Musiques d'Afrique newsletter No. 20/21 (April/May 2003)

Dear African Music fan,

The Musiques d'Afrique web site (
http://www.geocities.com/fbessem/musique.html ) has been
updated again in April and May. The site now features 160
pages on 160 artists, bands and solo musicians, with more
than 1050 albums mentioned, of which around 150 featured in
detail in separate pop-up windows.

1. Musiques d’Afrique update: six (6) new artist pages have
been added:

Africando:

Panafrican/world wide supergroup set up in 1992 by Ibrahima
Sylla, Boncana Maiga and the late Pape Seck. Hardly needing
an introduction, their African flavoured salsa music went
around the globe, a brand new album «Martina» will
prolongate the success undoubtedly;

Reddy Amisi:

Talented singer from Congo, who learnt the business in Papa
Wemba's Viva la Musica. After numerous albums with Viva La
Musica, Reddy is now ready for a solo career with a newly
established group Casa Do Canto. A new album is out in
January 2003;

Djiguiya:

Group from Burkina Faso, already toured around Europe, now
finally with a first CD available in Europe.
Semi-traditional music with lots of percussion and balafon
(African xylophone), full of energy;

Saramaya:

Another group from Burkina Faso, playing more or less in the
same style as Djiguiya. Great solo's of the pentatonic
balafons… Their CD is available through Musiques d'Afrique !
This summer, they are touring in France;

Mamou Sidibé:

Young and talented singer from Mali. Her second CD is just
out in Mali (and will be available through Musiques
d'Afrique soon) and promises to become a big hit. Her style
is close to that of Issa Bagaogo, which isn't a bad sign !

Hadja Soumano:

Yet another female singer from Mali, but one with a stunning
voice, both powerful and warm. Hadja is underestimated in
the West, few of her songs are commercially available at the
moment. A shame…

The CD web shop provides rare albums from Africa (mainly
West Africa) not (yet) distributed internationally. At the
moment, a small number of CDs mainly from Mali and Burkina
Faso are available. Don't miss these unique recordings:

Coumba Sidibé: Mansa,

Adama Yalomba: M'bora (only one left!!),

Les Escrocs: Kalan,

Les Escrocs: Kokadjè,

Dene Issebere: Djigui,

Saramaya: Mougnou.

In the near future, more albums will be offered.

Several existing pages have been updated:

New albums of Toumani Diabaté, Boubacar Traoré, Jean-Pierre
Essome, and Sam Mangwana have been added; The pages on
André-Marie Tala, Robson Banda, Defao, Empire Bakuba, Sam
Mangwana, Oliver Mtukudzi and Adama Yalomba have been
updated with more album details and/or extended
discographies.

2. African music news:

Various new albums have been released in the past weeks:

- Africando - Martina - Senegal

- Djiguiya - Sakidi - Burkina Faso

- Super Rail Band - Kongo Sigui - Mali

- Mamou Sidibe - Mussoya - Mali

- Sam Mangwana - Cantos de Esperança - Congo

- Jean-Pierre Essome - A César - Cameroon

- Les Sans Visa - Ennemi public - Cameroon

Albums in preparation: Rokia Traoré, Amy Koita, Adama
Yalomba, Magic Black Men, Idrissa Souamoro, J-B. M’Piana

For more news, please check regularly our pages for updates!

The page on World Music Festivals in Europe has been updated
again with more festival dates in 2003.

Les pages de tous les artistes maliens (43 pages !) sur
Musiques du Mali sont desormais aussi disponibles en langue
française !

If you have suggestions to add specific musicians or albums
not mentioned on existing pages, do not hesitate to drop us
a line.

Feel free to take a look again.

Kind regards,

Frank Bessem

Taking Afro-pop to the next level

Congolese singer-songwriter Koffi Olomide offers a
spectacular, high-energy visual performance.

Congo rhythms (Athis Photo)

More Afro-pop

By Don Heckman, Special to The Times

Koffi Olomide in action is a sight to behold. Elegant as a
peacock, garbed in designer fashions, the Congolese
singer-songwriter moves with the slender sensuality and
charismatic demeanor of a male diva. His concerts in Africa
and Europe, where his music has brought the rhythms of the
Congo into the Afro-pop mainstream, are major stadium
events, comparable to a performance by a Michael Jackson or
a Bruce Springsteen.

