Trying something new. It may take some patience.
This Wednesday Dinner is planned for Bloom, an organic and vegan restaurant at
1320 Cornwall Avenue (in downtown Bellingham between Holly and Magnolia), 5:30
PM October 9.
It's described as a restaurant in beta. Bloom (beta). Testing what works on
the menu. Menu may be somewhat limited. Still, there is the spirit of
adventure. Bloom plans more of a grand opening in Spring.
I ate there a few times. I had a great waffle one time and a vegan soup the
other. Healthy. At the same time, I also thought it's a good thing that there
are some old standby restaurants nearby (like Taco Lobo) in case there some in
our group that want something different.
I'm not normally a vegetarian, but I can be vegetarian for at least one meal.
Here is a web site with more information about Bloom
http://www.bellinghameats.com/bloom-vegan-bellingham.html
Note also that I've arranged for this Wednesday, but since then discovered that
Bloom's web site may be out of date and still doesn't list Wednesday's in hours
of operation.
More news later including other items for my newsletter. It's time for me to
get some rest.

Next Wednesday Dinner will be the monthly potluck at 801 Newell Street. 5:30 PM
December 2. Small residential street behind Pipeline Pizza. Park along street,
walk through garden gate.

World Aids Day in Bellingham December 1.
Bellingham – Begun by the World Health Organization in 1988, World AIDS Day has
been observed every December 1st since, serving to ignite not only our energy
and our passion to the global consequences of the AIDS epidemic, but acting as a
living, yearly tribute to the 25 million lives lost. "But despite 21 years of
World AIDS Days," says Scott Bertani, Assistant Director for Evergreen AIDS
Foundation, " the shroud of AIDS-related stigma still exists, crisscrossing our
state in wide swaths from Maple Falls and Ferndale, on up from Lynden and down
to Bellingham like ridges of grass, cut and thrown together by a sickle of
shame."
"While death from HIV/AIDS is no longer the inevitable, swift and savage result
that it once was," he goes on to say, "on this day—in 2009—this virus,
unfortunately, looks very similar to how it did before the advent of hope and
medicine: incurably fatal, and for many debilitating. " With incapacitating
side-effects that range in everything from anemia to gastrointestinal problems;
extreme fatigue to increased rates of heart and liver disease, cancer and
diabetes, it's more often than not, the most psychologically devastating thing
of all—lipoatrophy (or wasting syndrome)—that becomes the scarlet letter for
some 56,300 newly infected U.S. citizens per year. And for those infected (and
affected), life is often re-birthed each day rather than being fully lived, and
depression can become a way of life.
In Washington State, in fact, approximately 10,500 people are now living with
HIV or AIDS (PLWHA), including 250 locally. Nearly 7,000 have died since 1982
alone. And as the years march on, the line between optimism and reality can wear
thin for many human service agencies that both care for PLWHA and help prevent
HIV transmission.
To that note, December 1st is the world community's call to action—not just to
remember those lost, but to support those now living forward with this disease
by making a public statement against stigma, discrimination, intolerance and the
need for routine HIV screening. Thanks to improved treatment options and medical
care, there really is a way forward. So, to that end, a coalition of local
support agencies—Evergreen AIDS Foundation along with Sean Humphrey House, Slum
Doctor Programme, Interfaith Community Health Clinic, Western Washington
University and Mount Baker Planned Parenthood—is asking that you take part in
memorial activities to commemorate this day; because, in reality, none of us are
truly immune from the impact of HIV/AIDS.

Thanksgiving Potluck in Anacortes.
Thanksgiving is only a month away and my wife Lisa and I would like to again
share our home this Thanksgiving by inviting you and others to our house for a
Thanksgiving Potluck dinner, Thursday evening the 26th of November.
Our house will be open to anyone who would like to join us for dinner, not just
those who are members of the LGBT Community. It doesn't matter if they are gay
straight or whatever.
Last year we had 10 wonderful guests from Whidbey Island and Anacortes as well
as from Bellingham and the upper Skagit River.
Please come whether or not you are able to bring something, there will be plenty
of food. Just bring your appetites and anyone that you know who doesn't have
somewhere to go for Thanksgiving.
Lisa will again be deep frying a turkey, weather permitting. (It was almost too
cold last year to get the peanut oil up to temperature!)
We will also be making some other side dishes but the menu is open for those of
you who would like to bring a favorite dish to share.
Anything that you would like to bring will be fine, and duplicate dishes are a
plus, there can never be too much food!!
Veggie platters, chips, snacking food and deserts would be wonderful as well as
side dishes, rolls, salads, etc.
Let us know if you will need to use some cooking space and Lisa will coordinate
things in the kitchen. The atmosphere will be super casual; you know paper
plates and plastic glasses.
If you are planning to come could you let us know?
If you could bring along a couple of chairs to add to the ones that we already
have it would be helpful.
You should also bring whatever beverage that you would like to drink and yes
ALCOHOL is welcome!
You can contact us at my email address for directions etc.
Sarah_Dippitty @ Yahoo.Com (Remove the spaces before and after the @)
Our doors will open, so to speak, at 2 o'clock for socializing.
The actual dinner will be scheduled for 4 o'clock and of course you are welcome
to come earlier if you need to prepare something.

Referendum 71 makes historic passage
Commentary
I think the first time a state passes something like domestic partnership by
popular vote.
Human rights extentions are often done by court order or legislative action,
rahter than majority vote, but popular vote is not unprecidented.
In 1978, California voters turned down Prop 6 otherwise known as the Briggs
Initiative. It would have tried to bann gay people from teaching carreers.
That same election day saw Seattle voters resoundingly defeat city Initiative
13. 13 would have overturned the non discrimination ordinance that was passed a
few years earlier by Seattle City Council.
See my blog shot of Seattle Times front page November 8 1978. I happened to
keep that one.

