Sogbety Diomande's
West African Drum and Dance Company
Date: Saturday April 14, 2007
Time: 7:30pm
Place: Bellville Opera House, 142 Park Place, Bellville, Ohio
Tickets: $10

The Bellville Opera House will be transformed into a festive West
African village for one night only. Don't miss this exciting
performance of master drummers and dancers. You will be amazed at
the incredible talent and energy along with the colorful costumes and
masks. You will even witness some very exciting stilt dancing.

Sogbety Diomande was born and raised in the tiny farming village of
Toufinga in the northwest part of the Ivory Coast in West Africa and
has been performing since he was a child. He has been a member of
Ballet National de Cote d'Ivoire, Kotchegna Dance Company, and has
been featured with many troupes in NYC and around the US. Sogbety
started his own troupe in 2005. He hand picks a group of master
drummers, dancers and musicians. They perform native West African
rhythms, dances and songs. Our drumming events tend to sell out so
get your tickets early! www.myspace.com/sogbetydiomande

This gig will feature some of the best live bands we had had the
pleasure of working with during 2006.

CALL TO MIND

"call to mind's gentle sounds had punters curious at first with
evocative singing and piano, but there was more to them than just
ambient harmonies. a vexed, intense, guitar-fuelled performance
followed. a great start to the night and refreshing to hear a more
confident and original sounding local act." (highland news)

THE RISE

"Finally, every so often you come across a band that makes you wanna
shout Yeeahhh! at the top of your voice. THE RISE
(www.wearetherise.co.uk) are that kind of band. Listen to Black Monday -
it will blow your brain skyward, and embodies the brilliance taking
place right here, right now, in Dundee. This Scene is on Fire!!!"
(NME - Feb 2007)

THE SIDE

“Last year the The Side showed no signs of slowing down with showcase
gigs at the goNorth Festival in Aberdeen and goHi in Inverness, an
appearance at the BBC Seedlings stage at the Belladrum Festival, self
released their second e.p, featured on Fat Hippy Records (Aberdeen) "
The Sampler" compilation Album and gigged across Scotland from Gairloch
to Glasgow.”

UNCLE ROCKET

“Uncle Rocket have recently formed in the later part of last year. We
are now complete with full set and Demo CD recorded at Vital Spark
Recording Studio, Isle of Skye. We will be playing at various venues
arond the country this year, and will build on the strong dynamic vibe
evident in our live performances. Most of the songs are fairly eclectic
and hard to pidgeon hole, but are strong catchy tunes with a fair amount
of energy.”

I can only imagine the experience that you had. A dream of mine is to

sent me a lot of CD's from Mali. That was before we were married

Hello,
I just signed up to this group and wanted to say Hello to everyone.
My name is Michelle and I live in a Chicago suburb. I am an American
married to a Liberian man and I love African music. I have a nice
sized collection and I am always looking to add more music. My main
interest in joining this group is to discuss the groups that I enjoy
listening to and having a network of friends in Africa throughout
the different countries.

I visited Ghana in 2003 for 2 weeks and bought a lot of Ghanian
music on from street vendors and have a variety of their music.

Another of my favorites is the music from Mali, Habib Koite and
Bamada are one of my favorites from Mali, I have 3 of their CD's and
saw them perfom in Chicago back in 2000.

I have many other groups, too many to list for now, but,,,

There is a current group in South Africa that I am desperately
trying to find ways of purchasing their music here in the US, but I
am not having any luck finding any distributor that actually sells
their CD's here in the US.

The group that I have recently discovered is "Zola" and I found out
about them when I just happened to come across the CD for the Motion
Picture "Tsotsi"

So far I have only found ways of purchasing Zola's CD's directly
from South Africa online, but I am hesitant to do that with the
confusion with the exchange rate and not sure if my credit card will
actually work with their website.

I am interested in also finding more South African groups that
perform the "Kwaito" style music.

I hoping I make some good connections for music through this group.

Dear Michelle,

I'm writing from Mindrand, on the outskirts of Johannesburg. I'm an Angolan
working for the Pan-African Parliament. The shopping centre where I always
have lunch has two CD stores and a post office. I'll ask them about Zola's
CD and some other Kwaito albums, and ask the post office how much sending
two or three CDs to the US would cost. I'll tell you about the results of my
inquiry later on in the day. You can pay me back the day I come to New York,
if I ever will...

