Good morning

As you are aware, ESG is looking to target Indigenous Australians for Help Desk and Production Support Trainee roles.

My Director, Robert Wright, attended a meeting with Auriel Bloomfield on 17 November, where it was agreed that approaching Indigenous networks (such as schools, universities etc) would be appropriate.

I have developed an information pack to assist in promoting the roles (see attached).

Your assistance in distributing the information to your appropriate networks would be appreciated.

Please note the application deadline of 23 December 2009.

Thank you

Regards

Residents decide against appeal on Alice Springs town camps
Statement on behalf of the Applicants

3 Dec 09: "Alice Springs town camp residents have this
morning decided not to proceed with an appeal against the
Federal Court’s decision last week to uphold the validity
of the Federal Government’s 40-year leases over the town
camps. The Court’s ruling will take effect at 10.30am EST
this morning. The leases enable the Federal Government to
take control of Aboriginal land for 40 years, during which
time residents will be substantially alienated from
participating in decision making about what happens in the
town camps. The residents have been extremely concerned
that the terms of the 40-year leases impact on their
fundamental rights of self-determination and control over
communal lands."

Importance: High

Hello

We have been trying to fill some positions for young Indigenous people but have been unable to do so.

There are two positions with QANTAS (Darwin and Alice Springs ). Despite sending through our networks we have not had one person apply for the positions.

An expression of interest would be suitable (covering letter, CV and referees, school reports will help/prev employ history) as there is no selection criteria for this position .

The positions will be in Customer Service. They will be fulltime Customer Service Officers training to complete a CERT III in Business. Training will be provided with a reputable training organisations (e.g.: CDU/Batchelor).

The AES will be the Employer and the Host will be QANTAS, which means the AES will be responsible for the wages/mentoring and support, appraisals etc.

QANTAS/RTO will work together to assist the candidate to complete the on and off the job training.

All expressions of interest should be forwarded to myself or Candice Hayes at the AES office here in Alice Springs .

QANTAS is committed to Indigenous employment, so naturally if the candidate performed very well there would be opportunities to further their career with QANTAS.

Obviously good customer service skills/experience would be an advantage

Ability to apply themselves throughout the training

Good Literacy/Numeracy skills is a must

  Excellent presentation

Ability to work in a team and display respectful behaviours

Commonwealth Bank have two positions; one in Alice Springs and one in Katherine. They are school based positions.

We would love to hear from students in Alice Springs or Katherine who would like a career in the Banking/Finance Sector.

These positions will be withdrawn if we cannot place Indigenous people and we would appreciate you sending this to your networks.

I or Candice Hayes can be contacted on 89 50 2300 to answer any questions.

Warm Regards

Morning all.

I’ve received this email from a reliable source re; Telstra.

 Regards,

Leo Martin

OK … if you’re anything like me and have the highly unfortunate circumstance of having some form of telecommunication service with Telstra, here’s a tiny bit of info to make you feel better about your situation especially when you need to muster the energy to contact them. I loathe paying them 30 cents each time I have to contact them (it does add up when it NEVER takes just one call – it’s gotta be deliberate that they make it so hard).

I found this 1800 phone number on a forum web site (for all things technical, particularly telecommunications) and tried it. Telstra were not in the slightest bit impressed that I’d gotten hold of the number and wanted to know where it was found – I just smirked and told them what a joy it was to use it and to not have to pay for the call J … anything, anything at all to get back at them.

Use this number for ALL bill enquiries, complaints etc etc – it is a free-call number and works exactly as the 13 22 00 number provided on your phone bill, so just use it. It has the same annoying voice prompts to get you to the right operator – and if not, I’m sure someone will transfer you to the right number – all for free. You get ripped off by them enough already!

Once again, The Washington Post has published the winning submissions
to its yearly neologism contest, in which readers are asked to supply
alternative meanings for common words.
The winners are:

1. Coffee (n.), the person upon whom one coughs.

2. Flabbergasted (adj.), appalled over how much weight you have gained.

3. Abdicate (v.), to give up all hope of ever having a flat stomach.

4. Esplanade (v.), to attempt an explanation while drunk.

5. Willy-nilly (adj.), impotent.

6. Negligent (adj.), a condition in which you absentmindedly answer
the door in your nightgown.

7. Lymph (v.), to walk with a lisp.

8. Gargoyle (n), olive-flavoured mouthwash.

9. Flatulence (n.) emergency vehicle that picks you up after you are
run over by a steamroller.

10. Balderdash (n.), a rapidly receding hairline.

11. Testicle (n.), a humorous question on an exam.

12. Rectitude (n.), the formal, dignified bearing adopted by proctologists.

13. Pokemon (n), Rastafarian proctologist.

14. Oyster (n.), person who sprinkles his conversation with Yiddishisms.

15. Frisbeetarianism (n.), (back by popular demand): The belief that,
when you die, your soul flies up onto the roof and gets stuck there.

