Tomorrow (Thursday, November 11th) at 12:15-2:00 in Room 201, the Muslim Law
Students Association (MLSA) is sponsoring a panel discussion on religious
freedom and the First Amendment rights of Muslims. Entitled "Guilty Until
Proven Innocent: A Panel Discussion of Civil Rights Abuses Against Muslim
Americans," the discussion will be moderated by Prof. Brittian and will feature
Nadhira Al-Khalili, Esq., Legal Counsel for the American-Islamic Relation
Council; Abed Ayoub, Esq., Legal Director of the American-Arab
Anti-Discrimination Committee; and Alejandro Beutel, Government Liaison for the
Muslin Public Affairs Council.
The ACLU Club discussed sponsoring our own panel discussion about this issue at
our September meeting, but agreed that we would step aside and co-sponsor such
an event if it was proposed by the MLSA. This panel discussion is, therefore,
an ACLU Club event and I urge all ACLU Club members and anyone else interested
in the ACLU, or in protecting the civil liberties guaranteed by the Bill of
Rights to attend. Members of the Executive Board of MLSA have asked me to
submit questions prior to tomorrow's discussion. If there is a specific topic
you would like the panel members to address, please email Alia Cambel at
aliacambel@....
As usual, refreshments will be provided. See you all there.
Hey everyone,
There will be a happy hour/Taco Bar for the ACLU Club this Wednesday, November
17th from 5 to 7 PM at Epicurean & Co. Hope to see you all there!
Could you send this out to our members.
John Wimberly, President of the Board of Directors of the ACLU of the National
Capital Area, is hosting a reception at his home on Thursday, December 9th from
6:30-8:00pm. The purpose of this reception is to give ACLU members and donors
the opportunity to find out about what issues the ACLU-NCA is currently involved
with. Because this is at Mr. Wimberly's home, attendance is limited. There are
2 spaces left, and the ACLU-NCA has invited any members of our UDC ACLU
organization to attend, but this is on a first come, first served basis. If
anyone is interested, please contact me at sebardos@... as soon as
possible. I will check with the ACLU-NCA and get the address and directions for
you.
Thanks.
-Sarah Bardos

Here's an invite to the event I was talking about. Perhaps you could pass it
along to anyone you think might be interested. Since the planning meeting, a
Ugandan Gay Activist has been bludgeoned to death and his funeral disrupted by
an Anglican priest shouting anti-gay attacks, underscoring the "fierce urgency
of now." Thanks a lot. Don
Breakfast Without Bigotry:
A Response to "The Family's" National Prayer Breakfast
Thursday, February 3, 2011
6:00 AM -8:00 AM
On the Sidewalk Outside the Washington Hilton Hotel
1919 Connecticut Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20009
Q Street Exit -- Dupont Circle Metro
Join us as we protect our lives and speak up for those who can't for fear of
imprisonment and murder.
In the wake of the murder of Ugandan gay activist, David Kato, and the pending
deportation of Brenda Namigadde from the UK back to Uganda, we believe it is
imperative that "The Family" be exposed not only for their role as organizer of
the National Prayer Breakfast, but for their relationship with many of our
legislators and their influence on world affairs, including the annihilation of
LGBT people worldwide.
While its organizers would have you believe the National Prayer Breakfast is an
ecumenical gathering absent a policy agenda, it is in fact the tentpole event of
the year for the clandestine operation "The Family". This fringe group uses the
visibility and support from the National Prayer Breakfast (attended by many
politicians and business leaders) and other events to further its world-wide
campaign against gay folk. Associates of
"The Family" continue to promote a proposed law that would imprison for life
and murder
LGBT people—just for being who they are—
while also criminalizing knowing an LGBT person without reporting them.
"The Family" has invested much in mentoring current and future world leaders,
including David Bahati, a Ugandan legislator and author of the Ugandan
anti-homosexuality bill (a.k.a. the Ugandan "Kill the Gays" bill).
On the morning of February 3, we'll gather on the sidewalk outside the Prayer
Breakfast to educate the attendees on "The Family's" role in this annual event,
to stand up to their bigotry, and to stop the Family's interference in Ugandan
affairs, which itself has been called a trial run for what they want to happen
in the U.S.
