Hi All;
I hope that I don't have to sell this one, but, as things keep getting worse and
I have to sell things to aford food and rent and the like, I may have to sell it
as well...
THANK YOU Marty

I have an Altair 8800b that I'd like to see go to a good home.

The computer has not been turned on since the early 1980's. At that time it was
in good working order. It had been used with a disk-based CP/M system. I don't
have the disk drive or disk controller card.

I also have an old tape deck/controller that had been used with the Altair to
load BASIC. The tape deck has not run since the late 1970's.

If someone would be interested in this equipment, please feel free to contact
me.

I just listed my MITS Altair Computer Notes for auction on ebay if anyone is
interested. It includes an extra copy of the September 1976 issue that MITS sent
back to me after I had pointed out an error on the silkscreen of the Altair 680
that had 2 transisters backwards. I have the starting bid for the notes set at
$50.

Hi All,

After wanting one for many years I've just managed to puchase an Altair 8800.
The machine works and comes with 9k or memory, cpu board, 88-SIOB with cassette
interface, 88-4PIO card and a home built parallel card. It also comes with much
of the original documentation and also cassette tapes with 8k basic on them.

So far I've managed to get the machine to work by using the number adding
program in the operations manual so I'm pretty happy that it works at a ground
level, but my goal is to find a method to load basic into the Altair. I'm not
sure at this stage if I can use the 88-4PIO or 88-SIOB cards to interface to a
terminal program so any help would be great. I may try and use the cassette
interface to the 88-SIOB but I'm currently missing the 10 pin plastic connector
which attaches the cables to the 88-SIOB, I'll try and work around this when I
have time.

I'm a software developer not an electronics expert so my knowledge of all things
electronics is very limited.

I will post up some pics of my Altair in the photos section.

Thanks,
Theo

Welcome, Theo!

The 10-pin wafer connectors are around still if you look for them. If you have
troubles, let me know, I can send you one. You will need to buy a decent
crimping tool, such as the one made by AMP, that crimps this sort of connector.

The cassette tape interface would be the coolest way to boot Basic - if you have
old Altair Basic tapes, I recommend copying them ASAP. The older tapes are a bit
fragile.

If you want to boot via the serial port connected to a PC, here is what you will
need to do:

1: Find a terminal program that does not strip off any characters, such as
control-Z or null. This is surprisingly difficult - many terminal programs strip
this character or that, and don't tell you that they are doing so! :-) I use
RealTERM, which works fine.

2: Set the terminal program up for no handshaking, and a low baud rate. I think
1200 baud will work; 300 baud certainly works.

3: Your SIO-B has a TTL interface, as opposed to an RS-232 interface. DO NOT
connect it to an RS-232 port on your PC, as this will damage your SIO-B!

You will either need to find a serial port dongle for your PC that has a TTL
interface, or you will need to build a small TTL-to-RS-232 level shifter. The
easiest way would be to use a MAX-232 chip
(http://shop.ebay.com/i.html?_nkw=max232) to make a little daughter board that
hangs on the SIO-B. These chips are pretty easy to hook up.

4: Find a paper-tape image of Altair Basic and send it to the Altair through the
serial port. If you can't find a good Basic image, let me know - I will post one
here.

Good luck, have fun!

Thanks very much for the info. You have hit on some good points. I think my
cassette interface board has something that looks like the RS232 addition on it.
I will take a pic and post it up. I will try and get the cassette interface
working, the cables have the little connectors already on the ends so that part
is easy. I think the only bit missing is the connector. Also I don't have a
tape drive currently so I'll have to buy one.

Thanks for the offer of the connector, if anyone can put me onto a website where
I can buy one directly that would be great.

Thanks,
Theo

Digikey carries the correct connectors for the 2SIO (and also for the CPU). You
might even find a local Australian site for Digikey. Here is the USA URL:

This is the correct housing:

http://search.digikey.com/scripts/DkSearch/dksus.dll?Detail&name=WM1572-ND

and this is the correct pin:

This is the sort of crimp tool you want to use for the 2SIO & CPU board Molex
connectors:

http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/Sargent-Tools/1026CT/?qs=sGAEpiMZZMtArvHj40t\
tL8Lxvl9yzXKUVqHFqYBWOJY%3d

Your crimper needs to roll the tabs around as it crimps - a simple squeeze will
not make a reliable connection. Crimping these terminals is a 2-step operation:
first crimp the contact to the stripped end of the wire, then crimp the contact
around the wire's insulation. The correct tool has positions for the wire and
also for the insulation.