16. Circumvent (n.), opening in the front of boxer shorts worn by Jewish men.

The Washington Post's Style Invitational also asked readers to take
any word from the dictionary, alter it by adding, subtracting, or
changing one letter, and supply a new definition.
Here are this year's winners:

1. Bozone (n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops
bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows
little sign
of breaking down in the near future.

2. Foreploy (v): Any misrepresentation about yourself for the purpose
of getting laid.

3. Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the
subject financially impotent for an indefinite period.

4. Giraffiti (n): Vandalism spray-painted very, very high.

5. Sarchasm (n): The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the
person who doesn't get it.

6. Inoculatte (v): To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.

7. Hipatitis (n): Terminal coolness.

8. Osteopornosis (n): A degenerate disease. ( that one got extra credit)

9. Karmageddon (n): Its like, when everybody is sending off all these
really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's
like, a serious bummer.

10. Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day
consuming only things that are good for you.

11. Glibido (v): All talk and no action.

12. Dopeler effect (n): The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter
when they come at you rapidly.

13. Arachnoleptic fit (n.): The frantic dance performed just after
you've accidentally walked through a spider web.

14. Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito that gets into
your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.

15. Caterpallor (n.): The colour you turn after finding half a grub in
the fruit you're eating.

And the pick of the literature:

16. Ignoranus (n): A person who's both stupid and an asshole.

How do people come up with these ideas?

ZIPLOC OMELET

(This works great !!! Good for when all your family is together. The best part is that no one has to wait for their special omelet !!!)

Have guests write their name on a quart-size Ziploc freezer bag with permanent marker.

Crack 2 eggs (large or extra-large) into the bag (not more than 2) shake to combine them.

Put out a variety of ingredients such as: cheeses, ham, onion, green pepper, tomato, hash browns, salsa, etc.

Each guest adds prepared ingredients of choice to their bag and shake. Make sure to get the air out of the bag and zip it up.

Place the bags into rolling, boiling water for exactly 13 minutes [we did 15 minutes]. You can usually cook 6-8 omelets in a large pot. For more, make another pot of boiling water.

Open the bags and the omelet will roll out easily. Be prepared for everyone to be amazed.

Nice to serve with fresh fruit and coffee cake; everyone gets involved in the process and a great conversation piece...

Imagine having these ready the night before, and putting the bag in boiling water while you get ready. And in 15 minutes, you've got a nice omelette for a quick breakfast!!!

I wonder how it would go in a microwave??

I hope you can send this notice out on your mailing list.

The Jimmy Little Foundation reconciliation book Portraits from a Land Without People
has to date raised $48,500 for the Foundation's work helping improve Indigenous health
and it is hoped to double that figure by the end of the year. Only 500 copies of the first
edition remain and Christmas orders are now being taken online at  www.aboriginalportraits.com  .

Portraits from a Land Without People celebrates the richness, diversity and resilience
of Indigenous culture.  The foreword for the book is by Pat Dodson and the introduction by
Larissa Behrendt. Phillip Adams described it as "a magnificent book …as important a book
as anything that’s been published in Australia for years."

Portraits from a Land Without People is the most comprehensive anthology of
photographs to document Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island culture yet produced.
It charts the photographic history of Indigenous Australia from the first photographs
by Douglas T. Kilburn in 1847 through to the Prime Minister’s ‘Apology’ in 2008.

The images compiled for ‘Portraits from a Land Without People’ are but a window
into the Indigenous society. The challenge for those who read this collection is to
look beyond the window and gaze into the heart and soul of the nation.
 Patrick Dodson

This collection of photographs is a catalogue of past wrongs, a celebration of
Aboriginal empowerment and a testament to Aboriginal survival.
Larissa Behrendt

The book has an authenticity that dwarfs most attempts in film, television and
print to tell the Aboriginal story of the last two centuries … It is a raw story.
It stands on its own and yet pays its respect to so many others who looked through
a lens along this long road.                                                             Jeff McMullen

I think this is a magnificent book …as important a book as anything that’s been
published in Australia for years.                                                            Phillip Adams

UN expert on right to health starts visit to Australia

23 November 2009

GENEVA -- Anand Grover, United Nations Special Rapporteur on the right of everyone to the enjoyment of the highest attainable standard of physical and mental health, began a mission to Australia on 23 November 2009. The Special Rapporteur is in the country at the invitation of the Government until 4 December.

