Dear Lisa,

Thank you for your wonderful letter. I agree with you, and I would like to add
some observations which I believe will help our fellow Americans to enjoy Alamos
much more.

1) Mexicans are hot-blooded. Without their noisy weekends they would
become rebels without a cause, and might even turn this place into a
hell-hole of violence. Their "fiestas" remove all the frustration of
poverty and other oppressions out of their system. Thank God for this
escape valve!

2) There are several methods for reducing noise in the house: white noise
machines; sound-preventing earphones (although some are very expensive, I
imagine they work real well to filter out all noise); cork-lined walls, or lined
with flat egg cartons; sleeping downstairs (never upstairs where music is not
blocked by walls).

3) I have a very special letter I keep in my files to recopy and hand to
particularly noisy neighbors. This letter is composed in the sweetest of terms,
and actually has gained new friends who respect you more for having had the
confidence to communicate your painful situation. (It's *my*problem, not
theirs.) This is the opposite of showing up at their doorsteps with an angry
face and hurtful language. I can share this letter with anyone who would like to
use it; just change the signature and other particulars that individualize the
main thrust of the letter. I have used
this letter about three times over the thirty-two years I've lived here, and the
neighborhood has become much quieter and voluntarily on their part, not "a
regañadientes".

4) The ultimate solution — be like Sofia Loren in the piazza in Rome: go down
there and dance with them. Because, as St. John of the Cross so wisely said: "Do
not adapt yourself to your cross; rather, adapt your cross to yourself."

I agree that too often gringos tend to forget that we are guests in Mexico. Ear
plugs are very inexpensive. Loud noises emanating from several different sources
at competing levels are a part of life in Mexico. We just had a good example on
the Plaza during the recent festival: the carnival going full blast, competing
with the microphone on stage in front of the church.

As a Mexican friend of mine said to a noise complainer several years ago: "We
are NOT Green Valley - we are Mexico!"

And if the noise offends you, you had better get out those ear plugs, because as
another Mexican friend of mine says, "No true Mexican goes to bed on Christmas
Eve."

Marry Christmas in Mexico!

Dear fellow non-Mexican Residents of Alamos,

I finally have a strong enough opinion to voice it here.

We come to this country to live for various reasons: 1)to live on a fixed
income more comfortably than elsewhere 2)to enjoy warmer weather than places
further north and 3)to enhance our lives by immersing ourselves in a
different culture ... just to name a few.

I, for one, believe that we are guests in this country and "when in Rome".
So if Mexicans tend to stay up later than other cultures, and enjoy their
music loud, who are we, as guests here, to say they should change their
behavior to accommodate "us"? Yes, we are tax paying residents ... big deal,
the low property taxes are one of the reasons we like to live here.

I am married to a Mexican man and I hear the inside scoop from many Mexicans
who think that we non-Mexicans really have no right to tell them how they
"should" live, here in their own country and hometown.
I agree.

So please, when you meet with the Police Chief regarding things that bother
you about living here in Alamos, consider putting yourself in their shoes
and respecting the traditions of their culture.

Thanks for letting me have my say.

Peace,

Lisa

Holiday Inn (1942)

Next to "It's a Wonderful Life" and "Miracle on 34th Street", "Holiday Inn" is
one of my all time favorites. It's seldom seen in its complete form so this will
be an extra special showing.

The movie is based on an idea by Irving Berlin. A country inn opens only on the
major holidays each year. Of course, Mr. Berlin had written a song for each of
those days. Crosby and Astaire sing and dance their way through the year
including the introduction of Bing's signature "White Christmas".

This uncut version includes the controversial "Lincoln's Birthday" number as
well as a patriotic reminder that this was filmed in the early days of WWII.

The movie is all very funny, sentimental, corny, and lovely all at once. But
hey, it was 1942.

Lights will go down and show will begin promptly(!!) at 5:00.
25p admission.

Feliz Navidad everyone.

See you at the movies.

Hi Ya'll,

So ... the hotel is open! Unfortunately, the restaurant is closed 'til further
notice. The economy here in Alamos was pretty bad this summer, and I had thought
about closing to save money. However, we are open, and taking reservations.
Please come by and check out our beautiful new garden out back. We are also
ready for weddings, baptismal parties, anything that you might want with a guest
list of under 225. We feel that is the maximum number of people that we can
accommodate comfortably. So, if you have family or friends or business contacts
coming to town, please tell them we are open.

Dear Birders of Alamos:

The bird watching club of Alas de Alamos and Pronatura Noroeste would like to
invite all bird lovers to participate in the Christmas Bird Count this Sunday,
December the 20th around Alamos. This year we have people from Alamos and
Sabinito Sur, as well as foreigners with very good knowledge on birds of the
region; we are hoping to break the last record that was 172 species.

The National  Audubon Society has conducted Christmas bird counts since 1900.
Volunteers from across North America and beyond will take on to the field during
one calendar day between December 14th and January 5th to record every bird
species and individual bird encountered within a designated 15 mile diameter
circle. These records now comprise an extensive ornithological database that
enables monitoring to winter bird populations and the overall health of the
environment. If you are enthusiastic person who enjoys nature and outdoors, we
are looking for people who count bird, take notes, and share their vehicles.

At the end of the day we are planning to have a simple dinner with all the
participants when we can share our bird list and experience of the day. At 6:30
everyone is invited for a Pot Luck at Cafe del Sol. Pozole will be served; I am
coordinating everyone's contributions of your choice, including a salad, bread,
appetizers and desserts. Beverages are on your own.
