As the administrator of our homeschooling umbrella, I attended a fieldtrip with
35 homeschooled students and parents on Thursday. I will collect photos from
all who attended and share soon. The "windshield" survey upon parking in my
designated space was enough to make one see the importance of understanding
history and current agendas as well. I parked in the second spot alongside the
curb facing the front steps of the Capital Building. My partner in front and an
accumulating line of 7 other cars behind me. We waited, wondering which route
to take to enter. The front steps were dotted with people, cameras, and posters.
The NAACP was rallying in regards to the Health Care Bill. A line of additional
cars pulled in on the opposite side of the curb from us. They seemed to be
joining our fieldtrip... but I did not know who they were. For the benefit of
our children's safety, I approached the people who erected from the leading
vehicle. "We are with the Tea-Party", they explained. "Where are we meeting?"
I wasn't sure which would be the best learning experience for our children,
entering the building, or watching the collision of these two groups with
opposing views on Health Care. Of course, we entered the building, but
apparently anxiety was obvious to our youth. We completed the entire tour
dodging political battles and guarding our children from any unexpected acts of
violence that may result. After completing the tour, my daughter asked our
guide, "Is Mr. Riley going to say hello?" She was told "No, he is a very busy
man and must not be disturbed so remember to keep quiet." My daughter held her
tongue from reply, and then approached the security guard at the door as we were
leaving. "Will you give my poster to Mr. Riley?" "I made it just for him."
The security guard complimented her hard work and pulled her aside. I listened
as he explained that our governor was out of town. He suggested she take her
poster down the hall as he pointed to another security guard. "That man will
call the governor's secretary out, and be certain that he receives your poster."
She smiled and hurried down the hall. The guard down on this end was not as
polite, but did call the secretary. She presented through the door and
explained that the governor was in a meeting with many other important people.
My daughter ask if she would make sure Mr. Riley knew that she had made the
poster and that she had memorized the Alabama Creed in honor of her state. She
was then asked to recite the creed and did so with no mistakes. She was
presented with a coin from the governor's office. She proudly displayed this in
front of the others. My husband asked her what she had learned from the
fieldtrip when we returned home. "I learned that the governor doesn't like to
be bothered by children and has everyone lie for him... maybe that is why there
was going to be an argument on the steps and we had to sneak passed all the
people to get in."

Modern Alabama
Presented by Harvey H. Jackson

How do you define "Modern Alabama?" Is it just a slice of time - 1945 to the present - in which Alabama became something it wasn't before? Will a comparison of then (pre-1945) and since, really define us as "modern?"

The Mid-South Chapter of the Railway & Locomotive Historical Society
invites you to join us this Saturday at the Leeds (AL) Depot for a
professional video presentation on the move of Frisco steam locomotive
#4018 from the Fairgrounds to Sloss Furnace.

Mountain Brook Mayor Terry Oden will introduce the program, Mayor Oden
was instrumental in raising funds for the move and saving #4018, which
otherwise would likely have been scrapped on site. The project was a
remarkable feat of logistics requiring a great deal of teamwork and
coordination.

For those not familiar with Frisco #4018, the USRA 2-8-2 Light
Mikado-type of the "War Baby" class was ordered during World War
I by the United States Railroad Administration (USRA) and built in
October 1919 by the Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio. No. 4018 was
purchased by the St. Louis—San Francisco Railway ("Frisco")
in 1923, and the "Mike" spent most of its career hauling freight
through the heavily industrialized territory between East Thomas Yard
and Bessemer.

No. 4018's last run took place on February 29, 1952 when the
locomotive was moved to the Fairgrounds over the adjacent Atlantic Coast
Line Railroad (ACL). Over the next 57 years, Frisco employees and groups
of local rail enthusiasts attempted to maintain No. 4018's cosmetic
appearance, but exposure to the elements and lack of security
accelerated the locomotive's deterioration.

In 2008, as the City of Birmingham planned redevelopment of the
fairgrounds area, funds were raised to move the locomotive to a more
secure location. Through the hard work of Mayor Oden and others, the
move to Sloss Furnace took place during the period of February 19 -21,
2009.

Please join us on Saturday, November 14 at 2pm as Mayor Oden chronicles
the successful effort to relocate and preserve this important part of
our local railroad history. For more information, contact Marvin Clemons
at 205-836-3457.

In Memoriam: Barbara Robinette Moss

Barbara Robinette Moss (photo by Marion Ettlinger)

Barbara Robinette Moss (photo by Marion Ettlinger)

Anniston native Barbara Robinette Moss, author of the memoirs Change Me Into Zeus's Daughter and Fierce, died Oct. 9 in Kansas City, Mo. She was fifty-four.

Moss' first memoir made The New York Times bestseller's list, and she was featured in a story in People for her contributions to the genre. Moss was also a celebrated visual artist.

Change Me Into Zeus's Daughter relates the story of how Moss' family endured severe poverty due to the alcoholism suffered by her father. Her mother, in spite of their impoverished life, taught her children to quote poetry, to study the art masters, and to pursue all avenues of artistic creativity. Both memoirs are set in Anniston and published by Scribner.