Olomide makes his first West Coast appearance Saturday night
at the Palladium in a performance featuring a colorful
company of 22, including eight dancers, six vocalists and
eight musicians. The program will also include the African
Acrobats of Kenya (who have been seen on "The Late Show With
David Letterman"), Nze Eugene Decoque and the "gyration
master," Tony One Week.

Nnamdi Moweta, a KPFK-FM (90.7) and Voice of America radio
personality, has been working with producer Mary Ofili for
nearly a year to sort through the complicated process of
bringing Olomide to Los Angeles.

"This will be his first stop on a tour of major cities,"
Moweta says. "It takes us back to the first King Sunny Adé
show at the Palladium in the mid-'80s -- a very special
occasion because it introduced African music to so many
people. And this one, I believe, is going to have the same
effect."

Although he is still little known in the U.S., Olomide, who
was born in the northeast Congolese city of Kisangani in
1956 and raised in Kinshasa in the west Congo, has had a
particularly powerful effect upon African audiences. Early
last month, at a concert in Benin, the crush of listeners in
a stadium that was filled beyond capacity resulted in 17
deaths and dozens of injuries.

Olomide was in transit from Brazzaville to Kinshasa to
Europe to the U.S. as this article was being written, and
unreachable by phone. He did, however, refer to the Benin
concert last week in a conversation on Moweta's radio show.

"I was very unhappy in Benin," he said. "Because I lost very
many fans, and this ... will be in my heart for the rest of
my career."

Despite the tragedy, the event reflects Olomide's enormous
popularity at a time when music provides rare moments of
contrast with Africa's turbulent political, social and
humanitarian troubles. "I want," he said, "to reach everyone
-- Americans, Africans living in the U.S. and African
Americans."

African music first began to make its way into the
international pop mainstream in the mid-20th century, when
Cuban-Caribbean music, the guitar and European horns and
drums interfaced with traditional African melodies and
rhythms. Performers such as Fela Kuti, Papa Wemba, Baaba
Maal, Youssou N'Dour and Salif Keita -- to name a very few
-- have transformed these elements into an engaging music
underscored by irresistibly foot-tapping rhythms.

Olomide, along with Femi Kuti (Fela's son), is taking that
music into new territories. In Kuti's case, he is doing so
via an artistic alliance with hip-hop. Olomide's perspective
is more far reaching -- a spectacular, high-energy visual
performance with the fast-paced impact of an MTV music
video.

Equally important, adds Moweta, "Koffi has the ability to
get so much music out of the drummers, the singers and the
dancers. Fela Kuti had the same ability, to get the flow
from a stage full of musicians. But Koffi writes very good
songs, as well, and has a kind of instinctive feeling for
getting in touch with a crowd.

Coming to California "has been a dream, because I've never
been there before," Olomide told Moweta. "And I will do
everything I can to give everyone a hot show."

-----------------------

Our special pages for African music can be accessed at
http://www.cdroots.com/africa.shtml
and look for the link for the Real Audio stream of songs from all over
the continent.

Zambian Roadside
Zambia's Southern Province is vibrant with a large diversity of music
- topical songs, unique guitar styles (often with self-made guitars),
catchy tunes and rhythms, beautiful harmony singing, and interesting
percussion. Field recorder Michael Baird calls it 'the roadside
reality - the state of music as it is.' This is a REALLY fantastic
recording for African music enthusiasts and anyone who loves great
acoustic guitar music, no matter from where.

Super Rail Band de Bamako - Kongo Sigui
fRoots says: 'the magnificent new one from the other outfit in the
holy trinity of guitar-led West African bands.' Great, brand new
recordings, stripped down and grooving. This is some of the best of
the west African guitar sound.

Various Ghana - The Guitar and the Gun
A classic collection of highlife from Ghana, recorded 1981-84 during
the revolution. Bokor Studios saved the music of an era in spite of
hardships and now these great recordings, orginally released on vinyl
by Earthworks, are finally on a CD.

Sam Mangwana - Cantos de Esperanca - 17.99
One of the greatest voices of Congolese rumba goes back to the Latin
roots on this 2003 release. Essential, in my opinion.

Papa Susso - Sotuma-sere
Kora player Alahji Papa Susso is a recognized master of the
instrument, a member of one of the most revered Mandinka musical
families. This is a set of extended solos, all beautifully recorded.