Hello,
If you want your ballot to be counted in the tally on Election night, November
3, 2009, it is important to mail it now!
It can take some days for them to be counted and last year 8,000 ballots in King
County were turned in too late.
It also means more resources can go to the media campaign.
200,000 calls have been made-20,000 a day now. 33,000 people are signed up on
Facebook- 100 an hour.
It is still too close to call. Every vote counts.
Let's show the world that Washington State believes in equality!
Thanks,
Kathy

* Ballots in the mail that are postmarked on, or before, Tuesday November 3 are
OK. Remember postage and mail pickup times in your area. For not using the
mail, there is also a ballot box in front of Whatcom County Court House.

News from Village Vida Centre
Dear Family, Friends and Supporters:
Welcome to your 3rdnd edition of the Village Vida Centre NewsyNotes. Moving
right along… Highlights in this issue include:
a. Gender Variant & Transgender Medical Project
b. Free VVC Membership & Mailing List for NewsyNotes distribution
c. New website – perpetual draft form! – Resource Lists are now online
d. Educational Programs - upcoming
e. Womyn's Dance Jan 30th and/or Talent/Variety Show – your input needed…
(a) VVC is going to co-sponsor a training and informational seminar
that addresses the specific mental and physical healthcare needs of transgender
patients. This seminar also includes sensitivity training for medical
personnel, clinical educators, nursing and allied health students, and human
resource personnel in Whatcom county who come in contact with not only
transgender individuals but also gender variant (sometimes referred to as
"gender benders") individuals who may present in a medical setting, learning
environment, and/or work setting. VVC is in the initial phase of program
planning (forming planning committees and soliciting presenters) and is hoping
for a date in April 2010 to present this educational program to help fill the
"gaps" in medical care. Your help is needed, if interested please call Village
Vida Centre: 360-738-7999.
(b) VVC's NewsyNotes is only meeting a very small fraction of our target
GLTBA population. VVC would like for you to consider helping to expand our
outreach and information dissemination. There are a few ways you can help and
also benefit from your involvement:
1. Continue to pass info about VVC's programs and events to those who have

the resources lists and program/events schedules. We've also included columns
where personals for roomies and play pals can be posted. I would like to thank
Marian Beddill once again for the technical support and guidance. Our site will
probably be in raw form until we have a dedicated webbie to keep it updated and
make it prettier. If this sounds like a fun project for you let us know, VVC
can use your help in this area.
By the way, Village Vida Centre – A GLTBA Community/Resource Center is being
utilized as such - a valuable resource. We have gotten at least a dozen (phone)
requests for contact info for services in our community. A safe, secure and
welcoming physical location of our own is of course still a necessity to meet
the needs of the GLTBA population in Whatcom County on a day-to-day basis. I am
quite certain that if we pull together, this dream will become a reality in the
near future. If you can, why not invest?!!

Commentary submitted by a reader
Hello Robert. I'd like to add another perspective related to some of your post
regarding Prop 71. Having worked in a company where most of the employees are
from Lynden or Ferndale , I can promise you that doing things like having
couples kissing in Costco will only hurt our chances. Why can't they just stand
holding hands or wearing a sign that says "we are a couple"? I understand the
thrill of shocking social conservatives, but that does nothing but make them
more determined to beat us at the ballot box. I would ask these people if they
are trying to gain support – or just to vent their personal frustrations.
Social conservatives do not neck in public and would prefer not to see anyone
doing it – and neither would I. So the idea that doing so is going to bring
them over to our side, or at least de-motivate them is ludicrous. Like it or
not, they see it as an effort to force our lifestyle on them. And isn't that
really exactly what it is – a demand for "special rights"? Think about how you
feel when a straight couple comes into a gay environment and insists on making
sure everyone knows they are straight. I find it very annoying and I think many
other gay people do too. So why do some of us think they should not react the
same way?
Are you more accepting of Muslims demanding sharia law and Jihad in the midst of
our society than of those who have their private faith, but are willing to
adhere to the same civil laws as the rest of us? Have Al Sharpton or Jesse
Jackson been anywhere nearly as effective at gaining support for civil rights
for African-Americans as Barak Obama? Identity politics is a dead end street
which only emphasizes differences and reinforces a us vs. them mentality. I'm
not advocating that we pretend we're straight but does a drag queen not, in
effect, represent the same thing? They are both, after all, acting. I just
want to be myself and not have to "act" like anything else without being
penalized. I thoroughly support the right of anyone to cross dress, but the
irony is that they already have that right! For those who don't remember, laws
requiring drag queens wear at least one article of men's clothing were
overturned decades ago. But there are still laws prohibiting recognition of our
personal relationships and denying us important financial and social rights.
Are we trying to change discriminatory laws or force people to change their
personal opinions? I actually couldn't care less if a religious conservative
from Lynden thinks I'm an abomination if I have the same legal rights as they
do. And I don't believe I have any right to demand more. Behavior can be
legislated. Do any of us actually think opinions should be? Conservatives are
completely justified in objecting to any perceived attempts to do so.
I attended the march in Seattle last fall for marriage rights and what impressed
me was how, by all outward appearances, the crowd there was virtually
indistinguishable from an average cross section of the larger society. It filled
me with a sense of hope to see that our community had matured to that level.
One result of that was a very large number of heterosexuals were comfortable in
that crowd. Think about what a powerful message that send to other straight
people. It wasn't that anyone was trying to "act straight" as far as I could
see. They were just average people demanding equal rights. The average gay
person does not do drag or make public displays of their sexuality, so why do
some want to promote that image as representative of all of us? Homophobia is
about fear. Does anyone really believe one can calm that fear with what are
perceived as threats? I say all this as someone whose partner is 5000 miles
away in a foreign country and who would desperately like us to have equal rights
for our relationships with regard to immigration. I would venture to guess that
many of the people planning to make such provocative displays are not in serious
committed partnerships or they would take a very different approach. From my
point of view, the best way to get laws changed in our favor is by demonstrating
that we only want the same things they do, that we have common values and mores
and are willing to be as tolerant of our differences from them as we are asking
them to be of us. I believe that most of us are, so why try to prove otherwise?
One final note: To those who sincerely embrace radical social change beyond the
acceptance of homosexuality, more power to you. But why is the larger gay
community obligated to let you speak for all of us when many of us don't?