"I was deeply impressed with the evocative power of Change Me Into Zeus's Daughter, and just as impressed with Moss' powers of forgiveness," said Don Noble, host of the literary TV talk show Bookmark. "Her memoir was honest but without rancor for what was in many ways a horrific childhood. Her passing is a great loss to the Alabama literary community."

"Barbara was an elegant, sophisticated woman," added Anniston author and long-time friend Sherry Kughn. "She was tall and shapely and had a funny, practical personality. The world of memoir writing was improved by her contributions."

"I am overwhelmed by grief at Barbara's death," said Auburn University scholar Wayne Flynt, who interviewed Moss twice in recent years. "We are richer for her life but much poorer for the loss of such a great talent at writing and art."

Moss began writing while in graduate school. In 1996, she won the gold medal for personal essay in the William Faulkner Creative Writing Competition, sponsored by The Pirate's Alley Faulkner Society in New Orleans. Her winning story, "Near the Center of the Earth," became the first chapter for Change Me into Zeus's Daughter. After publication, Moss won the 2002 Alabama Author Award for Nonfiction, sponsored by the Alabama Library Association, and the Iowa Authors Award 2000, sponsored by the Library Association of Des Moines Foundation.

"I declared myself an artist when I was in the second grade," wrote Moss. "Looking back, I realize it was a way to connect with my mother, a small part of her that one of my brothers and sisters hadn't already claimed."

Moss received an MFA in visual art from Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, and a BFA from Ringling School of Art and Design in Sarasota, Fla. She participated in over one hundred juried art exhibitions, including the Los Angeles Printmaking Society Contemporary American Printmakers and the Museum of American Art Drawing Midwest.

Moss is survived by her husband Duane DeRaad; her son Jason Freeman, his wife Lindsey, and their daughter Maren; and stepdaughters Kristen Gilkeson and Kara Santos.

Moss wrote of her experience studying and writing screenplays in the Fall 2005 issue of First Draft. The Alabama Writers' Forum extends its deepest sympathy to the family and friends of this talented writer, artist, and friend.

Writing Our Stories: An Anti-Violence Creative Writing Program, a partnership of the Alabama Department of Youth Services (DYS) and the Alabama Writers' Forum, entered its thirteenth year this fall with the release of three new student anthologies of poems, stories, and memoirs.

Alabama State University men's basketball coach Lewis Jackson tipped-off this year's events at the book release for Open the Door12 on the DYS Mt. Meigs campus on October 22. "It takes a certain amount of discipline of creativity of motivation to accomplish what you've done with this book," said Jackson, addressing the newly-published student writers. "You've stuck with the program, and that's a strong accomplishment." Teaching writer Marlin Barton, who edited the anthology, encouraged his students to continue their work as he introduced them. Each student then read selections of his poetry and signed copies of the book for the assembled students, faculty, family, and guests.

On October 29, Alabama State Senator Linda Coleman (D-District 20, Jefferson) continued the celebration at the book release event for Keep It Real on the DYS Chalkville Campus. "Where you came from has nothing to do with where you're going," said Sen. Coleman, addressing the young writers. "You can succeed in life, but it's up to you. The world is waiting for what you have to offer." Teaching writer Priscilla Hancock Cooper then introduced two newly published authors, who read from the anthology. They later signed copies of the book at a reception held in their honor in the school's media center.

Alabama State Representative James Fields Jr. (D-District 12, Cullman) delivered the keynote address for the release of Courage Is on the DYS Vacca Campus on November 4. "Your words move others," said Rep. Fields, addressing the student writers, "so make sure that your words that others hear move them in the right direction." Teaching writer and anthology editor Tony Crunk introduced four newly published authors and his new students, who read for the guests. The assembly then adjourned to the school's gymnasium, where the student writers signed copies of the book at a sit-down reception catered by Vacca staff members Robin Harrell and Marion Sneed.

Executive Director Walter Wood, Superintendant of Education Tyrone Yarbrough, Curriculum and Federal Programs Coordinator Tracy Smitherman, and other staff members represented the Alabama Department of Youth Services at the events.

Copies of the new anthologies are available at the Forum for a $5 shipping and handling fee for each book. E-mail writersforum@... for more information.

The Big Read 2010 grants awarded, now accepting applications for 2011

Nine regions, or 213 public libraries, in Alabama received grants to implement the state's first Big Read project. The title selected for The Big Read: Alabama Reads is The Adventures of Tom Sawyer by Mark Twain. This project coincides with the Alabama Year of the Small Town activities through the Alabama Tourism Department. Other partners include the Alabama Public Library Service and the Alabama Center for the Book. NewSouth Books of Montgomery was selected to publish The Big Read edition of Twain's classic.