All the best

How are you? I hope that all is well...

This is Said Kakese Dibinga, I’ve received a massive amount of email questions

We've completed a test shoot that's still being worked on (editing, credits,

rough, unfinished version (if it doesn't work, you can cut and paste into the

kongobrazza05

Greetings,

The CONGOLESE DANCE AND DRUM CONFERENCE 2007 will be held May 31st, - June
3rd, Oakland, CA, the venue is still to be determined. This will be an
event that you can’t miss so, please spread the word to everyone you know
and feel free to print this information and distribute it. There has been a
presence of Congolese people, meaning people from the countries named Congo
in Central Africa, here in the United States for more than 30 years. These
two countries in Central Africa are now called the Republic of the Congo, of
which Brazzaville is its capitol, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo,
of which Kinshasa is its capitol, hence the dual set of flags that will
appear on the advertisement, as the people from both of these countries are
the same people--Congolese people. The fact that this will be the first
Congolese Dance and Drum Conference to exist in this country is why this
event is history in the making and what makes it so special. I would like
to emphasize the YOUTH Class which will teach drum and dance, and the
LECTURE and discussions, which will be free to attend. So, come one, come
all. This event is for all ages, dancers, non-dancers, drummers,
non-drummers, spectators, etc. Hope to see you there! I will be sending
another email once the schedule is set. The cost per class will be the same
as before, $15 per dance class, $20 per drum class, $8 for youth class (ages
4 -17, ages 3 and under FREE), and again all lectures/discussions are free.
The time frame of the schedule is tentatively set for Thursday and Friday
beginning around 5:30pm opening with a short lecture/discussion follolwed by
two classes. Then Saturday (maybe) and Sunday will begin at 9:00am opening
with lecture/discussion followed by the rest of the classes. The
pre-registration deadline is May 27 for those that wish to take six or more
classes, the cost will be $13 for those classes and they are to be chosen
prior to the start of the conference. Also, the instructors and musicians
are the same as last year aside from myself: Mbala Nkanga, Titos Sompa,
Biza Sompa, Mbayero Louvouezo, Alain Moumbolo, Odile Wanuke, Portsha
Jefferson (Haitian Dance), Constant Massengo, Armel Mampouya, Jean-Armel
Mampouya, Mbay Louvouezo, and Lee Hetelson. All other details will be sent
when they are confirmed. My apologies for delay in receiving this
information if this is your first time hearing about it. However, if you
attended last year, then you know that this is a must attend event and that
it will be wonderful!!! So again, please help get the word out because all
your efforts will be appreciated. Thanks.

Peace,

LaKiesha

legendary Zimbabwean group The Green Arrows.

*(**Analog Africa/ AACD 061)*

*"... inventive musicians who effortlessly fused traditional Southern
African flavours with American influences .... a CD to treasure." BBC

*"Terrific low-fidelity recordings** **... dance grooves that set the
stage
for the future of southern African pop."** **Chicago Tribune*
*"Timeless stuff."* *Downbeat *****

*"All modern popular music in Zimbabwe owes a certain debt to the first
Zimbabwean group to record an LP there, and so this first edition in
Analog
Africa´s series is particularly timely."* *AllAboutJazz*

*"Lost '70s Zimbabwean Afro-rock that'll make you grin.** **Guitarist
Stanley Manatsa's wah-wah is just plain nasty."* *Spin *****

*"A model compilation with excellent notes that put the music in
context and
even convey the personalities of the artists."** **Afropop Worldwide*
*"A treasure trove of melody, a crucial, lovingly assembled look back
at one
of the more fascinating and somewhat forgotten groups in African
history."**
**Global Rhythm*

Undoubtedly the most important musical act to emerge from Zimbabwe in the
1970s, the Green Arrows transmuted the widespread social upheaval of their
homeland into hopeful, rhythmic, political, experimental music. This
extraordinarily progressive group took the country by storm, fusing the
different rhythms of the region into one unique and ebullient sound. The
Green Arrows were the first Zimbabwean band to record an LP (released in
February 1976) - a milestone in Zimbabwean music history. Also their song
"Musango Mune Hangaiwa" still holds the record for the longest stay at
number1 in the Zimbabwean charts (4 months).