A local project for Yes on 71
Interested in being an activist for Referendum 71?
Can you take two hours out of a Saturday afternoon?
Then please read the information below:
Hello everyone!
As I'm sure most of you know, voting is about to happen on Referendum
71, which will either maintain domestic partnerships for gay couples,
or completely strip them of the rights they already have. It is
important that we all vote to approve this, as it would take us one
step closer to equality, rights, and privileges for everyone. We all
know this, but I want to make sure that the people of Bellingham do
too.
I am currently taking a class called 50 Random Acts of Theatre at
Fairhaven College, in which we perform random acts of beauty, art,
kindness, profundity, you name it, out in the community. For one of
our large acts, we are organizing a `Queer Visibility Project,' in
which people of any sexual orientation would come together to
represent the couples that Referendum 71 directly affects.
Our vision is to have as many people as possible (both queers and
allies) paired off into couples of the same sex, seemingly coming
together at random in one large group until onlookers feel like they
are surrounded by Bellingham's community. The couples would each stand
in one spot for 5 to 10 minutes, in various affectionate positions.
Some hugging, kissing, with arms around each other, proposing, holding
hands, or whatever people are comfortable with. We are making signs
for the couples to hold, saying things like "Vote Yes on Ref 71 for
equal rights." Then, after a planned break, each couple will unfreeze
and walk off together.
We want to do this installation at least once with as many people as
possible. We will perform it on Saturday Oct. 24th at Bellis Fair
Mall, then make our way out to the Guide Meridian and hold up signs
along the sidewalk. Time allowing, we could then move on to perform it
again at Costco in the middle of the shopping rush.
We'll need to meet for about a half an hour beforehand to plan it out.
The meeting will be in the Bellis Fair food court at 11:00, where we
will plan for a period before going out to perform. The total time
commitment will be about two hours.
If you are interested then please contact Peter Donnelly by email or
phone. Tell any and all of your friends that you think would be able
to participate! It would be great if we could get people of all
genders, orientations, shapes, sizes, colors, and ages. It is time to
make our voices heard, and do our part for equality within Washington
state!
Thanks very much,
Peter Donnelly

Thanksgiving Potluck in Anacortes.
Thanksgiving is only a month away and my wife Lisa and I would like to again
share our home this Thanksgiving by inviting you and others to our house for a
Thanksgiving Potluck dinner, Thursday evening the 26th of November.
Our house will be open to anyone who would like to join us for dinner, not just
those who are members of the LGBT Community.
It doesn't matter if they are gay straight or whatever.
Last year we had 10 wonderful guests from Whidbey Island and Anacortes as well
as from Bellingham and the upper Skagit River.
Please come whether or not you are able to bring something, there will be plenty
of food.
Just bring your appetites and anyone that you know who doesn't have somewhere to
go for Thanksgiving.
The atmosphere will be super casual; you know paper plates and plastic glasses.
Hugs and Smiles,
Sarah and Lisa
This message will be repeated in November.

Op-Ed by Senator Ranker: Same-Sex Rights Address Historic Injustices
Reprinted from emailing sent out by Ranker
When I thought about the experiences and challenges I'd face as your
state senator, I didn't think that in my first year I'd find myself on
the front lines of a fight that's been brewing over the last 40 years.
From the Stonewall riots of 1969 in New York, to the protests last
year in California over the passage of Proposition 8, to rallies at
state capitals this year, same-sex couples have been fighting against
discrimination and working towards equality all across America — with
limited success.
This is a battle our friends, neighbors and family members have been
fighting, but it hasn't been over power or territory, or about country
or flag. Their struggle is one that we've seen far too many times in
our country's history — a fight for equal rights. This hasn't been a
war in the traditional sense of armies and navies, but like others in
our history it has been a war where families are torn apart and far
too much blood has been spilled.
We've taken steps — though not as many or as fast as I'd like — to
equalize the way our state treats same and opposite sex couples. In
2007 Washington created the Domestic Partnership registry, allowing
same-sex couples and opposite-sex couples to register with the state
for some of the hundreds of rights and responsibilities given to
married couples. In 2008 the Legislature took another step, bringing
domestic partners closer — but not close enough — to equal treatment
by the state.
I came to Olympia to serve the 40th district. Just as I can't choose
to represent a fraction of the population, I won't let the state
choose to not recognize the commitment and relationships of our
friends and neighbors who happen to love someone of their own gender.
When I voted in March to expand rights granted to domestic partners,
the so called "everything but marriage" bill, it wasn't about giving
something to a specific group of citizens. It is about moving
Washington forward and ensuring fairness and equality for everyone in
our state.
Opponents have tried to mislead the public about what our domestic
partnership laws do for families in Washington. The bill I voted for
will make sure that if God forbid an emergency worker is killed in the
line of duty, the survivor — regardless of whether or not it is a
survivor of the same sex — can be protected under the officer's
pension. It ensures that state agencies will treat domestic partners
just as they treat married couples.
The law we passed is the latest manifestation of the most fundamental
principle upon which our nation was founded: life, liberty, and the
pursuit of happiness for all. For our state and country to defend the
idea of a place where all people are treated fairly by their
government, steps like our domestic partnership laws are taken.
No one piece of legislation will solve our nation's injustices, but
over time we'll evolve as a nation and undertake changes that move us
forward. The steps we've taken with domestic partnerships will help
close the gap between the hopes of our nation's forefathers of a more
perfect union, and the real-life struggles that continue to this day.
State Senator Kevin Ranker, D-San Juan Island, representing the 40th
Legislative District