Abdelli - Among Brothers (Shipping May 10)
Abdelli brings the poetry and music of the Kabyls, Berbers of North
Africa into the twentieth century with a modern yet strongly acoustic
and folk-rooted sense of style. In addition to his own instruments
(mandola, vocals), he is joined by a cast of musicians from Morocco,
Spain, Belgium, Chile, Argentina and Tunisia, contributing guitars
(electric and acoustic), accordions, darbouka, bendir, tabla, tar,
bombo, guiro, ud, nay, violin and much more.

Baden Powell - Os Afro Sambas (Available June 15)
Together with Brazilian singer Vinicius de Moraes, Powell made these
remarkable recording in the 1960s to show the deep connection between
South American and African music and culture. A welcome reissue of an
essential session.

-------------------------------------------------
Some other global hits that might be of interest:

The Blind Boys of Alabama - Higher Ground
The Blind Boys of Alabama are backed by 'sacred steel' musicians
Robert Randolph and his Family Band and the result is an album that is
soulful and inspired. Features songs made written or made famous by
Aretha Franklin, Prince, Curtis Mayfield, Jimmy Cliff, Funkadelic,
Stevie Wonder, Ben Harper, plus traditional gospel classics.

Solomon & Socalled - Hiphop Khasene
Solomon & Socalled's cast of musicians, including special guest. David
Krakauer, turn an authentic Eastern European Jewish wedding, the
khasene, into a hiphop extravaganza complete with old-school Yiddish
freestylin' on the mike from shtetl-MC Michael Alpert. Come join the
wedding party, share in ancient marriage rituals and celebrate the
union of fiddle and microphone! The album also includes a special,
exclusive remix from Smadj.

Apanui - E Tau Nei
fRoots' Ian Anderson says: 'What we have here is a beautifully subtle,
understated (though often powerful, as on the war dance 'Taku Pu') and
very attractive blend of Maori traditional song forms, rhythms,
oratory and harmonies with R & B, reggae, trip hop, garage and a whole
mix of recent dance technology. That sounds like a familiar process
with equivalents the world over these days, but this one mostly
achieves that near-impossible melding where the elements accentuate
each other rather than detract...'

Various - Maori Music Collection
Sixteen tracks from ten different musicians/musical groups cover
traditional to pop music from Maori roots. Ngahiwi Apanui, Tuahine,
Aotearoa Maori Chorale, Aorangi, Ko te Whanua O Morvin Raua Ko Kura
Simon, Aotearoa, Dread Beat & Blood, David Grace & Injustice, Te
Mokai, Maramapai, Chelsea & Lynaire Simon.

Hi, I just joined this group.

Does anyone know what became of Jali Musa Jawara's "Yasimika" CD?
It's one of my favorite recordings in the entire world, but somehow
lost it along the way.

I've been searching for it and searching for it, and cannot find it.
Any suggestions? Will it be re-released soon? It's strange that such
a classic recording has diseappeared.

Or, if anyone wants to make a trade, I'd love to. Some of my favorite
recordings that I have are "Djam Leellii" by Maal and Seck, "Kela
Tradition" by Kasse Mady, Francis Bebey's "Sourire de lune," nearly
everything by Ella Fitzgerald during her Verve period, Nonesuch
Explorer's classic Javanese Gamelan Vols. 2-3, many CDs by Muzsikas
(from Hungary, w/ Marta Sebestyen on vocals), and many jazz vocal CDs.

I look forward to learning alot more about music in this list! :-)

Jubilate and Florida Memorial College Debut Their Summer Music Institute“Make
Somethin’ Happen!”
Free Summer Camp for South Florida High School Music Students

All Star Faculty Helmed by Jazz Great Melton Mustafa

Opa Locka, Florida --- Monday, June 16 kicks off the Jubilate Arts Preparatory
Academy’s (JAPA) newest collaboration with Florida Memorial College’s (FMC)
Department of Music, “Make Somethin’ Happen,” a Summer Music Institute (SMI) for
High School Students, sponsored by the Dade Community Foundation, Miami Dade
Public Schools and the Keith & Renata Ward Family Fund.

Additional sponsors include the Miami Dade County’s Department of Cultural
Affairs, Coral Gables Congregational Church, the Jim Moran Foundation, C.T.
Randolph, Bank Atlantic and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation.

Held on the campus of FMC, 15800 N.W. 42nd Ave., the Institute presents an
exciting chance for talented high school students to participate, in a rich and
rewarding two week-long workshop led by a vibrant faculty of music educators and
performers.

