Myth, Memory, and the Haunted Muse
Register Now!

The second annual Auburn Writers Conference is fast approaching--don't miss it!

This year’s theme, “Myth, Memory, and the Haunted Muse,” considers the ways that writers use the idea of "the haunted" in their work—either literally or figuratively, as in the memories, histories, people, and places that haunt, and hence propel, characters.

The 2011 conference will feature three New York Times bestselling authors: keynote speaker Joshilyn Jackson (Gods in Alabama, Backseat Saints), Arts and Humanities Distinguished Speaker Mark Kurlansky (What?, Edible Stories, The World Without Fish), and Rachel Hawkins (Hex Hall, Demonglass).

Other visiting authors include young adult novelists Roger Reid (Longleaf, Space) and Victoria Schwab (The Near Witch), fiction writer Evelina Galang (Her Wild American Self, One Tribe), essayist Patricia Foster (All the Lost Girls:  Confessions of a Southern Daughter), Richard Goodman, founder of the New York Writers Workshop (A New York Memoir, Soul of Creative Writing), Jeanie Thompson, director of the Alabama Writers’ Forum and acclaimed poet, and Wendy Reed, television and radio producer, and author of An Accidental Memoir: How I Killed Someone and Other Stories.

Visit our website to register.

Subject: [Becoming Alabama] Becoming Alabama Event Announcement Deadlines for Alabama Heritage (Winter Issue) -- OCTOBER 1, 2011

Hello, everyone. For all who want to announce Becoming Alabama events in the winter issue of Alabama Heritage, please take note of the following:

·         The deadline for text for the winter issue is Oct. 1, 2011. Text should be sent to me at reyno031@....

·         We are accepting announcements for events happening from Feb. 2012 -- June 2012.

We will publish all that can fit in the space we have reserved, beginning with the earliest. If we run out of text space, we will begin by cutting items that happen after mid-June (which can appear in our spring issue). But we will publish all, if possible.

·         Events must have some relevance to the Becoming Alabama initiative or themes of the Creek War, Civil War, and civil rights movement.

·         Each event must appear in the format and within the text limits presented here:

March 10, 7:00 p.m.

TITLE OF YOUR EVENT

Text describing your event should include contact information and any admission fees. The body of this text should be no more than 250 characters.

·         We reserve the right to trim the announcements if absolutely necessary to fit our space requirements. We will take great care to see that nothing essential is cut.

The deadlines for upcoming issues will be October 1 (winter), January 1 (spring), April 1 (summer).

Thanks so much for your participation,

Susan Reynolds

“I am absolutely thrilled and honored to receive this award—particularly this award named in honor of my idol Harper Lee,” said Flagg.

“This year we have the advantage of announcing the 2012 Harper Lee Award recipient very early,” said Jeanie Thompson, executive director of the Alabama Writers’ Forum. “Fannie’s fans will be happy to know they can register for the Symposium right away by contacting Alabama Southern Community College at mbmurphy@....”

The honor is presented annually by Alabama Southern Community College at the Symposium. It is made possible through a generous grant from George F. Landegger, chairman, Parsons and Whittemore.

The Library of Congress recently named Philip Levine as the eighteenth U.S. Poet Laureate Consultant for Poetry for 2011-2012. He will assume his duties on October 17 with a reading at the library’s Coolidge Auditorium. Levine succeeds W.S. Merwin.

"Philip Levine is one of America’s great narrative poets," Librarian of Congress James H. Billington said in a press release issued by the library. "His plainspoken lyricism has, for half a century, championed the art of telling ‘The Simple Truth’—about working in a Detroit auto factory, as he has, and about the hard work we do to make sense of our lives."

The author of twenty collections of poems, Levine is professor emeritus in the English Department at California State University, Fresno.

Using Primary Sources in the Classroom

We often receive messages from teachers who are struggling to provide their students with primary sources and other instructional resources due to recent budget constraints.  All of the lesson plans that are available on our web site are FREE and each one uses primary sources that can engage students on a wide range of historical topics.

This month, we have lessons on Slave Codes in 1833, secession, convict leasing, and an Alabama connection to Texas.   Remember to preview all of the lessons to make sure that they are age and grade appropriate for your students.  Check out the names of the authors to see if they work in your school or school system!

We would like to get your comments and suggestions about the lesson plans.  A Feedback button is located at the bottom of the lesson plan index for your convenience.

Civil War Symposium on Mobile Campaign Planned

Historic Blakeley State Park is organizing a symposium on the Mobile Campaign, which closed out the American Civil War, for historians and the general public on March 2-4, 2012. Symposium chairman and coordinator is military historian James W. Williams, Ph.D. Potential panelists and presenters are invited to contact Dr. Williams at 1oldhistorian@....

Aspects of the Mobile Campaign selected as subjects of the symposium include: the strategic importance of Mobile, Confederate defenses of the Mobile area, the Battle of Mobile Bay, sieges of Fort Morgan and Fort Gaines, advances of Union forces to Spanish Fort and Fort Blakely, naval operations in Mobile Bay, the siege of Spanish Fort, the fall of Blakeley, and the final surrender of the Western division of the Army of the Confederacy in Mobile County in May 1865. Presentations on other aspects, including documentation of the campaign and participating units, and preservation and interpretation of related sites, are welcome.

