Financial Responsibility for Kids :: Compiled Responses   Message List

Here is a compilation of AC4 responses to Kira’s question about teaching Financial Responsbility to Kids.

I am interested in creating a summer program (or at least as a segment of a larger program) that teaches children financial responsibility, preferrably one that involves computers in some way (any way is fine, even if it is just creating reports).  My main goals are teaching kids the importance of savings and working toward a financial goal, whether it is college or saving for a new PSP.  My target ages are 9-14.  Any ideas out there?  Any experience to share?

Have you asked any of the banks in your area? Quite a few of them have software programs already developed and are willing to work together with you.

The Progressive Federal Credit Union in Rochester, NY has a program.  You might contact them.  Google them - their info will come up.  Take care, Linda

Try truelifeinteractive.com.  We used them one summer with GREAT success.

Try a free online software from www.economis.net.  It is a financial literacy program developed by a Youth for Christ chapter in Ohio. We saw a demo at the Christian Community Development Association conference last fall and can't wait to implement it in our youth centers.  YFC wants you to take it to local banks and get their sponsorship so that they can continue to offer the services for free.

download the FASFA college  fund application and have the youth go through the steps to apply for the educational grant, it will give them a headstart on thinking about what it takes to go to college, it will also send a signal  to the parents who will also have to participate (although limited) in filling out the grant application. It illustrates the 2.0 GPA requirements which some students believe is to low to go to college and will help them understand that you do not have to a wiz kid to attend college to get a great career you can be a normal youth with goals...

I certainly have been interested in this subject and do training to help people understand Mortgages and how money works and the rule of 72.  It amazes me how people want to pay off there mortgage when they should be investing in there future.  Go to my web site and look at the presentation Harness the Power of your Mortgage www.bg2576.wlgweb.com .  If you are going to teach it would be important to see this presentation.  And I have other book resources if you are interested let me know.

I’m not sure if these cost anything…they look like they might be free.  But I just found them in an attempt to research the same type of program.  The first link allows you to tailor a program to specific youth age groups.
