You know Jeff.....my big "rising above the low
expectations of others" was having my son. Not even I
thought I could handle a baby by myself. I knew I
could "do the deed", even though most others assume I
can't but I came to the realization that I was
scared...more scared than I had ever been....more
scared than I had ever allowed myself to realize. But
I knew I couldn't give him up, especially after the
first time I felt him move inside me. That moment was
more magical than I ever thought it could be. Jamison
was born four years ago, my exboyfriend (Jamison's
father) left almost three years ago. Jamison is my
child, he calls me Mommy, even in front of strangers
:) It's the most wonderful feeling to know that just
by wheeling around our area I am showing people that
disabled women can have kids, just like "normal"
women. And more importantly, I have found that I WANT
to be a Mom...always have but never could admit it
until Jamison accidently showed me the way :)

Karen,

Bravo..I am so jealous....My current girlfriend has two sons and I keep
giving her the look to hurry up with mine :-) Honestly, I think disability
or not..the whole thing is a scary concept...Tell you what..my vote is that
in public... your kid is a way cool attention getter...Trade ya for the
beamer.. :-)

Hi Alina,
Tell you what...if you're serious about independence right now...I'd like to
ask you a few questions about your current living situation that you may or
may not want to post here..My email address is.. jreifens@...

For instance...

You're female and you're 19..Forget disability..that's a combination begging
for "protective parenting". If that's not the case..ok..If it is..that's ok
too..just requires a different approach..Get back to me either at my email
or this post..and we'll forge ahead from there...

Jeff

On that whole Center of Attention thing - here's a quote for any of you radical
AMCers out there - should you ever need it.. It was given to me by one of my
staff during a "discussion" we were having..Lucky for him... I loved it..

"You know..if my hands worked the way I want em to..right now..I'd be giving you
the finger!" :-)

Hi Jeff,
I'm very impressed. I don't any grand story like urs, but I do have one. 2
years ago this June I made a statement that in 5 years I want to run or own my
own bussiness. Not sure what type. I've felt I ran a boarding house, bed n
breakfast, counseling service, n taught budgeting ur money to all since I was
17. All for free too. Someone told me recently that I should become a
Motivational Speaker. I said what's that?? Others have told me I'm already
doing it n don't know it. U were motivational for me to keep trying to find
dream.
Thanks
Lorie
bricklin_forty <jreifens@...> wrote: I wanted to share a story and
see if anybody else can relate. It had
to be about 15 years ago come June that I got my first real job
(despite my voc. rehab counselor's sheltered workshop aspirations for
me) and went off that summer to a National Council on Independent
Living (NCIL) conference. I got on a small plane in Massena N.Y. and
got off a Jumbo Jet and into a cab in Washington D.C. Next thing you
know I'm at the door of the lobby of the Renissance Ramada Hotel.
Believe me - I was nervous before heading in. See, I'm a small town
boy and back at the tender age of 25 - I was still pretty freaky
about this thing called disability. Before I go on - know some things
about my youth: Where I came from - people I knew never mentioned my
disability. Thus, I was convinced that if I was to hang out with
other people with disabilities - the people I knew might begin to
suspect I had one too. Uh Huh! Second; despite the feeble attempts I
made to go through life in that kind of delusional camoflage -
without fail in any public gathering - I got to be the gawked at
center of attention.

O.K., anywise - this I tell you as lead in to my saying I was
terrified of walking through that door. Besides having learned to
eliminate the gawking by avoiding the crowds, I did not know what I
was getting into at that conference. A large part of my worry was
practical. I felt that in a moment, there was a good chance that the
people who took a chance and hired me back home in Massena - would
find out they had hired a guy to represent people with disabilities -
who literally didn't want to associate with them! (Heck - my almost
drank away Bachelor's Degree was in Criminal Justice. I only took the
Independent Living job to eat while waiting out the Civil Service
exams.) Anywise, there I was - about to be found out for the Uncle
Tom that I was - then said the heck with it (after all - I had lied
my way this far) and went in. BANG! Walking through those doors
changed my life!

Now don't be thinking I'm about to go on about having some kind of
religious experience here. Quite the contrary. This story is about
how life got better here on earth - when I came to find who I really
was. Picture this - All of a sudden I am in a veritable amphitheatre
that is that Hotel's lobby - looking at the hustle, bustle and
commotion of 500 people experiencing - literally - every kind of
disability you can imagine. People were crusing around in chairs,
pushing gurneys with a stick, using crutches, swinging canes,
following dogs, carrying IV poles - you name it - it was there! It
was....INCREDIBLE!

A couple of things happened to me that day - that really did change
me. The first and most amazing (as it was theretofore beyond my
experience at that point in my life) is that there I was in a huge
crowd of people - and nobody gave me a second look! Hello! The second
thing that happened - and this was definetly related to the first -
was that shortly after arriving in the midst of those 500 long time
activists with every type and severity of disability you can imagine -
I discovered that I was not the chosen one. I was not the one person
on this planet dealing with my level of disability - for whom
disability did not matter. I found this out because - of the 500
people at that conference - 499 of them were doing better than me
simply because they felt better about themselves and about who they
were - than I did!

You know - it's funny but - 15 years later - I'm the long timer now.
And I'm happy to be able to report that as of last week I got over
worrying I'd be found out about my job. (twenty minutes into that
conference I got over the disability association thing - since then
it's been my sheer incompetence I worry about :-) ) Anywise, now I
get to watch the new people come in to the Independent Living
Movement, knowing most are scared to death. I can't help but laugh
when I talk to some of them, particularly when they say they are
unsure they're in the right place. As far as I'm concerned - if you
want equality in this Country and have a disability or have a
personal stake in it - be part of the Movement. Otherwise....
well...I'm biased..Another time...

You know, when I started this story - I said I wanted to see if
anybody else on here with AMC could relate to something. I don't know
about you but quite often - I'm still the Center of Attention. It's
just that now - sometimes -that attention is not always just finger
pointing and stares. Sometimes it's applause after giving a speech or
heads turning while cruising in the hot rod. That's the kind of
attention that I like and I'd love to hear from all of you out there -
who get as big a kick as I do - from rising above the low expectation
of others.

Jeff

your story is great,...i also never thought i
was any different ..even when i was looked at or
teased .and never thought i should settle either .i
have never went to one of these gatherings your
talking of.but would .i did however work for free many
times to get a job ...id say ill work for aweek for
free ,and after that week i usually had the job ,with
pay.the problem is that i also made my amc worse by
trying to prove i was the same....and im not.now ive
raised three girls ..(my youngest graduates in 3years)
.but im lost as to what now .id love to work at
something that i enjoy and that wont hurt my body.id
also like to meet a life partner ..that wont (want a
normal girl).what is normal anyways???i dont think
theres such a thing. now im off track ..anyway theres
my two bits. brandie in ..Alaska