The Alabama regions will receive grants ranging from $5,000 to $20,000 to promote and carry out community-based programs. Participating communities also receive high-quality, free-of-charge educational materials to supplement each title. Reader's Guides include features such as author biographies, historical context for the book, and discussion questions. Teacher's Guides are developed with National Council of Teachers of English and State Language Arts standards in mind and include lesson plans, essay topics, and classroom handouts. The Big Read Audio Guides feature readings from the novel along with commentary from renowned artists, educators, and public figures.

The Big Read is also accepting applications from nonprofit organizations to conduct month-long, community-wide reads between September 2010 and June 2011. The Big Read is a national program designed to revitalize the role of literature in American culture. Organizations selected to participate in The Big Read will receive a grant ranging from $2,500 to $20,000, access to online training resources, educational and promotional materials, inclusion of their organizations and activities on The Big Read Web site, and the prestige of participating in a highly visible national program.

Approximately seventy-five organizations from across the country will be selected by a panel of experts. For more information, phone Arts Midwest at 612-238-8010 or e-mail TheBigRead@.... Deadline is February 2, 2010.

Rocco Landesman announces "Art Works"

Rocco Landesman (photo by Keyur Khamar-Bloomberg News)

National Endowment for the Arts Chairman Rocco Landesman delivered a keynote address recently at the 2009 national Grantmakers in the Arts conference: "Navigating the Art of Change."

In his remarks, Chairman Landesman laid out the guiding principle that will inform his work at the agency, which can be summed up in two words: "Art works." Chairman Landesman explained that he means this in three ways:

"Art works" is a noun. They are the books, crafts, dances, designs, drawings, films, installations, music, musicals, paintings, plays, performances, poetry, textiles, and sculptures that are the creation of artists.

"Art works" is a verb. Art works on and within people to change and inspire them; it addresses the need people have to create, to imagine, to aspire to something more.

"Art works" is a declarative sentence: arts jobs are real jobs that are part of the real economy. Art workers pay taxes, and art contributes to economic growth, neighborhood revitalization, and the livability of American towns and cities.

Chairman Landesman announced that he will spend the next six months learning and highlighting the ways that art works in neighborhoods and towns across America.

Subject: Local Author Eddie Phillips at Goat Hill Museum Store Holiday Open House, Friday, November 20 from 10-2 p.m.

NewSouth Books invites you to join local author Eddie Phillips on Friday, November 20 at the Goat Hill Museum Store from 10-2 p.m. in celebrating the 8th Annual Goat Hill Museum Store's Holiday Open House.

Phillips, author of the newly published The Other Side of Montgomery: Growing Up White in the Birthplace of the Civil Rights Movement, is one of a half dozen Alabama authors invited to sign books during the event.

Recently published by NewSouth Books, The Other Side of Montgomery provides a look at life in Montgomery during the 1950s and 60s from the perspective of the white middle class. In the midst of great transitions in race relations taking place in the city, Eddie Phillips recalls the Montgomery of his youth, one altered both by social change and the ordinary changes that come with growing up. Phillips's remembrances are told with great fondness and wit. He recalls childhood exploits, tacky Christmas decorations, front porches and backyard barbecues, and, of course, the rich football history of Lee and Lanier High Schools.

Bring yourself and bring a friend, but don't miss this exciting chance to meet, greet, and have your copies of The Other Side of Montgomery signed by local author Eddie Phillips.

Cordially,

Andrew McNamara

**Gustav Hasford [Alabama author]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gustav_Hasford

**Mary Saums, _Thistle and Twigg_ (2007) introduces Jane Thistle, who has just
moved to Alabama after the death of her career military husband. Originally from
England, Jane feels that she is finally at home again in the small town of
Tullulah, especially after meeting Phoebe Twigg, another 60ish widow who has
lived her whole life in Tullulah. After an initial encounter involving a shotgun
and threats, Jane befriends Cal Prewitt, a reclusive man who owns the
neighboring woods. When Jane and Phoebe stumble over a body on Cal's land,
things get even more interesting: Cal is wanted for murder and Phoebe's kitchen
is firebombed. Narrated in alternating chapters by the two very different women,
the opposing views of the same events are often hilarious. Outwardly a proper
silver-haired lady who retains her British accent, Jane has hidden depths. She
owns an arsenal collected by her husband, practices martial arts, and can see
ghosts. Phoebe is totally transparent. She is related to or knows everyone in
town, and speaks her mind openly, even when she hasn't a clue what is going on.
Humor, suspense, and a surprising supernatural element, combine to make his
unusual cozy a success on many different levels.

Materials in brackets are my additions. Items are listed more or less in reverse
chronological order within each section. All links are presumably working at the
time I send this email. Many of the articles listed are printed in other Alabama
newspapers; in general, I do not attempt to list all appearances of an article.
Some dates given are those when the item was posted to the newspaper or magazine
web site. Some items are listed without links because I either could not find
online versions or could not find a free one.

***Feel free to forward this email as desired.***

WARNING: Many articles on newspaper and magazine web sites and blogs are
accompanied by nasty, anonymous comments about individuals and subjects in or
sometimes unrelated to the posted articles. Some articles in these listings will
unfortunately include such commentary.
