Cofounders of Slash Pine Press, Patricia White and Joseph Wood
Summer Upchurch, an intern at the Arts Council, interviews Patricia White, co-founder of Slash Pine Press, an organization housed at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa. Slash Pine Press started as an independent printing press, the brain child of Patti White and Joseph Wood. Now, the program is run by four staff members: Patti White, Joseph Wood, Lucas Southworth, and Brian Oliu. Now in its fourth year, Slash Pine achieves its goals through a community-centered internship program that can be taken as a class at the University of Alabama. Each semester two instructors and ten interns stitch one to three poetry chapbooks (handmade books sent to the program as manuscripts), plan several community events such as poetry hikes (art installations in which readers and listeners walk over several miles together, stopping at intervals to read poetry outdoors), and participate in creative exchanges with other universities’ creative writing students. The program functions as an English or Writing class, but dedicates itself to community engagement and poetic education.

2012 Arts Extravaganza

Join us for a day of celebrating the rich cultural offerings of the Black Belt in an Arts Extravaganza!
Saturday, August 11, 2012
(Tuskegee, AL) Youth and adult performance artists and visual artists from all twelve counties of Alabama’s Black Belt will come together Saturday, August 11, 2012 in Tuskegee to celebrate the region’s unique and rich cultural heritage!
The BBCF, which serves as a doorway into the culturally rich communities of the Black Belt, links together the region’s artists, cultural groups and non-profit organizations. After six years of reviewing and awarding Black Belt Arts Initiative grants, the Black Belt Community Foundation (BBCF) is proud to take the time to sit back and see firsthand the fruits of their labor. With a full day of singing, dancing, acting, and more – Saturday’s Arts Extravaganza will offer a taste of what makes the Black Belt so special.
The day will begin for the public at 9:00 am with a flag ceremony by county representatives in the Kellogg Conference Center Auditorium on the campus of Tuskegee University. Throughout the morning, guests will enjoy dance and drama performances by regional non-profits and arts agencies who have previously been awarded a BBCF Arts Grant.
Visual Artists will share their talents and examples of their work during the lunch break, from 12:00 noon until 1:30pm at the Jesse Clinton Arts Theatre. Black Belt artists will bring examples of their work and share many success stories from recent programs.
Following the Visual Arts Program, guests are invited to the Tuskegee First United Methodist Church from 1:30 pm– 3:00 pm to enjoy remarkable performances.

“Our future as an innovative country depends on ensuring that everyone has access to the arts and to cultural opportunity...But the intersection of creativity and commerce is about more than economic stimulus, it’s also about who we are as people. The President and I want to ensure that all children have access to great works of art at museums...to great poets and musicians in theatres around the country, to arts education in their schools and community workshops.” —Michelle Obama

Investing in Alabama's Black Belt's Cultural Future

The Black Belt Community Foundation serves as a doorway into the culturally rich communities of the Black Belt. We are a link to connect you with our region’s artists, cultural groups and non-profit organizations.
The Black Belt Arts Initiative, which was ignited in 2006 through BBCF’s partnership with the Youth & Cultural Committee of the Black Belt Action Commission (BBAC) and the Alabama State Council on the Arts, works strongly in its goals to promote artists and arts awareness in the Black Belt and to stimulate creativity among its youth. Since 2006, $964,500 in grants have been awarded through the Black Belt Arts Initiative Arts Grants. Among those receiving awards are museums, community theatres, festival committees and youth organizations offering concentrated arts programs.
The 2012 BBCF Arts Extravaganza brings together grant recipients from across the twelve Black Belt counties to share and showcase their works of art and their respective impacts on their communities. These artists, groups and organizations are ready to share their time, talent and treasure to further educational and cultural pursuits—“taking what they have to make what they need.”

The 2012 BBCF Arts Extravaganza

If you are in charge of putting together programming for your club, school, or organization, consider the Archives Speaker's Bureau the next time you need a compelling program on local, state, or regional history. From stories of historical intrigue like “John Wilkes Booth is Not Dead!”: Birmingham’s Louise Wooster and the Strange Afterlife of Lincoln’s Assassin to programs about art and literature like The Aesthetic of 19th Century Journalism: Newspaper Engravings as Works of Art, the Archives Speaker’s Bureau’s lecture selection is diverse to fit a variety of audiences.

We also offer instructive talks for groups that want to preserve their organization’s or family’s history. Handle with Care: Preserving Your Family Papers and Photographs introduces the fundamentals of home archiving—basic and inexpensive things you can do to ensure that your family letters, scrapbooks and photographs are preserved for the future. Old School Scrapbooking explores scrapbook keeping and keepsakes—visiting cards, photographs, letters, poems, theater programs, paper dolls, newspaper clippings—that people treasured and saved. Visit the Archives website for a full list of lectures.