At the start of the 1970s the Green Arrows were merely the best bar
band in
all of Zimbabwe. By decade's end, they had achieved a level of fame
previously unheard of in the country. The band's mercurial bassist and
lead
singer, Zexie Manatsa, became the patriarch of a flourishing musical scene
in Zimbabwe, then Rhodesia. When he got married in 1979, an estimated
60,000
guests showed up for the wedding, held in Rufaro Stadium in Harare, with
Oliver Mtukudzi and Thomas Mapfumo amongst the performers.

The Green Arrows, discovered by South African producer West Nkosi, had
become the tightest, funkiest band around. The music was branded 'wha
wha (=
beer) music' as it got people to consume vast amounts of beer. The
Arrows'
unique sound managed to be intensely danceable and catchy, yet breezy and
laid-back at the same time. Guitar riffs sparkle like stars throughout
each
of these three-minute-long compositions. The rhythm section is
flawless and
the mellow, stoned vocals perfectly convey the band's overarching message:
'Forget your troubles for a little while and dance with your fellow human
beings - something great might come of it'. This is music to get lost
inside, hypnotic and gently percussive, utterly irresistible and
addictive.

The twenty tracks on this CD, collected here by Analog Africa's Samy Ben
Redjeb and all painstakingly re-mastered, vividly illustrate the Arrows'
rise to greatness. Divided into two parts, the first of which is
culled from
the Chipo Chiroorwa LP (1974) and features material from 1974 and
1975, and
the second of which, called Waka Waka Selection combines singles recorded
between 1976 and 1979. The accompanying 24-page booklet (edited by
renowned critic Banning Eyre) frames the music in the proper historical
context, with a full detailed discography and numerous rare photographs.

Blue Nile Records presents:

Golden Era of Sudanese Music, Volume 1

For hundreds of years Sudan has been an important
crossroads
between African and Arabic cultures. With over 750 ethnic groups of
its own,
and attracting people from throughout East, North and West Africa, Sudan's
diversity is unmatched. Slicing through the heart of the largest
country in
Africa is the great Nile River, the lifeblood of the region. As long as
people have come to the water's edge, they have brought their music. Songs
of praise, rhythms set to a camel's gait, stringed instruments from the
Orient, bagpipes from Europe - they've all found their way to the
Sudan. And
like the grains of sand within a shimmering dune, each of these individual
sounds have contributed to the exotic and beautiful style that we know as
Sudanese music.

With a rich history of musical expression and cultural
exchange, it's mysterious that music from Sudan is so difficult to find
outside Khartoum. Walk into any music store in the United States of Europe
and you'll find piles of recordings from Mali, Morocco and the Democratic
Republic of the Congo. But what about the Sudan? The imposition of strict
sharia laws have crippled Sudan's music scene. This interpretation of
Islamic law prohibits music and dancing, which are two of humankind's most
fundamental expressions. Many of the country's most prominent
musicians have
been imprisoned, while others live in exile in neighboring countries.
And it's
not just contemporary singers who are targeted; traditional zar ceremonies
have been interrupted, drums confiscated, ouds destroyed and musicians
beaten. In a display of complete cultural ignorance, the same government
sponsored radio network that helped popularize so many of these very same
musicians erased historic recordings of Sudan's greatest musicians. Since
1989, Sudan's musical growth has been stunted.

Not long before the dark times of the sharia, Sudan was a
vibrant center of musical creativity. From 1941 to 1979, the country
celebrated its "golden era" of music. This was a time when Sudanese people
would dance and sing together, a time when the radio revolution was
broadcasting new sounds to every corner of the desert, and when poets and
politically motivated singers were rising to stardom. There has never
been a
period of time more significant than these golden years.

Like many other countries around the world, Sudan's
development was accelerated with the arrival of radio. Originally intended
to carry news of World War II, radio waves united Sudanese from all
corners
of the nation. When the war ended, the news broadcasts were replaced with
music. Songs of celebration, cultural pride, love and praise were
broadcast
far and wide, and the radio revolution of the 1940s was born.