The purpose of the mission is to determine, in the spirit of co-operation and dialogue, how Australia endeavours to implement the right to health, the measures taken for its successful realization and the obstacles encountered both at the national and international levels.

The key themes of the mission will be the impact of poverty and discrimination, including inequalities, on the enjoyment of the right to health. The mission will focus on issues regarding the enjoyment of the right to health in Australia, and in particular in the context of access to healthcare of asylum seekers, refugees and persons in detention, as well as those of indigenous populations.

Mr. Grover will meet with Government officials and with civil society representatives, including non-governmental organizations and academics.

He will give a press briefing at 11:30 am on Friday, 4 December at Kurrajong Hotel in Canberra.

The Special Rapporteur will present a report on his mission to the Human Rights Council in June 2010.

The Special Rapporteur is an independent expert appointed by the United Nations Commission on Human Rights to help States, and others, promote and protect the right to the highest attainable standard of health. For further information on the mandate of the Special Rapporteur and copies of available reports, please consult the website of the Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights:

[EXTRACT]

5.2 Indigenous Health

40. The state of Indigenous health in Australia results from and represents serious human rights breaches. Many Indigenous Australians do not have the benefit of equal access to primary health care and many Indigenous communities lack basic needs, such as adequate housing, safe drinking water, electricity and effective sewerage systems.

41. The crisis in Indigenous health in Australia is reflected in the following statistics:

(a) Life expectancy for Indigenous Australian males is 59 years, almost 18 years less than the 77.0 years expected for all Australian males, while life expectancy for Indigenous Australian females is 65 years, around 18 years less than the expectation of 82 years for all Australian females.[38]

(b) Life expectancy for Indigenous Australians is between 8 and 15 years less than that of Indigenous populations in Canada, the United States and New Zealand.[39]

(c) In 2001–2005, the infant mortality rate for Indigenous infants was three times that of non-Indigenous infants.[40]

(d) Indigenous Australians are eight times more likely to die from diabetes, three times more likely to die from circulatory disease, four times more likely to die from chronic kidney disease and have one of the highest rates of rheumatic heart disease in the world.[41]

(e) Indigenous people have a higher rate of ear and hearing problems, across all age groups, than do non-indigenous people.[42]

(f) In 2001–2005, the leading causes of death for Indigenous peoples in Queensland, South Australia, Western Australia and the Northern Territory included chronic diseases of the circulatory system and cancer.[43]

(g) The number of Indigenous Australians diagnosed with AIDS more than doubled in the four years to 2005.[44]

(h) Intentional self-harm was the leading cause of death from external causes for Indigenous males for the 2001–2005 year period. The suicide rate was almost three times that for non-Indigenous males, with the major differences occurring in younger age groups.[45]

42. The Committee on the Elimination of Racial Discrimination has previously recommended that Australia intensify its efforts to eradicate the disparities faced by Indigenous peoples in relation to, among other areas, health.[46] The Committee also recommended that decisive steps be taken to ensure that a sufficient number of health professionals provide services to Indigenous people.

43. The Government has announced its program entitled ‘Closing the Gap’ as its major response to Indigenous disadvantage in Australia across a range of portfolio areas, including health. In February 2009, a Government Report entitled Closing the Gap on Indigenous Disadvantage: The Challenge for Australia stated that National Partnerships on Indigenous Health Outcomes (partnerships between state and federal governments) would commit $1.57 billion over four years ‘to reduce the biggest health risk factors such as smoking, to improve chronic disease management and follow up and to expand the capacity of the health workforce to tackle chronic disease in the Indigenous population.’[47] This constitutes the biggest single injection of new funding by an Australian government to improve Indigenous health outcomes.[48]

Indigenous Children

44. However, whilst the significant commitment of funding is to be welcomed, reports from bodies such as the Australian Medical Association (AMA) suggest these funds are inadequate. In November 2008, the AMA released its annual report card presenting a snapshot of the health of Indigenous children.[49] Dr Capolingua, President of the AMA, said the AMA report ‘presents a disturbing picture of health conditions and outcomes more commonly associated with the Third World than with a wealthy nation such as ours’.[50] Indigenous children are:

(a) more likely to be stillborn, to be born pre-term, to have low birth weight, or die in the first month of life;

(b) two to three times more likely to die in the first year of life;

(c) eleven times more likely to die from respiratory causes;

(d) at a much higher risk of suffering from infectious and parasitic diseases, respiratory and circulatory problems, hearing loss, rheumatic fever, dental cavities, injuries and clinically-significant emotional and behavioural difficulties;

(e) nearly 30 times more likely to suffer from nutritional anaemia and malnutrition up to four years of age; and

(f) cared for by substantially fewer adults, who had serious health risks themselves.[51]

45. The report emphasised that rectifying the health gap in children can only be done by comprehensively addressing the broader contextual factors and intergenerational health influences that affect Indigenous children.

Indigenous Women

46. Indigenous women continue to experience much higher levels of ill-health, disease and death than non-Indigenous women.52 Communicable and chronic diseases are diagnosed at much higher rates than for non-Indigenous women, and health risk factors53 and mental health problems are also apparent on a much greater scale among Indigenous women than in the broader community.[54]

47. Indigenous women are more likely to have an unhealthy standard of living, and to suffer from intersecting social issues, including larger families and overcrowded housing, less access to water and utilities, less access to medical and other services, and to experience more stressors such as eviction, job loss, violence and death of family members.[55]

Possible Reform to Indigenous Health Services

48. The National Health and Hospitals Reform Commission has recommended the establishment of a National Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Authority (NATSIHA). The NATSIHA would be responsible for administering the expenditure of aggregated State and Commonwealth funding to improve health outcomes for Indigenous Australians. In particular, the NATSIHA would work to address poor nutrition in the Indigenous community, as this is recognised as an important determinant in Indigenous health.[56]

STICS - Stop the Intervention Collective Sydney
New Intervention laws still breach RDA
http://stoptheintervention.org/facts/press-releases/new-intervention-laws-still-breach-rda
26 Nov 09: "The Stop the Intervention Collective Sydney
will protest at FaHCSIA offices at 12:30pm today, against
plans to expand compulsory welfare quarantining across the
country and continue with discriminatory Northern Territory
Intervention laws. STICS argues that Minister Jenny
Macklin's claim that Income Management (IM) is benefitting
NT communities is deceitful and that the new laws will
continue to breach the Racial Discrimination Act (RDA).
"Income quarantining has been a disaster for 'prescribed
communities'."

Greens condemn Rudd Government move to nation-wide
welfare quarantining
http://rachel-siewert.greensmps.org.au/content/media-release/greens-condemn-rudd-government-move-nation-wide-welfare-quarantining
25 Nov 09: " "This is the biggest negative shift in social
policy from an ALP Government ever," said Greens community
services spokesperson Senator Rachel Siewert today. "I am
shocked that a Labor Government would countenance such poor
social policy without a shred of evidence of positive
outcomes from this level of social control. This is a huge
shift in values away from a culture of a 'fair go for all'
and towards a paternalistic approach that restricts the
choices of the disadvantaged 'for their own good'. It is
unbelievable that the Rudd Government thinks that simply
because some people are unemployed or single parents they
cannot look after their children or manage their money,"
said Senator Siewert."

ANTaR:
Concerns remain about the Northern Territory Emergency Response
http://www.antar.org.au/media/concerns_remain_about_the_NTER
25 Nov 09: "Extending income management to all welfare
recipients in the Northern Territory will
disproportionately and adversely affect Aboriginal people
in Northern Territory. said ANTaR National President, Dr
Janet Hunt. “It appears that the mooted idea that
compulsory income management could be made a special measure
under the Racial Discrimination Act, has been discarded by
the Government as indefensible,” says ANTaR National
President, Dr Janet Hunt. ANTaR has consistently opposed
ideas that income quarantining could be seen as a special
measure."

Hon Jenny Macklin MP:
Strengthening the Northern Territory Emergency Response
http://www.jennymacklin.fahcsia.gov.au/internet/jennymacklin.nsf/content/strengthening_nter_25nov2009.htm
25 Nov 09: "Moving the NTER to a sustainable development
phase can not be achieved while the suspension of the
Racial Discrimination Act 1975 (RDA) continues. The
Government will introduce legislation into the Parliament
to repeal all NTER laws that suspend the operation of the
RDA. ... Income management will be re-designed as a
non-discriminatory measure. The new scheme will commence
across the NT - in urban, regional and remote areas - as a
first step in a national roll out of income management in
disadvantaged regions."

