Subject: Lumpa Church, Zambia

Extract from a blog post, a book review:

A Time To Mourn (A personal account of the the 1964 Lumpa Church revolt by
John Hudson). My copy is from Bookworld Publishers, Lusaka, 1999.

The episode in Northern Rhodesian history is well known and there are several
accounts in print.

In 1953 the Lumpa Church was founded as an offshoot sect of the local
Catholic church in Chinsali district. Its founder, Alice "Lenshina" (Regina)
Lubusha , was "a failed catechumen" according to this account.

Something happened to Alice: an illness, a vision, a hallucination perhaps,
in which she believed she had died and risen from the dead four times, and
had seen God. After a period in which she remained in her original church,
during which perhaps all the trouble might have been avoided, she established
a breakaway church with a focus on confession of witchcraft. (Of course,
failure to confess might mean guilt. This may have contributed to the quick
rise in her church membership.) Crucially, also, the church was against
participation in politics or membership of political parties, and this would
ultimately lead to conflict and bloodshed. The time, of course, was leading
up to the independence of Zambia, and UNIP members were militant. In the
final stages, roughly two months before independence in October 1964, the
army moved in on Lumpa Church settlements.

The Lumpa church members were not only suspicious of outsiders and political
party members, but openly hostile. There had been skirmishes and a few deaths
and reprisals before the real massacres began. Lumpa church members stopped
sending their children to school. In addition, the church had defied local law
and set up villages without permission of local chiefs. This disregard and i
solation led to suspicion and aggression. Animosity had grown between church
members and UNIP supporters.

Kenneth Kaunda certainly tried to avert the crisis, but perhaps at that point
things had gone too far. An agreement brokered by KK was drawn up for church
settlements to disperse, but this was not honoured or enforced. The church began
to develop end-time tendencies, believing that their time on earth was short.
They stopped cultivating food and had to resort to raids on neighbouring
  villages instead.

The Lumpa church members were mostly armed with sharp sticks, spears and pangas,
whilst the Northern Rhodesia Regiment (NRR) were armed with automatic rifles. In
spite of there having been a couple of causalities on the army side (mainly
during their attempts to negotiate) there was no contest in the end. As many as
a thousand Lumpas were killed. With independence approaching, the ki
llings did not perhaps receive the kind of attention that they might have done
in less tense circumstances. The government was more concerned with preparation
for independence. However, the authorities concerned are left looking pretty
bad, in my opinion.

Surprisingly, after such a disastrous event and although Alice was sent to
prison and died a mysterious death in 1978 under house arrest, the Lumpa
(excelling/exceeding) church still survives today.

I came across some quite horrific footage on-line, of an attack on a Lumpa
Church, I believe the main church building, judging by its size. Why this
footage was shot and how it has survived to see the light of day are a
mystery to me. One would imagine it would have been destroyed.... These
pictures can't bring home the full horror of it. I have avoided the worst
images. The violence perpetrated against people who clearly are not
attempting to fight is completely unjustifiable.

Read the whole thing here, with pictures

Dear Jenn et al

Here is the tutorial on searching for the Rhodesian Death Register
references and then finding the actual document(s). Please note that what the
website refers to as Death Registers are actually Death Notices, in most
cases
nearly identical to our South African DN's. To illustrate we'll search for
LLOYD references.

Step 1: Open the FamilySearch website https://www.familysearch.org/

Step 2: Ignore the Search function (these records are not indexed yet).
Select "Africa"

Step 3: On this page select "Zimbabwe, Death Registers, 1890-1977; Index to
Death Register, 1892-1977"

Step 4: On this page select "Browse through 74,045 images"

Step 5: This next page contains all the Index books. Ignore "Death indexes
Open Files" and "Death Indexes Surnames A-Z" for now. All the
remaining indexes are logically set out in alphabetic order. In your case you
want to search LLOYD, so select "Death indexes Surnames
KE-L"

Step 6: Click on "1892-1976"

Step 7: You'll now see the cover of the index book. You can adjust the size
and position of the image by using the controls in the
bottom left corner. Either in the top left or right corner you will see a
line
saying "Image 1 of 48", with the 1 being inside a small box. By
changing this number you can select which page of the 48 to go to. You

do not know which page LLOYD is on, so you have to estimate. You can go
back and forth one page at a time by using the arrow controls in
the top right-hand corner.

