Description

For discussion of genealogy and family history of people in Africa.

Discussion may include sources, resources, and the relationship between family history and general history, economic history, social history, church history etc. It may also include emigration and imigration to, from or within Africa.

To be relevant, discussion of people and families should have families who lived in Africa, or whose parents or children lived in Africa. The focus of the group is not ethnic, but geographical. It may deal with people of Asian or European or other ethnic origin, provided they (or their parents or chidlren) lived in Africa.

It is not for discussion of African-American genealogy -- there are other Yahoo Groups for that -- except insofar as it concerns original migrants.

This list/group was started because the newsgroup soc.genealogy.african, and its associated Rootsweb newsgroup, has not functioned for several years, and there seems no likelihood of it ever re-starting.

The Closing of Geocities and computer genealogy in South Africa
In a couple of day Yahoo!'s Geocities will close down. There's a lot of genealogical info there, so you might like to have a look while it's still available.
