I did a little more research. The Battery Council International says
that "more than 93% of the lead" from a battery is recycled
(http://www.batterycouncil.org/news-041902.html). The EPA estimates
that "Nearly 90 percent of all lead-acid batteries are recycled"
(http://www.epa.gov/epaoswer/non-hw/muncpl/battery.htm). That leaves
7% to 10% that goes "somewhere" else.

I read somewhere that lead-acid batteries are "99%" recycled. Does anyone know what exactly that means, or have better information? Is 1% of the lead "lost"...

Lead is recycled. Plastic casing can only be recycled to a certain extent. Still, what is the other 1% is truely the question. Arthur ... From: bigdig98036 ...

Usually a figure of this sort refers to numbers of batteries collected for recycling - so this would mean that one battery in every 100 is thrown way instead...

I see where the 99% figure came from. There are quotes on the 'net that say SLA's are over 99% recyclable... a different thing altogether than 99% being...

Yes they can recycle even the sulphated lead. And the so 1 % still may be processed for other uses, a lot more re-processing than the garbage you "produce",...

BigDig, I wonder if my earlier response to you query reached you? In effect, I estimated that 3 million tons of lead per year go to waste, some into the air...

... If I recall, it's about 92%. Some are "lost" due to accidents, illegal dumping and the vehicle being scrapped w/o battery being removed....