Dropping by a few things in Bellingham
Last week, I dropped by the cafe where Front Runners was having their "after
walk / run brunch. Looked like 20 people around that table.
Wow.
Great turnout. Of course winter means a slower time for the Padden gathering,
but it keeps going all year. Even with just a small turn out some stormy winter
days people can be credited for being there to keep the thread alive through
rain and snow. The seed remains alive and it's worth it. At times, it truly
blosems into a big turnout. I can't make it to Front Runners that often due to
my night schedule, but once in a while I'm awake at that time. For me it's also
a bike ride to the lake. A great group of folks. Lots of conversation as
people head around the lake.
http://www.gaybellingham.org/2008/05/front-runners-of-bellingham.html
Also last week was a housewarming party (apartment warming) for a person in the
fairie coffee. Lights went out in much of downtown that day so I wondered if I
could get into Mount Baker Apartments where the party was. There is an
electronic door downstairs to the building.
The door was propped open during the power outage so I got in and to the
apartment that was lit by candle light. Then the lights came on and people
cheered. All in fun. Like bohemian living. Or a chapter from day in the life
of Bellingham.
Later that week, someone on my Facebook Friends list sent out a link to a
Youtube video about the outage.
Amazing.
The tree and arcing power line was caught by someone who posted it to Youtube.

I don't know if I would have wanted to stand as close as it looked like the

moderate/easy hike of about 5 miles round trip, and those that want a little
more challenge can climb to Anderson Butte summit for an additional 2 miles.
There should be great fall colors on this autumn hike. We will meet in
Fairhaven in front of Skylarks restaurant at 9:00 AM and carpool to the
trailhead (south to Hwy 20 and Baker lake road). Bring a lunch, plenty of
water, good hiking shoes, and rain gear. Join us for another fun day in the
wilderness! Carl.

My 2009 bike tour is now on-line
This is Robert, editor of this newsletter writing. Just completed putting up
pictures and a few videos from 1,300 miles of bicycle travel.
Most of the images are on Flickr, but the menu will take you to various
sections. Click on the thumbnails to get enlargement and descriptions. Another
click on the magnifying glass brings large image, but no description. If you're
in a big hurry and have high bandwidth, you can set it on "slideshow," but
slideshow misses the descriptions. The 3 short videos are on Youtube and listed
at bottom of menu.

Former Bellingham resident writes from New York and the world of music
Dear Robert,
I wanted to let the music fans amongst your newsletter readers know of the
record label I opened this year Roman Midnight Music
(http://www.romanmidnightmusic.org) which has just released it's first CD, which
I've not just worked very hard on and am proud of, but some of your readers
might find a good addition in their musical libraries ... and it comes in time
to be stocking stuffers!
Some of your readers might remember me (or they might have come across my name)
from my decade working as a Bellingham historian in the late 90's (back in the
"Rainbow Bridge/Matt's Place" days!), culminating in the book "A History of
Bellingham's Parks", daily/monthly columns for the Bellingham Herald/Whatcom
Watch and even a few pieces for an early Betty Pages, if not from my extensive
theater work both on and off stage. Over 2 years ago I moved to Manhattan. Last
year I found myself out of work but weeks before the newspapers reported the
first groundbreaker in our current depression. With no luck at finding work in
the bullseye of the economic woes (even temp agencies were closing around here)
I figured the only way to change things was to try new things (which I believe
will be the outcome of these days, particularly in the eyes of recent college
graduates who don't want their first job to be unemployment). I started my own
company - a record label/music publisher - something I'd dreamed of doing for
years, as a way of helping hobbyist musicians get their music out there, cause
marketing/designing/business can take as much time as creating/rehearsing and
can be far from creatively inspiring, particularly when one is balancing a full
time job and/or family. Plus, though I'm a musician myself I found I liked the
business end just as much.
The outcome is "F@T Hits of Yesterday's Journeys, Vol. 1" is by Manhattan
cocktail pianist Albert Aprigliano. Some of your readers might be interested in
this solo piano album ... and not just because both Albert and I are gay! Since
graduating Juilliard in 1980 Albert has worked as a Manhattan cocktail/society
pianist, which has led him to perform behind Patti LuPone, Chip Zien (of
Sondheim's Into The Woods), Kyra Sedgwick and opera star Aprile Millo. You can
find out more at http://www.albertaprigliano.net and he has 227 videos at
http://www.youtube.com/jewelyard. This CD, his debut, features 10 popular tunes
that might have been heard on the Titantic (think Irving Berlin), albeit his
renditions are far from any grandfather's music and, to quote one listener, make
you want to dance! It's $12 (plus s&h), available from his website. In another
month it'll be available on CDBaby as downloads, but as I designed the cover art
I of course encourage not downloading this one for a change.
Also, after seeing my design work I was asked to re-issue the 22 self-produced
albums by 94-year old pianist Irving Fields who in the 1950's fused klezmer
music & latin rhythms on the landmark RCA album "Bagels & Bongos" (and continues
to play 6 nights a week here in Manhattan!). I'll be distibuting some CD
reissues of this classic album Irving had tucked away, along along with
re-issuing his current discography and some new stuff including an unheard
comedy album about Joe Putz with the big schlong! Some of your readers might
know Irving as he's become popular on youtube for composing the Youtube.com Song
and the Obama & Hillary Rumba!
Albert & Irving are just the beginning. I'm planning to eventually release the
work of Allen Peterson, former graphic illustrator for the Bellingham Herald,
along with an acoustic rocker in Boston and "poemedy" hip-hop artist/poet Summer
Hill 7. My label focuses on "music ... off the beaten path". I'm trying to live
up to that ... let alone beat economic woes with creativity! Thanks for sharing
these details of my creative efforts, Robert.

