Alabama in Africa
Booker T. Washington, the German Empire, and the Globalization of the New South
Andrew Zimmerman
To read the entire book description or the introduction, please visit: http://press.princeton.edu/titles/9190.html
In 1901, the Tuskegee Institute, founded by Booker T. Washington, sent an expedition to the German colony of Togo in West Africa, with the purpose of transforming the region into a cotton economy similar to that of the post-Reconstruction American South. Alabama in Africa explores the politics of labor, sexuality, and race behind this endeavor, and the economic, political, and intellectual links connecting Germany, Africa, and the southern United States.
"This book . . . is incontestably a major contribution. It demonstrates decisively the value of the vanguard trend that is the internationalizing of the African-American experience."--Gerald Horne, Journal of American History

String Notes and Brush Strokes

Margo Russell travels to Bluegrass Pickins and Singings around the South, and many of her pieces depict scenes from the Henderson Bluegrass Festival.

"I like the sounds of Bluegrass Music, so much so, that for 25 years I have sought out  gatherings of these
extraordinary artists 'pickin and singin'. I become part of the musical circle, the notes lead my pencil and brush strokes. We make art in situ." - Margo Russell

Margo Russell was born in Andalusia , Alabama,t
o a hispanic mother from the Rio Grande Valley in Texas and a father from Ramer, Alabama.Currently she lives in the old family homeplace in Andalusia, makes art and teaches art workshops for children and adults. Art of the State
June 6 - July 27
Some of the most innovative Alabama art comes from faculty at the state's colleges and universities, and the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art is highlighting that work in a statewide exhibition that has traveled to the Johnson Center for the Arts in Troy.

"This exhibition celebrates contemporary visual art and displays the experimental and creative work of studio artists who teach at Alabama's colleges and universities," said Stephanie Qualls, curator of education and exhibits at the Tennessee Valley Museum.

"The Tennessee Valley Museum has done a wonderful job capturing the creative talents of the works of these artists." said Morgan Drinkard, Interim Director of the Johnson Center for the Arts. "We are honored to have these works on display, especially featuring Troy University professors Sara Dismukes, Russell Everett and Beverly West Leach."

Sara Dismukes, assistant professor of art and design at Troy University, has "Two Cups" on display which is a painting in gouache and watercolor on paper. "I tend to use observation as a starting point but encode the work with metaphors of relationships and memories." Said Dismukes.

Russell Everett, adjunct professor of drawing at Troy University, has "Equus Knot" on display. Everett says this piece is a metaphorical portrait about a woman whose personality has been completely overwhelmed by an addiction to her occupation with a "knot" caused by the permeating concern with her "equine" charges.

Beverly West Leach, lecturer of art and design at Troy University has a hand-colored woodblock print titled "Formation Arch" on display. She says, "Nature's rhythm, flux, flow and space intrigue me."

Announcing the New AHA Podcast Series

Dear AHA Member,

The AHA is pleased to announce the first two programs in its new AHA Podcast Series.

Marty Olliff interviewed Dr. Dan Haulman, co-winner of the 2012 Milo B. Howard Award, who discusses his Alabama Review article, "The Tuskegee Airmen and the 'Never Lost A Bomber' Myth."  The interview is ca. 17 minutes long and occurred on May 11, 2012.

Olliff also interviewed Mary Ann Neely, winner of the AHA's 2012 Clinton Jackson Coley Award.  Ms. Neely talks about her new book, The Works of Matthew Blue, Montgomery's First Historian, in her 15-minute interview recorded on June 1, 2012.

Both podcasts are available at the AHA website:  http://www.archives.alabama.gov/aha/podcasts.html

We plan two more interviews for the near future and welcome your suggestions for future programming.  Drop an email to molliff@....

At its June meeting in Montgomery, the Alabama State Council on the Arts (ASCA) announced recipients of its new fellowships. Chantel Acevado and Adam Vines were named Literary Fellows for FY 2013.

