Description

Mailing list for American Muslims Intent on Learning and Activism (AMILA), based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Founded in 1992, AMILA is an American Muslim organization committed to spiritual enrichment, intellectual freedom, and community service. The acronym "AMILA" means "to work" or "to act" in Arabic. Founded by American-born and/or raised Muslims, AMILA was meant to supplement the activities of local mosques and Muslim organizations with events and projects of interest to the American Muslim community. AMILA emphasizes religious pluralism and respect between branches of Islam, equal roles for women in all phases of its operations, and concern for social justice.

Key AMILA projects include a monthly gathering held on the second Saturday of each month, an annual Ramadan Spiritual Retreat that is held for a few days at a remote location, and an "Eid for Everyone" gift drive that provides toys to local Muslim children during the Ramadan holiday season. AMILA's mailing list AMILAnet features vigorous, polite discussion and counts among its members Muslim leaders, newsmakers, intellectuals, and community activists.

AMILAnet is a "medium traffic" e-mail list consisting of 6-7 e-mails/day of news, commentaries and discussion affecting Muslims in America. If you would like to only hear about future AMILA activities, we have another AMILA AOL (Announcement Only List) that sends 2-3 e-mails/week. Please e-mail admin@amila.org with your request to subscribe to the AMILA AOL.

You can help AMILA continue its unique programs by getting involved. Volunteering requires less time commitment than an AMILA Steering Committee Position. Do consider lending a helping hand to AMILA. Please e-mail info@amila.org with some details on how you feel you can help AMILA.

Thank you,
AMILA
