I too would like to plead fatigue for sending a mass reply. I blame
Cincinnati, and Deor specifically for teaching a fast lindy class last
thing in the day. Had I read Sean's mail before sending my own, I might
have fared better

Date: Sun, Jun 13, 1999, 10:19 PM
Hello. This is yet another WDIV "Go 4 It" commercial update. Taylor
Holland will be unable to access his personal e-mail until Friday, so he
asked
that I send you this message and forward/respond to questions in the
meantime.
WDIV has asked that the Tuxedo Junction band appear at "J.D.'s 2001" (old
Macomb Theater) at 2:00 and that everyone else (dancers, extras, etc.) show
up by 3:30 PM.
The band spent another 6 hours in an audio recording studio this past
Saturday
and I'm happy to report that the commercial (and a few tunes to put on a
demo
CD) is nearly done. Many thanks to our recording engineer, "Lucky" Joe
Neely,
and Paul King for all their hard work to author, record and mix the com-
mercial's tune. Wait until you hear it!
Thanks again, everyone.
Gary Herzenstiel
for Taylor Holland and Tuxedo Junction.

Here's a nice email from Lavay Smith's camp. I hope everyone enjoys
reading it,
Del Villarreal
------------------------------------------------------------------------
News and Gossip for June, 1999:
Hey now everybody!
Although it's only been a month since our last News and Gossip
column, we've been really busy and have plenty to talk about. First off,
we're proud to say that Lavay Smith has been chosen of the 101 sexiest
people in L.A. by Los Angeles Magazine. Check out page 103 of the June
issue, and you'll see a very sexy full page photo of Lavay shot especially
for the magazine, and some very nice words about the band, which are worth
quoting:
"She looks like a 50's pinup, but she's more Billie Holiday than
Bettie Page. This Diva, who divides her time between San Francisco and
L.A. oozes sexiness from every curve while belting out "Blue Skies" and
"One Hour Mama" at the Derby and Club Caprice in Redondo Beach. (Her
eight-piece band's pretty hot, too.)"
Although we're based in the San Francisco Bay Area, we work in L.A.
some 6-10 weekends per year, and it's nice to know that we're known to both
fans and the press down there. Thanks to L.A. Magazine for the kind words
and the hot photo!
We had a wonderful time this past weekend, which was dubbed
"Frankie Mania" and was dedicated to celebrating the 85th birthday of one
of the most important dancers of all time in any style, the one and only
Frankie Manning. One of the true pioneers of the Lindy Hop, and a beacon
of inspiration for thousands of swing dancers all over the world, Frankie
is truly one of the most wonderful people that we have ever known.
It was an honor to perform for him on Saturday night at the Russian Center.
We are particularly honored that, when asked in a Washington Post-sponsored
online chatroom which contemporary bands capture the spirit of the original
bands at the Savoy ballroom, Frankie singled out our band as his only
choice. This affirmation means more than any positive review in a magazine
to us, and we will always try to live up to it.
Like the other two shows this weekend, we had a sold-out crowd, and
enjoyed performing as well as watching the performances. We were
particularly thrilled to meet the legendary Norma Miller for the first
time. We had heard about her for a long time, and had read her book, but
it was something else to meet her in person. Norma is every bit as
wonderful as we had heard, and has beautiful sense of humour, as well as
truly dignified persona. She gave us a particularly nice comment the next
day when she said that we played the Basie material better than the current
incarnation of the Basie band. Hard to believe, but we'll respectfully
accept the nice thought!
We played a special program that night, featuring the first ever
live appearance of our nine-piece, five horn lineup, which included Ron
Stallings on Baritone and second Tenor Sax in addition to our usual four
horns. By request, we also debuted a new arrangement of "Shiny Stockings"
for Frankie's Birthday dance. The arrangement is based on the original
1956 Frank Foster chart for Count Basie, and was written especially for
this event by the great David Berger. David has been writing some
outrageously beautiful charts for the band, many of which we have been
recording. You may have heard David's great charts before, especially if
you own any records by Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz
Orchestra. David has transcribed over 300 of Duke Ellington's works for
that band, and is one of the world's foremost authorities on swing music,
and especially Duke's music. What's more, David has recently debuted his
own big band, featuring the absolute cream of the crop of New York
musicians, at Swing 46. The band is called the Sultans of Swing, and