Students will focus in one of these programs of music study: composition, jazz
studies (The Jazz Cats), keyboards, strings, pan, computer literacy and
proficiency with technology through music, voice and choral; and participate in
weekly Topics in Music seminars in listening, performance anxiety, applying to
college, the art of auditioning, and chamber music. Core courses such as
musicianship and composition offer students the opportunity to broaden their
musical perspective.

There is no cost for this program for those who register before June 12,
afterward, it’s $25. Free transportation will be provided from designated Miami
Dade Public Schools.

Advanced students will receive "hands on" training at Gloria and Emilio
Estefan’s Crescent Moon’s state of the art recording studios. Under the tutelage
of staff producers, Fred “BamBam” Scott and Liza, they will receive technical
training, produce a demo and learn about the complexities of the music business
as they prepare for an exciting career in the entertainment industry.

"The Summer Music Institute (SMI) offers an ideal summer music experience in a
safe, drug free environment which will support and encourage students efforts to
improve their academic achievement and enhance their physical, mental, and
social well being,” said Josef Spencer, Jubilate’s CEO.

There will also be three special workshops as part of this summer’s program;
Effective Communication Skills with Dr. Tina Dupree of the Motivational Training
Center, F.C.A.T. preparation and The Florida Martin Luther King, Jr.’s Institute
for Non-Violence’s Kingian Nonviolence and Conflict Resolution Program.

Their training culminates with the SMI GRAND CONCERT, “Makin’ Somethin’ Happen,”
Sunday, June 29, at 2:00 p.m. on the campus of FMC. The performance will feature
all the students and faculty in a variety of ensembles.

The outstanding SMI instructors include the legendary Melton Mustafa, famed
trumpeter and arranger from the legendary Count Basie and Duke Ellington bands;
Joe Williams’s protégé and an extraordinary violinist and vocalist, Nicole
Yarling; Dr. Dawn Batson, FMC Assistant Professor of Music; Greg Rhamming,
currently appearing on Broadway in the Phantom of the Opera; vocalist Ruby Baker
and many special guests.

Students will have the opportunity to learn from the real-world experience of
these and other faculty members throughout the week, as they study a variety of
styles, including gospel, jazz, classical, pop, R&B, rock, blues, funk, fusion,
and straight ahead jazz.

"Working with Jubilate, we've helped so many teenagers these past few years, but
the need to help these gifted, motivated students continues to grow as they
prepare for college in the face of significant education budget cuts across the
state," said Dr. Alfred Pinkston, Director of Music for Florida Memorial
College.

Three years ago, Jubilate created the Jubilate Arts Preparatory Academy (JAPA)
because, as community educators, they had too often seen low-income, promising
students with enormous talent slowed because of a lack of financial support,
encouragement, consistent top-quality training, or awareness of the many options
available to them in the performing arts and to redirect the lives of youth who
may be a step away from violent life on the streets.

Dr. Nelson Hall, Jubilate’s founder stated, “Of the first group of graduating
High School seniors, an incredible 100% of them received music scholarships, and
this is in area where over 40% of the high school students never finish school.”

"Yaya Diallo, an elder from Mali, West Africa shares his music,
experience and insights"

YAYA DIALLO

Musician – Composer – Dancer – Healer

Teacher – Lecturer – Storyteller

Guide to Mali: "Healing Drum Tours"

Native of Mali, West Africa

Author: The Healing Drum: African Wisdom Teachings

At the Threshold of the African Soul

Yaya Diallo, a native of Mali West Africa, is the embodiment of a
country renowned for its rich musical culture. Inspired by his
intimate experience in traditional village life Yaya expresses his
profound knowledge of West African healing arts in his instrumental
album Nangapè of West African drumming, balafon and flute music.
Yaya Diallo's albums The Healing Drum, Dounoukan and Dombáa
Folee offer ceremonial, ritual and Minianka medicine music of Mali.

Live at Club Soda, Yaya Diallo's forthcoming album, recorded in
performance with his band Kanza takes a dramatic shift as Yaya
bridges traditional music with occidental sounds including saxophone,
electric violin, bass and lead guitars and drum set as well as voice,
traditional African drums and balafon. Yaya Diallo's innovative
music gives solo voice to all the instruments within an African
rhythmic structure and swings with a sound reminiscent of 1950's
rock-n-roll and blues to a beat driven and spoken to by the Dounouba
and Djembe drums.