Acevedo of Auburn was awarded a Fellowship in the amount of $5,000 for Literature. Acevedo’s engaging style draws the reader in. Her work is versatile over a spectrum of genres. She has received many awards including the 2006 Latino International Book Award for Best Historical Fiction. In addition to her responsibilities as a professor of Creative Writing at Auburn University, she has shown great leadership and service to the state’s literary community, especially through her work organizing the annual Auburn Writers Conference and co-editing the Southern Humanities Review.

Vines of Birmingham also was awarded a Literary Fellowship. Vines writes with authority and specificity, yet is also able to display a quality of vulnerability. His poems are accessible, solid, grounded in nature, quiet, and considered. He has had an impressive career with published works, and his magazine publications are numerous.

11. George Washington Carver Digital Collection
http://www.lib.iastate.edu/preserv/cdm/gwcarver.html

George Washington Carver was many things to many people: at various
points in his life he was a scholar, teacher, inventor, and student.
From humble roots in southwestern Missouri, Carver went on to wear
many hats. This fine digital collection from the Iowa State University
brings together over 200 photographs, letters, and other items held in
the ISU archives. The majority of the correspondence here is between
Carver and his mentor, Dr. Louis Pammel, and their words cover a wide
variety of topics, including peanuts, scientific experimentation, and
so on. There are many wonderful photos of Carver, including his
graduation photo from 1893, taken the year before he formally
graduated from the Iowa Agricultural College. Visitors who might be
less familiar with the contours of Carver life may also wish to read
the narrative essay on his life by Toby Fishbein. [KMG]

Subject: Job Opening at Alabama Heritage--Please pass the word.

Dear friends and colleagues:

Last week we posted a job opening for a full-time, salaried “Digital
Media Editor,” who can take Alabama Heritage into new online and
digital territory. We will be posting ads in the state’s newspapers,
but I felt that you all might have a better chance of getting the word
to the best candidates. The person does not have to be a history
expert, but enjoying history is a plus. More importantly, I need a
great left-brain-right-brain blend--someone who can figure out the
technical side of things (or negotiate with others to help), while
making online presentations attractive. The person needs to be able to
write and edit, with a marketing orientation. A bachelor’s degree in a
related field is required.

If you would spread it to your circles, I would appreciate it. Please
ask them to apply to the UA job site (jobs.ua.edu), rather than
directly to me. The job is posted under the burdensome and off-putting
official university title of “IT Technical Assistant II,” but the
title the magazine will use is “Digital Media Editor.” Please tell
candidates not to be intimidated by the techno-language of the online
job ad. We only have control of the “department-specific requirements”
language in that system.

Here is the newspaper ad—with much more detail available in the online posting:

Digital Media Editor

Alabama Heritage magazine seeks creative, technically skilled editor
for development of digital and online assets.
Tuscaloosa/Northport-based.  Apply online at http://jobs.ua.edu (see
IT Technical Specialist II—Req 006888) by 7/9/12. EOE/AA.

Thanks,

Donna Baker

AWC 2012
The Auburn Writers Conference offers instruction, practice, perspective, and community for both established and emerging writers.

Save the date!

It’s been said that there are only two kinds of stories after all—the journey and the homecoming.  One implies a roving spirit.  The other?  A soul that longs for a familiar landscape.  Either way, the writer is a wanderer on the page and in the imagination.  The Winding Road: Travel, Identity and the Search for Voice invites writers and readers who hear the beckoning call of discovery and of new cultures, as well as those who believe that perhaps the greatest voyage is an exploration of the places we call home, to join us this October 12 and 13, 2012, in Auburn, Alabama, for a writers conference like no other. Let your writing journey of a thousand miles begin with us.

Registration
  • Full Registration: $200
  • Friday Only: $125
  • Saturday Only: $75
  • Students: $40
Registration will open July 1. Please contact us if you have any questions.