promises to set new standards of musical excellence and swing in the coming
months and years.
The rest of the weekend was just as fun. On Sunday, Chris took
part in a very stimulating panel discussion about gender issues in swing
dancing and the relationship between musicians and dancers. There were a
lot of great insights from Frankie, Norma, Ernie Smith, Bill Elliot, Steven
Mitchell, Paul Overton, and the rest of the panel. We spent Sunday night
dancing and listening the our dear friend Bill Elliot and his wonderful
swing orchestra, and came back for more on Monday, where we danced and
listened to George Gee, another dear friend, and his swinging band. What a
weekend-we'll never forget it!
We mentioned recording, and yes, we are indeed in the middle of
making our second album. We have recorded nine tunes in the first two
sessions, with two more sessions planned for the end of July. With some 17
tunes to choose from, we'll put together an album, and use the rest as a
start for our third album. We'd like to try to put out an album every year
or at least every 18 months from now on. With the help of great
arrangements by David Berger, this should be possible. A couple of notes
about our new album. It will feature a ten-piece band with 6 horns (two
trumpets, trombone, tenor sax, alto sax, and baritone sax). We have
recorded a mambo, which features the addition of two superb percussionists,
and have even recorded a Christmas tune. We're also including a lot of
original material. One of our original tunes is a collaboration with David
Berger, and we're writing another with swing favorite Bill Elliot. When
you need help, go get the best help you can find! Needless to say, we're
thrilled with the results so far, and can't wait to finish recording and
get the album out. We're shooting for a mid-September release.
We almost forgot to mention that we had a lot of fun in the Midwest
at the beginning of May-it already seems like a long time ago! We had some
great shows, met lots of wonderful people, and generally had a ball. We
performed at Liquid in Chicago on Wednesday, May 5th, the Casa Loma
Ballroom in Saint Louis on Thursday the 6th, The Medina Ballroom in
Minneapolis on Friday the 7th, and the Aragon Ballroom on Saturday the 8th.
All of the venues were nice, and the Aragon was truly spectacular. As
usual, we particularly enjoyed hearing and meeting other bands. We worked
with the Senders in Minneapolis, and Jump, Jive and Wail (from Cleveland)
and The Blues Swingers at the Aragon. All three bands were excellent, with
great charts and great musicians.
Although the tour was short (four shows in four days), we must
admit that it was quite strenuous, with very little time to sleep or rest
at all. We've dubbed it "The Walking Wounded Tour", since several members
of the band had a rough time. Chris came away from the trip exhausted and
contracted a pretty severe case of bronchitis, which is only just
subsiding. Jules suffered from an aggravated lower back problem. But
worst of all, Bill Ortiz had a terrible mishap-he accidentally stumbled and
fell off the stage at the Medina Entertainment Center right after our
soundcheck and broke his arm. Being a tough son of a bitch, he actually
played the first set with a broken arm, not realizing how severe his injury
was. On the break, Diana took him to the hospital, and the musicians in
the opening act helped us find a trumpet player to play the second set,
which, amazingly, we were able to do, even though it was a Friday night.
Special thanks to the Senders-they are a superb band, and wonderful
people. Yes, the road can be tough!
Nevertheless, we will indeed hit the road quite a bit this summer.
We start with a trip to Southern California this week, including our first
ever appearances in San Diego and Palm Springs. Next, we're off to
Colorado for the Aspen Jazz Festival and a date in Denver. At the end of
June and into July, we hit the East Coast for two weeks, with dates in
Manhattan, Montreal, Toronto, Boston, Vermont, and Philadelphia. We'll be
in the Pacific Northwest for the first time in the middle of July, with
shows in Seattle, Portland, and the San Juan Islands. Finally, we'll be
back in the Midwest in September, with more shows in Chicago and several
other cities.
Rather than list all of the shows here, we'd like to refer you to
the schedule posted in the "Calendar" section of this very website. It is
very thorough, and is constantly updated as soon as new information comes
in. We also just added a Links button on the site with some great info,
check it out! You can also try our hotline number (415/979-8797) or send
us an email (lavay@...), and we'll put you on our email list for
regular updates concerning our schedule and special events. Thanks again
for your support, and stay in touch!
Until next month, lots of love, and we hope to see you soon,
Lavay Smith and Chris Siebert