At Old Alabama Town now through October 20th is "Alabama Illustrated," an exhibition of nineteenth century era engraved newspaper illustrations from the Permanent Collection of the Birmingham Public Library Archives.

In the nineteenth century Americans received news and learned about the world by reading illustrated newspapers such as Harper’s Weekly, Frank Leslie’s Illustrated Newspaper, and Ballou’s Pictorial as well as other international publications. Harper’s and Frank Leslie’s were the best known and largest circulating American papers. Publishers employed artists to draw and engrave impressively detailed images of places, events and people. From the 1850s to the 1890s, more than 250 engraved images of Alabama were published in national and international illustrated newspapers. More than 40 of these are included in the book Alabama Illustrated

The images of Alabama included here are typical of those published for many places and include portraits of political leaders, landscapes, cityscapes and events such as storms, parades, sports and work.

Stop by to view this exhibit Monday through Saturday, 9am to 4pm at 301 Columbus Street.

This exhibit provided by the Birmingham Public Library Archives.

Could Pardon Await the ‘Scottsboro Boys’ at Long Last?

To all of our Alabama Heritage subscribers who enjoyed Tom Reidy’s wonderful article, “Awaiting Justice: The Improbable Pardon of ‘Scottsboro Boy’ Clarence Norris,” in the summer issue, we have an exciting update.

The article referred to a proposal “in the governor’s office,” which requested the pardon of the remaining Scottsboro Boys. We were notified this week that the proposal had actually been sent to the Alabama Board of Pardons and Paroles at that time. But as of today, August 16, 2012, the proposal IS in the governor’s office. And now, we wait eagerly to see history made. Make sure your friends know this story and are ready to celebrate a bright ending to one of Alabama’s most painful chapters. We have made the article available to all on our website at:

Please share this with everyone in your network today and ask them to do the same.

BGS Meeting — August 25, 2012 — Baseball and Steel: Industrial League Baseball

by birminghamgenealogy

The Birmingham Genealogical Society meets the fourth Saturday of each month (ex. Nov. & Dec.) at the Downtown Birmingham Public Library. Guests are always welcome!

Next meeting: Saturday, August 25th at 2 p.m.; Board Meeting at 1:15 p.m.

Meeting Room: Arrington Auditorium, 4th Floor, Linn-Henley Building

Speaker:  Joe Holley,  Industrial League Baseball enthusiast and historian

Program Topic: Baseball and Steel:  Industrial League Baseball

Joe Holley is a native of Walker County and retired after a lengthy career with the Alabama Department of Transportation. While in college, Mr. Holley took a history course on techniques of research including conducting oral histories.  Because of longtime family involvement, he chose local industrial league baseball as the subject of his research project.  He initially interviewed old timers who dated back to the turn of the 20th Century.  In the intervening years, he has continued his research and has become an "expert"  on the local industrial league teams and players.

War of 1812 Symposium

The first in a series of symposia commemorating the bicentennial of the War of 1812 and the Creek War of 1813-4 will be held on Saturday, August 25 in the Special Collections & Department of the Ralph Brown Draughon Library. "...Toward a Larger Stage: The War of 1812, the Creek War and the Idea of America,” will focus on the pivotal events of two hundred years ago in Alabama, the Southeast, the United States, and the world.

The first symposium will focus on connecting the audience to the compelling and significant events that occurred in 1812, the first year of the larger War of 1812 and an important precursor to the conflict building between Creek nationalists, the Red Stick faction, and Anglo-American settlers culminating with the Creek War and the ultimate Battle of Horseshoe Bend in March of 1814. The program will place these events in a local, national, and international context, as well as the cultural context of Indians, Americans, British and Canadians.

This 1812 bicentennial symposium is free and open to the public. Seating is limited and refreshments will be provided.

Subject: [Becoming Alabama] Becoming Alabama Event Announcement Deadlines for Alabama Heritage (Winter Issue) -- OCTOBER 1, 2012

Hello, everyone. For all who want to announce Becoming Alabama events in the winter issue of Alabama Heritage, please take note of the following:
·         The deadline for text for the winter issue is Oct. 1, 2012. Text should be sent to me at reyno031@....
·         We are accepting announcements for events happening from Feb. 2013 -- June 2013.
We will publish all that can fit in the space we have reserved, beginning with the earliest. If we run out of text space, we will begin by cutting items that happen after mid-June (which can appear in our spring issue). But we will publish all, if possible.
·         Events must have some relevance to the Becoming Alabama initiative or themes of the Creek War, Civil War, and civil rights movement.
·         Each event must appear in the format and within the text limits presented here:
March 10, 7:00 p.m.
TITLE OF YOUR EVENT
Text describing your event should include contact information and any admission fees. The body of this text should be no more than 250 characters.