News from Village Vida Center
Please share this information with your lists/contacts – they may benefit from
your support and thank you for it!!
September 13, 2009
Dear Family, Friends and Supporters:
Welcome to your 2nd edition of the Village Vida Centre NewsyNotes. So many
inspiring and positive things have happened in the last month and more to come
very soon. Highlights in this issue include:
a. feedback about VVC dance
b. VVC Open House outcomes
c. Success and mission/vision of your community/resource center
d. Invitations to events that are GLTBA friendly
Thank you for your response to "why you were unable to attend the VVC
Premier GLTBA Dance". Common feedback threads were related to time of year –
vacationing, beautiful weather that day (tired at end of day), gardening, and
"under the weather". Most had planned on the dance, but life got in the way.
I've gotten only one response in regards to dance's inclusiveness – perhaps boys
and girls not wanting to play together – so with little info to base this
assumption on, I am considering the "no response" as to a possible reason of
lower attendance – I ass-u-me that some prefer dances to be more exclusive.
From those who attended the dance, I received several complements on selection
and sound quality of the music. Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship really has a
beautiful sanctuary/ballroom. Thank you again to all the contributors and
volunteers. Thinking of next dance to be a womyn's masquerade dance (mostly
dance music – 70s, 80s, 90s; some this decade) on Saturday Jan 30th $10. at
door – venue to be determined. Let VVC know what you think about these plans.
So, the VVC Open House Celebration @ Lake Padden…I received an incredible amount
of requests from our community to be put on the GLTBA Resource List ("purple
pages": confidential - contact info shared only with those who need your
services and products) – lot's of phone calls and emails to relay your
business/organization's contact info. I've done lots of footwork (pedal
bicycle) in inviting GLTBA friendly biz/orgs to be put on list and to attend
the open house.
Actual attendance at Lake Padden was what I expected for day of week and weather
– it sprinkled just a little and we were set-up at (8) tables under the shelter.
Several handfuls of participants would drop by and chat/network and then would
be followed by another group of participants. You or a friend can still be put
on the resource list, just let me know. Do you know of any GLTBA friendly
biz/org in Whatcom County ? One question came up that I could not answer – are
there any GLTB doctors (general practitioners –GPs) in the area?
Well, Village Vida Centre has been officially a nonprofit organization
community/resource center serving Whatcom County GLTBA since June 01, 2009. Sep
1st, VVC received the certificate with gold seal from the Secretary of State
recognizing us as a Non-Profit Corporation – you know, that legal stuff!
I'd like to remind you of VVC's mission: to meet the unique and special needs of
people of diverse sexual orientations, diverse gender identities and expressions
and welcome allies (GLTBA – gay, lesbian, transgender, bisexual, allies) who
support our mission and vision. VVC's vision is to level the playing field so
that all GLTBA residents of Whatcom County have available to them a safe,
secure, and supportive community/resource center that provide educational,
recreational, and social networking opportunities and programs that promotes
growth and increase potential to contribute to local economy.
Why the reminder? Because you are just you. You may or may not feel that you
have any unique or special needs that are not being met. Those who struggle
with who they are, who struggle with how they express who they are, and struggle
with how they are perceived, received and treated by others (many times is
unjust and inhumane) – do need the resources and dialogue to improve their daily
lives and quality of life and as a means to foster supportive relationships with
those who are ignorant. This need for "community" and resources is evident in
many ways. That's why there have been several attempts to have a place to
"connect" such as Mert's smoke shop, Matt's sandwich shop, and Dee & Annie's (&
Sherry's) Rainbow Bridge Books and more recent contributions from Robert's
www.theslowlane.com, Elisabeth's www.lesgo..com, and Janis'
whatcomwomen@yahoogroups.com to name a few. These online sources are very much
needed – for those who have internet access, but only as a supplement to the
experiential learning and real world human interactions face-to-face.
There still exists the "Digitial Divide" – those who do not have access to the
internet for whatever reason. Village Vida Centre can be instrumental in
filling this gap and reaching more of the GLTBA target group. We don't have a
"space" to call our own yet – still looking (for a rich person to make an
investment in a nice structure – buy us a center!), but with our gatherings at
different programs/events this will give us an opportunity to network and meet
the needs. VVC is asking for your help in reaching those who are limited in
their access to the internet. You can post events/ program flyers and schedules
where you work on an employee community board, in your office, you can spread
the word about the center and suggest to those interested to get on the mailing
list – contact VVC. I don't mind posting events/programs at your work – just
give me the ok and we'll give it a try.
Pretty long letter, hope it was not too laborious. Just want to end with some
(4) events that may be of interest to you:
1. I will be hosting gayme, movie, potluck nights on
the 4th Thursday of the month for the men and the 4th Friday of the month for
women September – April. Details to follow along with program schedule…
2. There will be a town meeting addressing referendum
71 domestic partnership @ Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship on Monday Sep 20th –
more details at Equal Rights Washington website: www.wafst.org.
3. Evergreen Aids Foundation is having their
fundraiser film festival starting at the end of the week. Their phone number
is: 671-0703.
4. And finally, "One Night Brazil " is open to ALL
as a fundraiser for www..endruralpoverty.org/party – an organization that is
chaired by a devoted and wonderful gay man – Bob - who now lives in B'ham. This
exciting event on Sat. September 26th includes dinner, drinks, auctions of
fabulous gifts/travel, and entertainment – all for you and the cause. Ask a
friend to go and join the party bus down to Seattle . I want to contribute by
babysitting should you need that help to get you there!