Martin,

Thanks very much for this info. I've placed an order for some molex connectors.
Fortunately the ends of the cables going to the cassette interface already have
the pins on the ends.

I may still get the pins and crimp tool if I need to create a serial cable.
I've also placed an order for a serial/ttl interface so I can try and use my
88SIOB card to connect to a terminal.

I'll give people an update when it all arraives.

Thanks,
Theo

Nice looking computer, but no boards included (memory, etc.)?

I think the the front panel's white "Altair 680" is more rare and an earlier
version than the front panels with blue lettering.

Please let us know the eBay item # when you get it listed.

Um... I hate to be a snit, but I don't think there were green
LEDs when the 680 was new. At the very least, that indicates
some repairs. Not surprising really, the power and run LEDs
would get the greatest burn time and be the most likely to fail.

maybe so but i can assure you that it has not been touched or even plugged in
except to prove that it works seance my father last played with it in 1978. if
they are replacements (witch i dont think they are) then they are at least that
old.

It looks like he did a replacement of the PROM chip that carried the operating
system software (the BUG, I think they called it). There are 4 big chip sockets
right in front of the transformers, three of which are empty but the innermost
one has a black chip mounted "piggyback" in the air above what appears to be an
old chip in the socket. The piggyback chip's in a socket connected by jumper
wires to the original socket & to a few small chips, too, it seems.

I don't recall such a mod being included in the original construction manuals.
It resembles a mod I made to my 680b to replace the original Bug software with a
(then) more popular Southwest Tech Products SWATBUG (or maybe it was SWTBUG)
operating system with a few more features. I was also able to double the clock
speed with the new chip. It also enabled me to build an interface card to use a
Southwest floppy disk controller card and RAM card.

Two transformers & fan weren't required in the basic kit package but the second
was needed if more than the basic motherboard was installed. Your two
transformers look identical; that plus the fan, make me wonder if that might be
a factory assembled 680b.

Nice catch, Bill. I completely missed those green LEDs.

I'm pretty sure that they were available in 1976 (I'm looking at a device I
built in ~77 that uses red, yellow, and green LEDs), but I'm positive that MITS
never used them in 680s or any other computer. Those 2 green ones are
definitely replacements for the originals. It wouldn't take much effort to
change them back, though. Just make sure you use LEDs that are indicator
brightness rather than the more common superbrights. I think these might be
about right:

dead and one has a voltage output that is too high. The schematic shows NPN
Power Darlingtons TIP140 & TIP145.

Looking at the boards I find a TIP141 or TIP142 may replace the TIP140. A TIP145
may be replaced with a TIP146 or TIP147.

The collector voltages are 60V, 80V, and 100V. The TIP140 and TIP145 are 60V.
Are the higher voltage parts "better" or are there bad side-effects of using a
TIP142 and TIP147. The TIP142 and TIP147 are a bit cheaper and easier to find.

In the Austrailian Altair, is their a cassette board and 88-SIOB or is there an
88-ACR. The 88-ACR is an 88-SIOB with a piggyback modem board and the combo is a
cassette interface.

Are their other traditional uses for the 88-SIOB besides an 88-ACR? I have a
spare 88-SIOB and I will try the $5 serial/TTL converter that effectively turns
an 88-SIOB into a 88-SIOA. The serial/TTL converter also looks like a good match
for MITS Attache Video boards.

Theo mentions an 88-4PIO. Has any come up with a good use for this parallel
interface board besides a MITS Hard Disk Controller? I'm guessing the 88-4PIO
might be able to interface to a bi-directional PC printer port. Is anyone
booting using an 88-4PIO

I've also placed an order for a serial/ttl interface so I can try and use my
88SIOB card to connect to a terminal.

The 88-4PIO manual shows you how to hook it up as a bi-directional parallel
port, and it should be no problem to interface it to a parallel printer such as
a Diablo or a Spinwriter. I plan do do exactly this in the next year sometime.