Hon Jenny Macklin MP:
Major welfare reforms to protect children and strengthen families
http://www.jennymacklin.fahcsia.gov.au/internet/jennymacklin.nsf/content/welfare_reforms_protect_children_25nov2009.htm
25 Nov 09: "As part of major reforms to the welfare system,
the Australian Government will introduce a new income
management scheme to protect children and families and help
disengaged individuals. The Government is committed to
progressively reforming the welfare and family payment
system to foster responsibility and to provide a platform
for people to move up and out of welfare dependence. The
reforms will help fight passive welfare and mean that more
money goes to food, clothes, rent and less money goes to
buying alcohol and gambling."

26 Nov 09: "In order to keep the NT Intervention without
appearing racist, the Government has moved to give itself
income management powers for the whole country, writes
Greens senator Rachel Siewert. Late on Tuesday in Canberra,
while the eyes of the nation were focused on a climate
split in the Coalition party room, the Minister for
Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous
Affairs, Jenny Macklin, quietly briefed a few selected
journalists on controversial plans to roll out welfare
quarantining nationwide. ... " Rachel Siewert

families without being racist? You add in non Indigenous
families and treat them equally badly. The reported bad
experiences of income quarantined families do not suggest
that these changes will bring much, if any benefits to the
recipients. Yet Macklin is about to announce that those on
certain benefits in the NT will share the distress and

Widespread concerns over nationwide income management roll out
http://www.nit.com.au/breakingNews/story.aspx?id=19037
26 Nov 09: "The Rudd government's plan to rollout the
income management scheme, a controversial plank of the NT
intervention, into the whole of Australia has been met with
criticism, with concerns most of the people affected will
still be Aboriginal. ... But welfare groups and Aboriginal
activists have criticised the plan. Former Family Court
Chief Justice Alastair Nicholson, who just this week
launched an independent report labelling the NT
intervention consultations as "fundamentally flawed" told
the ABC that most of the people affected would still be
Aboriginal."

and church groups say. The controversial measure,
introduced in 2007 as part of the Federal Government's

across the whole of the Territory. The scheme will force
them to spend half of their payments on food and other
essentials. Federal Families Minister Jenny Macklin said it
would reduce the amount of money spent on grog and gambling.

Australians. “While the reinstatement of the Racial

FaHCSIA's Whitewash 'consultation' report
http://stoptheintervention.org/facts/press-releases/whitewash-consultation-report-can-t-hide-intervention-atrocities
25 Nov 09: "The Stop the Intervention Collective in Sydney
(STICS) has labeled a FaHCSIA report on NT Intervention
consultations a "shambolic whitewash", deliberately
designed to mask deep community opposition to Intervention
measures. STICS says that claims of community support for
the Intervention rely on secret, unaccountable meetings
with Intervention staff. The strong anti-Intervention
sentiments expressed through public consultation meetings
have been misrepresented or ignored. Contrary to Minister
Jenny Macklin's statements, the report provides evidence
that the Intervention is responsible for widespread abuses
of human rights and the intensification of many social
problems, particularly relating to alcohol."

http://www.antar.org.au/media/racial_discrimination_act_changes
25 Nov 09: " "Reports released on Monday on the Federal
Government's consultation process for 'redesigning' the
NTER indicate the urgent need for fundamental change in the
government's approach to dealing with Aboriginal
communities in the Northern Territory", ANTaR President,
Dr Janet Hunt said. ... The reports reveal a deeply
disturbing picture of widespread community frustration and
confusion regarding the measures introduced under the NTER.
Communities have been struggling to cope with chaotic,
uncoordinated and disempowering changes that have been
imposed without their input. "The government's consultation
process provides no basis for continuing aspects of the
NTER, such as compulsory quarantining of income - either as
so-called 'special measures' or if applied to all welfare
recipients across the Territory to avoid racial
discrimination", Dr Hunt said ... "

that it will reinstate the Racial Discrimination Act (RDA)
in the Northern Territory in 2010. Race Discrimination
Commissioner, Graeme Innes, said the proposal to
progressively lift the suspension of the RDA and
anti-discrimination laws in the Northern Territory and
Queensland was essential for Australia to be able to comply
with its human rights obligations and ensure that people
were protected from discrimination on the basis of their
race."