Yaya Diallo says music is as important as the blood in his veins--the
essence of the African soul. He writes, "Playing music to benefit
people was the fundamental value of our musical culture…. At
present we are witnessing the massacre of the African culture….
The old initiators no longer have young people to educate….
adoptive religion had as its objective the killing of the last savage
and they have shouted `mission accomplished!' I doubt that it
is."

Following graduation from the University of Montreal and a brief
career as a chemist, Yaya Diallo was co-founder of the music and
dance groups Djembe-Kan and Cléba and a member of the African
Troubadours with the World Music Institute as well as a faculty
member of the Creative Music Studio and the Omega Institute for
Holistic Studies of New York. Yaya Diallo is active with his band
Kanza and continues to teach and perform internationally. Goals
include the creation of traditional African healing centers. Listen

" ... the album is a delightful exploration of the traditional music
of Mali in general, and of the use of the balafon in particular."

Jazz & Blues. May 1982, p. 35.

" ... Nangape, a timeless classic in its own right, holds the
primitive sounds of drums intermingling with the progressive and
soothing sounds of flutes that encapsulate you in a world of inner
peace.... tranquil, peaceful and utterly awing ... this album
completely blew me away and that's coming from a person that listens
to industrial/electronic based metal and glitch-prone digital
hardcore!"

People always ask me the following question: how do you define your
music?
Well after about 20 years as a professional west african producer and
musician my music has grown beyond simplistic labelings. Nowadays it
is a lot easier to introduce Afrobeat music to the rest of the world.
African music has become a daily reality in many parts of the world.
The big record companies have ceased the opportunity to capitalize on
African music at the right time. In so doing they have triggered a
phenomenon beyond their grasp. Early on African music was portrayed
as high energy music with a lot of percussions. The message of the
songs were not given enough emphasis. African music was then an
exotic sound to be played at some event to create some ambiance...
Thank God now it is a very different ball game.
I am very proud to say that I am an african independent musician who
lives to reach other souls through my tunes. The western world has
learned to appreciate African music with respect. They have gotten
the message. There is a variety of themes in african music today;from
African philosophies to plain dance afro chants...
Where do I fit in the picture? I don't know exactly... All I know is
that my passion for African music is what drives me. About a year ago
I produce my first album titled Gaynde meaning lions in wolof-west
african language. It was a tribute to the senegalese national team
that played for the first time in history the world cup, soccer that
is. I hear express my gratitude to all of you that have supported me.
Be it by buying my music or by expressing some interest in what I do.
Anyway check out my wesbsite www.kingibu.com and plese don't be shy
send me a line to tell me about you at ibu@...
Peace and Love, King Ibu

Hey people.

It's Devin here from South Africa.

Great forum... glad I cam accross it!

OK - I'm a budding bassist who's looking to get into afro jazz!

Now I don't know if anyone here is into Maskanda music (South African
trad. township tunes).... I love the maskanda bass tone and rythm....
does ANYONE have ANY insight into how you could go about getting the
sound down? Tried by ear and aint getting very far.... lots of slides
I know, but that's about it...

It's just such a jumpy, vibrant sorta sound that I absolutely have to
add it to my musical vocab....

Anyhelp would be most appreciated otherwise I'm gonna have to assault
the next SA jazz bassist I see....

Thanks,
Devin.

In a very short time King Ibu has developed a presence on the world
stage. Beginning with his successful debut "Gaynde," King Ibu
launched his music video to Senegalese embrace. Although many well-
known artists wrote songs to pay tribute to the Senegalese National
Soccer team, it was the "Gaynde" video they played five times a day
and the "Gaynde" video that accompanied footage of the heralded
team's return home. Recently King Ibu has recorded Internet CD sales
second only to Youssou NDour. King plays almost every instrument on
his CD and somehow maintains a diversity of sound that includes
mbalakh, blues, and rock & roll.

also lent her voice to the "Message In a Bottle" soundtrack. Tyia
has just completed her debut CD with her producer-of-choice: King Ibu.

While discovering individual success, these two solo artists
uncovered a meaningful partnership. At one particular festival King
Ibu and Tyia began to sing songs they had written together. The
style combined Tyia's love for Jazz with King Ibu's undeniably
rhythmic grooves. Over the recent months King Ibu and Tyia have
shared the stage with Poncho Sanchez, Vance Gilbert and Tim
Weisburg.
