The Marine and Coastal Access Bill received Royal Assent
The Act will create a new marine planning system designed to bring together
the conservation, social and economic needs of our seas. A network of Marine
Conservation Zones will be created that will protect rare and threatened
species and habitats. Four regional projects have started working with
local groups and businesses to identify which areas will be designated as
Marine Conservation Zones.

Adur's Civic Centre lives on

Adur Civic Centre
The leadership of Adur and Worthing Councils, at their joint management
committee, did not accept the officers' recommendation to dispose of the
Adur Civic Centre.
Instead, they decided to commission a more detailed technical evaluation of
the work that would be required to deal with the necessary repairs and
adaptations to the Civic Centre to bring it up to a standard suitable to
serve the needs of the Councils' partnership.

Pond Road proposals slammed
http://www.raychandler.net/shorehamsociety.org.uk/news.html
Proposals for redeveloping the Pond Road area in Shoreham are being heavily
criticised, and the Shoreham Society is putting forward detailed alternative
ideas.
Adur Council has been conducting a series of consultation events about a
scheme to redevelop this key central area, including the community centre
and its surrounds, the library, health centre and Burrscroft.
Experts at the Shoreham Society have said the council proposals would
produce a future 'urban slum' area. They are challenging the proposals on
several grounds, including:
* Dubious financial viability and economic justification
* Seriously downgraded community buildings
* Wasted space and limited functionality
* Compromised privacy for proposed housing
* Inappropriate suburban character of the overall concept.
An even more fundamental concern by the society is that the increase in
population density that the proposals would bring will pose major problems
for the local infrastructure and severely damage quality of life throughout
the area.
But in case this warning is not heeded and it is decided that a development
of the proposed extent must take place, the society is offering an
alternative design approach to overcome the major problems of the scheme put
forward by the council.
While allowing for the same intensity of housing, the society's suggestions
offer major advantages including:
* Flexible and highly functional urban space including a main pedestrian
square
* A surrounding arcade for access from the square to community
buildings, shops, cafes, etc
* Greatly improved privacy for the residential units
* A cohesive urban design to encourage maximum community use of the
public areas.
The society is seeking a meeting with council officers to present its
objections to the official proposals and offer its alternative suggestions.
Residents are urged to add their voices, either through the council
consultation at www.adur.gov.uk/pond-road, or directly to the society by
email here.
College Park Airport - The World's Oldest
http://www.collegeparkairport.org/normalindex.html
College Park Airport was established in 1909 after Wilbur Wright came to the
field to train two military officers to fly in the government's first
aeroplane. The facility is now the world's oldest continually operated
airport, and is the site of many significant aviation firsts. College Park
Airport, known as the "Cradle of Aviation," remains an active airport
serving the needs of aircraft pilots, and is also a site for history buffs
and aviation enthusiasts.

The first flight was flown by Harold Plume Piffard on 18 September 1910,
involving a mid-air turn.

Hello,
Land Restoration and Reclamation
James A Harris, Paul Birch, John Palmer
Longman
ISBN 0-582-243130
Reclamation of Calcareous Grassland, page 194
Extract:
Legumes will thrice on calcareous grassland and should be encouraged by the
addition of phosphate
Counter claim;
Research into the history of farming in the Adur area especially Applesham
Farm on the Lancing side indicated that the phosphate was introduced on to
the land for the specific purpose of increasing the density of sheep to one
per acre. The idea was to increase fertility to benefit grass useful for
sheep at the expense of herbs and legumes like Horseshoe Vetch (which are
not eaten by sheep and toxic to almost every animal except the caterpillars
of the Chalkhill Blue, Adonis Blue (butterflies) and the Dingy Skipper.
Conclusion: Phosphate is contra-indicated. Grazing confers no advantages in
chalkhill down original unimproved herbland for biodiversity advantage. The
addition of phosphate is improving the land.
Grazing may confer advantages on "improved" grassland designated as
pastures.

Marlipins Museum Public Meeting
Date: Tuesday February 16, 2010, at 7.00 pm.
Sussex Archaeological Society is reviewing the way in which it runs the
Marlipins Museum at Shoreham. This is a local
Museum, containing a lot of material on the history, and especially the
maritime and cinematic history, of Shoreham and is
housed in possibly the oldest secular building in Sussex, in Shoreham High
Street. In the past it has been supported by local
volunteers and by the Shoreham Society. However, the Sussex Archaeological
Society is convinced that the people of
Shoreham could make much better use of the Museum, its displays, and its
gallery.
To that end, they are organising a public meeting to be held in the Museum
gallery on Tuesday February 16, 2010, at 7pm,
with the intention of setting up a new Friends of the Marlipins Museum.
Anyone interested is cordially invited.
For more information contact the Trustee of the Sussex Archaeological
Society who is taking responsibility for this
development, Professor G. J. Leigh, OBE, by e-mail (jeffery.leigh@...)
or telephone (01273 596292).

Jobs are being axed and opening hours could be slashed at Shoreham Airport.
The plans announced by airport owner Albemarle Shoreham Airport Limited have
sent shockwaves of dismay through staff and many of the businesses based
there.
Bosses are conducting what they have described as a "review of airport
activities" and said there needs to be a number of redundancies to stem
losses at the historic Art Deco airfield.

Hello All,
Unfortunately I can't make this, as I'm giving a talk elsewhere that night.
I'd obviously be very interested in any archaeological aspects of the proposed
project, so could anyone kindly post anything mentioned at the meeting here on
the Group please? I've recently completed some work at New Tavern Fort in
Gravesend and wonder if there will be similar issues involved more locally. Many
thanks in advance.

Simon.