WILL THEY BE HEARD? - INDEPENDENT REPORT ON NTER "CONSULTATIONS":

- Report

Will they be heard? - a response to the NTER Consultations
- June to August 2009
Introduction by the Hon Alastair Nicholson AO RFD QC
Prepared by Alastair Nicholson, Larissa Behrendt,
Alison Vivian, Nicole Watson and Michele Harris
Research Unit, Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning
http://www.socialpolicyconnections.com.au/Portals/3/docs/wil%20they%20be%20heard%20report%20nov%2009.pdf
Nov 2009: "II. Summary Points
37. The consultation process undertaken by the Department
of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous
Affairs (‘FaHCSIA’) in relation to the Northern Territory
Emergency Response (‘NTER’) is insufficient to qualify as
indicating consent by Aboriginal people in the Northern
Territory to special measures for the purposes of the Racial
Discrimination Act 1975 (Cth).
38. The deficiencies in the process include:
a. Lack of independence from government on the part of the
 people undertaking the consultancy;
b. Lack of Aboriginal input into design and implementation;
c. Lack of notice;
d. An absence of interpreters;
e. The consultations took place on plans and decisions
 already made by the government;
f. Inadequate explanations of the NTER measures;
g. Failure to explain complex legal concepts; and
h. Concerns about the government’s motives in implementing
 consultation. ... "

The Hon. Malcolm Fraser launches “Will they be heard?” report
http://www.law.unimelb.edu.au/index.cfm?objectid=4B1D1CB1-B0D0-AB80-E28E8C05438EC230&DiaryID=4500
23 Nov 09: "Former Prime Minister, the Hon. Malcolm Fraser,
has joined legal experts and community group “concerned
Australians” in calling for the Rudd Government to
reinstate the Racial Discrimination Act, in line with human
rights principles, as he launched the “Will they be heard?”
report at Melbourne Law School, today. In launching “Will
they be heard?”, the Hon. Malcolm Fraser, said the report
provided detailed evidence that the Government’s
consultation with Aboriginal communities was significantly
flawed and had a predetermined end, that resulted in the
views of Aboriginal communities not being heard, even
though the imposition of “special measures” such as income
management, would have a profound and direct affect on
communities."

Greens: Independent report suggests Macklin's attempts to
restore the RDA will fail
http://rachel-siewert.greensmps.org.au/content/media-release/independent-report-suggests-macklins-attempts-restore-rda-will-fail-greens
23 Nov 09: "An independent report released today on recent
Northern Territory reform consultation undermines any
attempt by Minister Jenny Macklin to restore the Racial
Discrimination Act by appealing to 'special measures.' The
independent report is at odds with the FaHCSIA consultation
report and media statements today by Minister Jenny Macklin
- who claims the consultations were 'comprehensive' and
highlighted comments supporting the NTER. "The independent
report concludes that serious deficiencies in FaHCSIA's
consultation process mean that it cannot be legally
considered as indicating consent to the use of
discriminatory measures for the purposes of the Racial
Discrimination Act," said Greens Aboriginal Issues
spokesperson Senator Rachel Siewert."

STICS - Stop the Intervention Collective Sydney
RDA reinstatement masks continuation of racist laws
http://stoptheintervention.org/facts/press-releases/rda-reinstatement-masks-continuation-of-racist-laws
24 Nov 09: "The Stop the Intervention Collective Sydney
(STICS) has condemned Minister Jenny Macklin's plans to
introduce legislation this week, which characterise NT
Intervention controls as "special measures" under the
Racial Discrimination Act (1975). ... "The government
claims to have held over 500 consultations - as though
Intervention policies have the support of effected
communities. However, the results of these consultations
were exposed as a farce the same day they were released.
The consultations were subject to devastating criticisms by
scholars like Alastair Nicholson and Larissa Behrendt.
They've shown that the decision to continue the
Intervention was made before the process started, and the
government structured meetings to stifle opposition." "

Greens: NTER reform consultation meeting transcripts
denied public scrutiny
http://rachel-siewert.greensmps.org.au/content/media-release/nter-reform-consultation-meeting-transcripts-denied-public-scrutiny
26 Nov 09: "The Senate today refused an Australian Greens'
motion to make available transcripts of the Government's
Northern Territory reform consultation meetings. ... "An
independent report has shown that deep flaws exist in the
Government's consultation process. Yet the Government is
claiming there is support for continuing the use of
discriminatory measures, which is not consistent with the
findings of the Independent Review." ... "The independent
report identified significant problems in the manner in
which the consultation meetings they attended were
conducted, and released full transcripts that support
these claims," said Senator Siewert."