Step 8: By trial and error you have found that the LLOYD references are on
pages 39 and 40. With pleasure you spot an entry for Clarence
Arthur LLOYD. You know that he has a wife named Laura about whom you have
scant details, so you are pleased to find an entry for Laura
LLOYD, who may be his wife. You write down the references, which are 55/139
and 69/131. You also jot down a reference to John Edward LLOYD, as he is a

also likely in your family tree (795/62).

Step 9: When you have all the references, click on "Zimbabwe, Death
Registers, 1890-1977; Index to Death Register, 1892-1977" at the
top of the page. This will take you back to to the webpage containg all the
Index books.

Step 10: The last entry of the second column is "Death registers"; click on
this.

Step 11: The index entry for Clarence Arthur LLOYD 55/139 will take you to
Vol. 55. Click on Vol. 55.

Step 12: This webpage shows Image 1 of 283. Again, by trial and error you get
to the correct DN No. 139. They are all labelled in the top
right corner. In this case it is image 169. You can save this image to your
hard drive.

Step 13: Similarly, you find the DN for Laura (69/131) by clicking on
"Death registers" at the top of the page and
browsing through Vol 69. You are thrilled to find a previously unknown
child.

Step 14: To find the entry for John Edward LLOYD 795/62, you again click on
"Death registers" at the top of the page. From
1953
on, the registers are arranged by individual year.

Step 15: Click on " 1962, #551-1145".

Step 16: You find the DN as image 258 which unfortunately is not the correct
John Edward LLOYD.

Step 17: Click on "Zimbabwe, Death Registers, 1890-1977; Index to Death
Register, 1892-1977". This takes you back to all the
indexes.

Step 18: Click on "Death Indexes Surnames A-Z" This folder contains a
separate index of DN's all labelled with the prefix B. Any
index reference number found here has to be browsed for in the releavant
year's "B" section. These are to be found from 1959
onwards.

This website is a treasure trove to anyone doing South African research.

Regards

Russell

I found this web site

http://www.angelfire.com/folk/pipfamilytree/pafg08.htm#277

Which had this information:

David Gordon MACLEOD died in 1947. He married Agnes Maude ISTED.

Agnes Maude ISTED [Parents] died in 1968. She married David Gordon MACLEOD.
Macleod, husband of Agnes was a Transkei magistrate - they had 6 children
- 5 girls and 1 boy

The name of the husband is wrong -- it was actually Robert MacLeod.

But I'd still like to get in touch with the compiler of the web site.
Unfortunately e-mail sent to the address of the compiler given there bounced.

It's called "Pip's family tree" and the address given is:
venus@...

Does anyone know who the owner might be?

One of the interesting characters who lived in Natal in the 1850s was an
Alfred Francis Dawson, who quickly insinuated himself into the upper social
circles of Durban in those days (such as they were), and apparently, into the
hearts of some of the wives of the worthy gentlemen of the city: wine dealer,
racing man, newpaper proprietor (well, sort of), churchwarden and adulterer.

Turns out that that wasn't his real name either, and we seem to have reached
the point in our family history research where we have discovered who he
really was. A rather sad story, but interesting if you like the by-ways of
history.

I won't bore everyone here with the whole thing, but if you'd like to know

This is just a reminder about the African genealogy and family history
discussion forum.

If you haven't yet done so, visit the forum web page at:

and if you know anyone else who may be interested, please invite them to do so
as well.

Another thing you can do on the web page is edit your membership.

One of the things you can do there is choose between the "New and improved" and
"Traditional" message formats.

I STRONGLY RECOMMEND THAT YOU OPT FOR THE "TRADITIONAL" FORMAT.

The "new and improved" format inserts extraneous HTML codes into messages, which
sometimes makes it difficult to read them. Some of us turn HTML off in our mail
readers, because that is a protection against spam, phishing and virus messages.

Hi list

Is there anyone on this list that has an ancestor/descendant with one of the
above surnames in their trees, that is willing to share this info.

I have a number of unlinked individuals I'm trying to link on my tree.

Any little bit will help.

Thanks in advance
Carol

About 25 years ago I wrote an article for "Family Tree" magazine about using
South African deceased estate records to find information about people who
died outside South Africa, with particular reference to Re Beaglehole, the
case that established the South African law of missing persons (which differs
from English law in that in South Africa a person cannot be automatically
presumed dead if they have been missing for 7 years or more).

I doubt that anyone under 40 would have read the original artcle, so I've
posted an updated version on my blog at:

http://t.co/xierAw9h

it also has some references to Namivia and Zimbabwe.

If anyone spots anything that needs further updating (possibly some of the
estate records have been moved to other archives since we now have nine
provinces) please let me know.