The standard Altair boot code lets you select your boot device via front panel
switches, and one of the choices is to boot from the 88-4PIO. This is what you
would use if you wanted to boot from the OP-80A paper tape reader
(http://www.swtpc.com/mholley/OAE80_Reader/OAE80_Index.htm) - a favorite,
low-cost reader in the mid- to late-70s.

Thanks Martin. I assume the sense switches on the Turnkey board are used to
select the boot device for those of us who don't have a front panel.

I'm not likely to boot from and old device. So, my question is more about
interfacing to a modern device. That may make my question about a PC printer
port.

A serial Qume, Diablo, or Spinwriter may be the ideal impact character printer.
Don't be misled by the 50-pin cable on some daisy/thimble printers. The 50-pin
API interface used by MITS and Vector Graphic is actually a non-RS-232 serial
interface. I have a Qume interface if you need one. I also have the prototype
Spinwriter mod if you want to add ribbon lift.

I have some 88-PIO boards and don't know what to do with them. I don't wamt a
Pertec hard disk (too big and heavy). A PC interface might allow for a PC-based
hard disk emulator or fast serial/parallel converter boot.

Martin,

The Altair Q70 interface board was designed to interface to a Qume Sprint 3
daisywheel printer via Qume's OEM parallel interface. With no modifications
other than what Tom has referred to, it could also operate the NEC 5500
SpinWriter print thimble printers that were equipped with that same interface.
Although you could conceivably use a 4PIO board for these printers, it might be
easier to find a Q70 board.

Both of those printers were also available with serial interfaces, in which case
something like a 2SIO would be the appropriate interface. MITS only sold and
supported the parallel versions.

====================

MITS Altair 8800b computer, twin floppy, has extra NOS S100 circuit board, monitor, no cords. Was purchased from Byte Me Computers , Tulsa OK contact Shawna for details 918 688-5583. The Altair 8800b - second and last of the 8800 series - was an improved version of the 8800 model of which it corrected some drawbacks.

Externally, the case had a more professional design, with a smarter back-lit front panel including modified toggle switches and five new functions allowing to read/write/Modify CPU accumulator.

Internally, motherboard could support up to 18 S-100 connectors. It was powered by a stronger power supply unit (8V - 18 amp.). The CPU board was also modified: new 8080A processor and Intel chip sets. However the 8800b remained compatible with all Altair 8800 hardware and software. Unlike the 8800, basic version also had a serial interface for Teletype, video terminal or printer connexion.

System had no bootstrap ROM. User had thus to enter a boot program using panel switches each time the system was switched on. However, every 8800 owners quikly bought or built additional card to expand RAM and ROM memory and connect external peripherals.

I am thinking of replicating the expander board for the Altair 680. If I do, I
can have a short run of them fabricated, and I guess the cost will be somewhere
between $30 and $50 each for the bare PC boards with gold-plated fingers and
solder mask.

I plan to do this sometime before Christmas. I plan to make a close copy to the
original, including trace routing, markings, etc. I am sure they won't be
absolutely identical, but they will be close.

I would be happy to have several more fabricated, if there is an interest.
Please let me know if you think that you would like one. Your price will be my
actual cost plus shipping cost. This is not a hard commitment from you - just
let me know you're interested. We'll work out the details when I know the exact
cost.

Conversely, if you have a 680 expander board that you'd like to sell me and save
me a whole bunch of work, please let me know!

Also - I will post (in just a few minutes) the contents of the following 680
paper tape images:

  * 680 Basic Version 1.1
  * 680 Assembler/Editor Version 1.0
  * 680 Editor Version 1.0

I put a header at the beginning of each file that explains what it is.

These files were made from original, never-used Altair paper tapes - I ran each
through my Teletype exactly once to produce a Master Copy of each. These files
were made from the Master Copies. I have also made working copies of each. So
far, I have tried the Basic tape, and it works perfectly.

It's really a hoot to see the Altair 680 Basic sign-on message after watching
the teletype read the tape for well over a half hour. The 1976 copyright message
is a true voice from the past!

Per earlier thread, the ALTAIR "white label" 680 sold for $2685 on Ebay.

The serial number of the system is c 11375.

I believe they all started with either "c 11nnn" or "e 11nnn" where nnn would be
the production number. Not sure what the c or e mean, but I assume kit and
assembled. But then why use c or e?