Dear Family, Friends and Supporters,
This is our 1st (edition) of the Village Vida Centre NewsyNotes. We
wanted to keep you updated on happening things with the VVC community resource
center (but at present, lack skills for putting an e-newsletter/conventional
newsletter out!!).
Everything is coming together slowly but steadily. Most experiences are
positive learning events. VVC is still looking for a space to have open (2 –
6pm: M- F) so that LGTBA folks can use it as a community resource center for
services and a safe place where one can relax and also engage in activity.
Today is the first time I sensed that a property owner was prejudice to our
GLTBA population – that's okay, it was a nice spot, but we don't want to support
anyone who is not supportive of us. This experience just reinforces the reason
why VVC exists – to level the playing field, promote social justice, and to
secure a supportive environment.
At this time, if you need references or access to resources for services (A
– Z: Attorneys to Youth Services), please give me a call @ 738-7999 for a quick
response or contact VVC at vvc@....
We are excited about upcoming fundraising events, programs, and projects.
We can always use your talents as a volunteer in carrying out these plans. Take
a peak and see what interests you:
Aug 29 LGTBA Premier Dance (Fundraiser)
Saturday 8pm – midnight @ the Bellingham Unitarian Fellowship – 1708 I St
Sep 09 (09-09-09) VVC Open House Celebration (Free*)
Wednesday 2 – 6 pm @ Lake Padden (east entrance – picnic area)
- this is your chance to show your community what you have/do to meet
their needs. Please call me if you want to participate as a vendor/provider and
entertainer.
Sep 21st, 28th, Oct 5th "Live Longer & Keep the Change!" (Free*)
Mondays 6 – 8pm @ Health and Education Center – 3333 Squalicum Parkway
- 3 week program which goes over: change: working thru that mind stuff;
superfoods; and aerobic & strength training benefits. Bring food to snack on if
you like.
October – date to be determined - "Near End Decisions Now" (Free*)
2 hour program @ Health and Education Center – 3333 Squalicum Parkway
- helps you fill out a legal document to plan for choices should you become
seriously ill. Bring food to snack on if you like.
November – dates to be determined- "You can Prevent Diabetes" (Free*)
- 3 week program which goes over: a meal plan; moving the body, managing
weight. Bring food to snack on if you like.
• *All educational programs are free, donations are always welcome – money to
run programs are mainly from your contributions - VVC probably won't be eligible
for grant money for at least 1 – 2 years.
And now a little bit more about leveling the playing field…Village Vida Centre
is in the process of coordinating a project to provide sensitivity training for
the medical community, nursing educators, and students in Whatcom county in
relation to professional and compassionate care of gender non-conforming
individuals and transgender individuals. I envision the presentation/seminar
consisting of healthcare professionals experienced with gender issues and
sexuality, educators, and a panel of transgender, gender non-conforming
patients. There is certainly a need for this training. If you would like to be
a presenter/participant, or if you know of other qualified professionals or
contact persons to make this project a success please let me know: 738-7999,
vvc@....
Well, that is what has been happening in and outside of the head of dalia. Let
me know of any ideas you have for programs, any event you want to lead or
participate in, and how you can help. If you want to lead support groups or be
involved in interest clubs, let me know so that I can help you organize (get
people together) and to secure a space for your meetings. Want to organize a
theme night (game, movie)?
Volunteer. It's not only fun, selfish and philanthropic, but you also benefit
from free VVC membership and discounts.
I look forward to hearing from you. Peace, dalia.
Sincerely,
dalia de Jesus, MEd,

Film festival coming to Bellingham in September
Hey all!!
I've talked to many of you about the upcoming Living Out Loud LGBT visibility
project, and September is fast approaching. We are very excited. We secured some
great movies for the film festival. The gala will be a great party, whether or
not you can get tickets for the opening film (the party continues for those who
can't attend the film). More details on these will follow. In the meantime, I
have attached information about the LGBT visibility project. This is an exhibit
we are developing in conjunction with WWU's archivist to highlight OUR place in
the community. I am sending this to you because you represent various LBBTQ
organizations and we would like you to pass this call for submissions on to your
membership list. You are encouraged to share freely. Let's make ourselves
visible!
Thanks for all your help. We have really appreciated your input. And, of course,
feel free to call if you have any questions or need more information.

