You might also try picking up an old marine VHF unit. Most of them have scan capability built in and are easily (and well documented) modified for discriminator output. Check with your local Marine Radio dealers as they usually have scrappers or old units (without DSC) that they take in on trade, and could be had for about $25
There is one guy in Port Weller that has some in stock. (me)

Hello everyone! I have been an ACARS monitor for years, and now I would like to get into AIS. I live right in between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, so we have a good amount of traffic here (except for winter).

I have a computer that I can dedicate to AIS monitoring. Although I already have a scanner, I'd like to buy a cheaper one that I can dedicate solely to AIS 24/7.

I have done some soldering before, but I am a novice, and not great at it. So, I'd like to get recommendations for a good, solid scanner that is cheap and easily modifiable, but still can deliver a good signal to the PC for decoding.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions!

Matt

Hi

Have a look on your e-bay for an Icom PCR1000
These are getting old now with at least 2 more versions after this
the scanner is computer controlled with freq's down to  6 decimal points i.e. 131.725.000MHz

the radio also has a 9600 BPS     packet output point

cheers

Is this new Eric?

You and Matt (and others) might be interested in our group ARMARAIS
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/ARMARAIS/ which is working towards
better AIS coverage of Gt Lakes shipping on the web. This is a
project of gt-lakes-shipsnports, "The open forum on Great Lakes'
shipping." http://groups.yahoo.com/group/gt-lakes-shipsnports/

Re scanners, the Radio Shack 2006 seems to be popular although it can
get up over $100 on eBay.

Is there anyone who has used a serial usb input from a GPS unit into a Linux running Asus and knows how to find which com port it is on ?
With windows its simply a look at ports in task manager but in Linux..... I have spent hours trying to find ways , and failed.
I use Seaclear and am very happy with it and Ais monitoring using an old VHF set has worked adequately but the power consumption of my old Dell through a Maplin voltage unit is very high and the Asus is so much less power.

regards Rod

I'm no expert, but on command line you can give 'lsusb' and 'dmesg' and
check what they say.
'lsusb' tell the physical port and 'dmesg' gives some kryptic
information about the port.
try to read the ports directly:
'cat /dev/ttyUSB0'
Some devices use this ACHI, which I know nothing about.
PL2303 and PL2303X are a bit problematic. Most Linux drivers find these
to be the same chip. You got to Google.

For a number of years have been cruising around in my sailing boat "Bebinka".
Thanks to information from this group and other sources put together an AIS
system that works great. For details on how I went about it please have a look
at: http://bebinka.110mb.com/misc/ais_system/
After having a look at some of the available AIS software, eventually decided
to write my own. I took some good features of the applications I tried and did
other things my own way, to come up with a simple application that works fine
for me. See: http://bebinka.110mb.com/bebinkasoft/
For those of you who are cruisers I recommend that you also have a look at "A
cheap ship alarm system". Its very simple and works great. Don't leave port
without it. See: http://bebinka.110mb.com/misc/ais_alarm/

I installed AISMon 2.2.0 about 4 hours ago, then registered my station online
(Station ID 785). However I have been "offline" for this whole time. Is there
anything I'm doing wrong? (It appears I havent received a valid signal yet).

Internet is ok.

When I reduce the squelch setting on the radio the bars light up to indicated
the software is receiving audio.

AISMon is set to;

Start Monitoring
Correct Audio Device is selected at 48000
I have UDP Output box ticked, with 195.251.168.18:6105 typed in the box.

Any ideas???

Dear sr.
What about the receiver? Is it able to receive AIS signals? A vulgar
receiver does NOT fill the requirements'. Also try to put the Squelch off,
always open with noise.
Let us know the results..

Forget if you are not recieving AIS info. The firste problem you have to solve,
is to comunicate with the Marintraffic server. That comunication is not ok. That
comunication is not working because you are not online. You should be online
even if the AISreciever is not working. So first be online. In some way you are
not sending enything. I have portnumber 5811, but I don't know if eatch station
have its own portnumber.

Try to contact them on

I live on the Columbia River about 75 miles from Portland and last night I
charted one boat around Bingen WA. Bingen is about 15 miles from my location.
Today I have had the program running all day and haven't see anything! I have
seen four tugs with barges go by but nothing on AISMon. I also monitor ATCS for
train with a similar program so I know my discriminator taps are working. Tried
two different radios too.
So does the barge traffic use AIS ?

Doubt there are many equipped. Similar to Lake Michigan, where I was
surprised to find that many large commercial boats are not equipped (though
some are). I would have mentioned this app earlier to you had I figured

Yep, they all should xmit on both channels as I understand it.  Kind of goofy…not sure I understand that concept other than to possibly avoid bad interference on one or the other, such as an open transmitter.  -Gary

So then it doesn't matter which channel I monitor then. With a the ecology worries in the world, why don't they make this mandatory on all cargo vessels then?
Oh and how come my station doesn't turn green when I'm receving a vessel?

It already is for all vessels going intenrtional and over 300BRT acording to IMO
:) theres the schedule:

"AIS introduction schedule:

Mandatory carriage requirements are set for all ships of 300 GRT and over
engaged on international voyages, and those of 500 GRT and over not on
international voyages as well as all passenger vessels irrespective of size.

All ships constructed on or after July 1st, 2002 must be fitted with AIS.
Existing ships engaged in international voyages must be fitted with AIS as
follows:

o all passenger ships not later than July 1st, 2003

o all tankers not later than the first safety equipment survey after July
1st, 2003

o other vessels of 50,000 GRT and over not later than July 1st, 2004

o other vessels of 10,000 GRT to 50,000 GRT not later than July 1st, 2005

o other vessels of 3,000 GRT to 10,000 GRT not later than July 1st, 2006

o other vessels of 300 GRT to 3000 GRT not later than July 1st, 2007

Existing ships not engaged on international voyages, constructed before July
1st, 2002, must be fitted not later than July 1st, 2008."

Interesting that the Lake Express, a passenger/car ferry that crosses Lake
Michigan (a 70 mile trip or so) is not equipped, while some cargo lakers
are. Lake Express was built since 2003. Perhaps since it's not
international, it's not required. I'd just think they'd want it with as
many trips they make at 40mph...seems like the cost should not be excessive.
Anyone know now much a typical unit/installation costs?
