Subject: Protests for the Removal of the Gas Subsidy in Nigeria at the World Bank and International Monetary Fund Locations in Washington, D.C. on January 9th and 13th
tribex2000
Send Email Send Email

Demonstrations protesting the
removal of the gas subsidy in Nigeria will take place at the World Bank on
Monday, January 9th at 11am to 1pm and at the International Monetary
Fund (IMF) on Friday, January 13th at 10am
to 2pm in Washington DC
"Since being elected into
office, the current Nigerian Government has been extremely harsh and
insensitive towards the basic needs of its citizens. The Government has turned
a deaf ear to the cries of Nigerian citizens.   The majority of the
Nigerian people cannot afford the removal of this gas subsidy and the domino
effect this will cause (the price increase on other goods and services),"
Harrison Nwozo, protest organizer said.

This is a part of the Occupy Nigeria movement (Occupy Nigeria DC) which is a
series of protests that started in Nigeria on Monday, January 2nd in response to
the gas subsidy removal by Nigerian President, Goodluck
Jonathan on Sunday, January 1st.

On Monday, January 9th,
an indefinite nationwide strike will commence in Nigeria until the gas subsidy
is reinstated. Protesters in Washington, D.C. are urging the IMF to encourage
the reinstatement of the subsidy. Recently, the World Bank and IMF advised
African countries to remove all subsidies to reduce their national debts.

“We are conducting this protest in Washington, D.C. because
we want to show our solidarity to our Nigerian brothers and sisters back home.
The removal of the gas subsidy has not only affected gas prices in Nigeria but
has
caused a chain reaction on the rest of its economy. Nigeria is a nation where
50% of the people live on less than $2 a day so for the government to not think
about our unique challenges before this policy was changed is thoughtless and
inconsiderate,” Chika Uwazie, protest organizer said.

Protests have also been reported in other countries
including London.  In addition to the
reversal of the gas subsidy ban, Nigerians want better infrastructure and the
elimination
of corruption.
The protest on Monday will begin at 11am with a march at
McPherson Square to World Bank Headquarters located at 1818 H Street, NW,
Washington, D.C.   The demonstration will
end at 1pm. The protest on Friday will begin at 10am at the International
Monetary Fund located at 700 19th street
NW with a march to the second International Monetary Fund building at  1900
Pennsylvania Ave NW.

"As far as Nigeria goes, I have never been able to cast
a vote. So, what this protest means to me is something very personal. It means
an opportunity to be part of something bigger than me; an opportunity to stand
with other Nigerians and stand against EVERYTHING wrong with Nigeria. This, for
me, is not a choice, it is an obligation," Ifeanyi Nwoko, protest
organizer said.
Local protests are being organized by various groups and
organizations including Let There Be Light In Nigeria - Nigerian Million March
and African Diaspora Institute.  For more

Batuki Music Society presents Wazimbo & Orchestra Marrabenta de Toronto at
the Lula Lounge on Thursday March 8th, 2012 at 9 pm.  Wazimbo’s music
is a mix of big band sounds, Latin melodies and unique African dance rhythms,
typical of Lusophone (Portuguese speaking Africa). Humberto Carlos Benfica,
known as Wazimbo, is one of the greatest voices of Mozambique and one of the
most famous singers for the style of music called marrabenta.  Wazimbo started
his musical career in 1964 with the Silverstars (continued as a singer with the
Geiziers), performing a colonial mix of international pop music with a Brazilian
tinge in Mozambique’s capital Maputo.  After independence from Portugal in
1975, Wazimbo was the only singer employed by state radio and worked with its
band, ‘Radio Mocambique’. He became the lead vocalist of Orchestra
Marrabenta Star de Mocambique in 1979 and played with various members from the
big band of Radio
Mocambique.  Orchestra Marrabenta Star de Mocambique developed a full and
funky style of music named marrabenta featuring electric guitars, powerful horn
lines and soulful vocals. In 1988 Wazimbo recorded with Orchestra Marrabenta de
Mocambique, the popular ‘Harare Sessions’ in Zimbabwe as Mozambique did not
have a recording studio or any music industry.  During a recording break
Wazimbo played his legendary ‘Nwahulwana’ ballad while the tape machine was
still running, discovered later in London when the mixing took place. The song
was also used in the soundtrack to the Jack Nicholson film, ‘The Pledge’,
directed by Sean Penn.  The lyrics of the song translate like this; ‘You are
a night bird, moving after dark from bar to bar…’ After becoming extremely
popular in Mozambique, Wazimbo and Orchestra Marrabenta Stars toured Europe and
released two CDs on Germany’s Piranha label.  Both showcased a varied mix of
dance styles
plus the occasional, strikingly soulful ballad.  The 90’s saw a return to
peace in Mozambique, but by then there were no recording studios or music venues
and the group finally disbanded in 1995.  Since that time Wazimbo has had a
solo career and recorded a CD in South Africa called
‘Makwero’. Wazimbo will be accompanied by a Toronto lineup of musicians
including Tichaona Maredza, Gordin Mapika, Larry Lewis, Ruben
Esguerra and Sam Petit. Wazimbo and Orchestra Marrabenta de TorontoDate:

For immediate releaseMarch 16, 2012Toronto.  Batuki Music Society Presents
Malian Griot Sountougoumba Diarra, April 6, 2012, 8 pm. at the NOW Lounge, 189
Church Street.  Sountougoumba Diarra, who descends from a long line of Malian
griots, was born in Kayes, Mali.  She is a
young artist of exceptional quality and in the same league or caliber as her
famous mother, Kandia
Kouyate.  Tapa, as she goes by this childhood nickname, inherits her
mother’s powerful Manding voice and tradition, and her father Bouya Diarra’s
Bambara traditional dance talents.  Tapa’s parents are artists who have
greatly influenced her music career.  The ‘kora’ (21 string harp) is an
instrument that takes centre stage in Malian tradition and culture, and it is
especially significant in performance of ceremonies and rites.  The kora is
also a favourite of the ‘djelis’ or ‘griots’, a
centuries old caste whose practitioners are revered as they are considered
keepers of records and oral history of the great Manding Empire.  Tapa is one
of the keepers of this tradition, an excellent dancer and an artist who
possesses a powerful and simply delicious voice. Tapa is based in Montreal, has
performed throughout the province of Quebec as well as several appearances here
in Ontario.  She will be accompanied by kora player Dieli Mori Tounkara and
keyboardist David Mobio.  Dieli Mori Tounkara, an
excellent kora player who also plays guitar, is the brother of guitarist
Djelimady Tounkara of Mali’s famous group, the Super Rail Band as well as a
member of the Afro-Cubism super group project that toured Europe and America
recently.  Dieli Mori Tounkara studied kora from the highly regarded kora
master, Toumani Kouyate.  Dieli Mori Tounkara has played alongside some great
artists in Mali and Senegal.  He also plays drums and other percussion
instruments. He is a founding member of ‘Kabakuwo’, a local group in
Montreal, Quebec.  David Mobio, born in the Ivory Coast, is a talented
keyboardist and arranger who arrived in Canada in the early ‘90s.  He has
since then been based in Quebec, putting his talents to use, playing with local
artists such as; Jean Leloup, Melanie Renaud, and Senaya.  Mobio has also
accompanied international artists such as; Guyana’s Chris Combete, Guinea’s
Sekouba Bambino, Congo’s Annie Ebene, Togo’s
King Mensah, and South Africa’s Lorraine Klassen.  He has also recorded and
arranged a few albums.  Tapa Diarra’s performance would transform any space
into a communal setting similar to a village in Mali.  The NOW Lounge would be
equally warm and welcoming like a Malian homestead, you will savour and enjoy
the experience – up close.  Resident DJ Apollo will be entertaining between
sets.  Date:                        Friday

Subject: Batuki Music Society presents Senegal's troubadour Cheikh Lo at the Great Hall on April 25, 2011

For immediate release:

March 23, 2012

Toronto.

Batuki Music Society presents Senegal’s mystic
troubadour Cheikh Lo on April 25, 2012, 9 pm. at the Great Hall, 1087 Queen St.
West.

Born in Burkina Faso to Senegalese parents in
1955, Cheikh Lo grew up there and began his career as a vocalist and
percussionist playing West African and Afro-Cuban music with Orchestra Volta
Jazz.  In 1981 he moved to Senegal
where he learnt to play drums and guitar, and adapted a variety of influences
from West and Central Africa into his music.

Cheikh Lo belongs to the Baye Fall, a sub-sect
of the Mourids or Sufism practiced in Senegal.  He is a devotee of this sect
and often includes praises in a
song or two on his recordings.
During his teens Cheikh Lo listened to all kinds of music and especially
Congolese rumba which was very popular throughout the continent.  In 1984 he
moved to Paris where he
worked as a studio session drummer for a couple of years, especially working
with Congolese and Cameroonian musicians.
Cheikh Lo’s first recording ‘Doxandeme’ (immigrant), on cassette,
recounts his experiences as a Senegalese immigrant abroad released in 1991,
sold very well and earning the award of ‘Nouveau Talent’ in Dakar.

One of Senegal’s greatest artists Youssou
N’Dour, first met Cheikh Lo as a session musician in 1989, and immediately
liked his voice.  Youssou N’Dour
later recorded and produced Cheikh Lo’s first album, ‘Ne La Thiass’, in
1995.  Ne la Thiass, a
semi-acoustic Spanish-tinged take on the popular ‘mbalax’ style was a
success
in Senegal.  His second album
‘Bambay Gueej’, co-produced by Nick Gold and Youssou N’Dour was released
in
1999 under the World Circuit label.
Cheikh Lo has also worked collaboratively on other recordings with
friends Pee Wee Ellis and Tony Allen.

Cheikh Lo has toured successfully abroad over
the years and picking new sounds and influences along the way.  His latest tour
in November 2011, was
as part of ‘Still Black, Still Proud’, an African tribute to James Brown at
the
Royal Conservatory in Toronto alongside Pee Wee Ellis, Maceo Parker, and Vusi
Mahlasela.  Cheikh Lo is now based
in Dakar, Senegal, where he is playing regularly with his band and immersing
himself in the city’s music scene.
Cheikh Lo is not only a distinctive guitarist often seen wearing his signature
gown of colourful patches of cloth and dreadlocks, he is also an artist who
continues to evolve by embracing musical styles from around the world and
incorporating them into his music.