Evergreen AIDS Foundation
LIVING OUT LOUD: An LGBT Visibility Project
A Request for Support from our LGBT and Questioning Community
As we hope you have heard by now, this September will bring the first annual
presentation of Living Out Loud: An LGBT Visibility Project, presented by
Evergreen AIDS Foundation. The mission of this multimedia festival is to
recognize the "other" in us all and "the power of outness." Our goal is to
enhance the cultural, psychosocial and civic lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and
transgendered persons, reduce the stigma and negative stereotyping related to
sexual orientation and behavior and increase LGBT visibility in our community
through the power of film, video and other media.
LOL will include a film festival that runs from September 17, 2009 through
September 21, 2009 in Bellingham, Washington at multiple venues, with an opening
night Gala & Auction at the American Museum of Radio and Electricity (AMRE) and
opening film at the Pickford Cinema. The LOL visibility project, which includes
a grassroots exhibition and educational forums, opens September 14, 2009 at the
AMRE, with a closing reception September 25, 2009.
Updated details on specific events and locations will be available at our
website, http://www.LOLfilmfestival.org beginning the week of August 24, 2009.
All proceeds for this festival benefit Evergreen AIDS Foundation, one of the
oldest AIDS service organizations in the country (serving the community since
1985). EAF has evolved to become the largest community-based AIDS service
organization in Northwest Washington.
We are very exciting about this project and the encouraging response we have
received from you, our community – your support is critical to LOL's success!
OUR VISIBILITY PROJECT NEEDS YOUR HELP!
Ruth Steele, archivist at Western Washington University's Center for Pacific
Northwest Studies, is drawing on public sources to mount an exhibit showcasing
LGBT history in the region. We will be augmenting this collection with pieces of
our own personal history – pictures, home movies, journal excerpts, letters and
other mementos to chronicle our movement from furtive lives to public lives (or
not).
We need your help to tell the story that must be heard and seen! The LGBT story
is your story and one that can only be told through the words, art, and
memorabilia of your lives. With your help we can grow the archives representing
the LGBT experience to share with each other, our friends and neighbors and the
generations of courageous LGBT individuals that will follow us. We are asking
you to participate in this opportunity to celebrate the lives of our LGBT
community and share in the important act of, truly, Living Out Loud.
What are we looking for? Here are some general categories and examples of media
we are looking for to help tell the story of our community – but don't let us
stifle you in considering the touchstones that depict your (in)visible self. The
submission deadline of August 31, 2009 is fast approaching! Please respond
today!

My bicycle trip is going well. Came back into US south of Osoyoos, BC. Then
went through a sparsely populated area of Washington. Where is Chesaw, WA?
Curlew? I was just there. Got a bit wet, but glad forest fire danger is less.
Now I'm in a motel in Colville. Cute guys staying near me. People are "small
town friendly." Main street is kind of a thing out of the past. A really old
fashioned barbershop, for instance.
Near Chesaw, I felt a long way from home as the most powerful radio station I
could get was in the Punjabi language. Music from India.
Far, but close to home, it was the India station from Ferndale, near Bellingham.
It broadcasts on 1550 AM. Directs the signal to Canada, but towers are just
west of Ferndale. that's where they could find a station, I guess. I remember
when it was sold to the India broadcasting group.
For some reason, signal was bouncing across the mountains.
Next I head for Gardner Cave up in northeast Washington. Then down to the
Spokane area. Bicycling is slow enough to savor the scenery.

My newsletter may come out late this week as there are not many places open
Sunday and my small computer isn't working very well. For some reason it isn't

library computers when they are open.
I'm about to pass through Colville, WA. on my continuing bike tour.

Gay Men's Hike Planned
Hi All,
Our next Gay Men's Hike will be on Saturday, August 8th. We will be hiking the
Chain Lakes trail, which is a moderate hike through beautiful alpine meadows and
lakes for a loop distance of 7 miles. We will meet in front of Skylark's
Restaurant in Fairhaven at 9:00 AM and carpool to the mountain. Bring a lunch,
plenty of water, bug spray, and good hiking shoes. Hopefully, the weather will
be cooling off a little by then, and so please join us for some fun in the
wilderness! – Carl.

Friends of Gay Bellingham now on Facebook
I decided to start a Facebook Group for this newsletter and the Gay Bellingham
Resource Guide. A place where people and organizations can interact. It
replaces the open posting group I had on Yahoo which was also an experiment.
The Facebook group can be viewed by anyone on the net. Even the "Wall" of
comments is visible without being a Facebook member. However, only members of
the group can post to the wall. To join the group, one must be a Facebook
member. It's free. Facebook is a social netowking site. Then join the Friends
of Gay Bellingham group within Facebook. You can go there from the Friends of
Gay Bellingham page.
It's another experiment.

For the Bible tells me so, screening at Garden Street United Methodist Church
August 3, 7 PM. Garden Street United Methodist Church (A reconciling
congregation). 1326 N. Garden.
Screening of the Academy Award Nominated Film.
Does God really condemn loving homosexual relationships? Is the chasm
seperating Christianity from gays and lesbians too wide to cross? Isn't
religious anti-gay bias based almost soley upon misinterpritation of the Bible?
This award-winning documentary, which brilliantly reconciles homosexuality and
Biblical scripture answers these questions and more. It offers healing, clarity
and understanding to anyone caught in the crosshairs of scripture and sexual
identity.
Through the experiences of five very normal, very Christian, very American
families - including those of former House Majority Leader Richard Gephardt and
Episcopal Bishop Gene Robinson - we discover how insightful people of faith
handle the realization of having a gay child.
Mary Lou & Bob Wallner, featured in the film, along with Dotti Berry & Robynne
Sapp, Whatcom County residents, who took a year long journey to transform
themselves and the world - one person at a time, will speak and answer questions
after the screening.
Everyone is welcome!

asking if anyone is looking for a room to rent. I will have a room open in the
middle of August and I am asking for 285.00 plus half utilities. The apartment
is just off Northwest Ave by Albertsons here in Bellingham and it is on the bus
line. I do have Internet, high-Def big screen in the living room as well a house
phone line. It is a larger then normal apartment then what others are in town,
so there is plenty of room to move. I will work to get the right roommate in. I
will screen who ever is interested so heads up. I would prefer to have another
gay male in the home. The manager is really nice and is there when I need her
for things around the apartment. So if anyone is interested, drop me a call at

