and CVS/pharmacy have teamed up to distribute reusable shopping bags. Beginning January 1, 2010, District businesses that sell food or alcohol must charge you 5 cents for every disposable paper or plastic carry-out bag. You can save a nickel by bringing your own.

to the

Tier II Environmental Impact Statement
Public Scoping Meeting

to discuss the proposed

Thursday, December 10, 2009
5:30 to 8:30 p.m.
Smithsonian Castle
Castle Commons
1000 Jefferson Drive S.W.

Washington, DC 20560

The Smithsonian Institution and the National Capital Planning Commission will host a combined public and agency scoping meeting on the proposed construction of the National Museum of African American History and Culture. The new museum will be built on the National Mall on a five-acre site at 14th Street and Constitution Avenue, N.W.
The meeting will solicit public comments for consideration in the Tier II Environmental Impact Statement (EIS), which will assess potential effects of constructing and operating the National Museum of African American History and Culture. Since the Tier I EIS was completed in summer 2008, an architectural team has been selected for the museum and pre-design studies, including a geotechnical report, have been completed. The Tier II EIS will study the effects of more refined concept alternatives that the architectural team will develop using the building parameters and design principles that came out of the Tier I EIS. The meeting also will cover the National Historic Preservation Act Section 106 process. Discussion topics will include land use and visitation, cultural resources, transportation, and natural resources. Representatives of the selected architectural team of Freelon Adjaye Bond/SmithGroup will be at the meeting.