Creative Submissions

Conference attendees are invited to read their short fiction, creative nonfiction and/or poetry. To be considered for a reading slot, please submit a 300-500 word excerpt of creative writing appropriate for a 15-minute presentation by August 1, 2012. Please include a brief cover letter that indicates connection to the conference’s theme.

Alabama students bring home Bronze Medal

from National History Day competition

Dear AHA Members,

Please celebrate with the AHA the success of  Katie Kirk of Tuskegee and Heather Connelly of Auburn, who won a bronze medal in the Senior Group Performance category at the National History Day competition at the University of Maryland on June 14.

Their entry, entitled "Tragedy of Errors: America's Hypocritical Reaction to Artistic Diplomacy" was the culmination of months of intensive historical research, which was then turned into a script about a failed Cold War 1940s art exhibition, Advancing American Art, partly owned by the Jule Collins Smith Museum in Auburn.

Alabama's other Senior division Group Performance from Phenix City's Central High School, came in 5th place, completing the best ever all around finish for Alabama in all NHD categories.  Other qualifying students came from Lowndes County, Talladega, and other Phenix City schools.

In all, seventy nine teams in their category from all 50 states and several international NHD affiliates displayed their work for panels of judges over two days.

Each fall over half a million students nationwide start working on the year-long National History Day program (www.nhd.org) , competing in a series of history contests that begin at the local level.

Congratulations to these exceptional students!

Katie Kirk and Heather Connelly bring modern art to life in their NHD Bronze Medal Performance.

Rising Up: Hale Woodruff's Murals from Talladega College
http://www.high.org/Art/Exhibitions/Rising-Up-Hale-Woodruff.aspx

In 1938, Talladega College commissioned Hale Woodruff, an African-American
muralist, to paint six murals that were installed in the Savery Library on
campus, where they remained for more than 70 years. In 2011, the murals were
removed from the walls of the Library as part of a collaborative project
between Talladega College and the High Museum to conserve the murals, which
are on display at the Museum until September 2012. At the website, visitors
can not only see images of conservators literally peeling the murals off the
library walls, but also examine digital versions of the artwork. For
example, zoom in on the Portrait of Cinqué, one of the leaders of the
Amistad rebellion, to see biographical information, or follow another link
to see a comparison of the figure of a dead mutineer with Géricault's "The
Raft of the Medusa," an art historical icon with which Woodruff would have
been familiar. Other murals in the series are: The Trial of the Amistad
Captives, The Repatriation of the Freed Captives, The Underground Railroad,
Opening Day at Talladega College, and The Building of Savery Library. [DS]

Subject: University of Alabama's Summersell Center Announces Book Prize Winner

The Frances S. Summersell Center for the Study of the South is pleased to announce the winner of our first biennial Deep South Book Prize is James C. Giesen, for his book, Boll Weevil Blues: Cotton, Myth, and Power in the American South (Chicago). In demonstrating how the supposed agricultural crisis created by the boll weevil's infiltration of southern cotton was a product of culture and imagination as much as actual crop damage, Giesen's work is a stunning example of how sometimes much of what we think we know about a subject is just flat wrong. It also reveals more complex and compelling truths. Our hearty congratulations to Mr. Giesen, who is assistant professor of history at Mississippi State University and director of the Center for the History of Agriculture, Science, and the Environment in the South.

Receiving honorable mentions from the Summersell Center are four additional books, each of which provided the book prize committee with hard choices and each of which is deserving of praise in its own right. They are, in alphabetical order:

Wayne Flynt, Keeping the Faith: Ordinary People, Extraordinary Lives. A Memoir (Alabama)

Danielle L. McGuire, At the Dark End of the Street: Black Women, Rape, and Resistance-a New History of the Civil Rights Movement from Rosa Parks to the Rise of Black Power (Vintage)

Justin A. Nystrom, New Orleans after the Civil War: Race, Politics, and a New Birth of Freedom (Johns Hopkins)

Paul Quigley, Shifting Grounds: Nationalism and the American South, 1848-1865 (Oxford)