For the first time, musicians like Hassan Attayah and
Osman Alshfi had an audience. Their golden voices filled the airwaves and
inspired millions of Sudanese. Alshfi is considered one of the pioneers of
modern music; his songs have deep African roots but bloom beautiful Arabic
flowers. Attayah is sometimes referred to as the "Prince" of Sudanese
music,
and was one of the first to master the art of the oud (an Arabic lute
brought to Sudan by way of Turkey in the 1920s).

Between 1956 and 1979, Sudan experienced a period of
musical sophistication. Classical elements from Arabic countries smoothed
the rough edges of tribal music, without silencing the rhythms and songs
that had been sung for generations. Western instruments like violins,
accordions, guitars and brass instruments found their way into Sudanese
compositions. This was also a time for vocalists to perfect their
craft. One
of the most important singers of this time was Abdul Aziz Mohammed Dawoud.
As a young boy studying in a primary school in Khartoum, Dawoud heard the
incredible voice of Karouma - a pioneer of Sudanese singing - playing on a
distant phonograph. This single experience left a lasting impression, and
directed the course of his life. Many of Sudan's greatest contemporary
singers consider Dawoud's style "revolutionary."

The 1960s brought American and European pop music to
Africa,
and it was impossible for musicians in Sudan not to take notice. The
charismatic and contagious tunes had a great affect on Ibrahim Awad, a
famous vocalist who danced his way into East Africa's history books.
Before
Awad, no entertainer had ever danced on stage in public before.

While Sudanese pop and Arabic-influenced modern
music was
filling the streets of Sudan, folk music was also experiencing great
popularity. Singer-songwriters were the heroes of the day, especially
those
that integrated traditional ethnic rhythms and elements into the
tapestry of
vocals and oud, guitar and violins. Khadir Bashir is one folk singer
who was
in demand, both on the radio and at weddings throughout the country.

Last, but certainly not least is Mohammed Wardi. A true
musical rebel who has affected positive change, provided inspiration, and
kept social activism at the forefront of his musical career, Wardi is in a
league all his own. Despite the political instability of his homeland,
sharia laws that forced him to flee to Cairo, and civil wars that have
resulted in hundreds of thousands of refugees, Wardi has remained
steadfast
in his belief in humanity and the irrepressible spirit of the Sudanese
people. Wardi, along with Osman Hussein and Hassan Attayah - the only
three
living musicians on this compilation - represent the past, present and
future of Sudanese music.

"I am very proud to be able to represent these artists," says Mohammed M.
Elomrabi, a Sudanese native now living in America. "This is the first time
that many of these artists have ever been heard before. All of these
artists
were chosen because of the fingerprint they have left on Sudanese
music. But
this is more than just music. It is the preservation of our culture, our
heritage. I want to share this music with the world to increase cultural
awareness and the rich musical history of the Sudan. But this is only the
beginning."

Hi, it's Tim from Pandora,

I'm writing today to ask for your help. The survival of Pandora and
all of
Internet radio is in jeopardy because of a recent decision by the
Copyright
Royalty Board in Washington, DC to almost triple the licensing fees for
Internet radio sites like Pandora. The new royalty rates are irrationally
high, more than four times what satellite radio pays, and broadcast radio
doesn't pay these at all. Left unchanged, these new royalties will kill
every Internet radio site, including Pandora.

In response to these new and unfair fees, we have formed the SaveNetRadio
Coalition, a group that includes listeners, artists, labels and
webcasters.
I hope that you will consider joining us.

Please sign our petition urging your Congressional representative to
act to
save Internet radio:
http://capwiz.com/saveinternetradio/issues/alert/?alertid=9631541

Please feel free to forward this link/email to your friends - the more
petitioners we can get, the better.

Understand that we are fully supportive of paying royalties to the artists
whose music we play, and have done so since our inception. As a former
touring musician myself, I'm no stranger to the challenges facing working
musicians. The issue we have with the recent ruling is that it puts the
cost of streaming far out of the range of ANY webcaster's business
potential.

I hope you'll take just a few minutes to sign our petition - it WILL
make a
difference. As a young industry, we do not have the lobbying power of the
RIAA. You, our listeners, are by far our biggest and most influential
allies.

As always, and now more than ever, thank you for your support.
