Hello,
I'm wondering if anyone else out there has kept an accounting of the
number of letters to birthmothers IAC was supposed to have sent on
your behalf and the number of those letters they actually sent.
After a year of not a single contact from a birthmother, we went to
the IAC office and physically counted the letters that remained in
our file. It turned out that they sent less than half the number
that they were supposed to send. We were able to figure this out by
going back over all the birthmother stats they had furnished us for
the previous year and counting the number that would have
corresponded to our criteria. We knew the number of letters we
initially furnished IAC, and the numbers didn't add up.
Devasted, we met with our "counselor" to seek some of that wonderful
support that IAC touts as one of their greatest strengths. Instead
of acknowledging a wrong and offering compassion, we were told that
we "weren't ready to adopt," and that by not having ourselves posted
on the website, we "were in breach of contract."
We've since learned that the "you're not ready to adopt" statement is
a common refrain employed by IAC whenever their practices are brought
into question.
Furthermore, we were told that should we decide to continue on the
path to adoption, the only way we could be successful would be
through international adoption.
I applaud Mark for making this forum available. We hope to learn
about other people's experiences and formulate a plan to move forward.