Hullo, again,
A couple more points which you may have already noticed:
1. Any reply to a message that went to the list automatically gets
sent
to the whole list. If you want to reply only to the sender,
you'll
have to manually enter the address, or figure out if your email
software has a feature to do that.
2. If you need to be off the list temporarily, for vacations, etc, go
to the Onelist.com member center, and you'll be able to manage
your
subscription. There's a check box for "No email" alongside a
checkbox for "Digest" when you get the screen for managing your
subscription.
3. A cute feature, as some of you have already discovered, is the
group
calendar. Log in to the member center, and click on the link to
your
AASWING subscription. You'll find a link to the group calendar,
which all list members have access to.
Right now, there are about 80 members of the list, which is over 120
less
than the 216 members we had on AASWING@.... If you have any
questions, please email me at aaswing-requests@....

Hello Everyone,
I'm organizing a swing dance demo for the American
Cancer Society's Relay for Life and thought aaswing
people might enjoy using their dance skills to help with
this worthy cause.
Their fundraiser, Relay for Life will take place the
weekend of 6/19 on the EMU campus. They'll have lots
of people there with not much to do at any given time.
I'm putting together a group of swing dancers to
entertain the crowd. Here's the specifics.
WHEN: Saturday June 19th, 7:30 to 9:00pm
(Dancing starts at 8:00pm)
WHERE: University Park, EMU Campus
Take Washtenaw east to Oakwood (just before
the water tower) Left on Oakwood and right on
Structure Drive.
University park is ahead on the left.
Campus has open parking everywhere on 6/19.
WHAT: Swing dancing to entertain the Relay for Life
participants. Mostly East Coast Swing with some
West Coast tunes. Even beginners can wow this
crowd with whatever they know.
COST: Free
I'm asking people to RSVP to me (rszumski@... or
734-677-0212) so I can try to ensure gender balance. Dress
appropriately for the weather and as a dance entertainer. I
don't know exactly what to expect and cannot answer too
many questions people may have. We're just going to show
up and try to do the best we can with what's available to
help out with their fundraiser. Thanks.

Hi everyone...
Does anyone know anything about the Toronto dancing scene (good clubs, etc.)?
I'm possibly headed out there this weekend and wanted to check out how the
Canadians do it. Any and all information would be appreciated. Thanks!

Early warning announcement!
Want to experience a bit of the Harlem Renaissance? Then keep the
following date in mind:
Sat. 22 Apr 2000, 8pm
Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra, Swing Dance Tour
Wynton Marsalis, trumpet and director
I think this will be at the Convention Center at EMU in Ypsi (where they
had the Afro-Cuban All-Stars show last season), and they will be selling
dance passes as well as regular "sit-down-and-listen" tickets. Check the
UMS web page http://www.ums.org/ for more info: I only found out about this
through the members' early mailing.

Yes, they are back in Toledo (despite Big Boy and the TPD). Come to the
CitiLounge on June 28 (yes a Monday night) and see Royal Crown Revue. Advance
tickets at Ticketmaster for $10, at the door for $12. I am pretty darn sure it
is all ages, but it is at least 18+. Email me for details.

Hello again folks.. for those of you who are not attending the Midwest
SwingFest in Cincinatti this weekend, Toledo is hosting the Penthouse
Playboys who played at the pig back in December... SOOOO if you have nothing
else to do, come down to Toledo and check them out. Most of us Toledoians
will be in Cinci, but that shouldn't stop you!!!

Hi all,
I got a flyer in the mail that I thought I'd share
with you.

same time it a great combination. I've actually been
thinking about trying to put together a trip that this
for the Detroit area. Trip applications must be in by
June 30. Emily Havlin sent me the info. You can call
her at 800-658-7128, email tours@... or