·         We reserve the right to trim the announcements if absolutely necessary to fit our space requirements. We will take great care to see that nothing essential is cut.

The deadlines for upcoming issues will be October 1 (winter), January 1 (spring), April 1 (summer), July 1 (fall).

Thanks so much for your participation,
Susan Reynolds

New Workshops!

Lessons from Pop Culture: Sending Your Readers on an Unforgettable Thrill Ride, with Myra McEntire
We read to experience new worlds, to be transported, to escape. Careful pacing and thoughtful plotting can propel readers through a story, inciting them to come back for more. Using tips from authors Blake Snyder, Christopher Vogler, and James Scott Bell, as well as examples from the television showThe Vampire Diaries, and The Hunger Games book series, we will explore ways to strengthen your plot and crank your pace to breakneck speed. Your readers will never go to bed on time again.

Voice: How to Find Yours and Use It to Keep Your Audience Hooked, with Myra McEntire
Many readers purchase a novel based on the first page alone, so the right voice can make or break you. Voice is difficult to define, but we know it when we see it. In this session, we’ll study examples of strong voice, and discover ways to develop voice through brainstorming, journaling, and mind maps. Learn how to apply your own personality to your work, and how to “rob” the personalities of friends, family, and acquaintances to make each of your characters unique.
Labor of Love: The Creative Process from Conception to Completion, with Debra Moffitt
Writing comes from a mystical process of creation. Words appear on the page almost as if by magic. In this playful, interactive workshop, author, Debra Moffitt, takes writers on an exploration of the creative process from the birth of an idea to its launch into the world. She offers tools to tap into powerful resources of creative energy, get structured, create a writing discipline that works and get you on the way to finding the right agent and the perfect publisher. We'll also explore some basics of platforms and book proposals.

Visual Arts Fellowship Recipient Jess Marie Walker
ASCA intern Summer Upchurch interviews Individual Fellowship Recipient Jess Marie Walker about her life as an artist and an educator. Inspired by nature, music, and the art of public installation pieces, Jess Marie's background varies as much as her interests. Her work is highly collaborative and has been brought to fruition by HoWaYaDa, an artist collective, and by Pretty Much Collective. Her pieces range from a large-scale collaborative and interactive musical piece (where artists play kettles, rocks, and whatever is on-hand) to a smaller-scale collaborative piece celebrating the beauty of line-drawing and mountains. Her experiments with sound, form, and public exposure have been hosted in museums in Birmingham, Minneapolis, Long Island, Brooklyn, and Fairhope, among others. She currently lives in Montevallo with her youngest son.

2012 Auburn Writers Conference

It’s been said that there are only two kinds of stories after all—the journey and the homecoming.  One implies a roving spirit.  The other?  A soul that longs for a familiar landscape.  Either way, the writer is a wanderer on the page and in the imagination.  The Winding Road: Travel, Identity and the Search for Voice invites writers and readers who hear the beckoning call of discovery and of new cultures, as well as those who believe that perhaps the greatest voyage is an exploration of the places we call home, to join us this October 12 and 13, 2012, in Auburn, Alabama, for a writers conference like no other.  Let your writing journey of a thousand miles begin with us.

The Auburn Writers Conference offers instruction, practice, perspective, and community for both established and emerging writers. For information about workshops and visit authors, please visit the website.

Subject: UAB Fellowship Announcement

The Historical Collections (HC) unit of Lister Hill Library of the Health Sciences, University of Alabama at Birmingham, announces Reynolds Associates Research Fellowships in the History of the Health Sciences for 2013. In conjunction with the unit’s friends group, the Reynolds Associates, HC is pleased to announce the availability of short-term awards of up to $1,000 to individual researchers studying one or more aspects of the history of the health sciences during the 2013 calendar year.

Intended to support research using the HC unit as a historical resource, the fellowship requires the on-site use of at least one of the unit’s three components, which are the Alabama Museum of the Health Sciences, Reynolds Historical Library and UAB Archives. Anyone who wishes to use HC for historical research may apply, regardless of his or her academic status.   Fellowships are awarded to individual applicants, not to institutions, as awarded funds are meant to help offset the costs associated with visiting and utilizing HC and not for institutional overhead.

Information about the fellowship application process can be found on the web at http://www.uab.edu/reynolds/fellow. The application deadline is December 31, 2012, and awards will be announced by February 28, 2013.

Subject: [Becoming Alabama] Becoming Alabama Event Announcement Deadlines for Alabama Heritage (Winter Issue) -- OCTOBER 1, 2012

Just a reminder!...