Living Out Loud Film Festival coming to Bellingham in September
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
Dear Community Member,
On behalf of the planning and development committee for Living Out Loud, I am
writing to invite you and any of your members, peers, constituents, etc. to take
part in Bellingham 's first annual LGBTQ film festival. All of us at Evergreen
AIDS Foundation are both excited and honored to be able to bring this long
overdue event to our collective community & we are confident that you'll want to
play a significant role in this endeavor. Here's one way in which you can join
in the fun. If this particular aspect isn't up your alley, please stay tuned .
. . . there will be more to come.
Living Out Loud ("LOL"), a LGBT visibility project, is requesting submissions
for its first annual film festival. The festival begins September 17, 2009 and
continues through September 21, 2009 in Bellingham, Washington at multiple
venues ( Pickford Film Center, Firehouse Performing Arts Center and Western
Washington University ). The mission of LOL is to "recognize the other in us
all, and the power of outness."
The goal of the film festival is to enhance the cultural, psychosocial and civic
lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered persons in Northwest
Washington, reduce the stigma and negative stereotyping related to sexual
orientation and behavior and increase LGBT visibility to our friends, family and
the larger community through the power and poignancy of film, video and other
media arts.
While the festival will present the work of foreign and domestic filmmakers and
videographers, LOL will also highlight the work of local filmmakers and
videographers.
We encourage you to share this invitation with community members as you feel is
appropriate.
For additional information, guidelines and requirements as well as the
submission form please feel free to contact Ed Wilhoite at Evergreen AIDS

Action in Bellingham
LOCAL ACTION
Please take part!
What: Peaceful Educational Event. There are paid petitioners at Bellingham
Walmart soliciting signatures to get Referendum 71 on the ballot. We will be
there to teach people from our point of view about Domestic Partnership:
WHY: They are using some slanderous methods saying that Domestic Partnership
and gay marriage are Harmful to Children. We must be there to educate people.
Where: Bellingham Walmart, Guide Meridian
When: Anytime All Week from July18-26 (no organizer and no schedule...if you
show up and no one is petitioning for Referendum 71 that is good! but look
around for them before you go. AND, please vote with your dollars and buy
elsewhere)
How: Bring yourself, your kids, your friends, your decline2sign placards and
and your heart. Influencing people by kind example is the best hope.
Thank You to Bert and Stacy for the original alert!
Whatcom One Queer Community
Also from another email
"PRESERVE MARRIAGE, PROTECT CHILDREN" screams the headline of the Referendum 71
petitions.
All,
The backers of the anti-queer Referendum 71 need 120,577 signatures by July 25
to put a domestic-partnership bill before voters in November. This week is their
final push to reach above that goal in order to ensure that it gets on the
ballot. If R-71 makes it on the ballot we will have to raise gobs of money to
fight it. They have sent their paid signature gatherers to the anti-queer
Walmart chain to vacuum up names.
Please go to Walmart, spend some time, stand near the petitioners and politely
talk to people about your story and how this referendum would negatively affect
you and your family.
You can go to the Decline to Sign website (http://www.wafst.org/?cat=3) and
download a .pdf letter size poster (be sure to print it in landscape mode by
going to the Acrobat File to set that up).
Below the jump is a letter from a most wondrous PFLAG parent who drove up from
Skagit County to engage folks outside of Walmart yesterday.
Thanking you-all in advance for all of your efforts and support!
Sincerely,
Michele Kämmerer

Message from Skagit County PFLAG maven Kathy Reim
Friday 17 July 2009
Hello, Everyone:
Robert and I got home from Bellingham about 8:00 PM where we stood with four
others who were protesting the gathering of referendum 71 signatures at
Wal-Mart.
We were there for about 75 minutes.
The signature gatherer was from Seattle and was paid $1.00 per signature. He
reminded me three times that I was depriving his children of food by my
presence. He wasn't ugly but very frustrated.
We estimate that only about a dozen people signed during that time.
His talking points:
1. This legislation was passed without "our" permission by legislators who did
it to get votes and money.
2. The sign said Stop Same Sex Marriage.
3. The paperwork says that public schools will have to teach children k-12 about
homosexuality.
4. This legislation will cost Washington taxpayers millions of dollars and tie
up the courts with divorces.
My thoughts:
1. We need to let our legislators know immediately that this is the approach
being taken by this campaign. What a slap in their faces.
2. They have printed the forms they are using and there are no legal
requirements that the language reflect anything accurate about the legislation.
It doesn't. People don't know this. (That might be a law that needs to be
passed.)
3. The Prop 8 campaign used this as their major hook. It is very effective--even
when not true.
4. He never explained this but didn't have to--it just appeals to some people.
Of the people who signed:
More women than men and they were more enthusiastic and gave more rote responses
(God is punishing America because of gay people--gay people are destroying our
families).
Most appeared affluent
30-45, a few older women but not that many
Almost no one read the material but just accepted what he said and pointed to
it when we said it was inaccurate. If it is in print, it must be true??
A few young men...not too friendly but they just ignored us.
We will need to be very specific about suggestions:
1. Be polite--not just in what is said but in your tone
2. Stand exactly where told it is okay (don't block doors or get in the way of
traffic)
3. Once people start to sign, it might make sense to stop talking to them
4. Thank those who refuse to sign (one woman went back to her car to bring us
cold bottles of water:) We had many, many people express support.
5. I think signs would help... what should or could they say?
I had a rainbow umbrella, which was great because it was very hot.
Our wonderful young friend Josh, who is the president of the Club Diversity at
Sedro-Woolley High School, had a sign that said "Referendum 71 hurts me."
I held a fabric picture of my family made by Terry Rhines of Tacoma PFLAG.
I feel really sad tonight. I don't want to but I do.
I am grateful to the Bellingham folks (Stacy and Bert) who called me.
I am grateful for my family, for my friend Josh and all of you.
Please contact Stacy and Bert if you can help for an hour or two over the
weekend.
Hugs,
Kathy
Saturday P.S.
The word we had is that the local manager in B'ham was not happy about this but
it was a corporate decision.
We need a serious boycott of Wal-Mart. I despise this company anyway for lots of
reasons. Also we need some letters to the papers (remember the small
communities) that explain to people that the information on the petition is not
required to be accurate and it isn't.
Horrible, huh.
