The ACE Reading Club is a community-based reading program offered in Greenbelt, Maryland, a suburban area just outside Washington, D.C. The program was created in 2000 by the Greenbelt Advisory Committee on Education through a grant offered by the Governor’s Office on Crime Control and Prevention and is now funded by the City of Greenbelt. The ACE Reading Club program serves approximately 6000 youth (comprised of students in local public schools, local parochial schools, and homeschoolers) in grades k thru 12. The purpose of the ACE Reading Club program is to encourage students to read and enjoy books, develop a life-long interest in reading, and explore a basic skill for personal and community success through innovative projects, activities, and events. The ACE Reading Club wants to build excitement for the activity of reading and to send the message that “reading is fun!” The ACE Reading Club desires to provide students with an educational opportunity (albeit disguised as fun) and reading support systems that will enable the student to expand their worldly knowledge and appreciation for reading, as well as helping them to develop a basic skill for personal and community success.
