Seems the WD9BGA/B beacon is back on the air... 144.297 MHz EN53ba in the Blue
Mounds area of Wisconsin (It had been off the air for a couple weeks).

Two blocks from Waukesha International Airport, beam heading just slightly N of
due W:

A loop antenna about 15 feet up will RX it with an RST like 329

A nice 7 element horizontal beam about 30-40 feet up with a DSP filter, will RX
it with an RST like 599... sounds clear as a code practice oscilator...

So, a handy tool for testing a 2m weak-signal station is back... Cool!

Hey everyone, was wondering if anyone is or has ever scanned any of Milwauk=

I'm with a group that has a police/fire/EMS scanning app for the iPhone and=

we'd like to have dedicated Milwaukee police and fire feeds. We want to fi=

I would agree with that, except when it's borne by the taxpayer
under the ruse of emcomm. I am curious how an infrastructure
of DStar nodes is inherently more reliable than the infrastructure
of the served agencies and will be equally useless when the "big
one" hits. Or not?

Dean -

A state-wide voice & data network can be a very useful capability for hams to
have irrespective of the technology implemented.

Like Georgia, Wisconsin has a public TV broadcasting network & transmitter
sites that cover the entire state.
It would be great if hams in Wisconsin could implement a network of ham
repeaters at each transmitting site.
As Georgia has proved it just takes the initiative by a few hams to make it
happen.

In regards to the technology one implements that is a separate decision from the
building of a state-wide network.

Personally I would have included in the Georgia plan a 2m or 70cm analog FM
repeater at each site in addition to
D-STAR to support legacy FM users. IRLP can run simultaneously on the
Linux-based D-STAR internet gateway servers at each site
and IRLP could be used to interconnect a set of FM repeaters as well.

In regards to D-STAR radio prices, a new IC-91AD 2m/70cm FM/D-STAR HT is about
$360 and
a new ID-880H 2m/70cm FM/D-STAR mobile is about $500. While these prices are
more expensive than
a basic analog FM radio a D-STAR does have capabilities & performance not
available with FM transceivers.

I'm not sure I share the same philosophy on that, Mark.

Looks to me that anyone wanting to be in ARES/RACES in Georgia is now going to
have to buy some really expensive radios, which are only available through a
single manufacturer.

An official announcement will be released in the next few days, but it can be
announced to the Amateur community that $165,000 in Federal funding has been
secured by Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) to complete the statewide
Georgia D-STAR network.  Equipment has already been ordered and is beginning to
arrive.

This is a project that began back in 2005 with a vision for Amateur Radio
emergency communications in Georgia. Georgia Public Broadcasting' s former
Director of Engineering Mark Fehlig, WA6NGC, seized an opportunity to install
two Amateur Radio antennas on each of nine tall television towers that provide
statewide Public Television coverage as a part of the required conversion to
Digital Television.  Fehlig designated Georgia ARES to control the use of these
facilities for emergency communications.

The next task was to determine what technology or mode would provide the best
use of these sites for emergency communications.  After considering many modes
and technologies including linked FM repeaters and packet.  About this time, the
D-STAR digital technology was emerging as a state of the art platofrm for voice
and data communications.  D-STAR allows flexible linking of repeaters and
provides simultaneous voice and low speed data along with high speed data with
Internet connectivity on 1.2 GHz.

2 meter, 440 and 1.2 GHz voice and data repeaters will be installed on each of
the nine television towers of Georgia Public Broadcasting (GPB). These nine
towers are strategically located to provide near statewide Public Television
coverage.  They will also provide similar Amateur Radio coverage from two
antennas located between 500 and 600 feet above ground and connected with 1 5/8"
transmission lines.  GPB will also provide indoor equipment space with backup
power at each site.  Connectivity on GPB's robust DS-3 data network will be
provided with Internet access to allow flexible linking of repeaters using the
D-STAR technology.  Two of the D-STAR repeaters are already in operation at
Pembroke, Georgia near Savannah and atop Stone Mountain serving the Atlanta
metro area.

The funding also provides 20 dual-band D-STAR radios for installation at EMA
offices around the state, a portable UHF D-STAR repeater for emergency
deployment, three 1.2 GHz D-STAR radios with laptops for sending data and photos
from field locations and a robust reflector to serve the Georgia network during
emergency conditions and available for general use during non-emergency times.
The complete Georgia D-STAR network should be in operation by early 2010.

The Georgia network will complement other D-STAR systems planned or in operation
in neighboring states of Alabama, Florida and South Carolina creating regional
capabilities in the Southeast. Weather systems approach Georgia either as severe
thunderstorms and tornadoes from the West or tropical systems from the Gulf or
the Atlantic.  Having flexible statewide communications will provide new
capabilities to support emergency communications.

I don't believe the intent of this network is to facilitate government business,
however hams do need to be careful of that
when performing public service & EmComm activities.

Access to a state-wide voice & data network can be a very powerful capability
for hams to have.

Sure, if you don't mind the idea of using amateur radio for

There's nothing happening over DStar that couldn't be done a

transmission lines.

Hello Everyone. My name is Fred (actually it's Freddie) I am new to the group,
but not to amateur radio. I have a novice license, never had the time to
upgrade it. I gor my first license when I was around 14 years old. My first
call sign was WN9ZLT.
Currently I am not on the air. I have no equipment at all- don't have a job
or income (other than Social Security Disability) My first rig was one that I
built myself from a kit. It was an Eico model 720 cw transmitter.
Right now, I doubt if I could build another kit or even repair anything. In
2005, I had a stroke that left me with reduced vision and very little feeling in
my left hand. I am typing this message entirely with my right hand ( I can't
get the fingers on my left hand to work well enough to press the right keys on
the computer keyboard.)

I hear that knowing the morse code is no longer required to get an amateur
radio operators license. When I was still active, I got my code speed up to
just over 10 W.P.M. I am a vietnam vet, served in the army from 1969 -1975. I
was a field radio repairman in the army- my M.O.S. was 31E20.
Will write more later- having trouble with my eyes right now.

I hear about and see these nodes for connecting to a IRLP repeater.
I have gone to irlp.net to get more info. It's confusing.
Do I need one to connect to IRLP, if so, where can I get one, what is needed to
connect a radio to computor, and how mobile are they?

Can someone help with info?
Thanks,
Mike