The March 2012 symposium is thought to be the region's first and most comprehensive single conference on the Mobile Campaign. Covering the period of January 1864 through May 1865, the Mobile Campaign symposium is offered by Historic Blakeley State Park as part of the national historical studies of the Civil War that began this year and will continue through 2015.

The Range of Writing Today

At the Grand Festival of Art and Books

The Alabama Writers’ Forum invites readers and writers to take part in the Grand Festival of Art and Books, Saturday & Sunday, October 8-9, in Fairhope, Alabama. The 29-year-old festival of arts adds a book component this year on Saturday, thanks to the vision of Karin Wilson, proprietor of Page & Palette bookstore.

“We applaud Karin’s idea to introduce writers to the Festival this year!” said
Jeanie Thompson, Executive Director of the Forum. “During a weekend when art lovers, bird watchers, and sports enthusiasts converge on the Eastern Shore of Mobile Bay, literature is invited to the party. From award-winning children’s authors to cookbook creators to innovative publishers and poets, this year’s new Festival of Books offers something for every reader. We are happy to take part and hope people will stop by the Alabama Writers’ Forum’s information table and plan to hear the Forum’s panel discussion,The Range of Writing Today, on Saturday at 2 p.m. We have a great line-up of Alabama writers and publishers.”

Kirk Curnutt, recently elected AWF board president and author of Dixie Noir, will serve as panel moderator. Panelists include Ashley Gordon, proprietor, Mockingbird Publishing, whose latest title is Year of Our Lord; Linda Busby Parker, proprietor, Excalibur Press, author of Seven Laurels, and editor of Christmas Is a Season!; and Sue Brannan Walker, Alabama State Poet Laureate and author of She Said.

The Alabama Writers' Forum is a partnership program of the
Alabama State Council on the Arts.

October is Arts & Humanities Month

The College of Liberal Arts at Auburn University invites you to join its faculty, staff, and students in celebration of National Arts & Humanities Month.

The arts and humanities hold an abiding value to us as citizens and human beings. They help us understand ourselves as individuals and as people who see the world differently. They help us talk about fundamental values and tough issues.

The arts and humanities teach us to think creatively, critically, and independently; to communicate effectively, and to respect individual and cultural differences. They foster an understanding of the human condition and a desire for free exchange of ideas. They invoke social change. They uplift.

Throughout October, the College of Liberal Arts will host performances, lectures, exhibitions, and other special events that offer opportunities to learn about, experience, and participate in the arts and humanities.

To:  All Alabama Librarians

From: Rebecca Mitchell, Director, Alabama Public Library Service

Subject: Alabama Public Library Service public survey

We at APLS want to ask citizens to share their views on public libraries by completing an online survey during October and November 2011.  We are seeking your help in distributing information about this survey to the people you work with and serve so that they can have an opportunity to respond.  Their opinions will help shape the future of our public libraries.  This is an important step in getting as much input from the public as possible as we develop our next five-year plan.

The survey can be taken at any computer with Internet access (respondents must be at least 19).  People can submit the survey from their home, office or library.  The survey will be available through November 15 at this link:
https://www.surveymonkey.com/s/APLSpublic

Please put this article about the survey on your website.  It includes the link to the survey: Website Article

In addition, this is a link to a promotional flyer: Printable Flyer.  Hang it in your library and around your institution.  Get people interested in talking about libraries.  Take the survey yourself.

If someone at your library is unable to access the survey online, please print a copy for them using this link: Printable Survey.  The mailing address is printed on the last page of the survey.

The University of Alabama School of Library and Information Studies is collecting the survey data.  Your opinion and your community’s opinions matter.  This is important to us all.  Thanks for your help.

For more information contact Jim Smith at APLS, phone (800) 723-8459 extension 3907, email
jsmith@..., 6030 Monticello Drive, Montgomery, AL 36130-6000.

To help promote the upcoming Alabama Folklife Association event In Harmony: The Gospel Quartet Music Tradition of Jefferson County, this radio program is a rebroadcast with Joey Brackner interviewing film maker Robert Clem about his project the Gospel Highway. In the second half of the program Joey interviews Auguster Maul, lead singer for the Delta Aires Quartet.
Following the lecture at the In Harmony event in Birmingham on Saturday November 5th, 2011, guests will enjoy a screening of The Jefferson County Sound: Alabamas Black Gospel Quartets by Robert Clem of Alabama. The Jefferson County Sound profiles five Alabama quartets who are still performing today: The Blind Boys of Alabama, Fairfield Four (based in Nashville but led by Jefferson County native Isaac Freeman), Four Eagles, Delta-Aires and Birmingham Sunlights. Robert Clem, A graduate of Anniston High School and Birmingham-Southern College, later received an M.F.A. from NYU Graduate Film School. He has been a fellow at the Sundance Institute writer/directors lab and his films include Company K; Big Jim Folsom: The Two Faces of Populism; Eugene Walter: Last of the Bohemians; Malbis Plantation: From Greece to America, and In the Wake of the Assassins. After the film, singers of two generations will participate in a roundtable discussion to be recorded for documentation and preservation purposes. The day will end with the concert to feature The Pillars and The Birmingham Sunlights. The performance will begin at 5:30 p.m. The Birmingham Sunlights have toured nationally and internationally as ambassadors of the singing style and the members of The Pillars include Norman Wooding, Jr., Reverend Don Solomon, Henry Burton, and Bob Friedman, all of whom have over fifty years of experience singing, recording, and performing.
