It’s common for people to think that their horse is priceless. Horse owners often become very emotionally attached to their animals. Horses have lots of meaning and value in society. Dogs may be man’s best friend. But without horses would the world be the same? The old saying that humans rode through history on the backs of horses is true. Horses were used extensively to develop America. The cowboy riding a horse is the symbol that most people associate with America. At the turn of the 19th century the train, tractor and automobile replaced the horse.
Most people would think that horses have little use outside of recreation, Amish communities and cattle ranches. The truth is horses are probably needed more now in American than ever before. Horses have been and are being used to therapeutically. There are two type of therapy commonly used with horses. There is physical and mental. The more common therapy is physical. That is usually associated with people having physical handicaps. Horses have been very beneficial there too. Therapeutic riding programs are well established across the country. The therapeutic programs that are becoming popular are for mental and emotional well being.
A great example of Equine Therapy is at The Tulsa Boys Home. The therapy usually breaks down into several categories such as Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), Equine Assisted Learning (EAL) or Animal-assisted therapy (AAT). All of these therapies use horses as the tool for positive change in the person. The goal of this therapy is to help people emotionally grow and learn better ways to deal with problems in live.
There are other similar programs that use animals other than horses. Many programs have used dogs, cats or birds. Horses pose something to a person that no that other animal usually brings, huge size. This large size helps the person overcome fears and gain confidences. The trick is learning how to get a large animal to do a task effortlessly. The human must develop numerous skills in order to accomplish that feat. Not to mention learning the language of the horse. In learning those skills the human also learns the skills to be a better person.
Natural Horsemanship has that same facets of these therapies. Most people are probably unconscious of that, even experienced practitioners probably don‘t realize that. Horses prove once again to be valuable to people. For more information on this subject go to:
